Not to sound like an old man

but when I was a kid, my mother didn’t need to encourage me to play for 60 minutes a day, why has that changed?

by GarethLewin on Dec 6, 2009 2:50 PM PST reply actions

I make video games

I also used to play them, but still had lots of time to go out and skateboard etc.

I blame parents, not video games.

I disagree, and anyway

I never said I burnt lots of calories, just that I played outside a lot.

Elimating high fructose corn syrup would work better...

but that would make too much sense.

Just eating healthy makes sense

(Which implies lack of corn syrup)

I have a 13 month old, so I get to see if my theories hold up.

You know 50 years ago there was far more fat in our meat in America..

we’ve trimmed the fat. Everything is “anti-fat” “lean” etc. Fat isn’t the problem.

But yeah, simply shopping from the outside aisles of the market will do a ton for a healthy diet, even if you still eat massive portions like most americans (myself included.)

Bird Law in this country isn't governed by reason.

On a semi unrelated note

I discovered I’m gluten intolerant. Every gluten free alternative to gluten stuff sucks (with rare exceptions) so I’ve just cut bread/pizza/pasta out of my diet and replaced as much of it as I can with salad. I didn’t do this to lose weight, just because salad tastes better than the alternatives.

I’ve lost about 20 pounds in the last year on this ‘diet’.

by GarethLewin on Dec 6, 2009 3:04 PM PST up reply actions

Just like John's wife.

This would kill me if I couldn’t eat bread.

by LantermanC on Dec 6, 2009 3:06 PM PST up reply actions

My wife found a recipe for brownies

that uses black beans (yes I know!) instead of bread. It’s something like 1 unit chocolate, 1 unit sugar 1 unit black beans.

It sounds terrible, but they are amazing.

by GarethLewin on Dec 6, 2009 3:07 PM PST up reply actions

My wife's dad went on a diet that simply eliminated bread from his diet.

He’s lost 20 pounds or so as well. I thought about trying, but I love bread too much. Bread or grease is not my enemy, my sweet tooth is.

I think it is

but being active is what matters I think.

Not being Obese (for people that don’t have medical conditions) generally requires eating normal amounts of health food and keeping active.

As an aside, every skater I know is very thin (I worked on Sk8 and hung out at some of the skate parks in BC for ideas).

by GarethLewin on Dec 6, 2009 2:59 PM PST up reply actions

Perhaps being outside all day

and/or skating burns more than you imagine.

by GarethLewin on Dec 6, 2009 3:03 PM PST up reply actions

Skateboarding is definitely quality excercise

I’m sure its at least as good if not better than walking or biking. There is a pretty high degree of friction compared to a bike and just the act of balancing alone is a lot of hidden exercise.

My personal trainer over the last year has given me a lot of exercises that are nothing more than balancing acts, because balance uses a pretty large number of muscles. It feels easy to do, but is good exercise anyway.

I don’t know why skaters are so freakishly skinny, but I’m guessing it has more to do with diet than anything else. Its a lot easier to cut 1000 calories out of your daily 2500 calorie diet than work off an extra 1000 calories. Being outside all the time, they don’t have easy access to food like someone lounging around at home would.

I want Boise to play florida

So boise can get killed by a real team

by somepnoy9189 on Dec 6, 2009 4:42 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, Boise isn't as explosive as they were a few years ago when they went against Oklahoma.

This is why I don’t want to see Boise State go against TCU. The BCS pockets money and the MWC doesn’t get the opportunity to win a NC for a third time.

by Wilder. on Dec 6, 2009 4:45 PM PST up reply actions

Why not?

There are 3+ weeks between the end of the season and the BCS games.

I say you have a 4-team playoff (2 games the week following the final rankings). Each of the teams are guaranteed a spot in a BCS bowl, but the two winners go on to battle for the NC.

This year you have Alabama vs. Cincy and Texas vs. TCU. The winners of those games go on to the NC and the losers play in their respective BCS games.

You might even just pit No. 2 and No. 3 against each other (1 game playoff) to battle for a spot against No. 1 in the NC game. The winner of Texas vs. TCU goes on to play Alabama.

by Wilder. on Dec 6, 2009 5:02 PM PST up reply actions

I would rather Have the Bowls

make the 1-2 play each other 3-4 5-6 7-8 and so on

by somepnoy9189 on Dec 6, 2009 5:13 PM PST up reply actions

You still have the bowls in my scenario.

And it’s determining the No. 2 team generally that causes such a problem. This year you have three teams who have a case to be No. 2 (four teams if you include Boise State, but their schedule wasn’t much this year).

by Wilder. on Dec 6, 2009 5:18 PM PST up reply actions

Oregon wasn't a real team.

You’re right. But Florida is. They showed it against Charleston Southern, Troy, and Florida International.

Bird Law in this country isn't governed by reason.

by whiskey chainsaw on Dec 6, 2009 5:17 PM PST up reply actions

They played a rusty oregon team that was breaking in new starters new head coach

and all that
I am a duck but dont take that loss seriously because if they were to play that game 10 times oregon would win atleast 7/10 times

by somepnoy9189 on Dec 6, 2009 5:18 PM PST up reply actions

My point is that they did what they could with the schedule they could.

Florida played 3 teams that don’t even belong in division 1, and they get a free pass for it, despite having an easy SEC schedule year after year.

The SEC needs to eliminate the conference championship game (and about 4 schools). Their best teams should play each other during the regular season like the only real conference left, the Pac 10 does. Or they can avoid each other and face the debate hounds just like TCU, Boise State and everyone else.

The one saving grace I give to Texas/Oklahoma is they do actually play each other.

Bird Law in this country isn't governed by reason.

by whiskey chainsaw on Dec 6, 2009 5:24 PM PST up reply actions

I agree Sec schedule's are a joke. But so is the Big 12

Texas played Utep and loisiana-Monroe.
Oregon easily has the top 5 SOS they play real teams week in and week out just like the rest of the pac 10 Other then the big 3 in the SEC (Bama LSU and Florida) they have noone else that are worthy of being in the top 25.
Everyone thinks that the Pac-10 is doing it wrong and should do what the other conferences with the Conference Championship.
Pac-10 is the Best conference in College football right now.

by somepnoy9189 on Dec 6, 2009 5:33 PM PST up reply actions

Pac-10 is the best conference from a schedule standpoint.

Every team within the conference plays each other.

The SEC is the strongest conference from a talent standpoint. But they split the conference in half and don’t have to play everyone (thus increasing the odds one of the teams remains undefeated and plays for a NC every season).

by Wilder. on Dec 6, 2009 6:33 PM PST up reply actions

Not to mention the fact that there are about 3-5 really crappy teams

in the SEC year after year.

The SEC WAS the strongest conference, but no longer, now that Arizona has Stoops, Cal has Tedford, UW and UCLA are rebuilding, OSU has learned to sustain excellence and Oregon has Nike money. Nope, the Pac10 is and will continue to be the best conference in football, even if the mainstream media doesn’t realize it.

Bird Law in this country isn't governed by reason.
