Seahawks Land Houshmandzadeh
According to John Clayton:
In what turned out to be a tougher decision than expected, wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh chose the Seattle Seahawks over the Minnesota Vikings and the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday afternoon, according to multiple sources. ...
He weighed offers from three teams along with their quarterbacks and their teams' chances of winning.
The final decision was Seattle.
And there was rejoicing throughout the land! Other than... Minnesota and Ohio.
Wow. I assume "we" overpaid, but as long as the dude doesn't get injuried, drop balls, get in fights or get a DWI, he'll probably be worth it.
Suck it, Vikings.
Update: 5 yr, $40m ($15m guaranteed).

Probably yes
But I think we have a ton of options at #4 now, where as before there might have been pressure to pick crabtree cause we needed a WR so badly.
I'm fine with the price.
Now just tell me that the Cole signing was just a joke, and this offseason will be a success.
At only $5m guaranteed I'm willing to see how that move plays out.
But it does look suspect at first glance.
That would be awesome.

Am I right
to say that O-Line and D-Line are our priorities for the draft, with the secondary not far behind?
If one of the three best RBs in this draft are available with our 2nd rounder
I would say this is definitely a strong possibility now (or if we manage to trade down, not gonna play fantasy GM though).
Good price
Makes it pretty easy to cut him after 2 years I’d imagine.
Wonder how WR shakes out now? Bye bye to Engram?
I think
we could have a very productive off season now. Probably pick up a solid OT in the first round. Add some CB depth in the second round. Then maybe pick up a Glenn Coffee or Shonne Greene in the 3rd.
As for Crabtree
Back in november I was as excited for him as anybody else was. I think his surgery knocked him out of consideration for #4. High potential reward, but also a ton of risk. Is he the next Fitzgerald or is he Mike Williams?

I don't think Mike Williams is a fair comparison
Maybe more Charles Rogers? Williams sat out for a whole year, and had always had problems with his weight.
Either way
My point remains that Ruskell probably crossed him off the list when it was revealed that he was going under the knife.

I would love
Any of those tackles, either Smith or Monroe, I trust the FO to scout well and make the right choice.
I wouldn't complain

I don't know... All the tackles seem to have 'red flags'
Smith is still learning, and played in the spread offense. Andre Smith is a fat screw up. Eugene Monroe has knee problems. Oher has questionable technique and desire? Like I said, the best case scenario would’ve been if Glen Dorsey were available in this draft.
That being said, I’ll be happy with any of the following: Stafford, Monroe, J Smooth, trade down for Sanchez, Brown, Orakpo, Raji, Oher.
I don't see why people are so down on him.
He was awesome against Penn State. He was the number 1 QB in high school. He’d have the benefit of playing a few years behind Hasselbeck.
I completely agree
He certainly doesn’t seem like the type of guy to step in right away, but under the right tutelage he has all the tools to turn into something special.
I guess its more personal
I hate USC. They are the Yankees of college football.
Why? We already have Lofa.
Would you be mad if we traded Brian Russell and a 2nd rounder for Polamalu? I think not, you’d probably be doing triple back flips.
I defiantly would be happy.

This is a signing I can get behind
I am definitely a Housh fan. The ability to be that productive while having Ryan Fitzgerald throwing you the ball bodes well for his potential depending on Hasselbeck’s health.
I would agree that this does mean that Engram is gone, but this does not necessarily mean that it knocks Crabtree out of the picture. Crabtree may have done that himself with the injury.
To those filling those offseason lists, please keep in mind John Morgan’s #1 Offseason Checklist… we could use a longterm replacement for Hasselbeck, however, that is achieved. So while we do need an OT and S, QB has to at least be on the list.

A QB
would be very nice. Thanks for the reminder.
I sure would loved to have grabbed Taylor Mays in the first round though…
Any chance we trade down?
Correct (decade)
But, I wonder if that could improve our leverage to do the nearly impossible: trade down. If teams think we’re snagging the top QB instead of WR, we could parlay that. John’s prediction of Stafford is becoming more and more realistic now, though.
Yes you're correct
22 to 4, I think I mentioned this a while ago and forgot about it. Does anyone know what was traded?
Besides Grossman?
I bet the Titans were proud of skipping Nnamdi Asomuga
to take Andre Woolfolk.
Looking through here, it’s hard not to think about the bust potential of a high pick. I bet people were all up on Charles Rogers’ jock in 03 like they are on Crabtree’s now.

Taylor Mays would be such a waste of our first round pick.

If Taylor Mays = Laron Landry
I’d be all for it.
And if Raji = Glenn Dorsey, I’d be all for that as well.
Same if any of the OTs = Joe Thomas / Jake Long.
Colossally, even.
I don’t think either will make good pros.

Maybe not a bust in the classic sense, but I get this feeling that
he’ll be one of those players who always has tantalizing potential but never realizes it, and people will always make excuses as to why.

agree
I get this “Damione Lewis” or similar vibe off of him. He won’t live up to the expectations of the team that drafts him top-10, be labeled a bust, then go to some other team, be part of a good rotation and have a decent overall career.
He’s worth a late 1st round pick, IMO but not worth going in the top of the draft. he’s way overvalued because of his position and a DT class that lacks overall star power.
Matthew and I were talking..
Can we possibly re-sign K-Rob as our #3 guy? He was solid if unspectacular last year, and a top four of TJ-Branch-Robinson-Burly is pretty damn good.
Yesterday's Pants
A blog-thingy about the Mariners and stuff.
I'm not sure if there's enough cap space left to pull that off
especially if we’re talking about giving K-Rob a short one-year deal.
I can't see K-Rob commanding much more than 1/$800K. He didn't have that good of a year.
Yesterday's Pants
A blog-thingy about the Mariners and stuff.
I think even at that price it'll be tight.
Last week we had 7.5 million available in cap space after franchising Leroy Hill. Cole was given 5 million guaranteed next season, bringing the available cap space to 2.5 million.
I have no idea how Housh’s contact is structured for next season, but I have to imagine it has taken away a good chunk of that 2.5 million in available FA cap.
We could be giving him a big bonus, which doesn't effect the cap the same way as seasonal salary
Yesterday's Pants
A blog-thingy about the Mariners and stuff.
That could work if the FO thinks it's a good idea to give K-Rob a multi-year contract.
Ask the Commish:
That’s cheating! How can you have a real salary cap if all you have to do is give a player a signing bonus to get around it?
Answer: Now we come to the tricky part. The signing bonus IS part of the player’s salary. So it counts against the cap. When determining team and player salary, the signing bonus will be prorated over the length of the contract.
For example, if a player signs a four-year deal with a $1 million signing bonus, $250,000 of that bonus will count toward team salary for each contract year ($1 million divided evenly over the four-year contract is $250,000 per year). If a team releases a player, the unamoratized bonus money (the remaining prorated bonus money) counts immediately against the cap.
I suppose if you give K-Rob a two-year contract you can use the bonus to get around the cap crunch this season.
That's not how the cap works...
The signing bonus/guarantee is prorated over the life of the contract, I believe. So Cole’s $5 mil does not all come off the top of this year’s cap….
You're right, I misread the terms of the contract.
Somewhere I thought I read he’s due 5 million next season.
#3?
That generous. Maybe #5 WR

I'd rather have one of the young guys develop as a #4
Working with veterans like Housh and Branch could do wonders for Bumpus/Kent/Obomanu
No, I'm fine with TJ.
But am going to wince every time I see Crabtree’s statline…as a Raider.

So am I
I still think we draft Crabtree though.
Housh, Crabtree, Branch, Burleson, Robinson (1-year), and then let Payne, Obamanu, Taylor and Kent fight it out for the last spot, maybe that will inspire them to play better.
Yeah, that's an awesome group of WRs
but at some point, you’d have to think that we can only have so many WRs out there at one time, and throwing money at something else would be a better use of that money.
Um, this ensures we aren't getting Crabtree.
And I wouldn’t lose sleep if we cut the last 4 you mentioned. Mike Hass and Billy McMuffin are still on the roster too.

In my mind, it pretty much cements the fact that we're not getting Robiskie
either, which I’m fine with. We can always get Engram or KoRo to come back for cheapish.
Kent can't play football.
Which is a shame considering what a specimen he is.

And now has doesn't have to be rushed
Give him a year to learn to play without the pressure of being thrown into a game like last year. He doesn’t learn in a year, then I’d drop him.
I’m still hoping he’ll turn out. You’re right, he’s a fantastic athlete.
Kent hasn't been rushed.
And I think this is pretty much his last chance. IIRC, he’s used up his PS eligibility, so we can’t stash him there anymore. He’s going to have to make the 53-man this year, and it’s hard to justify a spot for him if he’s still so far behind in his development.
I’m hoping he makes the leap … I’m hoping ANY of the young ones make the leap, I don’t have personal favorites about who, just as long as one of them pays off
Exactly how I see it.
It’s disappointing that none of our young receivers have developed into anything special.
It is disappointing, but if we have a few 6th and 7th rounders
combined with a few undrafted guys, if any of them turn out to be anything that’s great news. Hard to expect anything out of late round guys.
Special?
I’d be happy if one of them turned out to be just average. God, for someone with allegedly good hands I’m amazed at how many balls Logan Payne fumbled.

Logan Payne is 27.
The window on him developing into something is over. If he was going to suddenly “get it” it would have happened by now. He needs to be gone.
I know.
If it were up to me I would have cut him after the Buffalo game. I have no idea what he’s still doing on the roster because in my opinion, he’s hopeless. At least Kent showed something in the preseason and Taylor wasn’t terrible the second time around.

I think we should cut them all.
Kent may be a great athlete, but he’s not a football player. Payne regressed from the little promise he showed, and Taylor is hopeless.

My sentiments, exactly.
I’ve stopped getting excited about them. Maybe the TJ signing is an indication that the team is beginning to feel the same way.
I think Obomanu has promise.
But I understand the feeling that they have not developed into what we thought they would. Unfortunately, they aren’t who we thought they are….
I doubt it...
…based on Knapp’s prior history — he’s usually a two WR formation guy who likes to run a lot, so carrying that much WR talent seems unlikely. If we were running a spread offense, that would kick ass, but we’re not.
Good point
I forgot to think about our new offense. That does change things a bit.
I was looking like this after reading some of the comments on ESPN's board

Excited!
To me it does not mean we do not pick Crabtree, it just means we have more options when we pick at #4. If Crabtree is the player Ruskell and staff think is the best, then that is who they should pick, and likely would pick.
Jason Taylor got released by the Redskins
Does he have anything left in the tank? I’d take a flyer on him if we were going to cut Kerney.
Yesterday's Pants

I thought the same thing
Though my recollection was that Kearney’s deal doesn’t allow for much cap savings if he’s cut.
I'd still take flyer on him without cutting Kearny

It seems like Suggs would cost an assload whereas Taylor might be reasonably cheap if he's looking for a place to play where he might win a ring
This of course assuming he sees us as a good rebound candidate in a weak division.
Yes, I know, I was just joking.
Having Suggs, Taylor, and Kerney would be pretty awesome though. We could play the 3-4 that everyone loves so much.
Also, I think Taylor, while being fairly cheap, will still be fairly expensive. NFL contracts aren’t guaranteed, so teams can still get away with giving him a big contract, only to yank it away if he doesn’t perform.
