Michael Bumpus May Get a Friend
Not to say that he isn't gregarious and charismatic, but Michael Bumpus may be joined by another former Coug wideout. Eric Williams at the TNT is reporting that the Hawks attended a workout by Brandon Gibson. The video loads slowly, but you get a chance to watch Gipson run in and out of breaks and make some nice catches. The throws are courtesy of Jeff Rowe. The defense is courtesy of Brian Russell.
Even in the less-than ideal weather, with some rain and wind whipping across the field, Gibson put up decent numbers. He ran between a 4.55 and 4.63 in the 40-yard dash, jumped 34 inches in his vertical leap and 9 feet, five inches in the standing broad job. Gibson measured in at just over six feet tall, and weighed in at 206 pounds.
Where exactly is Gibson projected to go?
Currently, Gibson is projected to be drafted in the second day of the draft, between the third and seventh round.
Right. So we've learned that Gibson is not a first- or second-round pick. Vagueries aside, he's local (Puyallup), he's Pac 10, and he's a late round receiver. Gibson could very well end up a Seahawk depending on just how far he drops.

Sounds intriguing,
but how many late round guys can we have on our team? Perhaps Ruskell is taking the same approach with receivers that GMZ takes with bullpen guys. Not a bad idea, but we seem to have several talents already there (Housh, Branch, and Burleson or Morrow and Fields).
It's not a perfect analogy. Houshmandzadeh and Branch are on the older side.
Drafting younger receivers to stash away makes sense. If the team can find guys who could be good with two years of learning, why not keep a couple around and hope one sticks later?
The M’s were trying to find one guy to be the man NOW, although the Morrow decision has trashed that anyway.
It does make sense I agree.
If you can get a bunch of guys for cheap that may or may not be useful in the future but have no real cost now, take advantage of it. But it seems like we have almost too many: Obamanu, Taylor, Hass, Kent, Payne, Bumpus, and Trent Shelton (who is this?). Can we put all the guys on the practice squad, or are we just going to have to cut a lot come August? I guess my concern is, if we draft this guy, who are we not drafting? We already have decent depth at WR (in my opinion), why not take a chance on Mike Reilly or my (and your) personal favorite Tyrell Sutton?
Of course this whole thing could be moot if this guy goes late in the 7th and all we use is a compensatory pick on him. Even though it says 2nd day, I can’t imagine too many scouts looking at WSU real close, given that they were one of the worst teams ever.
"The defense is courtesy of Brian Russell."
That made me chuckle.
Anyway I wouldn’t be against using a late round pick on a guy like this but only if the team thinks it really getting a steal. There are many other positions that need some young talent.
GiBson
is a solid WR but like Lanterman said we have a lot of lower-tier talent at the position. I hope he does well wherever he ends up.
When do you think he'd have gone last year?
He had a pretty damn good junior season if memory serves. I think he could potentially be mid 2nd round talent in the 4th or 5th. Kind of the Carlson suck when the team sucks your sr year pattern.
I think I just pooped your pants...
67 catches for 1,180 yards and 9 tds, so he did indeed have a very nice Junior year.
Speculation about when he would have been drafted is both difficult and irrelevant.
Irrelevant? How so?
It might tell a lot about his potential, sort of like Chris Canty being a surefire first rounder but falling, Frank Gore/Michael Bush dropping because of injury, people like Vernon Davis rising because of combine performance, etc.

So?
If you assumed that Gibson had declared last year, it is not terribly rediculous to slot him into some sort of after the fact mock draft. Yes its speculative, but so is every mock draft that has ever happened.
Speculative information like this is helpful to people like me who do not follow the college game very closely.
I think I just pooped your pants...
Didn't realize he was quite that good.
Sure I’d take a flier on him then. As others have alluded to, I’m not quite sold on our corps of low risk raw talented WR. This guy (from the limited material I’ve read) seems like he might be a good fit for the WCO.
Obamanu, Kent, Taylor, Bumbus, Payne, Hass, McMuffin
All people we could be talking about as possible difference makers if we hadn’t signed Housh, released Branch, or had Burleson have a setback.
Why add to a position thats already full of talent. Especially talent Ruskell himself drafted.
How about late round flyers on DT’s, RB’s, OG’s, OT’s, QB’s
Even more kickers!!
I don't think many of us are sold on the long term prospects of Bumpus, Payne, or Hass and the first three on that list are questionable as well.
We’ve seen McMullen at work and that’s clearly underwhelming.
Indeed.
Out of all these players I only see a couple making any impact at all, and even that’s only as 4th/5th options who may someday become serviceable 3rds.

Names do not make talent
Obamanu, Kent, Taylor, Bumbus, Payne, Hass, McMuffin, how many of them are more talented then Brandon Gipson? I have heard that he runs great routs and did well at the combine.
Just because the list of above players are there, it does not mean they have to stay there. They will be dropped for more talented players as more talented players come along. I think the object was to draft them, see how they work out, and the ones who are not developing will be released.
Isn't it Gibson or am I wrong?

It is Gibson
but I am a lousy speller so I fully take advantage of copy and paste, which I did.
I know one thing for sure...
I really liked what i saw of Michael Bumpus last year. Could he be the next blue-collar Bobby Engram type surprise in this league? Any thoughts?

Don't really see what people saw in Bumpus.
He had some pretty good hands but from what I saw he wasn’t really getting open. Also, Forsett was a superior punt returner as well.
The thing that people tend to forget is that he came out of college with loads of talent. The first Biletnikoff winner and was a mid second round pick.
