Justin Forsett

Hello everyone, I am posting about a terrific young player by the name of Justin Forsett that I wanted to gain some information on.  Did he not get many touches last week because of his slight injury or is Julius Jones seriously considered the starting running back?  I think its a shame that Seahawks Managemet would hault the development of a young player like Justin Forsett because he has really shown some great promise even when he's simply a spell Running Back.  If anyone has any information or predictions on the Jones/Forsett dilemma for the next week against the Texans it would be greatly apprecaited.  Hope all is well, thanks.

Forsett injured his quad and wasn't supposed to play last Sunday

Him and Jones will likely see an equal amount of carries when they’re both healthy.

His playing in the game was never in question,

at least that I ever read.

I'm gonna go calm submissive on your ass.

He was listed as questionable on the injury report

I remembered him being not expected to play but you’re right, that wasn’t the case. Either way he was injured.

by Nate Dogg on Dec 9, 2009 10:02 PM PST up reply actions

Correct.

He was listed as questionable after tweaking his quad in practice last Friday.

by BrianL on Dec 10, 2009 7:35 AM PST up reply actions

Not starting doesn't mean Seattle has "halted his development"

He had a tweaked quad and on a few occasions during the 9ers game, he motioned to the sideline that he had to go off the field. It’s obvious his quad was not 100%.

Jones has not shown much talent, even with the starting o-line healthy and somewhat gelled. It’s unlikely Jones will continue to start if Forsett continues to shine.

Horse Pucky

Forsett didn’t look bothered by the quad at all. I rewatched the game since and I haven’t seen any time where Forsett motioned to the sideline to come off the field because he was limping or his quad was hurting. I didn’t see him wince or even limp at all.

This is exactly why I don’t like Mora and Knapp, they don’t go with the hot hand. They have too much loyalty to Jones, for some ungodly reason, Jones is half the Running Back Forsett is.

Besides that...

If John Morgan, A sports blog writer, can diesect Knapps plays then what do you think Defensive Coordinators around the league are going to do?

I think the new GM needs to clean house and start fresh. Rebuild the correct way.

John's not the only one.

While watching the game with my dad, I was calling out the next play before Seattle broke the huddle. I may not know the X’s and O’s like John, but the play-calling on Sunday was rather pedestrian and predictable at times (and has been most of the season).

I agree.

That is a major part of our crappy season.

Maybe they recognize that the "hot hand" doesn't mean anything about talent or ability,

but rather reflects on the opponent faced in a given week as well as some luck.

Julius Jones is downright awful though

Forsett played great when he was out, why would they let Jones get more touches? The reason the Seahawks even have Jones is because no body wants them on their team because he is the most average 3.0ypc back in the league. Hes just not good. Forsett is good.

by DRoyce on Dec 9, 2009 10:36 AM PST reply actions

Because they're trying to isolate the reason for Forsett's success

Was Forsett successful because he’s simply more skilled than Julius Jones, or was he effective because our offensive line was healthy, intact and executing well?

There’s no way to know unless the different variables are tested and meaningful results are gained.

Jones rushed for an average of 3.3 ypc against a top 5 rushing defense (49ers). And that average is pretty legitimate: there were no outlying runs that pumped up his average; his longest gain was 11 yards.

I wouldn’t be shocked if the Seattle coaching staff considered Jones’ performance as a success. A few of his negative runs were actually caused by the line failing a block and thus causing Jones to re-direct.

I’m honestly not a huge Jones fan. He is a very underwhelming back that rarely, if ever, breaks big plays. He doesn’t break tackles well and he’s slow to hit the hole. His one saving grace is a pretty good 3rd gear. I do agree with you that they should let Forsett ‘start’ for the remainder of the year and truly understand if he’s the future of our running game or not. Jones has pretty plainly shown us that he’s not.

I'm not quite sold on Justin Forsett

he can definitely contribute, and I like him a lot. I want to believe that his two starts could be consistently repeatable. But I’m still uncertain. The Cardinals are a good run defense but they had a big lapse earlier, as well. Gameplanning, they may have just overlooked it.

But one thing I’m certain of is I’m done with Julius Jones. He is just not the guy. He’s not good enough unless everything is optimal, and others like Forsett would probably be able to capitalize more when everything is optimal. He’s just not good enough.

If he is hurt and we aren't going to the playoffs

Why not see what JJ has left? So they can make a decision in the off season.

Lets not run down Forsett with a bunch of inside draws when he isn’t a 100% and isn’t a big back to begin with.

I suspect they'll play Force the same way they did vs. the 49ers if he's still hurt

very limited snaps.

I think the one advantage Forsett has over Jones is:

Vision. How many times do we read “the hole opened up to Jones’ left but he instead ran straight into the pile, etc?” Force doesn’t have the physical tools to hold up as an every-down runner. At best, he’s a change of pace back playing less than half the snaps – more likely 1/3. As exciting as he is, there is no way he holds up for more than a handful of games carrying the load. We need to draft a feature back in 2010.

by Misfit74 on Dec 9, 2009 4:38 PM PST reply actions

Not to be the caboose on the Forsett love train

but he has four fumbles in 104 touches. Most seventh round picks would be happy to have a job after that many fumbles. Force has some exciting abilities and is an absolute bargain for his draft price, but accounting for total football ability, most rational coaches would start Jones over Forsett.

by John Morgan on Dec 9, 2009 6:26 PM PST reply actions

Are fumble-prone RBs typically fumble prone for their whole career?

Or is it something that can be fixed/coached?

Peterson fumbles at an alarming rate.

He is good enough to stay off the bench in spite of it. That’s rare. Regardless, I don’t think Force is not the starter due to fumbling issues. Jones deserves his shot and shouldn’t lose his job due to injury, especially to a player that is not the every-down back that Jones is. Now, that being said, Forsett has outplayed Jones at times (as we all know). I have to think Force will be used more in games or at times that Jones struggles or, to provide a spark. Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t they alternate series or quarters vs. SF?

by Misfit74 on Dec 9, 2009 9:24 PM PST up reply actions

4 out of 104 touches.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but arn’t fumbles one of those stats that’s incredibly hard to gauge because it’s always subject to small sample sizes? It doesn’t take much to go from an alarming rate of fumbling to being called a “sure handed RB”. Because of the small numbers involved, a little luck could easily have swayed these numbers for Forsett. Just saying, it’s hard to make any kind of definitive statement on someone like Forsett’s tendency to fumble the ball this early in his career.

by Fear on Dec 10, 2009 5:14 PM PST up reply actions

You certainly are correct about the volatility of the metric...

A few bad breaks can sway the stat considerably; however, in a game where a team normally has just 8-12 possessions anyway, a single fumble could reduce a teams number of offensive possessions by as much as 10, 12, 15%.

This variance is critical in determining wins and losses (I’d like to see some sort of stat that measures how turnover ratio affects winning percentage).
