Off Topic FanPost: End-of-the-Year List Madness
Top ten of 2009:
10. Glassware: I learned the right glasses and the pour for my favorite beers. It's nice that as I grow older I am no longer the scrappy drunk that used to steal quarters from atop my father's dresser, but now the refined drunk that can wax philosophical over a chalice of Hop Rod Rye Ale.
9. No politics:
8. Increased awareness of gluten intolerance: A blessing for my wife and therefor I.
7. Sauvie Island: A place I can swim naked (alone).
6. Rob Sims: We'll look back at 2009 as the year Rob Sims took a big step forward as an offensive lineman.
5. No we won't: I wrack my brain searching for something meaningful from this season and only see meaningful decay.
4. Bands I discovered or learned to appreciate more this year: St. Vincent, The Kinks, Animal Collective, Murs, Rock Plaza Central, Tortoise, Mclusky, Les Savy Fav, The Rural.., Destroyer, The New Pornographers, Cheap Trick,
3. I mean, even Brandon Mebane has kind of been a disappointment: The shit I get to complain about.
2. Continued love and learning of the English language: Best book I read this year was 'Parasites Like Us'. I'm a big believer that science fiction can be much better than it is. This book grew grating towards its conclusion, and it had a few 'Monkey Wrench Gang' -like abuses of plot, but it was modern, informed, fresh and thoroughly engaging.
Mclusky has the best song lyrics of the year, Murs the most poetic and Les Savy Fav wins best storytelling.
The best pure writing I've read this season has come from the conversations of game threads. I can't remember any specific run. I can remember laughing my ass off.
1. Z: What desperate days these be in Seattle sports if not for Jack Zduriencik.

I'm a little surprised to see the Kinks and Cheap Trick here...
However, I realize not everybody was raised on their parents’ music.
What I would like, however, is if possible a single song from each of these bands listed above that I should listen to as a friendly introduction to them, as I couldn’t name a song from any of them other than the Kinks and Cheap Trick.

My latest facebook post... and then a list of 10...
SWEET. Sitting here watching Extract. Not happy watching a woman cheating on her husband… and then a freakin tickle on my arm. I look down, a giant spider was on my arm. It’s now dead, but I’m pissed off at cheating women and spiders. I don’t care which is fictional and which is real. I think they’re probably both far too real.
Oh well.
White Christmas here in Denver, that’s kinda cool. Almost makes up for cheating spiders and basement women. Err.. whatever.
As far as lists of things…
1) I want Chris Spencer to be an All Pro for another team since he isn’t valued by our coaches or enough of our fanbase. Kevin Mawae redux, and…. I want Jason Campbell for 2010. Stopgap with upside, and picks can be used on other replacement talent instead of a QB to develop over a long period.
2) Field Gulls. Found and became a member of the community this year. I appreciate that there is a place online for us poor misguided Hawk fans, particularly with my living in Colorado, not exactly a Hawk stronghold.
3) A quality first baseman for the M’s, and a healthy season for all critical starters and pitchers. Great work “Z”!!!!
4) I’m hoping my move back to WA to be seamless, and the risky “work” situation I’m taking a chance with will be a smashing success, allowing me a better life.
5) The girl I’m talking to in WA to actually work out… I’ve become such a cynic of the years, but I’ve got some cause for optimism and she seems to have her shit together.
6) No more basement-room-in-Colorado spiders.
7) Gonzaga and UW to meet in the NCAA Tourney to decide the best team in WA. The later in the tourney, the better.
8) House, Community, Modern Family and Always Sunny in Philly— thank you for being on the air, and Hulu, thank you for putting them on my computer.
9) Improving my prime rib, gravy, yorkshire pudding and overall cooking ability… in another series of experiences in life, I might have gone to culinary school. Hoping Christmas’ meal is the best yet.
10) Facebook. Seriously! I signed up reluctantly this year, and have found myself absolutely thrilled to find and catch up with so many old friends, and I’ve gotten new friends through that process as well. Never thought I’d say this, but Facebook has bettered my life.

Its not even up for discussion. Because if you don’t want to see it then you’re missing out on the most incredible movie experience I have ever had.

I will say that the plot is decidedly average.
Think “Dancing with Wolves” set in a science fiction universe. That said…
Every so often there are films that are so technologically marvelous they overcome whatever the plot may lack and elevate themselves to elite status. I saw this movie last Friday with my dad, and the first thing he said as we walked out of the theater was “I haven’t felt this way about a movie since A New Hope in 1977.”
On a sidenote
I think Avatar is going to be what finally makes 3D home theater setups take off.
I don't know about average...
I’d say it was “solid.” Average has such a below average sound to it… but the plot was definitely adequate and enjoyable, and eminently watchable. I did enjoy the character development and the characters themselves, which were somewhat more in depth than most sci-fi. I’m not saying they were full of depth, but there was enough depth.
As far as the Dances With Wolves reference, there is some of that to be certain, but there are other tangents that are developed or pleasantly left unsaid while being quite obviously implied that bear refreshing in our culture. Many people have forgotten Dances with Wolves, too… so a retelling of that story in a different context is a worthwhile endeavor I think.

by Tyler Jorgensen on Dec 23, 2009 9:29 AM PST up reply actions
Imo
Less “Dances with Wolves”, and more “Pocahontas”. But you’re right, the plot isn’t going to blow you away. And the casting was spectacular.
OK, so I saw it.
You’re both wrong. It’s a complete remake of Fern Gully.
Which is completely fine. I think it made a great story. It wasn’t groundbreaking, but the premise still was. And still done with diligence and depth. The plot was pretty above average for a movie like this.

Uhm, that's a kinda funny response.
Why “No.”
The 3D or something else? I never thought 3D could be like this, but it was uniquely amazing.
Also, sidenote— the Schrek 3D preview was pretty awesome too. Maybe there is something behind this newfangled 3D concept!

I'm looking forward to "The Cabin in the Woods" being made into 3d

Dances with Smurfs? Not so much.

Smurfs aren't 9 feet tall.
I was skeptical too, and was blown away. The world Pandora created for the movie is worth the cost alone, and the plot wasn’t that bad. It wasn’t the greatest story ever, but it was definitely a watchable plot. And you are willing to wait a year for a horror movie in 3D? That seems like a more predictable and boring plot… just sayin’.
Bird Law in this country isn't governed by reason.
by Tyler Jorgensen on Dec 23, 2009 12:53 PM PST up reply actions
Well, not literally
I’ve already seen a horror movie in 3d. And a kids movie. My wait is only because that’s how long it will take the movie to be converted to 3d. And yes, Whedon has always been very predictable and boring, I expect nothing less from Cabin. It’s his shtick, don’t take that from him!
by B.B.Finnegan on Dec 23, 2009 2:14 PM PST up reply actions
That's ok, and I'm grateful for the pioneering
I really am. As someone who’s worked in 3d, I know how hard and time intensive it is, especially something like this and I’m sure I don’t even know the half of it. Now, I’ll wait for one that won’t bore me to death. It’s just a movie, it’s not a big deal if someone doesn’t go see it.
by B.B.Finnegan on Dec 23, 2009 2:27 PM PST up reply actions
I just can't understand, honestly...
how you are certain it will bore you, and how you mind is unjustifiably made up despite not hearing a bad thing about it.

I’m not saying it’s the greatest movie in the world, but I am ABSOLUTELY saying it is worth seeing before judging.

Movies I've seen in the theater this year that I recall offhand were
Watchmen, A Serious Man, Extract, Thirst, District 9, The Road, Dead Snow, The Box, Choke, Monsters vs. Aliens, Zombieland, My Bloody Valentine, Drag Me to Hell.
Not all of them were good. Some were terrible. Drag Me to Hell was beyond terrible. I loved Watchmen. Thirst was pretty great.
I keep intending to see Inglorious Basterds and Men Who stare at Goats. Can’t wait for The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.
I tend to skip most Hollywood blockbusters though I usually see quite a few when I go back home. They have much normal/ordinary tastes. I was surprised at how decent Star Trek was. Certainly better then all the next generation MOVIES.
by B.B.Finnegan on Dec 23, 2009 3:30 PM PST up reply actions
That listing makes me think there's room for Avatar in your viewing experience.
I just saw Inglorious Basterds last night (my first ever redbox purchase), I was somewhat disappointed though it was watchable. Just not among the better works in Tarentino’s library.
Star Trek is your guiding light here. I too, was not expecting much and was pleasantly surprised by Star Trek. Consider Avatar the same experience, but for different reasons.

All I'll say is this is a film worth taking a gamble on.
I didn’t want to see it at all and was dragged into it last week. James Cameron shut me up in a hurry.
Same here
I was not open to the 3D thing at all, but within 10 minutes I kept looking over at my wife to check she was seeing the same thing as I was. It was amazing.
Easily as much visual ‘how the hell do they do that’ impact as when I first saw Star Wars, Jurassic Park or Titanic (note: I would only re-watch Star Wars today, but am very glad I saw all of these on the big screen).
Seriously recommend it in 3D to anyone.

If you can check it out at an IMAX!
I have seen this twice now and I have to say the experience of seeing it on a 6 story screen was surreal. If you live in Seattle go check it out at the Boeing IMAX, hands down the best theater I have ever been to.
Avatar is truly a technical milestone.. The bar has officially been raised. The 3D experience is far beyond anything we have seen before. I was skeptical about the blue people as I am sure others were as well. But I had a feeling James Cameron wouldn’t get up off his mountain of Titanic money to make something unless it was awesome. And Avatar is most defiantly awesome!
Where abouts?
Maybe we meet up? Since I’ll have to go south to see it anyway.

Well it should be 3D imax
unless your imax theater isn’t 3D capable.
by Scruffy Lefty on Dec 23, 2009 2:35 PM PST up reply actions
No, it's either one or the other.
In order to get the 3D effect the film is showed in what’s called stereophonic 3D, which just looks like a complete blur unless you’re wearing 3D glasses.
I didn't say they couldn't have it in 3D.
I just said when you see it, it’s either in 2D or 3D but not both.

Turns out I only answered half of his question.
Yes, it’s possible to watch Avatar in 3D at an IMAX. No, it’s not possible for them to display 3D and 2D at the same time.
Well anyway what BrianL said.
But most Imax showings are in 3D and from the 2 theaters that have Imax in denver – both are playing 3D.

Saw it
IT IS AMAZING. Yes, the plot is cliched and the characters one-dimensional, but it is a true experience. There is a certain element to the movie I do not want to spoil but it will not get the attention it deserves, in terms of the interactions between people and the world. I did not expect to like the movie much beyond the eye candy but it was better than I thought it would be, and I believe a must-see in the theater. A DVD of this movie won’t do it justice.
Meaningful
I guess it depends on what one means by “meaningful,” but I think there have been some meaningful things to come out of this season, as there are for every season. Most importantly, Mora is not the guy to take the Hawks to the Superbowl. Better to find that out now than invest a few years in him and then realize his shortcomings. That knowledge has meaning, even if the process of finding it out has been compound-fracture painful. Also, contrary to the aforementioned Mora’s comments, seems like we have a pretty damn good interior O-Line. Wouldn’t have said that a year ago.
But yeah, it’s sucked.
Who's geek? Let's talk SmartPhone
I almost bought the attractive, chinless version of the HTC Hero, a while back, to unlock it and use it on my GSM network since the bands are supported. But only on voice, I learned just in the nick of time. Data would need to be suffered through — gasp — EDGE.
So then I held out, til all the early October announcements for the holiday lineups came out, to see whether I’d switch networks and bottom line, with phone I was going to get. Only Droid caught my fancy. And, as much as I don’t like AT&T, as a Seattleite that does more than just browsing, they are still the best option when it comes to network. Verizon’s levied quite a bit of damage against AT&T, and rightfully so, but they’re conflating coverage with quality.
So, I briefly checked to see if the Euro version of the Droid — the Milestone — would suit me well in place of that Hero. But Droid will be the best of this generation of SmartPhones. The Qualcomm SnapDragon proc is making the just emerging new generation twice as fast.
So I’m left with three to choose from, none of which are released yet.
The HTC Passion sure looks fantastic. HTC makes tremendous phones and HTC sense is the best thing to happen to Android, when it comes to the interface. But, it’s supposed to release in early January in the US, but the leaked HTC roadmap also has it (as Bravo) releasing in Europe in April. The US never gets phones before Europe, and never that early, so I dunno if I can count on it, or wait that long.
So then the Google Nexus One comes along and blows everything up. Fantastic specs. No multitouch. I can live with that. 3G data will only support T-Mobile’s bands, though.
Besides, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 surpasses even the Nexus One in specs. I’ve had three SE phones, before, and really never was disappointed. it’s kind of my front-runner, but then it’s their first ever SmartPhone, and the pre-release versions were all said to be clunky, so I dunno.
Both Nexus One and Xperia X10 surpass all else in the most important specs. Nexus has a mechanical auto-focus on the camera, which is great. But the X10 is 8.1MP and has face recognition, both for autofocus and for tagging — you take a picture of your girl, tag it, and every other picture you take of her, the phone recognizes her and auto-tags the pic as one of her. How cool is that?
But the Nexus One has an ambient light sensor, and a proximity sensor. I don’t yet know what those will be good for, other than making Google SkyLab in actuality and, combined with Google Googles, it seems not far fetched to think your phone may be able to see you when you’re coming, know when you’re close, and search the web using your face to learn of your weaknesses. Once they start making them out of a mimetic metal alloy, I don’t doubt that it will also be able to kill you.
So that’s cool, how can you not want that. But the X10 has the most fantastic UX, called Timescape. I’ve gone on long enough and can’t really describe it well, here. But you want it. Go read about it. You want it. It runs on Android 1.6, and 2.0 SDK is out, but then Google Navigation was ported back to the Hero, which was 1.5, so I don’t think there’ll be any problems, here. So Xperia X10 is my front-runner, but it’s so hard to decide.
Who’s into this junk? Whatta y’all want, X10, nexus One? HTC Espresso? Or what do you have and love, iPhone 3GS or such?
All this avatar lead me to this question - What is your favorite film of each genre?
Action, Comedy, Romance, B-Action, Horror, Zombie, Sci-Fi….etc…
Give me a minute to think of a few.
Here goes... movies shift per time of year, mood, etc.
Quick list, I’m sure there’s stuff that I’ll forget…
Action – Grosse Point Blank
Comedy – Trading Places, Tommy Boy
Dark Comedy – Heathers, Pulp Fiction
Romance – True Romance (does that count?), Jerry McGuire I guess
B-Action – Red Dawn, The Warriors
Horror – don’t really like the genre, but if I have to pick I’d probably go with… hmm.. can I go with Alien?
Zombie – Shaun of the Dead (Haven’t seen Zombieland yet).
Sports -- ANY movie with the Rock.)
Basketball – Hoosiers
Boxing – Rocky
Football – The Program, Dazed and Confused (does that count?), Rudy
Baseball – Long Gone (hugely underrated, and most have probably never heard of it.)
Hockey – Mystery, Alaska
Bromance/Buddy Flick – The Rundown
(guilty pleasure
Fantasy – LotR
Sci-fi – Empire Strikes Back, Flash Gordon or The 5th Element
Western – Unforgiven
Unheralded Epic – 13th Warrior.

This gets tricky when you like movies that fit various genres.
Action: The Thing. Does that count as action?
B-Action: Any of the older dubbed Jackie Chan movie. I could watch those forever.
Crime: Sexy Beast.
Comedy: Top Secret, Rubin & Ed
Romance: Trust
Horror: The Tenant, 7 (both could also fit under mindfuck)
B-Horror: Evil Dead
Zombie: Dead Alive. It would be 28 days later but the movie kinda derailed at the end. The first half was so amazing though.
Vampire: Let The Right One In, Lost Boys
Sci-Fi: Alien(s), Casshern
Western: Once Upon A Time In The West
Fantasy: MirrorMask, LotR
Animation: The Triplets of Belleville, Ghost in the Shell
Drama: Synecdoche New York
Dark Comedy: Delicatessen (or horror? or sci-fi?)
War: Apocalypse Now
Mindfuck: Happiness (or Dark Comedy)

B-Action: Crank series/Big Trouble in Little China
Crime: Seven
Comedy: Hot Rod
Romance: The Holiday (This is tough category)
Horror: The Ring
B-Horror: Army of Darkness/Grindhouse
Zombie: I love most zombie movies
Vampire: NEW MOON! (Actually its the blade series)
Sci-Fi: Avatar/Star Wars/The Thing
Western: Young guns
Fantasy: LOTR/Big Fish

Top 10 List
10.) Getting the opportunity to “interview” (Read: Chat on a sports forum) with some well-known soccer commentators from the UK. Imagine if I got the chance to talk with Dick Stockton about Olindo Mah-Ray!
9.) Almost successfully emulating the Tyree Super Bowl catch. Next time I’ll try it with a DB on me.
8.) 41-0 over the Jaguars.
7.) Accidentally improving my radio signal by ripping the antenna off.
6.) Steely Dan. I love jazz.
5.) Brian Russell released.
4.) Brian Russell released.
3.) Brian Russell trucked by Forsett, then released a few weeks later.
2.) John Morgan. Thanks for giving me a second chance (actually it’s 3rd chance) to contribute on Field Gulls after some rather unpleasant mishaps during the dreaded 2008 season. But hey, we learn from those lessons when you are put in the box. Your Seahawks analysis is second to none, but we already knew that.
1.) Field Gulls. We curse each other out, we get into arguments, we call the mods nazis (and they know they are), but we’re all in this together and we set the bar for rational, thoughtful, and intelligent discussion of the team and coach we’ve come to tolerate!

Things that irrationally annoy me...
On the “Press Start” screen of Madden10 there are two cats wearing Polamalu jerseys, and two fellows wearing Fitz jerseys. Then, right between the two, there is a female inexplicably wearing a Roethlisberger jersey. God it annoys me!

Not as much as the random dude wearing the Eagles jersey.
Also, I would be pissed if I was a Cards fan and had to see images of my team’s loss every time I played the game.

All I want for Christmas is Joe Haden, Eric Berry, and Nandamukong Suh in Seahawks blue.

Holla from Tajikistan and a big
Fuck you to all of you 3D movie-going pieces of shit.
I’d cut off my left nut with a dull spoon and eat it raw in front of grandma to see a 6 stories tall movie in 3D.
onward.
Sports. I’m looking into cricket.
Music. Andrew Bird and every song he’s written was a nice find.
My 2 boys and my wife are in their 6th year of coming in at #1.
the rest is shit.
Well, fuck you too, buddy!
Merry Christmas… :)

#1: Getting engaged.
- (tie): Finding both this site and a bar for NY-dwelling Seahawk fans to gather for the games have tempered the awfulness that was the ’09 Seahawk season.
#4: Concerts.
#5: Biking.
As for the rest, it was more good than bad. Here’s hoping that continues. Happy New Year, all!
