Open Mock Draft Thread

We're a little less than a month from the draft and, let's face it, everyone wants to make a first round mock draft. So here's the thread to do it in. The ground rules are simple: This is a place for mock drafts of any kind, but any mock draft appearing outside this thread will be deleted. I'd usually do this with a beer in my hand, but 11am is a little early even for someone who wakes at 2am.

For number 32, don't you mean PIT?

Why the hell would the Rams draft Alex Mack after they just spent big cash on Jason Brown?

He probably does mean Pitt,

but can’t Mack play both C and G, or is that just Unger?

by LantermanC on Mar 26, 2009 1:06 PM PDT up reply actions

But I could have sworn Mack is a true center.

And I thought the Rams don’t need a guard. They spend a lot of money on overpaying Jacob Bell to be LG, and apparently everyone on the team loves Richie Incognito. Roy Schuening was also drafted last season who looks promising.

Christ, mock drafts take long.

I’m only on pick 11 -_-

Doesn't help that work keeps impeding my mock draft progress.

Can’t a guy ask for some peace while at work to do a mock draft?

If the Seahawks had the #28 pick...

It would be very hard for me to pass up Duke Robinson or Alex Mack. I’m assuming that for the 28th pick, the Seahawks gave up their 2nd and a later round pick, like say, their 5th rounder?

Not that I’d be disappointed with getting Knowshon Moreno. I really believe that he’s the best running back in the draft, damned his 40-yard times.

by Carl Shinyama on Mar 26, 2009 1:38 PM PDT reply actions

WHAT ABOUT CHUNG?!?!

Trading up to get Moreno — which is an idea I love, in a vacuum — probably means giving up our 2nd rounder, and The Savior at Safety as well. I refuse to believe this, John!

by J.L. White on Mar 26, 2009 2:26 PM PDT up reply actions

I still have bad dreams about some guy named Hamlin

something about Cowboys and stop signs and badly missed tackles that lead to 90-yard TD runs. I probably need to stop eating spicy food right before bedtime.

by J.L. White on Mar 26, 2009 4:56 PM PDT up reply actions

I'd take a solid center like Mack over Chung

Our D-line and pass rush will be better this year, thus taking some pressure off our secondary thus making a 1st round pick for safety a bit of overkill.

by Nick Andron on Mar 27, 2009 7:44 AM PDT up reply actions

I probably agree with you here

Although Moreno’s a great talent, it would be disappointing to pass up O-Line help at that spot, especially if we did go QB with the first pick. Still, that big hole at safety looms large as well.

The 49ers would have the start to a heck of a defense

if they were able to add Everette Brown. They still wouldn’t be able to score, but the defense would definitely improve.

Just one?

Despite it taking me a long time, I figured there would be several mistakes.
I was considering this:
35. STL Brian Robiskie WR
But I didn’t want them to have him. But I guess that’ll have to do.

That cracks me up

That’s totally what I do in these mock drafts too. I try to keep players I like away from teams I don’t like.

Honestly though, you did a good job above. Really, we could debate the either/or’s on a couple of those, but generally speaking it fits the principles and needs of the teams themselves.

Wait, no I didn’t, I put Hakeem Nicks 2x. Put Harvin in for Heyward-Bey at 18, and drop Heyward-Bey for the First Nicks at 22.

Doing a mock draft turned out to be harder than I thought...

I’ve been paying a lot of attention to the top 10, that I neglected the middle of the first round and the early 20’s…

Anyways, here’s my shot at it. I’m just winging it . Please feel free to tear it apart or praise it, though I think it will be more of the former:

1. Detroit – Matthew Stafford

2. St. Louis – Eugene Monroe

3. Cleveland (from Kansas City)* – Aaron Curry

4. Seattle – Jason Smith

5. Kansas City (from Cleveland) – Brian Orakpo

6. Cincinnati – Michael Oher

7. Oakland – Michael Crabtree

8. Jacksonville – B.J. Raji

9. Green Bay – Aaron Maybin

10. Buffalo (from San Francisco)** – Everette Brown

11. San Francisco (from Buffalo) – Michael Jenkins

12. Denver – Rey Maualuga

13. Washington – Andre Smith

14. New Orleans – Peria Jerry

15. Philadelphia (from Houston)*** – Chris Wells

16. San Diego – Eben Britton

17. New York Jets – Mark Sanchez

18. Chicago – Vontae Davis

19. Tampa Bay – Josh Freeman

20. Detroit – William Beatty

21. Houston (from Philly) – Clay Matthews

22. Minnesota – Alex Mack

23. New England – James Laurinaitis

24. Atlanta Falcons – Brandon Pettigrew

25. Miami – Darius Butler

26. Baltimore – Jeremy Maclin

27. Indianapolis – Darius Howard-Bey

28. Philadelphia – Duke Robinson

29. New York Giants – Percy Harvin

30. Tennesse – D.J. Moore

31. Arizona – Knowshon Moreno

32. Pittsburgh – Max Unger

  • Cleveland has two 2nd round picks (#36 and #50), and I can see them wanting to trade one of those picks to move up to get Curry at #3.
  • San Francisco needs a pass rusher, but so do the Bills and I like to think they are more desperate for one, even with Aaron Schobel on their team, and with Everette Brown on the board, San Francisco would have the leverage that they’d need to get more picks. Plus, Walt Harris is OOOOOOLD, and they could use Michael Jenkins across from Nate Clements, and there are good OLB’s/DE’s to be had later, and they could recoup their 4th round pick.
  • I think of all of the 32 teams, Houston is the team that will want to trade down the most, and Philly is probably the best candidate to do so, with two picks in the 20’s. I figure Houston won’t settle for lower than Philly’s #21 spot. However, I think Tampa Bay would love to trade up to #15 to get Mark Sanchez, but they may stand pat and wait for Josh Freeman.

P.S. New Orleans was hard. Based on how I had the draft fall, I had no effin’ clue who they’d pick. I just went with who I thought was BPA on d-line, as they need help there. Probably a huge reach, but for want of better ideas, I had none.

P.S.S. I’m probably going to catch a lot of flack for having Mark Sanchez fall all the way down to the Jets, but they don’t have Favre anymore, so I figured they might think Sanchez is worth the risk at #17. They need WR’s but there may be some good ones later.

P.S.S.S. I have the Vikings going with Alex Mack, even though they need a receiver, but Birk is 33 years old. If they’d like to keep a great line in front of Adrian Peterson, then Mack is the way to go. If they go with WR, then Caldwell may be available to them in the third, but I think Mack is the better option than any of the WR’s available. They could possibly target Jaquin Iglesias or Brandon Gibson in the 3rd if they go with Mack.

P.S.S.S.S. I put myself in a hole with Peria Jerry going to the Saints. The Colt obviously need a DT, and he’d have been the easy pick for me, but with Marvin Harrison gone, I had them taking a WR. I know I haven’t had anyone pick Percy Harvin at this point, and I considered him, but I think Heyward-Bey fits better with Peyton Manning.

P.S.S.S.S.S. The Giants were hard, too. I seriously considered giving Brian Cushing to the Giants, but with the issues with Plaxico Burress, I gave them a WR. I think they could go either way if both were available.

by Carl Shinyama on Mar 26, 2009 3:34 PM PDT reply actions

Wow, lots of similar thoughts.

I agree, for some reason NO took me forever to do.
I’m not sure about Alex Mack however, especially if Maclin is still available for Minnesota.
Everyone has Peria Jerry going to the Colts, but I felt that since DT seems to be so weak, some team might jump the gun and draft him before their pick, which is why I had Ziggy Hood going to the Colts instead.

I personally should have put Maualuga 12 to Denver. I put Cushing because I thought they had MLB taken care of for some reason, but just watching Maualuga on film, he definitely seems to be a impact player.

Lastly, I’d love to have Jason Smith go to the Hawks at 4.

by LantermanC on Mar 26, 2009 3:44 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree with two of your assumptions.

1. If Sanchez falls to the Jets, I can’t imagine them passing up on him. They have zero QB depth right now.
2. The Giants need another WR, with seeing how much the Burress issue affected their team.

I do want to say that you actually apparently lucked into the Alex Mack draft pick because they lost Matt Birk to free agency, so it is actually a big need for them, probably bigger than WR (but probably not QB, but Childress apparently hates the idea of drafting good quarterbacks).

Finally, if Stafford goes #1 (which is a likely proposition), Jason Smith would be my pick at #4.

John, LantermanC, and Carl

I find your choices for Green Bay interesting.
John, why do you see GB making a trade with Cincy? and why do you see them targeting Maybin?
LantermanC, given that GB is changing to 3-4 why do you think they would overlook Everette Brown to choose Jenkins?
Carl, why Maybin instead of Brown?

by bp42810 on Mar 26, 2009 5:35 PM PDT reply actions

I (along with possibly most of FG)

think that BOTH Everette Brown and Malcolm Jenkins are pretty special players. I think Brown has the chance to be just below a DeMarcus Ware type. He is very athletic, and as John Morgan has said, has very good body control. However, I feel like LB is an easier position to fill, so I went with the guy I feel will be the an elite CB. Sure he runs a 4.5, but when a Heyward Bey-type isn’t running for a Hail Mary Pass 2x a game, I think he will be a shutdown corner.

by LantermanC on Mar 26, 2009 7:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh, and to clarify,

when I say athletic for Brown, I don’t mean combine athletic, I mean when you see him play, you think of him as a disruptive force, a talented player, and one of the players you can’t help but just stare at and ignore all the other players. I have the same feelings for Tyrell Sutton, RB from Northwestern, and he had, by all accounts a horrible combine (4.7 40).

by LantermanC on Mar 26, 2009 7:47 PM PDT up reply actions

I watched the Alamo Bowl

And Sutton really showed.

I am certainly no expert on Sutton, but he seems similar to Justin Forsett. But his burst and vision did stand out.

I am also no expert on Moreno. But it would seem we would be better off getting somebody whose skills complement Julius Jones, rather than repeat (e.g. Cedric Pearman)

It is what it is...

by kidder95 on Mar 26, 2009 9:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Green Bay would trade up

because Maybin is “their guy”. Which is just a guess, but I think Maybin has been forgotten and that many teams see him as the head and shoulders best 3-4 blitzing outside linebacker.

by John Morgan on Mar 27, 2009 12:36 PM PDT up reply actions

I seriously considered Brown for Green Bay.

But I went with Maybin because Brown’s combine wasn’t all that great, and I think that might have scared them off. Knowing that a lot of teams place a good amount of value in combine measurables, I’m trying to see it the way Green Bay might. I do acknowledge that I could be completely wrong though, and my logic may be way off base.

Personally, in watching the highlights, I think Brown is the overall better rusher and PLAYER than Maybin, and I would choose him over Maybin any day. In fact, I would not be disappointed if the Seahawks chose him at #4, but I’d rather trade down a few spots to get him.

lol Crushed, I forgot Birk was signed by the Ravens! My bad. Hard to keep track sometimes. Guess I did get lucky there. Fortunately, I remembered that he was getting old, and I figured that getting a center to groom now would be as good a time as any, so I think I made a solid pick for them.

by Carl Shinyama on Mar 26, 2009 7:17 PM PDT reply actions

It's a solid pick for sure!

Better to be lucky than not.

I’d also agree that I would choose Brown over Maybin, at least if all I had to go on was that highlight package John Morgan posted a while back there. That’s an impressive specimen right there.

Gregg Jennings.

I don’t know, a second rounder would fit with the trade chart but I doubt you’d get that. I wouldn’t be that upset to drop down to 10, save money and still be looking at similar quality players for less than the retail value of the pick. The only player I really have to have at 4 is Crabtree and I haven’t heard anything to make me think the Hawks are all that interested.

by Nate Dogg on Mar 26, 2009 9:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Greg Jennings?

Man, while that totally would never happen, that would be awesome. However, I really like the reasoning of the Packers trade, because you look at the teams between the 4 and 9 slot and none of them would be in the market for a quarterback. I like the idea of paying a 9 slot and still getting Stafford (plus something else obviously from Green Bay) way more than getting the 4 slot and Stafford.

Oh, final point just out of curiosity…. Why again would the Packers want to trade up?

He's the most polished 3-4 rush linebacker

Maybe not quite as athletically talented as Orakpo or Brown but with a lot less question marks, or at least thats what I’ve been lead to believe. I’ve heard people are starting to get down on Orakpo (work ethic) so my thought process was Green Bay will jump up to secure the best player in this draft at that position to help with their transition to a 3-4.

I don't get the 'Jags are going QB' hype.

They shelled out a 60-million dollar deal to Garrard. I think he’s more entrenched than what’s being said.

by Misfit74 on Mar 26, 2009 9:40 PM PDT up reply actions

I concur

That is alot of bones for them to consider a QB. He lacked an O line last year and receivers with hand instead of stubs.

by Built2Spill on Mar 27, 2009 9:37 AM PDT up reply actions

Those are absolutely valid factors.

Garrard is not a weakness for Jacksonville, and I would contend that he’s a strength.

by Misfit74 on Mar 27, 2009 6:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, if I'm the GM of the Jaguars...

And Stafford is available at #8, I just might seriously consider drafting him, even with the money already tied up with Garrard, and perhaps put Garrard on the trading block. Despite my misgivings about Stafford, I would feel a lot better at picking him up at #8 overall as opposed to say, #4 overall.

I’m just unsure of the impact it would have on the Jaguars cap if they traded him. Most likely negatively, but how bad ? Whether or not it’s enough to the point where it would be prohibitive, would of course be my question.

Garrard is a good quarterback, I think, but why not get a quarterback to groom for the future? I mean, Garrard is 31 years old already, and in two years or so, Stafford could be ready to step in by then.

Personally, I think that it would be more prudent on the offensive side of the ball to make sure that their O-line doesn’t get dinged up like they did last year, and to add more talent there, but it would be very hard to pass up Stafford at #8. Better yet, if the Jaguars were a team that uses the BPA formula when it comes to drafting, at #8, who’s the BPA available?

by Carl Shinyama on Mar 26, 2009 10:09 PM PDT reply actions

With David Gerrard on the hook for $60 mil

NOBODY is going to trade for him. However, the question here is, how much of Gerrard’s contract guaranteed? It may be set up in a way that after 2 years, the Jags can cut him with little cost. In that case, drafting a QB now to sit for awhile might be smart.

However, I wouldn’t shell out 1st round money for that. Better to wait until the later rounds, but the Jags may see things differently.

by J.L. White on Mar 27, 2009 8:15 AM PDT up reply actions

My MOCKERY...

1. Detroit Lions: Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia
Any pick is possible here, but I see both OL and LB as being deep in this years draft so Detroit waits. Stafford is the smart pick here.

2. St. Louis Rams: Jason Smith, OT, Baylor
If Smith isn’t here, it’s going to be Monroe. With Orlando Pace gone, St. Louis needs to address their need at left tackle. If it’s Smith, then they land the most athletic offensive lineman in the draft.

3. Kansas City Chiefs: Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest
Curry’s just too good to pass up here and addresses a need as well. If Curry is available, he’s gone here.

4. Philadelphia Eagles (via trade with Seattle): Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech
Trade talks for Anquan Boldin break down and Philly makes a move for their playmaker here. NO worries about his foot or his speed. Crabtree is the real deal, and makes a scary duo opposite homerun threat DeSean Jackson.

5. San Francisco 49ers (via trade with Cleveland): Mark Sanchez, QB, USC
My first surprise here. The Niners fear the Jags at #8 and take Sanchez. Niners swap picks with the Browns and give up their second round pick (Cleveland needs this extra pick badly). Is Sanchez the savior of the Niners …who knows, but he is local and certainly can’t be worse than Alex Smith.

6. Cincinnati Bengals: Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia Absolute no brainer should he fall to Cinnci here. Need and value align for this pick. Most have Monroe gone before here and I believe that’s a probablility, but hey… it’s a mock draft and somebody has to go out on a limb as their WILL be some surprises.

7. Oakland Raiders Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri
Al Davis loves speed. With Crabtree gone it’s all Maclin… all day.

8. Jacksonville Jaguars: B.J. Raji, DT, Boston College
This seems like a slam dunk pick if Crabtree and Maclin are gone, or if Jacksonville cant move up to get one of them. CB is another concern for them, but at #8 Jenkins is a reach and BJ Raji is the best fit for the remaining talent.

9. Green Bay Packers: Brian Orakpo, OLB, Texas
With Orakpo still on the board he becomes the PBA. Orakpo makes the move to OLB in GB’s new 3-4 scheme. If the Pack feel Everett Brown could play a 3-4 end he might be an option, but of all the top guys in this years draft, Brown has bust written all over him.

10. Cleveland Browns: Chris "Beanie" Wells, RB, Ohio State
The second major surprise of the day here. Cleveland was "all over" him at the combine and was the most represented team on Chris’ interview list. His intangibles are too intriguing for Cleveland to pass up and comes form a program known for good NFL backs.

11. Buffalo Bills: Aaron Maybin, DE, Penn State
There are no guards worthy of #11 so pass rush becomes a focus.

12. Denver Broncos: Everette Brown, OLB, Florida State
The broncos would love for BJ Raji to be here, but Everett Brown makes an intriguing 3-4 addition and has top 10 athletic ability.

13. Washington Redskins: Michael Oher, OT, Ole Miss
Offensive tackle is one of the Redskins biggest needs and while there’s a great chance they could lean towards a beffy tackle like Alabama’s Andre Smith, but Oher seems safer.

14. New Orleans Saints: Brian Cushing, OLB, USC
OLB is the Saints biggest need and this is about where Cushing’s value begins to meet the draft order.

15. Houston Texans: Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU
Horrible draft spot for Houston as Safety and SSLB are immediate needs, but there is just nothing at #15 that makes sense in terms of value. An upgrade at DE to pair opposite Mario Williams seems the best fit, and the Texans decide not to reach for Moore.

16. San Diego Chargers: Rey Maualuga, ILB, USC
The Chargers take the BPA in Maualuga to address their need for depth at linebacker.

17. New York Jets: Vonte Davis, CB, Illinois
Rex Ryan is determined to upgrade the defense. QB is the biggest need but the Jets blow this pick on free-lancer Davis.

18. Chicago Bears: Percy Harvin, WR, Florida
With Frank Omiyale signed in FA, this pick is totally dependant on whether the Bears can grab a veteran WR like Holt before the draft. Jerry Angelo blows this pick.

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Josh Freeman, QB, Kansas State
He’s raw, but the skill are there and the Bucs desperately need to think beyond McCown at QB beyond this year.

20. Detroit Lions: Andre Smith, OT, Alabama
When your 0-16, character isn’t an issue. Detroit walks away with (2) #1 overall selections in in terms of ability with Stafford and Smith.

21. Seattle Seahawks (via Philly): Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio State
Is there a better possible spot to draft Jenkins? Ruskell LOVES big school names and production. Forget about his 40. Jenkins knows how to jam a WR and has playmaking ability.

22. Minnesota Vikings: Alex Mack, C, California
Isn’t going to make Vikings fans drool, but Birk leaving is a HUGE hole to fill. Minnesota doesn’t let him fall to Pittsburgh at #32.

23. New England Patriots: Clint Sintim, OLB, Virginia
The Pats obviously want to upgrade OLB and Sintim is the best available. Belichick will dream ways to get this at opposing QB’s.

24. Atlanta Falcons: Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State
Should be an easy pick. They wanted LJ Smith and didn’t get him. Pettigrew is a specimen.

25. Miami Dolphins: Clay Matthews, OLB, USC
Miami upgrades their defense with a smart pick here.

26. Baltimore Ravens: Alphonso Smith, CB, Wake Forest
After releasing Samari Rolle, the Ravens have a major need at cornerback and if Smith is still available, he would be an instant upgrade. He’s on the smaller side, but he’s a good athlete and has excellent athleticism and quickness.

27. Indianapolis Colts: Peria Jerry, DT, Ole Miss
A total no-brainer here. They need a run stuffer and he fits Indy’s style of defense because he’s quick and explosive.

28. Seattle Seahawks (via Philly): Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia
Moreno is the do-everything back the Brian Westbrook mold. He doesn’t have tremendous speed or power, but his balance, instincts and vision are perfect in their new zone-blocking scheme.

29. New York Giants: Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland
With Burress situation up in the air, Eli gets his deep-ball/jump-ball specialist back.

30. Tennessee Titans: Darius Butler, Connecticut
There are no glaring weaknesses here so the Titans find a replacement for Harper that they can bring along slowly.

31. Arizona Cardinals: Ron Brace, DT, Boston College
Bryan Robinson is 34 and Brace is a mountain.

32. Pittsburgh Steelers: Duke Robinson, G, Oklahoma
Pittsburgh seems they are always in a position to take BPA’s that they don’t really need at the time and develop them into something special. Duke’s the best guard in the draft.

BONUS PICK: # 37 Seattle: William Beatty OL

I think Ruskell would love to have that.

I just can’t see the Eagles that desperate to take a WR.

by aerozeppelin on Mar 26, 2009 10:45 PM PDT up reply actions

I think you have to remember....

…that a WR pick is also a Donovan McNabb pick. As of now, McNabb has said he wants to see firepower added, and Crabtree opposite Jackson would be formidable.

At any rate, it’s a fun exercise to go through, and from what I have read on the sites terms and conditions, we don’t have allot of opportunity to fantasy GM. Might as well take it when we can.

Cleveland needs the extra 2nd round pick?

They already have two 2nd round picks, the 36th overall and the 50th overall pick. To me, they could actually do without.

Love this mock draft

and it makes sense for a lot of teams, which of course means the draft will turn out TOTALLY different. Although I don’t think the Niners should trade up to get Sanchez, that is certainly something I could see happening, especially with a lot of buzz around him from other teams.

I also don’t see the Texans passing on Malcolm Jenkins if he is there at #15, considering their secondary problems. He could end up playing either corner or safety, and I say they either take him there or trade out of the pick.

Of course, that assumes all NFL teams do what seems to be the most logical.

by J.L. White on Mar 27, 2009 8:25 AM PDT up reply actions

Seattle Philly trade is what I see.

I really like this mock for Seattle and for Philly. The Seattle Philly trade is something I made a fan post about just the other day, I also had them taking Moreno with one of the 2 first round picks.

Jenkins is a good choice there too, I don’t know if he lasts that long though.

Interesting note about Jenkins, his 10 yard time was better than Jeremy Maclin, and his 20 yard was the same. It’s after the 20, where you stop accelerating quite as much that he started to fall off in terms of his 40. To me this means he can still cover most routes, by the time a receiver is running 30-40 yards plus, he may not keep up, but he’s physical enough to jam them, and you’d hope for help from a Safety after that point as well.

Anyways, love the mock, not sure about Beaty at 37, I’d rather have Unger, but after the first two picks we had, I could handle Beaty no doubt lol.

Let's go.

by J Hens on Mar 28, 2009 11:19 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm only reasonably sure of the top 4

the rest is a crapshooooooot, like all mock drafts

1. DET Matthew Stafford QB
2. STL Jason Smith OT
3. KC Aaron Curry LB
4. SEA Michael Crabtree WR

And even then I’m not sure for sure, KC could also go Eugene Monroe OT (Hell of a player, but injury is a concern) or Crabtree. I think they would take OT over WR though. Tough to take a LB this high is why I think they may go OT. If they’re confident in Monroe’s health, then they take him. See how second guessing gets? This is why I stop here, I can’t make up my mind, it becomes like trying to predict the stock market, except without any results for another month. Which is agonizing.

My Mock

1 Detroit Matthew Stafford
2 St. Louis Jason Smith
3 Kansas City Aaron Curry
4 Seattle Eugene Monroe
5 Cleveland Michael Crabtree
6 Cincinnati Michael Oher
7 Oakland B.J. Raji
8 Jacksonville Vontae Davis
9 Green Bay Brian Orakpo
10 San Francisco Jeremy Maclin
11 Buffalo Brandon Pettigrew
12 Denver Aaron Maybin
13 Washington Everette Brown
14 New Orleans Malcolm Jenkins
15 Houston Chris Wells
16 San Diego Andre Smith
17 New York Jets Mark Sanchez
18 Chicago Bears Percy Harvin
19 Tampa Bay Clay Mathews
20 Detroit Peria Jerry
21 Philadelphia LeSean McCoy
22 Minnesota Darius Heyward-Bey
23 New England Brian Cushing
24 Atlanta Rey Maualuga
25 Miami Hakeem Nicks
26 Baltimore Darius Butler
27 Indianapolis Eben Britton
28 Philadelphia Michael Johnson
29 New York Giants Louis Delmas
30 Tennessee Tyson Jackson
31 Arizona Knowshown Moreno
32 Pittsburgh Alphonso Smith

I think the Lions take Stafford not only because of the talent, but because they need someone that can exploit all of Calvin Johnson’s abilities. With Curry gone at three, the ’Hawks will take the best OL available. I personally would like to see Curry fall, although I think I am in the minority of Field Gulls readers there.

Cleveland has lost playmakers left and right this offseason, so Crabtree seems to be the best choice. It seems like everyone has Maclin going to Oakland at seven, but after McFadden and Russell, shouldn’t they at least be considering defense? Orakpo falling to nine would be a steal for Green Bay.

The Bills still need someone to run routes and catch passes over the middle, so Pettigrew is their man at 11. The Saints take Jenkins as a safety at 14. Andre Smith has had a ton of issues lately, but San Diego really, really needs offensive line help. Sanchez ends up with the Jets. The New York media will call him “Broadway Mark.” In five years he will be “Skid (row) Mark.”

I think McCoy is the best fit for the Eagles. He is the back most similar to Westbrook, meaning that if/when Westbrook goes down, the offense will remain somewhat similar. They might be able to wait until 28 to take him, though, because none of the teams 22-27 have a desparate need for an RB. New England will end up with a USC LB if one is available.

by Steve J. on Mar 27, 2009 1:05 AM PDT reply actions

I've heard that Moreno is more like Westbrook of all of the top RB's this year.

Just out of curiosity, why do you have Tampa Bay going with Matthews as opposed to a quarterback?

I like how you gave Indianapolis an OT, going BPA for an area of need when they don’t really have much of an option at some of other areas of need like DT (though I think Sen’Derrick Marks or Ziggy Hood would be an excellent option for them) or WR.

by Carl Shinyama on Mar 28, 2009 1:50 PM PDT up reply actions

btw, I still don't see how Stafford passes the lions.

The argument is that they have other needs, and that he wouldn’t be going to the best scenario due to the fact that some think he should sit.

But why couldn’t he still sit a year in Detroit? If SEATTLE would take a QB, why on earth wouldn’t Detroit want a signal caller for the future?

The OT at 20 idea sounds much better than the OB at 20 idea if I’m Detroit.

Let's go.

by J Hens on Mar 28, 2009 11:22 AM PDT reply actions

yeah, my optimism for getting Stafford is dropping by the day.

Though apparently they’re negotiating with their first pick right now, so there will be a good chance that we’ll all know who it is a while before the draft.

by djafrot on Mar 28, 2009 12:49 PM PDT up reply actions

This is the first offseason

under a completely new front office and head coach for Detroit. Stafford (and QBs in general) is a high-risk, high-reward pick. If he fails (which is at a heightened probability right now considering the terrible talent around him), the blame will fall on this front office, even thought the offense surrounding him is pathetic. A less riskier decision would be to build the team for one or two years, and then draft a QB who can play with players you actually want on your team. Going O-line would be a much safer pick for Detroit, so I’m fairly confident that they’ll be taking Jason Smith.

by SeaTownBlueDevil on Mar 28, 2009 2:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Don't forget that they are probably going to suck this year.

I don’t think anyone expects them to do particularly well. So, they could grab an OT this year and work on their line. Then next year, they should be in prime position to grab one of the several QBs coming out. And that QB will actually have a chance because their OL won’t be worthless (presumably).

by Fear on Mar 28, 2009 4:22 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't have any stats on this

But wouldn’t the learning curve for the QB be longer than for the OT?

What I’m saying is, why not take the QB first, allow him to learn and sit for a year, then nab the top tier OT next year. That way the QB has had time to sit and understand the playbook, and can come in along with a high profile linemen as well. Rather than draft the linemen now, and then draft the QB next year and have them sit again.

I mean it all depends on how they view Stafford relative to next year’s QB class. But if we can’t pass up on a QB, I truly don’t see how Detroit can either.

Let's go.

by J Hens on Mar 29, 2009 8:44 AM PDT up reply actions

If Detroit starts off next season 0-10,

they’ll be under enormous pressure to throw Stafford in there. Its unlikely it would even get that far, people would probably call for him after Week 4.

by SeaTownBlueDevil on Mar 29, 2009 5:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Ya, I think there's no way he's able to sit the whole year.

There’s a good chance he’ll be forced to start right away. Which means lots of sacks, lots of picks and errant throws, and no confidence left by the end of the season.

by Fear on Mar 29, 2009 5:54 PM PDT up reply actions

This year is so deep though...

They could easily grab Stafford (franchise potential QB)
They could very likely grab William beatty at #20 (10 year LT quality)
and then come back with 2.01 and grab an Unger type.

Thats Stafford and two extremely solid/versatile OL immediately.

by iverson2169 on Mar 29, 2009 8:44 PM PDT up reply actions

If they wanted to expend their first three high picks on offense,

then thats fine. But considering they went offense last year with OT Gosder Cherilus, I doubt they use every one of their top picks on that side of the ball, especially with how putrid their defense is.

Here's my guess on how it will go down

1 Detroit Jason Smith
2 St. Louis Eugene Monroe
3 Kansas City Aaron Curry
4 Seattle Matt Stafford (Hate this pick, but if Stafford is there, Ruskell can’t resist)
5 Cleveland Michael Orakpo
6 Cincinnati Michael Crabtree
7 Oakland Andre Smith
8 Jacksonville BJ Raji
9 Green Bay Aaron Maybin
10 San Francisco Michael Oher
11 Buffalo Brian Cushing
12 Denver Tyson Jackson
13 Washington Everette Brown
14 New Orleans Vontae Davis
15 Houston Malcolm Jenkins
16 San Diego Clay Mathews
17 New York Jets Ray Maualuga
18 Chicago Bears Mark Sanchez
19 Tampa Bay Josh Freeman
20 Detroit Michael Johnson
21 Philadelphia Eben Britton
22 Minnesota Darius Heyward-Bey
23 New England James Laurinaitis
24 Atlanta Brandon Pettigrew
25 Miami Darius Butler
26 Baltimore DJ Moore
27 Indianapolis Ziggy Hood
28 Philadelphia Knowshon Moreno
29 New York Giants William Beatty
30 Tennessee Alex Mack
31 Arizona Chris Wells
32 Pittsburgh Max Unger

by djafrot on Mar 29, 2009 11:23 AM PDT up reply actions

I knew I had one too many "michaels"

I was cutting a pasting and just glitched with Orakpo. I think like last year there will be a run on O-line, and also like last year, only a couple WR and RB in round 1. Maclin was admittedly a substitution error, where I replaced him with someone else and forgot to add him back in later. As much as I like Nicks, there are so few top-flight DB’s I think teams will lean that way in round 1. The alternatives, would be for O-line, LB’s, or DB’s dropping so the WR’s fit in round 1, and I think with deeper WR prospects they will tend to fall. Frankly, I know Philly has shown great interest in Patrick Chung, and he could go at 28, but then again, somebody has to fall. Fact is there are about 40 players routinely listed as round 1 picks, and somebody has to drop to round 2. It’s a tough call. Every year there are players sitting at Madison Square Garden waiting for their name to be called, and waiting much longer than everyone expected. The question is, who will that be. Aside from leaving Maclin off the list, my other picks that are questionable include A. Smith to Oakland and Michael Johnson to Detroit. I wouldn’t be shocked to see both of those guys fall to round 2.

2009 mocks are boring. Let's get a head start on 2010

Waiting for the 2009 draft is taking forever so I am starting to work on a mock draft for 2010. It will be based off of the 2009 draft order:

1 Denver Broncos – Jack Elway – QB – Arizona State

Denver Broncos neglected to trade Cutler for first overall last year, but will do so this year. Jack Elway is the son of Hall of Fame QB John Elway, so it is obvious that the Broncos will do anything to nab another Elway including ritualistic virgin sacrifice in the name of Baphomet. He redshirted his freshman year so he can laugh at Rudy Carpenter destroy whatever draft value he built up throughout his collegiate career. Although Jack has yet to play a down in college, it goes without saying that he is worth the first pick in the draft. Come on, he’s a ****ing Elway. It goes without saying that he will be a god amongst men.

2 St. Louis Rams – Tim Tebow – TE/FB/WR/RB/OL/DL/LB/CB/S/K/P/LS/KR/PR/Minister – Florida

Speaking of God, here’s Tim Tebow. He missed the cutoff date to declare for the 2009 draft because he was too busy cutting off foreskins in the Philippines. He has the innate ability to play just about every position on the field. The one position he is not suited for is QB due to his long windup and shouting “This is for Jesus!” before every throw, alerting every defensive back on the field. The Rams finally get the outspoken Christian they’ve been missing since Kurt Warner.

3 Kansas City Chiefs – Bear Pascoe – TE – Fresno State

The Chiefs need to draft a TE of the future since Hall of Fame lock Tony Gonzales is in the twilight of his career. Although Bear Pascoe is a participant in the 2009 draft and he isn’t considered top 3 talent, he has the coolest name in football, and we all know names are taken into account when drafting. Look at Hall of Fame linebacker Dick Butkus, he was deserving of first overall pick but slipped to third overall because of his ridiculous name.

4 Seattle Seahawks – Colt McCoy – QB – Texas

The Seahawks already have a good QB in Matt Hasselbeck. However, I believe they will draft for the future. Actually, no I don’t. The Seahawks will draft Colt McCoy so they can stare at Colt McCoy’s hot mom and sister in the stands. In addition to drafting based on family attractiveness, this is also a pick based on name since Colt McCoy is an incredibly American name. Colt McCoy is still good player, he was a Heisman finalist in 2008 and led his team in rushing yardage in 2008 despite being white.

5 TRADE – San Diego Chargers – Ben Roethlisberger – FB – Miami State (Ohio)

The Chargers trade up to 5th overall, taking the Cleveland Brown’s spot. AJ Smith, despite being a reprehensible douche, is a draft trade genius and managed to trade to this pick for only Wings and Beer with Eric Mangini. LaDainian Tomlinson had his lowest total yardage of rushing in his career with the loss of blocking fullback Lorenzo Neal. Ben Roethlisberger is a big bodied player at 6’5" 241 lbs and will help LT get back to his original form.

6 Cincinnati Bengals – Chris Brown – RB – Oklahoma

The two Bengals backs are Chris Perry, who is one of many Big 10 RB busts and average 2.7 YPC in 2008 and Cedric Benson who is nothing but some Bears sloppy seconds. They need a real back to appease Carson Palmer. They also need to fill some seats, so Chris Brown will do halftime shows for them. If you doubt the power of Chris Brown, just ask Rihanna how much of a mauling type back he is.

7 Oakland Raiders – Usain Bolt – Sprinter – Jamaica

It’s no secret that Al Davis loves speed, and nobody is faster than Usain Bolt. The only problem is that he Usain Bolt probably thinks he is being drafted to a soccer team so he’ll probably be running around the field kicking soccer balls through the uprights. The pick does make some sense, Bolt is the only person that can keep up with J-Roc deep bombs.

8 Jacksonville Jaguars – Rico McCoy – LB – Tennessee

Jack Del Rio has a slight case of dyslexia so when he thinks that he is actually drafting Colt McCoy, which would be a massive steal at this point since they need people to come to the stadium to stare at the hot McCoy women. Lucky for him Rico McCoy is a beast a linebacker. But if you see Rico McCoy starting as QB, don’t be too confused, Del Rio will catch on eventually.

9 Green Bay Packers – Vince Lombardi – Head Coach – Fordham

Vince Lombardi’s only mistake in life is coaching for the Redskins, which ended up claiming his life. The Packers need help at the coaching position and nobody does it better than good ol’ Vince. However, the only way to contact Vince Lombardi is through séances held by money-stealing gypsies, but we all can agree that the pros outweigh the cons.

10 San Francisco 49ers – Taylor Mays – FS- USC

Taylor Mays is a local prospect and the 49ers have a gaping need at free safety. However, Taylor Mays won’t be used as a free safety. As it turns out, Taylor Mays is half Jewish and will be used for negotiations for the 49ers to move to the Los Angeles stadium.

11 Buffalo Bills – Capone – He wouldn’t say

Capone is a Crip who moved from LA to set up a base in Mesa and hangs out by my local radio shack. He scares the living **** out of me. Marshawn Lynch is vouching for him to be drafted by the Bills with their 1st round pick and when asked why he said "don’t worry about it". His agent says he wants a $70mil/6-year contract or else some trouble might happen. Russ Brandon won’t ask questions, Ralph Wilson won’t ask questions, and Dick Jauron won’t ask questions. Quite frankly, the entire city of Buffalo is scared.

12 Denver Broncos – Jack Elway – QB – Arizona State

For precautionary reasons, the Denver Broncos will draft Jack Elway twice. They don’t want to risk anything.

13 Washington Redskins – Sam Bradford – QB – Oklahoma

As a PR move, the Washington Redskins draft Sam Bradford. Sam Bradford is an official citizen of the Cherokee nation. Native American organizations have always been on their ass about being the "Redskins", which when you think about it, is an incredibly racist name.

14 New Orleans Saints – Jermaine Gresham – TE – Oklahoma

The Saints and Shockey got screwed over so hard on the Giants – Saints trade that it herniated Shockey’s ass. The Saints need another playmaker so they have a chance to outscore however many points the porous Saints defense allow.

15 Houston Texans – Rex Quando – Trainer – Boise State

There was controversy with the Texans when a story and videos leaked of the Texans practicing in the offseason with pads and going all out, injuring players and just beating the **** out of each other. To toughen up the crybaby *****es who told the NFL on them, the Texans will draft Rex Quando to toughen up those pansies and teach some respect so they won’t tattle.

16 Cleveland Browns – LeBron James – TE – Cleveland Cavaliers

The Cleveland Browns traded away Kellen "Givin’ Ya’ll Staph" Winslow to the Buccs for a 2nd round pick, so they need a TE to fill that spot. LeBron will be playing Tight End despite being a standout Wide Receiver in high school. Insert sexual pun here. At 6’8" with long arms, it will be impossible for either Derek Anderson or Brady Quinn to overthrow him, no matter how hard they try.

More to come; courtesy this.

17 New York Jets – Rupert Murdoch – News Overlord – Oxford University

It is no secret that the Jets like to pull stunts to compete with the Giants for media attention. The Brett Favre trade is probably the most notable stunt in recent memory. Now the Jets cut the middleman and go straight to the head honcho. With Murdoch locked up, they no longer have to compete with the Giants for headlines. To steal Giants fans, the Jets and Murdoch will implement yellow journalism. This just in: ELI MANNING KILLS KITTENS! TOM COUGHLIN EATS BABY FETUS TO MAINTAIN IMMORTALITY! LAWRENCE TAYLOR DID STEROIDS!

18 Chicago Bears – Barack Obama – WR – Harvard

The Bears need change. Obama is the President of change. When your starting wide receiver is a failed corner, that typically spells bad news. When your leading catcher is your running back, that’s even worse news. Obama will change their receiving corps as well as provide inspirational speeches at halftime. But don’t tell them that Obama likes the Steelers more than the Bears, that would just kill their morale :(.

19 Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Dan Williams – DT – Tennessee

Quite frankly, when Rico McCoy was drafted, the Buccs were pissed. Rico McCoy will spend his last year under Monte Kiffin and would transition to familiar defense. Now they have to reach for Dan Williams, who is a projected 3rd or 4th round draft pick but if he was coached by Monte Kiffin, he has to be good. They also need a run stuffer. When they were 9-3 they only needed ONE win to secure a playoff spot. Shortly thereafter, three of the four teams they played put up at least 150 rushing yards on them. That’s pretty damn pathetic.

20 Detroit Lions – Barry Sanders Jr. – RB – Oklahoma State

The Detroit Lions love to take star players and never let them get a taste of the Super Bowl. Sanders experienced this and so will his son. Expect Barry Sanders Sr. to be on suicide watch if his son’s name is called as the Lions draft pick.

from the fanpost called "How the Seahawks can trade down".....

These are a couple of potential real world trade scenarios for trading down:

Trade possibilities include:
Detroit’s 1.20, 2.1 and 3.1 total of 1,695 points.
Philadelphia’s 1.21, 1.28 and 3.21 total of 1,625 points.
Cincinnati’s 1.6 and 3.6 with Seattle sending the 5.1 along with the 1.4, total of 1,802.5 points
Oakland’s 1.7, 3.7 and 4.26 total of 1781 points
Jacksonville’s 1.8, 2.7 and 4.7 with Seattle sending the 3.4 along with the 1.4 total of 1,740 points.
Green Bay’s 1.9 and 2.9 with Seattle sending the 5.1 along with the 1.4 total of 1,802.5 points.
San Francisco’s 1.10 and 2.11 total of 1,770 points.
Buffalo’s 1.11, 2.10 and 5.11 total of 1,762.6 points.
Denver’s 1.12, 2.16 and 3.15 with Seattle sending the 5.1 along with the 1.4 total of 1,777.5 points.

I Really Like:
Detroits Scenario:
1.20 Michael Oher OT
2.1 Evander Hood DT
2.5 Duke Robinson OG
3.4 LeSean McCoy RB
3.21 Michael Hamlin SS

I also Philly’s Scenario:
1.21 Chris Wells RB
1.28 William Beatty OT
2.05 Duke Robinson OG
3.04 Senderick Marks DT
3.21 Antoine Caldwell C

or San Fran’s Looks Good:
1.10 Andre Smith OT
2.05 Duke Robinson OG
2.11 Brian Robiske WR
3.04 Shonne Greene RB
4.05 Antoine Caldwell C

Geeez can you even imagine the future running game with Andre Smith, Duke Robinson, and Caldwell blocking for Shonne Greene? That’s not a running attack… it’s a convoy!!!

by iverson2169 on Apr 1, 2009 11:41 PM PDT reply actions

There's no way

with Ruskell’s high-drafting defensive mentality and Mora’s history as a secondary coach that we draft so many offensive players. Only your scenario with Detroit has us drafting more than one defensive player, while Philly’s scenario has one, and San Fran’s scenario doesn’t have any. Also, it’s extremely unlikely that SF would trade us a 1st and 2nd seeing as we’re in the same division. And considering Detroit’s had extremely expensive rookie contracts for multiple years in a row, there’s no way they are going to pay for the 1.1 and the 1.4 overall contracts. That said, it’s nice to dream, and I’d love any of those draft scenarios you put out.

I fully understand that.... hence the "I Really Like" portion

None of these are PROBABLE…but your right. If I was predictng TR’s mind (dear god help me) it would probably be defense more than offense. At least in the Detroit scenario it was 3-2 offense.

I predicted Aaron Curry to be out pick because he seems like a Ruskell

type guy, and Ruskell is probably frustrated with his 1st round picks to date. Anyone else get the sinking feeling that Curry will fall to us at 4 and we’ll draft him? It’s funny because I wanted Curry before (even when we had Peterson), but now I don’t, now I’m hoping with go QB, OT, or trade down.

by LantermanC on Apr 4, 2009 10:13 AM PDT reply actions

I don't think he'll fall to us,

but if he does, I think he’s Ruskell’s pick considering what we know about Ruskell liking to go OT in later rounds. I have no idea what Ruskell thinks about QBs, so I can’t say a thing about our chances for Stafford or Sanchez. That said, I think Curry gets taken by KC. Pioli has a solid QB, a good RB if he wants to play for them, a receiving corps led by Dwayne Bowe (who is amazing), and I think the top two O-linemen are off the board at 1-2.

by SeaTownBlueDevil on Apr 4, 2009 10:33 AM PDT up reply actions

That scenario would not be so bad in my mind.

The biggest disaster would be
1. Stafford
2. Jason Smith
3. Curry

Simply because I don’t really want Monroe that bad if rumors about him not blocking in the 2nd level are true. Plus his knee concerns. Unless of course some team is desperate for Sanchez or Monroe.

I love the draft so much, I think I actually envy Broncos fans. 2 picks in the middle of the first round! The only thing that could beat that is 2 late 1st rounders and 2 early 2nd rounders (well not the only thing, I’m sure 2 late first rounders and 3 early 2nd rounders beats it as well).

by LantermanC on Apr 4, 2009 11:05 AM PDT up reply actions

Curry makes so much sense for the Chiefs

that they’ll probably pass on them. I was so traumatized last year when guys like Limas Sweed and Brian Brohm fell to the bottom of the 2nd round, that I no longer trust NFL GM’s with making the logical choices. Except Ruskell, of course.

I’m hoping we trade down, but if we stay put I like to think the top 5 players on our “draft board” would be Jason Smith, Matthew Stafford, Aaron Curry, Eugene Monroe and Michael Crabtree, in that order. Beyond those guys I don’t see anyone else worth taking at $4 (not even Sanchez).

I’m not thrilled with drafting a LB in the 1st round, but Curry is a major, major exception.

Ruskell?

We sure as hell could have used Kenny Phillips over Lawrence Jackson last season.

Mistake? Nah, LoJack will probably be decent at worst in due time.

But in terms of more pressing needs, Phillips made more sense. If we were going to draft depth that early, why not at a position with a more dire need? If memory serves me correctly, all we had behind Russell and Grant were Mike Green and CJ Wallace, neither being near starter quality.

7.) Bear Pascoe TE

Woke up with tears nearly welling up in my eyes due to almost thinking this actually happened. Damn.

I like it, but I think you're missing a RB

I believe we’ll take a RB in the round 1-4. Too much of a priority to replace Morris with someone who can step in if JJ goes down, and at least share time with Forsett. I like the FB call though, as I doubt we go into 2009 with only Schmidt on the roster. Wait, didn’t we pick up a FB in FA? Maybe we were just looking at one or more. Can’t recall if we signed any.

How did Clay Matthews make it ahead of Maualuga and Cushing?

I thought the general sentiment was that Maualuga was the best, Cushing next, and Matthews a late first rounder.

by SeaTownBlueDevil on Apr 9, 2009 11:31 AM PDT up reply actions

I put a premium on pass-rushers.

I thought Maybin’s first step could make him go to CLE’s 3-4 as an OLB, and I’m not as big on Orakpo. Matthews is reported to be a better pass-rusher than the two LBs you listed, of if that is true, Buffalo takes him before the other two go, in this scenario.

Raji falling that far is probably a reach (to say the least)

But that doesn’t mean I don’t think that’s how far down he should go. Of note is that I put this up before after I heard of his drug test failure, which subsequently has been reported to be false. I thought a failed drug test (marijuana) would cause him to drop even more.

Mel Kiper's latest draft

Lots of questionable moves.
Such as Chung going 3.01 and Hamlin going 4.10.
I’m wondering if Chung actually has a chance to fall into the last third of the 2nd round, shouldn’t we draft o-line in the 2nd (assuming we don’t draft that in the first) and then trade a 5th and a 6th or a 5th next year to move up to the 20th pick in the 2nd and get Chung? Seems ideal to me.

Yeah

I mean, they could look at it the same way as Ruskell. They can get workable line talent later in the draft, especially with their picks at #2 every round. Curry would provide a shot in the arm to their abysmal defense (if he’s as good as the experts say), and Crabtree would give Bulger someone to throw to, now that Holt and Bruce are both gone.

Someone tell me

Why on earth the Hawks would have the number 4 overall pick, NOT take the BPA, NOT take a player who’ll make an immediate impact and pay a brazillion dollars to a quarterback prospect who’ll sit and sit and sit and sit and even if Hass goes down, probably wouldnt dislodge Seneca anyway? If either of these guys were the second coming of Manning (not Eli) then maybe, but from what read neither of these guys is a likely superstar, just probably good.
If by some miracle Sanchez/Stafford does go #4, expect a trade soon after.
There are holes in a few places but one place there is not a hole is the clipboard carrier.
Expect the pick to be Orakpo, Crabtree or Curry.

Well there's lots of opinion on here

LantermanC, Ive read everything on this site I think and I particularly respect your thoughts, just so you know…
but the fact of the matter is a QB is still unlikely to help in the short term, and thats a lot of money to sit a guy and not play him for awhile when you could have taken the best player available and plugged him in. To me thats not Sanchez.

by Strictnine on Apr 14, 2009 6:41 AM PDT up reply actions

Cool, I just wasn't sure how long you've been a reader, so I thought

I’d link John’s explanation as to why he wants Stafford, and why drafting a QB who won’t start for 2 years wouldn’t be a total waste. I agree that it would kind of suck to have Stafford or Sanchez if there was another player out there would wouldn’t bust and would make an immediate impact, but I just don’t feel strongly about anyone. Monroe and Orakpo both have injury concerns. Crabtree is a bit slow, a bit short, played in a spread offense, and didn’t run a single drill, so we can’t tell much about him, Curry is great and all, but Ruskell seems to be good at identifying LB talent later on in the draft, and I’m not sure 3 elite LBs is needed. If there were a Laron Landry or Glenn Dorsey in this draft, I’d say go ahead and draft him, but there’s not.

by LantermanC on Apr 14, 2009 8:21 AM PDT up reply actions

Glenn Dorsey weighs less than 300 lbs.

That’s even less than his QB at LSU. No wonder he was underwhelming.

2009 SHOCK draft

DETROIT LIONS: Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech
Matt Millen may be gone, but his spirit lives on in Motor City.

ST. LOUIS RAMS: Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia
After drafting Chris Long, Adam Carriker, and Brian Leonard early in the past two drafts, it’s obvious that the Rams front office is going by the BWPA (Best White Player Available) philosophy. Expect more of the same this year.

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS: Connor Barwin, DE/OLB, Cincinnati
All NFL scouts are raving about Barwin’s potential, and compare him to a younger version of Mike Vrabel. Scott Pioli has Mike Vrabel, is familiar with Mike Vrabel, and can now have two Mike Vrabels. Mike Vrabel.

SEATTLE SEAHAWKS: Louis Vasquez, OG, Texas Tech
Wisely looking towards the future, Seattle drafts the strongest player at the combine, so he can carry Matt Hasselbeck’s frail, crumpled body off the field after every offensive series.

CLEVELAND BROWNS: Nate Davis, QB, Ball State
Nate Davis’ learning disability should hopefully spark Brady Quinn or Derek Anderson, who should realize, after watching Nate Davis struggle to pronounce words with three or more syllables, that they don’t have it as bad as other quarterbacks.

CINCINNATI BENGALS: Sammie Stroughter, WR, Oregon State
It worked when they drafted Chad Ochocinco, and it worked when they drafted TJ Hoosyermama. Can lightning strike three times for Oregon State receivers drafted by Cincinnati?

OAKLAND RAIDERS: Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia
Oakland hopes that a 4-headed rushing attack can compensate for the complete lack of talent strewn throughout the rest of the roster.

JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS: Ramses Barden, WR, Cal-Poly SLO
Barden has extensive experience playing for a team that nobody pays attention to or cares about, so he’ll be a perfect fit in Jacksonville.

GREEN BAY PACKERS: Louis Delmas, S, Western Michigan
Ted Thompson’s secret fetish for defensive backs who sport dreadlocks will compel him to make this pick, due to significant lack of dreadlocks in the later rounds.

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS: Mark Sanchez, QB, USC
The 49ers feel like they have to make this pick just so Sanchez will shut the **** up about his Sprint endorsements.

BUFFALO BILLS: Chris Wells, RB, Ohio State
The Bills always seem to choke at the end of the season when it counts most, so they’ll draft a player who will fit perfectly into that mold. “Beanie” played for an Ohio State team that blew two National Championships.

DENVER BRONCOS: Mark Sanchez, QB, USC
Inexperienced head coach Josh McDaniels claims “we had dibs on him first”, which leads to a lengthy and bitter custody battle in court, where eventually the 49ers and Broncos agree to swap Mark every other weekend.

WASHINGTON REDSKINS: Asher Allen, CB, Georgia
The Redskins didn’t expect to even have draft picks at this point, and their draft board is still arranged in alphabetical order.

NEW ORLEANS SAINTS: Hakeem Nicks, WR, North Carolina
The Saints hope that finally, their dreams of achieving the perfect offense will be realized in order to compensate for the points their defense will be giving up. Expect a full year of 60-50 shootouts, which will make Roger Goodell cream his pants because of all the revenue he’ll make.

HOUSTON TEXANS: Chase Daniel, QB, Missouri
With Sage Rosenfels over in Minnesota, the Texans need a new backup quarterback who has an inexplicable and frustrating tendency to lose big games and turn the ball over in the final minutes.

SAN DIEGO CHARGERS: Jorvorskie Lane, RB/FB, Texas A&M
San Diego, with LT retiring, needs a new back to complement the shifty Darren Sproles. With 5’6 Sproles and 300 pound Jorvorskie Lane, the Chargers will finally claim the "Smash and Dash" title for a running back duo. Too bad Lane sucks though.

NEW YORK JETS: Pat White, QB, West Virginia
So here’s the situation. All draft experts seem to agree on one thing. The Jets need a quarterback, and they need a number one receiver to play on the other side of Jerrico Cotchery. Pat White is BOTH of those things AT THE SAME TIME.

DENVER BRONCOS: Josh Freeman, QB, Kansas State
The Broncos now have a quarterback to play on the weekends they don’t have Mark Sanchez.

TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS: Graham Harrell, QB, Texas Tech
An avid Dragonball Z fan growing up, 16 year old head coach Raheem Morris believes he can teach his quarterbacks to fuse all of their skills into one uber-QB that the league won’t be able to stop. The arm strength of Brian Greise. The accuracy of Graham Harrell. The speed of Josh Johnson. The toughness and grit of Byron Leftwich. UNSTOPPABLE.

DETROIT LIONS: Jose Martinez, K, UTEP
The Lions are practically salivating at this pick to draft Jason “Golden Foot” Hanson’s eventual replacement after he turns 60. With the field position they’ll be getting from Kevin Huber whom they eventually draft with the first pick of the second round, they hope that Martinez will be able to kick more 60 yard field goals like he did in college so they can actually score points.

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES: Phil Loadholt, OT, Oklahoma
"He’s really big so he must be really good derp derp derp" says Andy Reid upon making this pick. Eagles fans begin throwing themselves from the balcony of the Radio City Music Hall.

MINNESOTA VIKINGS: BJ Raji, NT, Boston College
The Vikings take the player on the board who is least likely to contribute at the quarterback or wide receiver position, just like they do every year. The number of broken bodies on the ground floor at the Radio City Music Hall begins to mount.

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS: Brian Cushing, LB, USC
Cushing, an obvious steroid user, has somehow eluded punishment despite his completely apparent methods of cheating. Sound familiar? This is the perfect pick for the Patriots.

ATLANTA FALCONS: Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State
Wait a second, this pick actually makes sense. That’s not funny at all. Please ignore this section and continue reading.

MIAMI DOLPHINS: Quan Cosby, WR, Texas
After drafting 30 year old John Beck, the Dolphins will give him a target to throw to in Quan Cosby, who is at least four years older than every receiver in the draft class. It’s sort of like that movie The Program, which showed us that 40 year olds can still compete with college talent. Definitely realistic.

BALTIMORE RAVENS: Rey Maualuga, ILB, USC
Ray and Rey in the middle. Two ferocious hitters. Two team captains. Both on the field at once. The marketing practically writes itself.

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS: Mike Teel, QB, Rutgers
It’s time to start thinking about a future after Peyton Manning. The Colts hope that Teel’s enormous forehead and disgusting, horse-like face will make him a good quarterback like Peyton.

BUFFALO BILLS: Chris Wells, RB, Ohio State
"What, did you not hear us the first time?" An enraged Bills front office asks. Luckily Chris Wells lasted another 17 picks, or they would have felt really stupid.

NEW YORK GIANTS: Austin Collie, WR, BYU
The Giants need a wide receiver to replace Plaxico Burress, but they don’t want one that will cause any trouble or shoot themselves in a nightclub. With that in mind, they take the best white receiver on the board.

TENNESSEE TITANS: PJ Hill, RB, Wisconsin
Now the Titans have a fancy name for their new three-headed rushing attack: Smash, Dash, and Trash.

ARIZONA CARDINALS: Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri
All they need is one more elite receiver to win the Super Bowl, right?

PITTSBURGH STEELERS: Percy Harvin, WR, Florida
Hines Ward still Wines Hard about the franchise QB’s infatuation with targets that can actually catch the ball, so now Pittsburgh gives Fred Flintstone another tool to shape up a passing game with.

Put up your swords. You know not what you do."

Seems like the Seahawks might want Chip Vaugh in the 3rd

I don’t know how reliable this report is, especially given that it’s coming out the day before the draft, but I’ll post it anyway:

Vaughn visited Buffalo a few weeks back. The Bills are one of 4-5 teams that have shown "considerable interest" in him, according to a league source. The source also said that the Seattle Seahawks will draft Vaughn if he slips to them in the third round, adding that several teams are attempting to trade up to get him.

Here's my mock.

1. Detroit Lions: Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia.
Whether I like this pick or not doesn’t matter, it’s done.
2. St. Louis Rams: Jason Smith, T, Baylor.
I worry about Smith’s run blocking more than most, but he’s ready to start at LT from Day One. Not bad for a team who has one tackle on the roster.
3. Kansas City Chiefs: Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest.
It’s either Curry or Tyson Jackson, and the scenario where Cleveland takes the one not taken here looks pretty certain.
4. Seattle Seahawks: Mark Sanchez, QB, USC.
It might not be Seattle picking Sanchez here but I believe he is the pick.
5. Cleveland Browns: Tyson Jackson, DL, LSU.
Having Jackson inside should help Kam Wimbley regain his rookie form. I will be very surprised if they don’t go defense with this pick.
6. Cincinnati Bengals: Andre Smith, T, Alabama.
Cinci doesn’t care about character concerns, they need talent. This point 4 months ago Andre Smith was the #1 tackle.
7. Oakland Raiders: Jeremy Maclin, KR/WR, Missouri.
I do believe they would take Andre Smith over Maclin if he were available.
8. Jacksonville Jaguars: Eugene Monroe, T, Virginia.
This pick is for sale, but I’m doing this mock with no additional trades.
9. Green Bay Packers: B.J. Raji, DT, Boston College.
Dom Capers needs a big body for his 3-4, insert BJ Raji.
10. San Francisco 49ers: Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech.
Too good of a player for SF to pass up.
11. Buffalo Bills: Michael Oher, T, Ole Miss..
12. Denver Broncos: Brian Orakpo, DE, Texas.
13. Washington Redskins: Robert Ayers, DE, Tennessee.
14. New Orleans Saints: Chris "Beanie" Wells, RB, Ohio State.
15. Houston Texans: Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio State.
16. San Diego Chargers: Eben Britton, T, Arizona.
17. New York Jets: Brian Cushing, LB, USC.
18. Denver Broncos (from CHI): Rey Maualuga, LB, USC.
19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Josh Freeman, QB, Kansas State.
20. Detroit Lions (from DAL): Peria Jerry, DT, Ole Miss.
21. Philadelphia Eagles: Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia.
22. Minnesota Vikings: Alphonso Smith, CB, Wake Forest
23. New England Patriots: Everette Brown, DE, Florida State.
24. Atlanta Falcons: Larry English, DE/OLB, Northern Illinois.
25. Miami Dolphins: Darius Butler, CB, Connecticut.
26. Baltimore Ravens: Aaron Maybin, DE, Penn State.
27. Indianapolis Colts: James Laurinaitis, LB, Ohio State.
28. Buffalo Bills (from PHI via CAR): Michael Johnson, DE, Georgia Tech.
29. New York Giants: Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland.
30. Tennessee Titans: Clay Matthews, LB, USC.
31. Arizona Cardinals: Connor Barwin, OLB, Cincinnati.
32. Pittsburgh Steelers: Alex Mack, C, California.

Round 2
33. Detroit Lions: Louis Delmas, S, Western Michigan
34. New England Patriots (from KC): Donald Brown, RB, Connecticut
35. St. Louis Rams: Brian Robiskie, WR, Ohio State
36. Seattle Seahawks: William Beatty, T, Connecticut
68. Seattle Seahawks: Derrick Williams, WR, Penn State
105. Seattle Seahawks: Shonn Greene, RB, Iowa
