Fantasy Draft

First of all, how sweet is it to have the #4 pick in the draft? Seattle is not at all a bottom 5 team. And I believe everyone is ignoring that. Ive only seen a couple articles here and there saying Seahawks will rebound next year. We are still way talented AND we get to add one of the 5 best players coming out this year? Sweet deal. Plus we've had a great start to the offseason too with our new additions. (Although I have no idea why ESPN said AZ had the best start to FA in the NFC West)...We will retake the division and fly under the radar next year.

With that said, I'm interested to see how everyone sees us drafting this year. What are everyone's first 4 picks? Could be fun.

How many compensentorys do we have again? Oh well here’s mine until I find that out:
1. Crabs – WR
2. Chung – SS
3. Kropog (I hope he’s there) – OT
4. Shonn Greene – RB
5. Jason Williams – OLB
6. Jon Cooper – C
7. Bear Pasco – TE

Actually

That was an assumption of “the bleacher report,” a complete joke of an opinion site from people that don’t really understand the game. Was there any real announcement of compensatory picks yet?

by cashless on Mar 22, 2009 8:50 AM PDT up reply actions

The report of 4 7th round picks comes from a VERY reputable source.

There’s this guy who’s been predicting compensatory picks for 10 years, and he’s been remarkably accurate.

Even Sando reported the statistic on his blog.

by redwolf75 on Mar 22, 2009 12:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Ya that's who I was quoting

The guy seems to have largely cracked the formula for compensatory picks, although no one knows who he is. He posts who gets what every year, with warnings for possible reasons why it might be different. He’s very accurate. Although, as a warning I think Colbert had a chance to mess with our picks and make us only get 3, depending on how the NFL counted him.

Yeah, I'm surprised the Lions don't draft him #1 overall just because of a name that awesome.

And Macho Harris with the #20.

Please don't tell me that's the actual name of an NCAA player right now.

Or else I will drastically change my opinion of who to draft with our first pick. o_O

Here's what I think Ruskell will end up drafting assuming no trades:

1. Mark Sanchez QB USC

I think Stafford will be gone with the first pick, so it seems to be a choice between Sanchez, Monroe, Crabtree, Jenkins, or even an Orakpo. I think the whole “if Sanchez just went back for one more year, he’s be the number one overall pick” line or reasoning is bogus, and I don’t see any real weakness in Sanchez’s game. The opportunity to draft a QB like this is fairly slim, considering we probably won’t have a top 12 (at least I hope) pick for a while. Also, with Ruskell pretty much addressing any needs we had through FA (except safety), we’re allowed to not only take the BPA, but also take the one position that is usually had through the draft, QB.

2. William Beatty OT UConn

Part of the reason I didn’t have Monroe first is because our entire offensive line was out last year, and our o-line was still decent, maybe even almost adequate. Another reason is that this draft has several great talents in the earlier part of the 2nd round. Beatty is supposedly a good fit for a zone blocking scheme. Phil Loadholt is a possibility as well if we were determined to get a O-lineman. I left out Duke just because it seems that Ruskell can find OTs in rounds 2-5 that if they don’t pan out, or even if they do, can make good guards (Locklear and Willis).

3. Michael Hamlin S Clemson

JM has gone over him fairly extensively. If we didn’t get a safety in the 2nd, I feel fairly certain we’ll get one with this pick. If somehow William Moore falls this far, then we might pick him, since he follows the great junior year, not as great senior year (due to injury in this case) mold that Ruskell seems to like.

4. Eric Wood C Louisville
37 consecutive starts at a BCS school. We need a center assuming Spencer leaves next year. Loved to get a Zach Follett here, but center is not nearly as big of a need as LB at this point.

by LantermanC on Mar 22, 2009 8:17 AM PDT reply actions

Oh, and I kind of went out of my way to pick guys in the 1 and 2 spot

that we really haven’t discussed taking yet. I’m getting a bit tired of hearing the same names over again (never though I’d be tired of mock drafting…).

by LantermanC on Mar 22, 2009 8:22 AM PDT up reply actions

Corections.

Line OF reasoning
I know Locklear isn’t a G, I just feel he could be a good one if we had a great RT besides him.

by LantermanC on Mar 22, 2009 8:36 AM PDT up reply actions

The First Pick triggers the the next two or three picks!

Here are three alternatives:

1. Stafford or Sanchez
2. OL Best OT or C on board
3. Best Safety on board
4. Best WR on Board

1. Crabtree
2. OL Best OT or C on board
3. Best WR on Board
4. Best Safety on board

1. Monroe, or J. Smith
2. Best Safety on board
3. Best Center on Board (Wood if he lasts or Antoine Caldwell should be here)
4. Best QB on Board (I like Mike Reilly)

I agree with LantermanC that the 4th overall pick is something we are probably, hopefully, not going to see again for a very long time. Thus a unique opportunity to draft a QB. With Matt’s health issues the last several years, and his age, they really need to address the QB of the future now.

by walruz on Mar 22, 2009 8:35 AM PDT reply actions

I think with Crabtree

your round 3 is probably wrong…? Or did you want 2 WRs from this draft?

So is your line of reasoning, if we get a QB, we need to get him better protection?
If we get Crabtree, we need to get the QB more time to get him the ball?
And if we get an OT, we can address our biggest weakness, safety, in the 2nd round?

I guess I’m not in touch with 4th rounders. I put Wood for my 4th, but you seem to think he might not be there in the third. I’d be ok with Shipley, I guess. This draft can’t come soon enough.

by LantermanC on Mar 22, 2009 9:11 AM PDT up reply actions

My Bad

Your right, with Crabtree 1st the 3d pick would not be another WR but best safety, and 4th pick either QB, RB, OL. Although TR says we are going with best player available they are still going to balance it against need. What are the weakest areas right now? Safety, OL, Impact offensive player, would be my take on it. Unfortunately, they have to balance the value of the pick against the player and the position. So I still think they go QB 1st, OL 2d, and Safety 3d.

Three approaches

Offensive Line Focuse

  1. = Eugene Monroe (OT)
  2. = Brian Robiskie (WR)
  3. = Michael Hamlin (SS)
  4. = Antoine Caldwell (OC)
  5. = Kory Sheets (RB)
  6. = Mike Wallace (WR)
  7. = Bear Pascoe (TE)
    C#1 = Curtis Painter (QB)
    C#2 = Victor Butler (OLB)
    C#3 = Deon Butler (WR)
    C#4 = Ryan Purvis (TE)

QB Draft

  1. = Matthew Stafford (QB)
  2. = Brian Robiskie (WR)
  3. = Andre Brown (RB)
  4. = Michael Hamlin (SS)
  5. = Tyronne Green (OG)
  6. = Anthony Hill (TE)
  7. = DeAndre Levy (OLB)
    C#1 = Donald Washington (CB)
    C#2 = Brian Toal (OLB)
    C#3 = Deon Butler (WR)
    C#4 = Dallas Reynolds (OC)

Trade Down Draft (aka pipe dream)

  1. = Trade down to #8 gaining #39 (Jacksonville) for Seattle #4 and #101
  2. = Mark Sanchez (QB)
  3. = Brian Robiskie (WR)
  4. = Evander Hood (DT)
  5. = Anoine Caldwell (OC)
  6. = Traded to Jacksonville
  7. = Kory Sheets (RB)
  8. = Kevin Ogletree (WR)
  9. = Dan Gronkowski (TE)
    C#1 = Roy Miller (DT)
    C#2 = Donald Washington (CB)
    C#3 = Ra’Shon Harris (DE)
    C#4 = Robert Brewster (OT)

It is what it is...

I love this mock.

We don’t address the safety position, but we get 4 players that I am really high on. I’m high on Stafford as well, but Stafford and a early 4th rounder is not as good as Sanchez and Ziggy Hood (or even Patrick Chung, since he would likely be available here).

by LantermanC on Mar 23, 2009 9:46 AM PDT up reply actions

I'll give this a shot (no trade-downs, obviously):

1.) Matt Stafford QB
2.) Patrick Chung SS
3.) Brian Robiskie WR
4.) Antoine Caldwell C

1.) Michael Crabtree WR
2.) Dike Robinson/Andy Levitre/Alex Mack/Max Unger G/C
3.) Michael Hamlin SS
4.) Zach Follett LB

Also wanted to express my horror that we're in the most excruciating part of the offseason.

After the major FAs have been signed and well before the draft. Almost no news at all and enough mock drafts to make anyone go mad.

Nice, I was waiting for a thread like this

Trade Down Draft

Trade #4 to Philadelphia for #21 and #28

1. Michael Oher/Andre Smith
1. Knoshown Moreno
2. Patrick Chung
3. Connor Barwin or best available OLB

Regular

1. Eugene Monroe
2. Patrick Chung

After that I really haven’t given enough thought to think what position would be best for particular players lol

I think the trade down with Philly would be an awesome idea personally. They need an OT and a WR, they could grab Crabtree, Smith or Monroe most likely. We would still be able to get good OL help at 21, and get a S, RB or OLB with our other 1st at 28, and our 2nd rounder.

Let's go.

Since you called this thread Fantasy Draft

I’ll give what I’d like to see vs. what I think will be. It’s hard because there are a number of players I really like, such as Alex Mack, that I just can’t rationalize us getting. My somewhat realistic fantasy would then be:

1. Stafford (future franchise QB with 1-2 years behind Hass to develop)
2. Robiskie (NFL ready WR, insurance against Branch and Burleson)
3. Luigs (future franchise Center, can contribute at guard or center immediately)
4. Bruton (Irish FS with stock rising, might have to trade up a few spots to get him)
5. Sheets (Boilermaker RB to split time with Jones/Forsett)
6. Taylor (fireplug DT developmental project, albeit 3 yr starter at Michigan)
7. Murtha (Huge OT developmental project, albeit 4 yr starter at Nebraska… when healthy)
Compensatory picks at end of the 7th round
7-1 Underwood (WR Rutgers, 6’1" with a 4.31 40)
7-2 Butler (OLB Oregon State, good measurables)
7-3 Boeckman (sleeper Buckeye QB, was Big 10 1st teamer in 2007)
7-4 Washington (the other CB from Ohio State, 6’ 197 lb with 45" vertical jump, but only 4.50 40. Needs work but has eye-popping physical tools.
