Looks like Unger is finally taking over at center -- now we know why Mora was all over Spencer.

For whatever, I still don't think Spencer is a problem.

There seems to be a divide amongst Seahawks fans: Those that blame the o-line mostly, and those that blame Hasselbeck. Were the fumbles Spencer’s fault or Hasselbeck’s? Is Hasselbeck’s lack of throwing downfield due to his shoulder, his double clutching, or the poor o-line blocking?

by LantermanC on Dec 16, 2009 11:26 AM PST reply actions

I like to alternate between blaming both

O-line play and QB play have been deficient this season. You can try and figure out which one is more to blame, but at the end of the day we have glaring needs in both areas.

Except for the Arizona @ Qwest game, I haven't found the line

to be that horrible. So I guess I’m more of a blame Hasselbeck person than a blame the o-line person.

Odd thing is, I could see the Seahawks not drafting an OL or a QB this year (random scenario, Joe Haden, Dan Williams/Bryan Price, Golden Tate). Of course, if we sign Campbell and Marcus McNeil, I certainly wouldn’t complain…

Mora seems to like to talk a lot.

Per Sando, Mora thinks Hawks need to be tougher. Then again, when a team is losing, the coach at least has to make an effort to look like he’s bringing about change.

by LantermanC on Dec 16, 2009 11:55 AM PST reply actions

Don't like this.

I like Unger better at Guard and it looked like the fumbled snaps were on Matt, not Spencer. I slo don’t like Spencer at guard, he looked awful as a guard in 2006. Wrotto must be in the doghouse.

I'm actually ok with this

Three games left, no playoff hopes, Spencers last year of his contract, let’s see what Unger can do. Why not? With the way the o-line’s been playing, Hasselbeck will probably get killed anyway.

by B.B.Finnegan on Dec 16, 2009 12:58 PM PST reply actions

Agree.

In theory, he was drafted to be a center. We’re out of contention, so let’s see what comes out of it.

And on that note

Butler’s likely to get more playing time what with Burly injured right? Now all we need to see is Mike Teel under center. Honestly, we oughta do that if Matt goes down again.

I like Unger playing as a center to get some experience (provided it doesn't get Hasselbeck killed)

but I don’t like how it seems like Mora is blaming Spencer (the whole “I don’t know why he still has a cast on his hand” comment).

by LantermanC on Dec 16, 2009 2:26 PM PST up reply actions

Wasn't Unger basically drafted to end up at center?

Or at least to be a potential long-term solution at the position? I don’t see anything wrong with giving him some snaps at center now, with the season being effectively over.

I like this move

If Unger was originally drafted to be a center, then let the kid play. If he works out, great! If not, oh well. Anything to help assess our needs for the offseason is a good idea to me!

by chrees on Dec 16, 2009 2:24 PM PST reply actions

That's the idea, but the change isn't being made in an effort to eke out wins

This change is being made to better understand talent and where players will fall in the inevitable incoming rebuild.

Spencer isn’t coming back unless he’s brilliant at guard, which is highly unlikely. Now they’re seeing if Unger will stick in his place.

The change isn't being made to better understand talent

It’s being made to scapegoat players on the line. Getting to see what Unger can do is a benefit but it’s not why Mora made the change.

by Nate Dogg on Dec 16, 2009 6:24 PM PST up reply actions

Those are you're opinions, not the facts of what was said in the press conferences

You’re guessing, which is fine, but you shouldn’t state it like it’s fact.

So, in your opinion, why did Mora make the change then? To make himself feel better? Look better? Have we been watching two different press conferences?

I’m just trying to be fair, I don’t think Mora is the best coach, I don’t even know if I want him back next year, but I don’t think he’s all the sudden Satan ripping players heads off and chewing on their ballsacks

by B.B.Finnegan on Dec 16, 2009 11:08 PM PST up reply actions

I agree with Nate Dogg on this one...

Spencer hasn’t been the worst player on the line.

If he signs somewhere else in the offseason and goes on to have a successful career it will be Kevin Mawae redux. I don’t think he’s elite by any means, but I don’t see him as being any more at fault than Lock or Sims or Unger or Willis. Yet when blame gets tossed around, he receives 75% of it…

"I was very disappointed in our performance … I know a lot of people are,"

"I’m not happy at all with the way our offensive line is playing… And we’re going to take an extremely hard look at that in the next two days, and I can’t promise you that they’re wont be changes."

Those are Mora’s words from two different press conferences. I’m not guessing about why these changes were made.

by Nate Dogg on Dec 18, 2009 1:59 PM PST up reply actions

Spencer's gone.

Even up to this week, I was on his side, a defender. As time marched on it became more difficult to defend him. He’s the most tenured guy at any of the positions, and he just simply should have been able to do more, by now. Those that think he’s been awful are off and don’t get it. But this isn’t a case of high expectations because he was a first rounder, he’s failed to deliver. Personally I think Locklear’s failed to deliver, more, but I spose there’s no latitude there if Hasselbeck is to survive. But aside from Locklear, Spencer is the one that has failed to deliver, the least acceptable of the woes in the transition to this new scheme.

And even now I’d rather we re-sign him, Guard or Center I don’t care. But regardless of the GM, there will be a change of scenery. Unger’s comments seem to strongly support Spencer, he sounds like he’d prefer to stay at RG.

It’s too bad we now have one more offensive need, though. If anything at all was set on offense, I figured the interior was good enough and would materialize enough to be good, next year, and the rest of the offense needed upgrading. Now, I guess Carlson, Sims and Unger are the three that I feel we can build upon.

After watching both press conferences this week

I really think some of you are waaaay overblowing Mora’s attitude on Spencer. I don’t get the impression he’s throwing him under the bus or unfairly ragging on him.

by B.B.Finnegan on Dec 16, 2009 4:44 PM PST reply actions

I'm with you

Maybe I missed something but I never saw him give all out Mare treatment to Spencer.

by kearly on Dec 16, 2009 5:57 PM PST up reply actions

He promised to make changes on the line and questioned why Spencer was still wearing a cast

It wasn’t the same thing he did to Mare but to me this is a coach thats suddenly desperate to spread the blame. He’s made it clear that he’s making changes based on performance, not some kind of youth movement, and he’s made Spencer the face of those performance issues by benching him.

by Nate Dogg on Dec 16, 2009 6:32 PM PST up reply actions

It doesn't sound half as bad as you make it out to be

He said a lot of good things about Spencer today. Players get benched when they don’t play well and even if Spencer was fine, Unger is planned to be the center next year. With the season over, why wouldn’t they get Unger in there to see how he does?

I don’t see that much scapegoating at all. If people want to question whether the schemes are good, or the coaching staff, fine, but don’t exaggerate a little thing like this just to fill an agenda.

by B.B.Finnegan on Dec 16, 2009 11:03 PM PST up reply actions

I see a bit of both

I think he’s spreading the blame. But some of the blame is deserved. And it seems like singling Spencer out, I guess I have more of a problem with that than that he’s unhappy with him, but it’s one of the few underperforming positions where there’s latitude. Locklear is the biggest disappointment on the line. Where do we go, then? Nothing much to do there. Spencer is the next most disappointing because of his tenure. He’s not been the worst of the five, but not the best, and not good enough. So, let’s see what happens.

I’d like to see more Bryant. More Butler (will). I think Jamar Adams has been proven too slow. There’s not much else to do but upgrade talent in the offseason, and monitor who keeps it up through the irrelevance.

by jacobstevens on Dec 17, 2009 2:53 PM PST up reply actions

Even the "all out Mare treatment" was misinterpreted and overblown by fans and some pundits

So it doesn’t surprise me that so many people are reading these latest press conference remarks in the most negative way possible.
