Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Bold

For those of you who missed the Hawks press conference on Tuesday, the TNT posted a partial transcript.

We learn that T.J. Houshmandzadeh lacks not for confidence:

On not playing with Chad Ocho Cinco:

"Tell the video people here to get you the tape of our last couple years and you’ll see who was getting the majority of the double teams. … You’ll see who was really the focal point.

Hasselbeck and Houshmandzadeh are familiar with one another:

"I’ve actually worked out with Hasselbeck for a couple years. He comes to L.A. and runs around with his shirt off (laughs). We’ll be running around throwing routes out in L.A. and he’s been down there a couple times."

T.J. also has plenty of confidence when it comes to his new team's receivers:

“I think with me, Nate (Burleson) and Deion (Branch), I’d probably say we’ve got the best receiving core right now if everybody can stay healthy.”

I think he means "corps"

Though I guess it’s debatable.

As for Houshmandzadeh, I expect a wide receiver to have overflowing self confidence.

The transcriber probably saw it as a statement about the central strength of the group, but I agree that it should be "corps".

I actually like his confidence. I don’t love him partially disparaging Johnson, but I do like the competitiveness.

Heh.

Payne should be working on that resume over said breakfast.

This is kind of sad, actually.

I do have to feel for the guy. I was there at the SF game when he finally had a chance to start and got nailed right in the knee first catch.

Sounds like the perfect intro to a Steve Kelley article.

And rec’d.

Is that the light at the end of the tunnel, or the headlights of an oncoming train?

hahaha

I think he needs some lessons from Russell. Though, Payne is pretty gritty, maybe too gritty for his own good.

He talked about Chad quite a bit more than the one clip, above.

I do like his confidence. His ‘the best two’ interruption of Mora was fun when asked who’ll play in two WR sets.

haha

I thought that was awesome too

I'm assuming it'll mostly be Housh and Branch

although Burleson will probably see plenty of playing time.

"Part, fools!

by Fearless Frog on Mar 5, 2009 10:50 AM PST up reply actions

I'm thinking

Housh at X, Branch at Z in the 2 WR sets. Burleson at X, Branch at Z, and Housh moving inside to Y for 3WR sets. That seems to match each guy up with their strengths. We loose a little speed and TAC ability with TJ replacing Burly as the main split-end, but make up for it in size, hands & reliability.

by jteckmann on Mar 5, 2009 11:04 AM PST up reply actions

That sounds like the best lineups to me

I think that would be the best arrangement. Foresee any issues with Houshmandzadeh learning X & Y?

Holmgren has said X will most likely get the most receptions, in his offense. Knapp stresses balance, is said to be kind of predictable (so was Holmgren, when things weren’t working right), and most certainly won’t use as many different personnel packages as Holmgren. That suggests to me X would get even more of the load with Knapp. For those with fantasy interests.

Hey, consider how *long* he's been playing alongside that guy

going all the way back to OSU. I’ll cut him some slack — living with Chad’s mouth and ego day in and day out, year in and year out has to have gotten really old after a while . . .

by The Ancient Mariner on Mar 5, 2009 11:01 AM PST up reply actions

Seriously though, Chad Johnson is mind-boggling good.

Like, I can’t put it into words how freaking talented that crazy ass is.

you ever seen the "in their own words" about ochocinco?

it came out like three years ago and it is seriously the funniest thing i’ve ever seen.

tj and carson palmer having serious conversations about plays with chad just yelling “THAT GUY SUCKS! I’M OPEN! I’M ALWAYS OPEN!”

by cro-mag! on Mar 5, 2009 11:26 AM PST up reply actions

I haven't, actually.

Do you have a link?

"Part, fools!

by Fearless Frog on Mar 5, 2009 11:26 AM PST up reply actions

I saw that.

And Chad had me rolling. It’s hard not to like him if you’ve seen that.

by Misfit74 on Mar 5, 2009 1:38 PM PST up reply actions

"THAT GUY SUCKS!"

“PASS TO 85! I’M ALWAYS OPEN!”

what about the part where Housh is training by doing exotic plyometrics like balancing on one leg on a ball and doing squats and chad is just standing next to him (eating mcdonalds) looking totally confused?

by cro-mag! on Mar 6, 2009 8:48 AM PST up reply actions

Self-Confidence

Heck, I expect a professional athlete to have overweening self-confidence. They’re in a tough business. If you doubt yourself for a moment, you’re done.

“You’ve got to play this game with fear and arrogance.” Crash Davis is right, and not just for baseball.

by robbbbbb on Mar 5, 2009 12:25 PM PST up reply actions

I feel like

Burleson was about to break out last year too. He sure looked the part for going down in the BUF game. Housh takes us from rags to riches baby!

by michaelfox99 on Mar 5, 2009 10:50 AM PST reply actions

Same. I remember going into the season wondering how I WRs would do without Branch and Engram

and then Burleson looked amazing for the first half, only to get injured for the rest of the season.

by LantermanC on Mar 5, 2009 10:53 AM PST up reply actions

I think maybe you're being sentimental

He had four incomplete passes including a drop in the end zone.

by John Morgan on Mar 5, 2009 11:21 AM PST up reply actions

Wide open, no less.

Although the TD on the immediately next play was mildly impressive.

"Part, fools!
Put up your swords. You know not what you do."

by Fearless Frog on Mar 5, 2009 11:26 AM PST up reply actions

Hm, don't remember that.

I just remember the 5 catches for 60 yards and a TD before the 3rd quarter was over with a confused looking Hasselbeck. So yes, I was just being sentimental I guess. Probably should rely more on statistics than my memory of an event that happened half a year ago and that I tried to erase from my memory due to it being such a bad game.

by LantermanC on Mar 5, 2009 11:26 AM PST up reply actions

he was getting open consistently, though

which was a pretty big improvement over 2007.

by djafrot on Mar 5, 2009 12:11 PM PST up reply actions

Certainly.

But his role seems redundant since we essentially signed a better player in Housh.

"Part, fools!

I wish the Seahawks

would go into fa every year not making any splash’s.
This was an outstanding signing.

I try to help with everything," Fernandez said. "If the coach says go rebound, I go rebound. I work for the team.

""If I'm playing this game to get media and attention, I shouldn't be here," Aldridge said. "I'm here to play basketball, and do what I can do to help this team win."

by Dragonage on Mar 5, 2009 1:17 PM PST reply actions

Err, I would consider signing Teej 'making a splash'.

"Part, fools!
Put up your swords. You know not what you do."

by Fearless Frog on Mar 5, 2009 2:00 PM PST up reply actions

I think Dragonage was referring to Ruskell's pre-draft comments

that the Seahawks were not going to be very active in FA, before singing the no.1 WR on the market to a large contract. Typical GM BS really.

by JamesMurphy on Mar 5, 2009 2:17 PM PST up reply actions

Now if we can just make a splash and re-sign some of our guys, like Willis

"It's just one big guy against another big guy, both teams know what's at stake. The one of them comes out on top and it feels good."

by Wayward Llama on Mar 5, 2009 2:35 PM PST up reply actions

Oh, yeah. Forgot about that.

Ruskell you clever, you.
Now all he needs to do is draft Crabtree and reveal that signing Housh was a smokescreen so the Rams and Chiefs wouldn’t.

Put up your swords. You know not what you do."

We're not calling him that

It’s retarded and longer, I vote no.

Oh, fine. If you insist.

he’s legit

Thank you.

We anticipate a lot of solid production like his career with Cincinatti.
