Two Combine Notes

Of the top four teams in the draft order, only the Seahawks have talked to Baylor OT Jason Smith at this point. And wherever he goes, the reporters in that city will have a field day. Kid is hilarious. I'll post some quotes tonight.

Also, reports indicate that Leroy Hill will be tagged. Just heard it on the media floor from Adam Caplan of Sirius NFL Radio.

Oh, and I also discovered that if you ask Sean Payton reasonably intellligent X-and-O questions, he will give you chapter-and-verse answers. Very cool.

I've seen a few reports stating that Jason Smith is a similar player to Ryan Clady.

Seeing what Clady did in Denver’s zone blocking scheme as a rookie, wouldn’t he be a great fit?

I haven't seen enough of Smith to know...

but he’s a converted tight end, and Clady’s more a guy with zone speed but the ability to physically just beat the crap out of the guy he’s blocking. Very special combination of strength and short-area speed. I’d have to see a lot more of him before I’d be comfortable comparing any young tackle to Clady.

Man, oh man.

Why?

Eh, I'm not too torn up about it.

I don’t think it makes sense to franchise anyone else and this buys Seattle time to work out a long-term deal that can take advantage of the potentially uncapped 2010 season.

True, I suppose.

I just hate seeing so much cap room taken that we could use for FA’s

I think there's still about $7.5 million left in cap space.

I kind of expect that this will play out like it did with Marcus last year. Franchise him as a safety net, then work out a long-term contract to free up some cap room.

by BrianL on Feb 19, 2009 11:09 AM PST up reply actions

you're right.

and that is how most teams are playing it, if they haven’t gotten a long-term deal done by now.

Quote from Ruskell
“Our reasoning is we’ve been negotiating and that’s gone well,” Ruskell said. “We’re not done. I wouldn’t even say we’re even exactly close, but it has been good-faith negotiating and this allows us to keep doing that while protecting our rights to the player.”

I suppose this also shows that the whole arrest in Atlanta wasn’t as big of a deal to Ruskell as many thought it would be.

by BrianL on Feb 19, 2009 11:24 AM PST up reply actions

Only 7.5?

Dos that mean if we don’t cut anyone, we can’t really sign anyone because the draft will probably take up that much, right?

Here's what ATC has to say. Good luck making sense of it.
How does the NFL Draft impact the Salary Cap?

Answer: Team salary includes the Rookie Minimum Active Salary as of the day of the draft for all drafted rookies. The salary for drafted rookies will stay at this amount until the player is signed, the team’s rights are relinquished through waivers, or until the Tuesday following the tenth week of the regular season if the player remains unsigned.

I’m reading this as “A drafted player’s value against the cap will be the RMAS until they are signed to a contract. At that point, normal salary rules apply.”

I could be wrong, though. The salary cap is a pain to try and figure out.

Remember...

Now Hill’s options are
1) Play out his franchise tag season and hope to stay healthy and get paid a lot again next year.
2) Sign a long term deal for a lot more guaranteed money.

The franchise tag gives all the leverage to the Seahawks in negotiating with Hill.

Which means little because no one is going to give us a bounty for him

I hope we get a long term deal out of him, because he certainly isn’t worth 8 mil a year.

I don't think he's 8 mil good.

But maybe he’ll get back to 2005 form with better coaching.

yes, I'll backpedal and agree that 8mil might be a bit steep.

but if we use him more as a pass-rusher, those sacks could prove valuable.

No kidding

Kerney back, Peterson in form, and Hill as a pass-rusher … oh man, sack heaven.

Here's an article from Hogs Have on

Wonderlic Scores

Funny how Favre had a ‘high score’ with a 22, whereas Tavaris Jackson has a ‘low score’ with 19.

Asomugha just got 43.5 million

It’s only slightly more than Kelvin Haden’s deal (43mil) but get this: two less years. I think Namdi is a good investment.

by Misfit74 on Feb 19, 2009 11:53 AM PST reply actions

I didn't realize Hayden had a 5 year 43MM deal.

But 3 years 43.5 for Nnamdi seems excessive. That’s almost $15 million per year. Might as well just franchise him 3 years in a row. I know JM said that the economy won’t affect football as much as baseball, but I think doling out big money this early might prove to be foolhardy. Better to take a wait and see approach rather than do something stupid like sign Raul Ibanez to a 3 year 30 million dollar deal only to see a comparable player get 1 year 6 million.

by LantermanC on Feb 19, 2009 12:16 PM PST up reply actions

What I'd like to know is where the hell he gets that much money?

They’ve been shelling out huge contracts for many seasons to seemingly everyone, and add in the fact they’re picking in the top 10 every season without fail and you’ve got me stumped.

When you find that out

You’ll also find out how, despite the mountains of cash and fistfuls of top ten picks, the Raiders are still abysmal

We won't draft him,

but can you give me any news on James Casey as the week goes on?
6’4" 235 24 year old sophomore TE from Rice (minor league ball is the reason for the age.)
If it weren’t for his college, he’d be a Ruskell guy. Hard worker, 3.84 GPA and a triple major by taking an extra class every semester. 1300 yards 13 tds last season, so he production going for him as well.
Any of info on the safeties like Chung, Moore, Hamlin, etc. would be awesome as well.
