Around SBN: Clippers Need To Realize That Spurs Are The Anti-Grizzlies

The Browns Light the Fuse

If you happened upon any sports websites yesterday, you may have noticed that the Browns are reportedly deep in negotiations with the Giants in an effort to rid themselves of Braylon Edwards. They Browns would net some picks in return. There have also been rumors of the Browns accepting offers for Brady Quinn. As you may or may not recall, Cleveland already shipped Kellen Winslow Jr. off to Tampa Bay for more (undisclosed) draft picks.

Who the Browns target in the upcoming draft will be interesting to watch, as they could end up with the most firepower with which to trade. Depending on who the new Front Office in Cleveland lusts after, they may have to pull some draft day trades. Seattle is sitting quietly at number four, and hopefully Ruskell et al. have the cajones to hold Cleveland over a barrel if possible. A little over a week away, the draft just got a little bit more interesting.

I'm always tempted in Madden

to just trade away all my players of worth and get a ton of draft picks. That’s a video game though… Also, I’m not sure if this is a ‘weak’ draft or not, it certainly was being labeled as such a few months ago, but if it is, it would make more sense to trade away players for picks in a stronger draft.

draft picks in madden suck

always get stuck with dudes that don’t make sense, like a 98 Speed and a 75 Accel, or 90 pass block and 65 run block.

i trade my draft picks for players every year.

Me too.

I fucking hate Madden sometimes…

This draft.

This draft has me ambivalent about the whole thing. I’m excited about the idea of drafting our future QB but he may be gone. I was excited about Crabtree, but have cooled considerably on him. Drafting him would, of course, renew my excitement for him. Curry is nice but I’d rather get one of the top LTs, though also would welcome adding what many consider ‘the best player in the draft’ at four. I wonder if the guy can cover and pass rush in the NFL, mainly pass rush. I have concern that both tackles and Stafford will be gone, which may or may not be ‘worst case scenario’, at least in my book.

One of the things I’ll be interested to see is if the team goes off course from history and drafts guys who fall outside the well-fortified ‘Ruskell criteria’ on this site. Are the only guys we draft going to be firmly pegged for those reasons or does TR go ‘off the path’ on a player or more?

Cleveland is confusing to me, but I can see why they are making most of these moves or rumored moves. All except Quinn. I think they’ll keep him. He hasn’t really had a fair shake, yet, and the media (and coach?) are already seemingly running him out of town. I’m not really buying it. Quinn is not Cutler, so it wouldn’t be as unforgivable as what McDaniels has done, IMO. If I were a Denver fan, I’d be unhappy. If I were a Cleveland fan, probably a bit more understanding for now. If they move Braylon, maybe Crabtree is pretty much known to be falling at least to them…

I'm actually at the point where any scenario is exciting.

Even Monroe, which seems to me kinda lousy value when he’s the second LT picked in the first four picks.

But any of Stafford, Crabtree, Smith, Curry would be absolutely fine for me at #4. Trading down and getting one of those guys, or trading down and getting Sanchez, would be gold.

My question is: has Ruskell had any thoughts of moving on Quinn? We do have a high 2nd, would that be enough? Certainly it’s a good start. Haha, dream-thought-that-might-be-fantasy-GM’ing-too-much: Our first rounder for Quinn and Edwards!

by djafrot on Apr 15, 2009 10:31 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, it seems like those are the four elite prospects

So at #4 the Hawks should get one of them. I guess Sanchez is a possibility since he may not be in the top 4 but QB has a higher value.

I’d be bummed if they ended up with Eugene Monroe, but Mel Kiper seems to think they’ll take him, so I’m pretty confident it won’t happen.

Back to the Browns… if they really do crave the Crabtree, they made need to trade up to #3 to make sure they get him. Certainly the Seahawks could take him, or trade with another team (Oakland?) that really wants him, too. I wouldn’t even be that surprised if he went second overall. This whole draft is nuts. I won’t be at all surprised if there’s much more wheeling and dealing than usual in the top ten picks. Or one or two of those weird trades where a team trades up exactly one spot to block another team from jumping ahead of them.

Like how the Browns traded back up into the first round for Quinn,

seemingly just so the Ravens wouldn’t get him.

I was thinking of the 2006 draft

Where Cleveland and Baltimore swapped the 12th and 13th overall picks.

I'd like to see us deal for Quinn

since we need Hasselbeck’s heir apparent, I think he’s a better risk than either Stafford or Sanchez, and I think he’d cost us less, to boot.

by The Ancient Mariner on Apr 15, 2009 10:53 AM PDT up reply actions

I actually like Quinn as well.

But theoretically he should be ready to start now. Hasselbeck isn’t done now, he is a coin flip two years from now. Which is perfect for Stafford or Sanchez.

by LantermanC on Apr 15, 2009 10:56 AM PDT up reply actions

So pull the trigger.

Grab Quinn and make him your starter, and deal Hass for whatever you can get.

Clean break, no more questions. Move this franchise into the future, we know it has to be done. Surely you could get Quinn for our 2nd + something, and Hass could net us at least a 4th so really we could acquire Quinn for a 2nd round pick.

Leaves us with our first pick to grab some support for the kid in the form of an LT or a Crabtree.

by djafrot on Apr 15, 2009 11:41 AM PDT up reply actions

That actually sounds like a decent plan.

I’m sure Minny would be interested in Hass for a 3rd rounder since they are in ‘win now’ mode?
However, this is the kind of move that gets a GM fired. If we don’t make the move, no one will care or blame Ruskell because one rarely gets blamed for non-moves (except for drafting someone over someone else, not really a non-move though). If we do, and Quinn sucks or gets injured, he’ll be gone by 2011 despite having several years of sustained success. Or at least that’s how I think things will play out.

by LantermanC on Apr 15, 2009 11:45 AM PDT up reply actions

Dunno about Minny...

…considering we play them this year. Public relations disaster!

That said, Ruskell’s already taken a major risk by trading a 1st for Deion Branch.

Also, I wonder how many people would view standing by Hass without bringing in some quality future/backup material as “risky”? I sure would.

by djafrot on Apr 15, 2009 12:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Put a clause in the contract

stating that Hasselbeck cannot play against a team from the city of Seattle during the calendar year of 2009 (in case of playoffs).

by LantermanC on Apr 15, 2009 12:36 PM PDT up reply actions

For my part

I’d plan on one season, for two reasons. First, Quinn should theoretically be ready to start, but given the coaches he’s had, who knows? Second, he’ll be learning a new offense. Trade for Quinn, keep Hass, let Quinn apprentice under him for a year and let the coaches get to know his strengths and weaknesses, then deal Hasselbeck and let the Brady Quinn era begin when everybody knows each other.

by The Ancient Mariner on Apr 15, 2009 12:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Quinn's shown enough to start, in my opinion.

And this is a run-based offense that should offer him time to warm up. Plus, if he rides the bench, how much experience is he going to get? It’s somewhat of a rebuild year anyhow, in my opinion (at the moment).

Also, another year and Hass will be worth even less.

I’d only keep Hass if we brought in a total rookie like Stafford or Sanchez.

by djafrot on Apr 15, 2009 12:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Huh?
Even Monroe, which seems to me kinda lousy value when he’s the second LT picked in the first four picks.

Big Walt was the 6th pick, and Orland Pace was the 1st pick in the same draft. I’m not saying that this is the situation here, but the 2nd tackle taken isn’t always a bad thing.

by LantermanC on Apr 15, 2009 10:55 AM PDT up reply actions

I know, it just FEELS like it, doesn't it?

And is anyone here seriously convinced that Smith or Monroe will live up to Jones or Pace? I just have the feeling that the tackles available in the second aren’t that far off from Smith/Monroe and that our first pick could be a real “difference” changer in Stafford/Crabs/Curry/maybe Sanchez.

by djafrot on Apr 15, 2009 11:37 AM PDT up reply actions

Depends on if you believe they'll still be there in the 2nd.

Britton could be gone by 21. Beatty could be gone by 28. Duke, Mack, Unger could all be gone before our 2nd rounder.
If we were set on O-line, it could end up a decision between Loadholt or Wood, or Jamon Meredith in the 3rd if he’s still available.

by LantermanC on Apr 15, 2009 11:42 AM PDT up reply actions

Which would suck because I think Loadholt will make an average RT at best

and definitely shouldn’t be our second round pick.

Braylon, for all his massive flaws, wouldn't make sense to ship off.

Stallworth is looking at some serious time, Jurevicius is gone, Winslow was traded…which leaves DA/Quinn who to throw to? Leave it to the Browns to ruin a good thing. Since apparently Joe Thomas and D’Qwell Jackson are the only two players not on the trading block, what are the chances of someone raiding their roster for, say, Eric Steinbach or Kamerion Wimbley or something?

Personally, I think all this colossal stupidity regarding their roster is Mangina trying to have job security by running the team into the ground and cite ‘rebuilding’ for several seasons.

getting Quinn would be sweet

2nd round pick in exchange – Keep Hass and let Quinn learn in a decent environment.

Sucks to be Leinart.

He’s going to be 29 in his first NFL starting season?

by LantermanC on Apr 15, 2009 12:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Leinart deserved it, though.

And no one could have expected Kurt Warner to rise from the ashes (although I always knew he had it in him which is why last offseason I was eying him as a potential backup when he became an FA when the Cards announced Leinart would be starting).

Quinn, he’s had to endure sitting behind Derek fucking Anderson.

"Part, fools!

by Fearless Frog on Apr 15, 2009 12:37 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think Leinart minds being paid to not play anyways.

He still might get a decent sized contract when his contract is up. Then he can be the ‘Brad Johnson’ type backup who’s around in emergency cases and for veteran leadership.

Of course if Leinart is dying to play then I apologize, but it sure doesn’t seem like he’s itching to play or he’d demand a trade or something.

by LantermanC on Apr 15, 2009 12:44 PM PDT up reply actions

I have a feeling Leinart will probably finish up this season for the Cards.

Warner’s 1000 years old, he’s got to go down eventually. It’s really interesting just how desperate the Cards were to keep him and make sure Leinart rode the pine.

by djafrot on Apr 15, 2009 12:50 PM PDT up reply actions

I like Quinn, but...

I’m not thoroughly convinced he’s not Rick Mirer pt.2. I don’t think so, but that would be reason to trade him away if you’re the Browns and you think that…
