Sounds like Philly is out of the Houshmandzadeh sweepstakes.

The Redskins are only 20 million away from dropping 200 million in one day.
Can they do it? I think Ray Willis is hoping they will.

Not his contract.
But the fact that despite being one of the bottom 5 teams under the cap, they managed to pick up the most expensive player in Haynesworth, resign the most overrated one in Hall, and picked up a decent player for a sizable chunk. What the hell, why can’t we do that?

and they're looking for a first or second round pick?
get real.
loved him coming out of louisville, and think the Raiders got a steal to grab him in the 4th, but if we had our choice between him and Alex Mack (our hypothetical second round pick) or him and William Moore/Hamlin (hypothetical third round pick) i would take the draft picks any time.
i DO like his cap number, and al davis is crazy enough to do something stupid.

I think he's a good young talent and worth a 3rd, but that feels kind of steep.
He could be a monster at RB w/ a full-time gig.

i agree that he's good
but with jones/duckett/forsett on the roster i just don’t see him having that much value for us. i would rather take that 3rd and get a safety to challenge russell, an interior lineman who can push Sims and Wrotto, etc

Apparently the Browns don’t think he’s starting QB material, so he may be worth a look. Big school, productive, not a distraction, seems like he could be a Ruskel guy. (Feel free to ridicule me if I’m wrong, I mostly know what I read from the guy’s wikipedia page).

by Fearless Frog on Feb 28, 2009 10:18 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I doubt that.
If he’s dropping passes, he’s costing himself money from everything from future contract extensions to performance bonuses to endorsements. I don’t remember him having any problems with dropping balls when he was at Michigan though.
by SeaTownBlueDevil on Mar 1, 2009 9:46 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Dropped passes are both the receiver's fault and the quarterback's fault
Edwards has had Derek Anderson and Charlie Frye throw him passes. I would bet money that a studied review of his tape points to many of those passes being late, behind him, wobbly or unnecessarily gunned in or thrown into coverage.
by John Morgan on Mar 1, 2009 10:06 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
On the contrary, I saw a fair amount of the Browns this season..
…and Derek Anderson really gets an undeservedly terrible rep. He was throwing fine passes right into the hands of ‘Butterfinger’ Braylon, who would proceed to Keary Colbert them away.
"Part, fools!
Put up your swords. You know not what you do."
by Fearless Frog on Mar 1, 2009 10:45 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
You are not going to convince me Anderson is anything but a horribly inaccurate passer.
Anderson’s college completion percentage was 50.7%.
Edwards reportedly dropped ten passes in Cleveland’s first six games. If we assume that every single one of those drops was entirely Edwards’ fault and credit Anderson for the reception, Anderson’s completion percentage spikes from 49.2% to 54.6%. So from awful to awful but less awful. Edwards certainly dropped some good passes, but I’d wager he also dropped some real crap and if you subtract those crap throws he’s not much worse than average.
by John Morgan on Mar 1, 2009 11:22 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Oh, yes I am!
Actually, I don’t care about Anderson. I’m just saying that I’ve personally witnessed Edwards drop balls thrown right into his hands in stride….sort of like Vernon Davis.

T.J. Housmandzadeh will visit the Vikings Saturday.
Housh may not quite be finding the contract offers he expected out of the gate, but there is still plenty of interest. Seattle was unable to close a deal after Houshmandzadeh visited them Friday. At the moment looks like it could come down to Seattle, Minnesota, or a return to Cincinnati. -Rotoworld

Or greater potential to destroy an already broken franchise.
I don’t think the Lions want to stick Stafford in the fire. He would be their presumed week one starter, or at least start this season, and for an absolutely horrible team, with an offensive line so bad he may never recover. I think Detroit takes the safest pick. I think they take Curry.
by John Morgan on Feb 28, 2009 12:37 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Huh, really?
Though there isn’t any clear cut #1 OT prospect, a #1 overall for a linebacker? Curry may be really good, but I doubt he’s Lawrence Taylor (who also wasn’t a #1 pick), and the last time a possible top 5 LB was hyped as ‘the safest prospect’, Green Bay ended up with AJ Hawk, who’s been mostly underwhelming.
"Part, fools!

by Fearless Frog on Feb 28, 2009 1:17 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I like Hawk
but I agree that a linebacker isn’t typically a franchise player. The Lions need almost everything and it’s not going to come in one draft. I think with the extreme price tag of a first overall pick, a huge premium is placed on “safety”. No pick is a sure thing, but Curry is about as close as prospects come.

I think overrated is the most meaningless adjective in sports
I really don’t know what you mean when you say Romo is overrated. He’s treated exactly as you would expect a quarterback with his stats to be treated. He threw for 36 TDs and 4,200 yards in 2007.
by John Morgan on Feb 28, 2009 12:41 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think it's really that complicated...
He’s saying Romo’s “overrated” by his stats, i.e. he’s not as good as his stats indicate. It’s a situation that’s usually a result of having a ton of talent around him.
See: Warner, Kurt.
by djafrot on Feb 28, 2009 1:31 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
That doesn't make sense.
What good quarterback doesn’t have top talent around him? How can we separate the performance of the quarterback from the performance of his surrounding talent? Does that mean that as soon as a quarterback has a good season, and therefore the receivers around him have a good season, that the quarterback becomes overrated?

Hasselbeck's 2007?

Hasselbeck kicked so much ass in 07.
Hopefully he’ll return to his Pro Bowl form this year.
by SoCalHawksFan on Feb 28, 2009 1:57 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
That was a fine season and confirmation that Hasselbeck is awesome
Though it’s really deceptive to call Bobby Engram a “slot receiver”. Engram is the best slot receiver in football and played much of the season at flanker.
It’s also very uncommon. We can’t exactly hold every quarterback to that standard. Negating a quarterback’s value because his surrounding talent is also excellent eliminates Peyton Manning and Joe Montana among others.
by John Morgan on Feb 28, 2009 2:06 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
While you are absolutely correct about Engram being very good...
We could still make the case that the team’s leading receiver by a large margin was a 36 year old receiver no larger than 5’10".
Romo’s laughable pocket presence makes him look like a jittery rabbit even when there is little pass rush. He doesn’t have a particularly strong arm, doesn’t make good decisions, inaccurate (and by this I mean having that touch to place balls where only the receiver can get them; how many times have we seen him overthrow a wide open T.O. or Witten?). This is excluding his off-field life with the Cabo vacation and all that jazz.
He isn’t particularly talented and was slated to have been cut if it weren’t for Quincy Carter morphing into a repeated substance-abuser and winning a starting gig in a perfect situation after looking slightly better than a mummified Drew Bledsoe way beyond his career’s twilight.

That's a perfectly fine argument
I’m not really interested in getting into this, because I don’t care about Romo, but the point is saying someone is “overrated” in isolation is meaningless.

What doesn't make sense?
Why is it so hard to look at grey areas? Some QB’s have better talent around them than others, or perhaps they play in a system that helps their numbers.
Romo is not as good as his stats indicate – this is a statement that I think many NFL people would agree with. And that’s all I’m really trying to say.
by djafrot on Feb 28, 2009 2:05 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
My problem is
How do we prove or disprove this statement:
Romo is not as good as his stats indicate
It’s one thing if you can substantiate that with something, but it’s another thing to just say he’s overrated. How, specifically, is Romo overrated?
by John Morgan on Feb 28, 2009 2:10 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
You're not properly compensating for the intagibles John!
Add 6 picks to his yearly numbers for the rest of his career for each freak fumbled snap. Subtract 1,000 yards off his yearly numbers for each loss in the play offs to the eventual superbowl champs. And take 4 TD’s off for every year his overhyped team misses the playoffs.
Of course this is all moot should he (he and he alone!) eventually win a super bowl, at which point he will become known as “one of the all time greats”.

You hit the nail on the head. I don’t have anything against Romo. I don’t think he’s overrated, just overhyped. My problem is the team he plays for and the insane amount of media coverage they get. If Romo played in any other market, IMO he be seen similar to someone like Cutler – very good, but still some flaws to overcome. Ironically, he’d probably be more popular, with the whole “UDFA makes good” story going for him.
But because he plays for the Cowboys, you have the press anointing him Brett Favre Jr. after his forst 300 yds game, and squawkers like peter King sharing text messages and raving about his smile 24/7. It’s like a decent song that gets overplayed on the radio. You may have liked it at first, but after the 10,000th listen you hate it and start mocking it.
by jteckmann on Feb 28, 2009 11:19 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I guess that's where the issue is.
I’m not trying to prove or disprove anything. My comment about Romo is derived from watching Romo consistently choke under pressure, take bad sacks when he’s had all day to throw, and miss wide-open, very large receivers.
Sometimes I think this board is a little too obsessed with “proof”, when the reality is that football – like a lot of things – is really, really complicated. I love the football, and I love the Seahawks, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to spend all day crunching numbers to try and “prove” something when my gut tells me the answer already. It doesn’t work all the time, obviously, and that’s a big reason why we come to places like this.
Crunching numbers is best left to people who are good at it, like you, John, and a few other guys here. That’s why we like this place.

A lot of people come to John's site
because we think it’s important to be able to prove what you say, and John tries to do that. There are a lot of places you can go for conjecture and Joe Blow’s gut feelings.
I think what you’re confusing with Romo is the difference between liking a player and a player being good. I don’t like Peyton Manning but I’d be retarded to think the guy’s not one of the greatest to ever play. You don’t like Romo, and thats fine, but you can’t deny his talent or dismiss his achievements because he doesn’t seem as clutch as Garrard or whoever it is you do happen to like.
by Nate Dogg on Feb 28, 2009 2:31 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I can see
djafrot’s thinking and there are things to shed light on some of Romo’s struggles, such as his December splits, which I don’t care to get into since this is not my argument. However, I would feel confident in saying Romo is ‘over-Hyped’. To the point it makes me sick sometimes. I wonder, though, if I would feel the same way if it were Hasselbeck getting the same national attention. The Eastcoast Sports Promotional Network often has that effect. (See: Favre)
by Misfit74 on Feb 28, 2009 2:36 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Two things:
One:
I don’t “dislike” Romo at all, I think he’s an affable guy and good for the league in general. I just don’t think he’s nearly the QB that a) his numbers and b) the NFL promo machine say he is, and I base that from actually watching him play over the years.
Two:
I guess there’s no point in me posting here, then, because I rarely have any “proof” of what I say. In fact, very few posters on this board should be posting here, either, because I don’t see a hell of a lot of “proof” with each single assertion being made.
by djafrot on Feb 28, 2009 5:10 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
It's not necessarily about proof
It’s about making an argument and supporting it. If you don’t want to, then you have accept you might be called on it.
by John Morgan on Feb 28, 2009 7:28 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
If I don't ask for evidence
then every discussion devolves into irrational bickering. A gut feeling is just not a credible argument. There’s someone out there that’s gut feeling is Romo is on the precipice of greatness.

Tom Brady is overrated, Peyton Manning is overrated, Steve Young and Joe Montana were overrated, etc…
by vanrijn on Mar 1, 2009 9:42 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Actually you can say Tom Brady is underrated.
With exception of 2007, who did Brady throw to? Troy Brown? Deion Branch was the best of the bunch pre-Randy Moss and Wes Welker
by Built2Spill on Mar 1, 2009 10:08 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Yes
but his pre-2007 stats are not that great. He threw a ton, so the yards are there, but his adjusted net yards per attempt were always just above average. And you can always throw the “systems quarterback” brick at Brady.
by John Morgan on Mar 1, 2009 10:18 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Who can't you throw that brick at?
You can’t be successful in the NFL today without at least a good scheme, regardless of who your QB is.
by Nate Dogg on Mar 1, 2009 11:16 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed
and that’s the futility of “surrounding talent” and “systems quarterback” arguments. Almost every good quarterback plays with good talent and in a good system.

People always look at my like I'm crazy when I say that Hasselbeck has been Brady-esque for most of his career.

JAY CUTLER on the trading block?!?!
“NFL Network’s Adam Schefter reports Jay Cutler is upset after his name was involved in convoluted trade talks involving Matt Cassel.
Before the Pats traded Cassel to the Chiefs, the Bucs, Lions, and Broncos became entwined in the talks. Tampa called Denver about a three-way deal that would have sent Cassel to the Broncos and Cutler to the Bucs. The Lions also knocked on Denver’s door about Cutler with Cassel as potential bait, but the Broncos turned down both offers after "entertaining the notion.” Schefter was clear that the Broncos only fielded calls and did not instigate talks."

If theres anything to this at all
I’m sure it had something to do with teams thinking they might be able to fleece the Bronco’s because of McDaniels relationship with Cassel. More likely a bored reporter thought the link made for good rumor, and the idea that the Bronco’s entertained any such notion of trading Cutler is almost certainly 100% untrue.

but as things stand now, we have $2.5 million in available FA cap space left. We stood at $7.5 million after franchising Leroy Hill and lost $5 million by signing Cole.
So if we want TJ Houshmandzadeh, it is likely we will either have to get a long-term deal done with Leroy Hill that backloads the contract or gambles on a potentially uncapped 2010 season…or Seattle needs to get out from under one of the big contracts already on the roster, IE Walter Jones.

TJ Sighting
Updating a previous item, T.J. Houshmandzadeh left Minnesota last night and flew home to Los Angeles.
There goes the Vikes’ momentum. Letting Housh get out of town without a contract likely means they are no longer the front-runner to get him signed. The Bengals, Vikes, and Seahawks are the three teams in the derby right now -Rotoworld and Minneapolis Star Tribune

Wow, big mess in Denver if all that talk about trying to trade Cutler is true.
Maybe we can snag him with our 2nd rounder, since that’s basically what the Chiefs paid for Cassel, no?
Even our 1st rounder, maybe plus the Broncos’ 2nd? That would allow the Broncos to pick up a QB, though what with all the veterans they’re signing that might not make sense.
Oops, sorry, fantasy GM’ing.

McDaniels might like Cassel more and wants to install his new regime?
Anyway, we will never get Cutler even if this is true. He seems to be a bit of an egotistical person, he’d never accept sitting until Hasselbeck is done, and I suppose with good reason. He’s young, learning, and improving by the season. I think he made the Pro Bowl this season too.

Just throwing it out there, mostly for fun.
We need a QB, we have a high pick, and if this stuff out of Denver is true, Denver could very well need to move Cutler to stave off a lingering controversy.
I’m not saying it’s gonna happen, or even that there’s that much of a chance… but it just makes sense for both sides at this point. At #4 the Broncos could perhaps get Stafford or certainly get Sanchez.
by djafrot on Mar 2, 2009 2:21 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Wow, Cutler is such a scheming little douche.
According to SI’s Peter King, Jay Cutler had asked the Broncos to trade him after the team lost offensive coordinator Jim Bates to USC after the season.
Cutler wasn’t happy about losing Bates or head coach Mike Shanahan, and he’s not handling the recent trade talks well at all. It doesn’t look like the Broncos are going to trade Cutler at this point, so, as King suggested, “maybe both sides need to get into marriage counseling.”

I wish we had enough corner depth to cut even an aging vet like Springs.
I’m also curious about their young wideouts in Kelly and Devin Thomas. Kelly’s knees look like he could be a bust, but Thomas has some things going for him. Another year in the system and Campbell could make strides. This should be a defining year for him.

More on Weaver:
Weaver cancels visit to New Orleans Monday 3/2, 10:56 PM CT
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that fullback Leonard Weaver canceled his visit with the Saints on Monday. There is still a good chance that he re-signs with the Seahawks.
Our View: Weaver is among the better fullbacks available, although he is not your classic lead blocker. He has good hands and is a reliable short yardage running back. He registered 50 touches last season in 14 games.
Weaver has yet to make any trips and some league observers feel he could eventually end up re-signing with the Seahawks.

If I don’t think the Buffalo Bills scare the Patriots or probably the Dolphins and to a lesser degree even the Jets. Last year was supposed to be their “break out” year. What a laugh. No one’s really gonna take them seriously. All they can do at this point is go up (pride-wise, not win-wise, they can definitely get worse win-wise). It would not at all surprise me to see Buffalo “break out” this year.
