OTFP: Consider Your Childhood Raped
This might be a little early, I don't know what the timeline on Off Topic Fan Posts should be, but I figured it would be good to get this going earlier in the week so we could chit-chat.
Disclaimers are off course to be as relatively civil as we ever are, to leave The Ospreys to their own discussion, and to not make fun of BrianL for being short.
You can of course talk about whatever invades your thoughts, but I thought a good jump-off topic might be the decade long infatuation with turning everything I loved about being a kid into shit. Transformers, GI JOE; what was once awesome is now lame. At least we'll always have those awesome old-school stop motion movies like Sinbad, no one would ever mess with those!
Unfortunately, I found myself enjoying that trailer...oh well, at least it isn't Michael Bay.

Hollywood's recent uninspired spate
Is getting tiring. Someone has to ban the concept of “reimagining”. It’s asinine and it never works.
The one that probably grinds my gears more than anything else is Paul WS Anderson (Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil) doing a remake of the Long Good Friday, one of the greatest gangster films of all time. And one he could not possibly do justice to.
Oh well.
I'll probably go see that movie
The original Clash was a pretty good movie. The new one has a decent cast. Perseus is played by the same guy who has the lead role in Avatar. Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes play Zeus and Hades.
The director is a bit more sketchy though, and the director is probably the 2nd most important part of a movie after the script. He did the 2nd Hulk movie, Transporter 2, and perhaps worst of all, “Danny the dog,” (aka “Unleashed”) the movie where Jet Lee is constantly on a leash and treated like an animal by Bob Hoskins.
Good trailer though. I’m a bit forgiving with ancient epics. For example I actually liked Troy even though everyone panned it (while it wasn’t very accurate to Homer’s version, it was pretty close to Shakespeare’s “Troilus and Cressida”). Looking forward to this one. This summer I’m guessing?

I was upset on the first viewing....
due to my love of the original Odyssey and Iliad. However, upon further review it is quite solid and takes the spirit of the story and works rather effectively if not the entirety correctly. I watched using the hubris and hamartia of the main characters as a focal point instead of the accuracy of the events through Homer’s original telling…

Ugh squared.
Troy pissed me off hugely. The Iliad is one of my favorite books (Robert Fagles’ translation being my favorite) and I thought the movie had great potential (good cast, good effects) upon seeing the previews. Then I saw it and wanted my money back. They gutted the story and presented us with a hollow shell of Homer’s epic.
I like every epic.
Troy was great. I liked Kingdom of Heaven. LOTR was ok, but I can’t stand to watch it because it’s too damn long. On a side note, Orlando Bloom really vexes me, I am terribly vexed.
Pump the brakes there chico.
LOTR was ok?

Loved it the first time. For whatever reason, I can't watch it again without fast forwarding through

I can see this.
But its the one movie that I will clear a weekend to watch the whole series.

Does 'the Last Samurai' qualify as an epic?
I think anything that has over the top grand fight scenes and takes place a few hundred years ago like Gladiator is an epic. Though I don’t really think of Braveheart as an epic.
My brother and I always make the joke.
If the Last Samurai was color graded better it would’ve won a academy award.

Which episode? I don't remember him...
Watching F&G, I’m amazed at how many of the characters I recognize. Besides the main cast, they had Karen from the Office (Rashida Jones), Locke’s dad from Lost as Jason Segal’s Dad, and a bunch of others. I think every episode I could name someone in a different show.
The episode is called "We've Got Spirit"
I think it’s the one where Sam becomes the mascot.

Add Megan Fox looks like she has greasy pancake makeup about an inch thick on her face. I don’t find her that attractive at all, I don’t know what the fuss is all about.

Shia Lebouf is a great actor
I have seen him in some earlier roles, bit parts and what not, that kid can act. He does it convincingly too.
I think that statement may have been an embellishment of your hatred for Megan Fox.
I personally wouldn’t want that stupid girl in my movie but that is what movies are today. All looks and no brains.
"If, now this is a hypothetical, If I were offered the job, I would start with the offensive line" Mike Holmgren on KJR
Shia Lebouf to me is a decent actor.
He won’t blow you away like Cate Blanchett or Leo, but he gets the job done and you are convinced. He is deff. not as bad as Will Smith, or Tom Cruise.
He actually is pretty good
I think the two highest profile roles just weren’t well delivered to him, to perform. The Transformers movies are just way too quickly paced to make much use of the actually pretty decent humor. I think the script was probably well written, I appreciated the lines he had, but they were crammed in so tight and fast they dropped like a rock. I’m with Llama on Megan Fox, all the way, too. I really disliked the Transformer movies. I am dramatically relieved when G.I. Joe turned out to be all right.
But Lebeouf is good. Stupid ass name, but he’s risen above it.
by jacobstevens on Dec 18, 2009 2:36 PM PST up reply actions
It's not his acting,
it’s his uncanny resemblance to Urban Meyer that makes me crazy. Also, being cast in movies where he is too young for the part. Sorry dude, you’re like 21, and not really convincing as a suit-wearing adult. As far as Megan Fox goes, every time I see her, it looks like she either has pancake batter or olive oil smeared all over her face. I’m guessing bad acne, but who knows.

Wow, complete opposite for me
And my expectations were low. Just wanted to enjoy some eye candy, just a popcorn movie. But Transformers wouldn’t let me enjoy it. It wouldn’t let me. The rapid pace was supposed to make everything dramatic and exciting, but all it did was patronize me.
G.I. Joe was more sappy, but just delivered better. The FX weren’t as much of a spectacle but they were presented so that I could appreciate what they were.

Disagree. It was the 2nd best Star Trek movie thus far, behind Wrath of Khan.
Khan was so much better than anything else ever put out by that franchise, and the franchise like Bond and Batman was in DESPERATE need of a reboot. It seemed every Star Trek movie after the whale one was progressively more insignificant. The Next Generation movies were adequate at best, and the whole franchise was just sort of… fizzling out.
You can hold it up and not run with it, but it opens the door for continuation of the Star Trek iconography while taking it… heh heh… bold new places.

I liked The Undiscovered Country.
Other than that I agree that the movies were getting progressively worse, and yeah, the TNG movies weren’t great either (except for First Contact). I also thought it was interesting that the last TNG movie and the reboot both had the enemy be a Romulan with a superweapon.
I don't want to get too hung up on the science or continuation spectrum with past episodes...
I just want a new set of “bad guys” for them to battle. No more “rogue” vulcans or romulans. Give me a massive widespread battle type threat, or something darker that causes civil war on a massive scale. Maybe even have romulans on one side, klingons on another and humanity split equally or some such.
I WANT a massive scale war movie in space, with characters I know, dammit! (or characters I don’t, whatever.) I want an epic set in space, based on war. The Iliad of the skies…

By the way, as long as we're off topic...
just wrapped up a 12-0 city league season, with 3 OT wins during the session. (In other words, we weren’t a ridiculously better team than everyone, just good enough to always find a way to win down the stretch.)
This is 2 straight league championships after 4 years of futility, and my first undefeated season since little league in Olympia, when the South Bay Braves 6th grade team went 17-0 and won the championship over Westside and their allstar future MLB stud, Travis Lee.
Good times, good times!
Also, a buddy that came and watched created a new word— he said he was glad we didn’t get Patriot-ated in the championship.

This is basketball I'm assuming?
The problem with city leagues is that it’s full of ex-HS and college players. There should be more crappy leagues for people who just want to play for exercise. It’s no fun getting dunked on.
Heheh.
Understood. There really should be. I’m no longer dunking on people, but then I’m 34 and my better days have passed. Honestly, I hate leagues with teams that shouldn’t be there, either too good or not good enough. We had 10 teams in the league, and 2 had no business there. The others though, were surprisingly equal. We just always beat them in the end.

I really didn't mind Iron Man.
I thought they did the Comic Justice with excellent effects and they didn’t try to overdo the technology involved in the plot.
"If, now this is a hypothetical, If I were offered the job, I would start with the offensive line" Mike Holmgren on KJR
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Iron Man.
I probably should not have been, because Jon Favreu is a great director (Elf, I Love You Man, AND Iron Man? Talent.) but still, it became one of my favorite comic book movies. Under DK and Superman 2: Donner Cut.
HUGE SUCCESS
Had my lasik yesterday (got “upgraded” from PRK at the last moment) and it went great. Less than 24 hours later I have 20/20 vision. I won’t lie, it was pretty terrifying going through the procedure but as far as pain and discomfort goes it was surprisingly minimal. About 4 or 5 hours later my eyes felt fine, a little puffy is all. As of right now I’ve got a nasty looking hematoma on my left eye but I feel 100%.
It's pretty amazing
When you’re going through the procedure you have moments where your eyes black out and just some general oddities with your vision. But as soon as they’re done they sit you up and the world is in focus, I got a huge portion of my vision back basically instantly.
Doesn't the actual "cutting" part of the procedure only last seconds?
I will smash your face into a jelly.

Yep
26 seconds for me, they do a count down. I was in and out of the operating room in 10-15 minutes.
Congrats. That's awesome and hilarious.
Though I think if I get it done, I’ll be doing the same thing and reading every sign possible and saying ‘look, that sign is 5 feet away and not in giant letters, and I can READ IT!’ And people will stare at me like I’m mentally handicapped.
I would like to take this opportunity to say
Scruffy, you were right. Avatar was brilliant. That was my circa 1977 Star Wars film experience.
Oh. My. God.
I still have a headache from the 3D glasses, but not only was it worth it, but I’ll be going back to watch it in IMAX shortly too.
It was just too good and too many things happening not to catch it twice in the theatre.
EPIC.
