Mike Holmgren Offered Cleveland Job

This is bound to generate some buzz, so here you go. The Cleveland Browns have apparently extended an offer to Mike Holmgren to become a sort of Football Czar within their organization.

A few minutes ago John Clayton was on with Mike Salk on 710ESPN and confirmed that Holmgren had received an offer which he believes is worth around $4.5-$5M. Furthermore, Clayton said during the interview that the Seahawks have indicated they plan to "go a different direction" and are showing no interest in acquiring his services.

Hell. Yes.

I love ya, Walrus, but not with this team anymore.

I will smash your face into a jelly.

I'm curious who made it onto the interview list and what type of questions they will ask.

I also wonder how involved Paul Allen is considering is illness. Don’t hear much about that.

by Menthu Ra on Dec 17, 2009 1:01 PM PST reply actions

Huh.

You’re nuts if you think Paul Allen isn’t going to decide who gets this job.

by TheLaird on Dec 17, 2009 3:20 PM PST up reply actions

I doubt Todd Leweike would be employed with the Hawks if that were true

Remember: we don’t have a crazy, overbearing owner like other franchises (cough Raiders cough).

Though admittedly I have no proof to support this.

I just kinda assume this is Leweike’s job and Allen might be asked to provide a blessing once a candidate was chosen. Nothing more.

The demise of the Broncos in '09 is our future. Pray hard.

by Nick Andron on Dec 17, 2009 3:30 PM PST up reply actions

I don't buy it.

Allen doesn’t have to be an overbearing owner (BTW, Al Davis is the GM of the Raiders, not just the owner), to decide who is going to actually run his football team. It would take a lot to convince me that Leweike actually made the decision to fire Ruskell, or will make the decision as to who will replace him.

by TheLaird on Dec 17, 2009 4:04 PM PST up reply actions

I imagine Ruskell went to Leiweke seeking clarification

and Leiweke discussed the matter with his advisers and Allen and told Ruskell the decision wasn’t made yet.

by John Morgan on Dec 17, 2009 4:10 PM PST up reply actions

I agree.

Allen is a businessman, not a football guru.

Let me put it another way...

…it’s just weird for anyone to say Paul Allen’s input on hiring “isn’t that important to me.” The only way it could not be important to you is is a) you didn’t care what the decision was, or b) you didn’t think he was actually going to make the decision. If there’s a c), here, please let me know!

by TheLaird on Dec 17, 2009 4:01 PM PST up reply actions

C) I was responding to how involved Allen would be in the hiring process

and stated that it didn’t matter much to me. I assume Allen will ok the final decision, but that’s a very minor part of the process.

by John Morgan on Dec 17, 2009 4:09 PM PST up reply actions

Allen is an owner

He signs off on what is done, but I doubt he meddles too much with the day to day. I don’t think he bought the Seattle Seahawks to have another full time job.

by John Morgan on Dec 17, 2009 4:12 PM PST up reply actions

Well...

Hiring or firing an GM isn’t “day-to-day” decision. I guess, not owning a pro football team myself, I wouldn’t know for certain, but I don’t think a guy buys a football team to let somebody else decide who will be in charge of it.

And I don’t buy the “he doesn’t have time because he has cancer” thing. This I do have first hand experience with, and you’d be surprised how much time you can have on your hands to think about things when you’re in bed all day or waiting for doctors and medical technicians.

by TheLaird on Dec 17, 2009 4:19 PM PST up reply actions

I didn't say anything about Allen's health, but I agree that I do not think his treatment will affect his time

I do think it might affect how much stress he wishes to undertake, but that wasn’t really my point either.

My point was only that I do not know how much Allen will impact who is hired, that I trust he is wise enough to defer to the people he is paying to make this decision, and that Leiweke was hired precisely for moments like this, and it is his job to handle it.

"the Seahawks have indicated they plan to "go a different direction""

I want to know what this means, if it just means a different direction as far as what we have now, or a completely new direction entirely. This offseason could be nuts in many different ways.

by B.B.Finnegan on Dec 17, 2009 1:39 PM PST reply actions

I think it means "a different direction than hiring a VP of Football Ops, aka "Czar"

Leiweke already sent the message that they want a GM to come in a “do it our way”. I took that to mean they don’t want a Bill Parcells / Mike Holmgren type to come in, clean house, and build a new organization. Holmgren is likely at the stage of his career where he is not about to play second fiddle to anyone. He wants control of an organization, and he’s earned his chance at that.

That is not what the Seahawks organization is ready to give up to anyone right now. They apparently think they still have some good people they don’t want to lose, and have some work in progress that will bear fruit.

I think it’s possible they do clean house. Without the season being over, there’s no way Leiweke would say that yet, though.

by Nick Andron on Dec 17, 2009 2:01 PM PST up reply actions

Sorry guys

It’s an ongoing process. The founders of SBN have invested a ridiculous amount of time and their own money into making this idea work, but it doesn’t work without money. I find the borders to be a much better solution than sponsored content. In fact, I asked out of posting sponsored content because I disagreed with the direction I thought it was leading SBN. Let’s consider the borders a compromise. All ads are annoying, but like television, it’s either ads or charging a service fee. SBN must pay its bills somehow, and with 800,000 unique visitors a day, there’s bills.

by John Morgan on Dec 17, 2009 2:02 PM PST up reply actions

Good idea.

It’s the ‘against my will’ part of it that angers me.

A large part of my work experience has included web usability

confirmation of a non-destructive action would replace an annoyance with a new annoyance, in requiring an additional step.

The best solution would be to have all links outside of the SBN domain open in a new tab/window, with a conditional confirmation for navigating away from the page regardless of destination, when the comment or reply subject and body textboxes are not NULL.

I do believe in what SBN is doing in a global sense. I am given complete editorial freedom, but get to play with this great software and get to be connected with great sites like Lookout Landing.

I also like how it’s connected to bloggers of other teams. I enjoy the “answer your questions” posts from other team’s bloggers as well as being able to contribute to discussions on other team’s sites.

People would then frequent lesser Seahawks blogs w/out having to pay for it.

I don’t pay for fantasy football information much the same way – there is just too much free information out there to justify paying for it. As much as I love FG, a price that steep would either piss me off or simply cause me to find another site to talk Seahawks for free. I’m glad we don’t have to pay for this. It adds to the discussions and creates a better environment due to the number of users and the solid moderation. John’s writing is interesting and unique – worth paying for, mind you, I just wouldn’t choose to unless it was really reasonable. I’m glad I don’t have to make that decision and get to enjoy FG anytime I want to (for free).

This.

I wouldn't support the move

Information should be free. Furthermore, it’s virtually impossible to protect information anyway. Mel Kiper’s mock is protected by Insider? Well, someone has Insider and can copy and paste it where it’s not.

I was wondering about the lack of sponsored content, actually

I notice some other NFL SBN sites have a weekly ‘Red Zone Report’ sponsored by your good friend ‘the Channel’. I am perfectly fine with not receiving such a report every week, it is way too forced. The border ads I have no qualms with, I just hope they can be worked to not slow the site down so much, but that’s a small quibble compared to the building of what I believe to be a high-quality collection of blogs.

by Nick Andron on Dec 17, 2009 3:31 PM PST up reply actions

I think Quinn would be a decent WCO fit.

He’s not known for his arm and I suspect Holmgren would hire the right people to teach him how to become a better decision-maker and QB. Maybe after Zorn gets fired, he’d become a QB-coach there. It’s certainly plausible.

This.

I'd take

Derek Anderson and a 5th if Cleveland would fall for it.

Anderson, Seneca and a rookie or Teel could fight it out for starting QB.

If Webster is hired and the coaches retained

How pissed would Ruskell be? They wouldn’t give him an extension but they promote his assistant. I know that would make me mad.

by kearly on Dec 17, 2009 3:50 PM PST up reply actions

I wonder if Ruskell misplayed his hand

He’s wont to do that. If Webster is hired, I can only assume Ruskell might have been retained if he didn’t demand an answer.

by John Morgan on Dec 17, 2009 3:58 PM PST up reply actions

Interesting thought.

On a side note, I wonder which minority candidate(s) they will interview. They have to before hiring even Webster, should they go that route, don’t they?

This.

by Misfit74 on Dec 17, 2009 4:37 PM PST up reply actions

Webster is totally the guy to hire...

…if you were perfectly happy with Ruskell, and Ruskell was retiring or fired for some reason other than his performance in running the team. Otherwise, I wouldn’t call him a “front runner.”

by TheLaird on Dec 17, 2009 4:42 PM PST up reply actions

I wouldn't mind if he took the Cleveland job

Quinn is a recent 1st round pick and Anderson did produce once and is still young. I’m guessing MH will feel he the urge to try to fix them before investing in a 3rd QB. And though we’ve joked about it, the possibility of sending Hasselbeck to Cleveland is not totally unrealistic and would be a good move for both parties. For those reasons, the probability of Cleveland drafting a QB ahead of us drops a little. There are other teams looking at QB, but anything that thins the pool helps our chances of getting a QB in 2010.

Cleveland is the better choice anyway. They are farther along in their rebuild and have a good OL. In Cleveland MH would be a savior, in Seattle he’d be a retread with baggage. Plus, I’ve always felt a little sorry for Cleveland Browns fans. Their team has pretty much always sucked, except for a brief period in the 80’s. They deserve an exciting and fun team, and I think Holmgren can provide that. Plus, they are in the AFC, so they will not compete against the Seahawks for the playoffs.

by kearly on Dec 17, 2009 3:59 PM PST reply actions

The impression I have always gotten

is that Cleveland fans tend to be obnoxious loud and annoying. In all the wrong ways. For example, yelling loudly both when your defense is on the field (good thing) and when your offense is on the field (bad thing). Then again, I’m probably spoiled by Seattle sports fans that seem to know when to scream their heads off and when to be quiet. Also, that’s largely second hand information that I’ve gotten from other people who were at Cleveland games.

by Fear on Dec 17, 2009 6:45 PM PST up reply actions

On Leiwecki and Clayton

First, I haven’t seen talk of Leiwecke-v.-Holmgren on this blog site, but I’ve seen chatter on TNT’s Seahawks Insider about how Tod supposedly hates Holmy and/or vice versa. Can someone perhaps tell us more about that dynamic?

And…

And I wouldn’t be surprised if Holmgren’s agent and the Seahawks were blowing smoke up people’s asses about the Seahawks’ non-interest in re-retaining Holmgren’s services, especially in light of the pall cast over everything by public knowledge of the Mora Deal last year. I think until the Cleveland deal is inked, a Seahawks-Holmgren arrangement should not be entirely dismissed as a possibility. I mean, unless it’s really true that Tod and Mike can’t work together. So sad.

by dagraham on Dec 17, 2009 4:21 PM PST reply actions

To the first, I don't know (it's Leiweke BTW) and don't care to know

Publicly stating that Holmgren is not in the conversation, something Clayton’s report does, probably means Holmgren is not in the conversation.

by John Morgan on Dec 17, 2009 4:41 PM PST up reply actions

I'm amazed that this is true, but I've become old

I prefer Holmgren. I am the minority it seems. Perhaps it is time for me to let go. My preference is a man who knows football from having played and having had success; a man who has had success here and knows how to do it. Time to see what change for change sake leads. See ya, Mike. You are missed. Hopefully, we won’t regret.

It is what it is...

by kidder95 on Dec 17, 2009 8:41 PM PST reply actions

I think we could do worse than Holmgren

But I’m ready to see someone come in and be new and fresh and good.

by Strictnine on Dec 18, 2009 8:15 AM PST up reply actions

I just can't believe that people don't get that ...

the best candidates for this job are still working for their respective teams. The Hawks would be complete fools to hire a proven mediocrity solely on the basis of familiarity when they could ask for permission to talk to front office personnel from the Saints, Colts, Patriots, or any other GM that actually had a good draft after 2000-2001.

It’s the same ill-thought out process that resulted in the Mora hiring. But I guess a lot of people were totally on board with that too, not considering his unimpressive track record as a head coach either …
