Eagles Nab Weaver
Per Adam Caplan of Scout.com. He'll make a base of $1.75 million, and incentives could push it up to $2.5 million. He was an odd fit here under Mora/Knapp, just as Duckett was the third wheel under Holmgren. I nicknamed him "Hydrant" at his first training camp because, well, he looked like one.
Godspeed, Mr. Weaver. Do it up right.

So long, Leonard.
My love for you as a player bordered on irrational, so I’m going to miss you a great deal. Here’s to Philly taking advantage of your strengths.
i could't agree more...
that young man has quite a bit of potential…. much better that he stays within an offensive system more honed towards his capabilities… (man he has good hands.) we were lucky that the Big Show noticed that diamond in the ruff… and, i’m pretty sure that Andy Reid (as well as the Philadelphia fan base) will be, too.
i’m going to miss having him on the team… (he’s a serious weapon) but, after Holmgren left,… this is more than likely better for both Seattle and Philadelphia…. not to mention (and most importantly) Mr. Weaver.

Friendly tip
We get a lot of comments here at FG, so it would be appreciated if you would capitalize properly and avoid using “…” to separate your thoughts and sentences. This makes comments easier to read and improves the flow of discussion.
Thanks and welcome to Field Gulls.
I feel the same way.
I loved him while he was here, but I sincerely hope Philly uses him the right way and he busts a 500/500 season or something.
One of the only players that was fun to watch last year. At least Ruskell hasn’t traded away Carlson… yet
why indeed. why wouldn’t you re-sign a fullback that runs like a half back and catches like a tight end?
Because he isn't a good run blocker
and Knapp’s offense doesn’t use a rushing and receiving fullback.
The Carlson comparison is ludicrous.
the Carlson comparison is just that I like Carlson, much like I did Engram, Weaver and Julian Peterson. Of course the Carlson comparison is ludicrous, I think he could be the next Jason Witten
Weaver’s run blocking was much improved last year, yes, still the weak part of his game but had enough talent to take a chance to see if he continues to improve as a run blocker.
Just because you like someone doesn't mean Ruskell is going to trade him.
And to even think so is borderline moronic.

Shucks and darn
I’ll miss him, but I suppose it’s better than throwing some money at him and mis-using him all season

Everyone benefits with this move.
Ultimately, it’s the best thing for Weaver, and his professional career. I’m actually really happy for him, as this could be a defining moment in his career.
So, Seattle let’s go of an extraordinarily versatile and talented back, albeit one who’s sub-par at being a human bowling ball / battering ram (which is precisely what Knapp will expect from his FB from what I understand.)
Philadelphia grabs a very dynamic back w/ excellent hands, good vision, versatility, fantastic character, and serious, serious HEART who will (in theory) fit seamlessly into their variation of the West Coast system.
Although I’ll miss him dearly, seemingly everyone wins in this situation. I only worry about replacing Weaver with a FB who will fit nicely into Knapp’s scheme. I’m guessing that Schmitt will at least fight for a starting position, but i’m thinking we’ll need someone else. (Who was the former Raider FB who was mentioned recently?)

Justin Griffith.
He’s pretty good, but I’d rather just gun for the future and start Schmitt.

Griffith has been a starter for most of his career, right?
I’d be fine with him being a backup (actually, I would be enthusiastic with excellent depth like that), but would agree to being one?

I agree, and that's a good question.
Maybe Schmitt will be the next Lorenzo Neal (who is also unsigned).
Who we also shouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole.
As much as I love Neal and hope he gets HoF recognition someday, he’s done.

He just had a major knee surgery and is getting up there in age.
I doubt he’ll turn down a contract to be a backup.
Griffith? He is only 28
But he is also unemployed, so back up sounds groovy for the unemployed non me me players.
He's not terribly old.
But I didn’t know about the knee injury. If he’ll be a backup, we should nab him soon.

I hate to see him go, but I'm glad he got a contract.
He’s a great player, and the Eagles will be glad they got him.
It's great to be a Florida Gator!
Well that sucks
you guys lost a baller with him. Westbrook’s numbers are going to shoot up this season
Time is a great teacher... unfortunately it kills all it's pupils.
is there a comp pick here?
eh? eh? something out of him?
not likely unless he hits the pro bowl
go Weaver go.
I wouldn't expect much
Comp picks are handed out the following year (whatever comp picks we get in this ‘09 draft are based off of FA from ’08) The formula compares FA’s lost vs. FA signed, plus salary and playing time with the new team are two of the biggest factors.
The ‘Hawks have signed 2 players to relatively big deals and both figure to get a lot of playing time (Housh & Cole) The FA’s we’ve lost so far have signed more modest short term deals and figure to be role players with their new teams (Weaver, Mo, Engram)
I wouldn’t expect to get much back in comp picks next year.
