Chicago Trades Two First Round Picks, Third for Jay Cutler and Fifth Round Pick
That's a lot, but not unreasonable. All made possible by Keary Colbert. Who says history will drop you like so many slippery, slippery footballs?
Chicago moves the 18th pick and probably a pick in the mid-to-late twenties next year to become a title contender. Even after all these years, the Bears have a top ten defense. Matt Forte played pretty well and Chicago's interior offensive line is strong. They added left tackle Chris Williams last season. Wide receiver is still a need, but watch some unknowns take off with Cutler tossing the rock. Earl Bennett anyone?
After slow offseason, I'd say it's a pretty good day to be a Bears fan.
Need proof?

What about Kyle Orton?
He’s less mention-worthy than a 5th rounder?

What's the likelihood Denver drafts a QB with one of those 1st rounders?
One who can sit a year or two under Orton?
I think Orton is better than a lot of people give him credit for.
Bears fans seemed to be happy with him before this. The Chicago offense was putrid, but it wasn’t because of him, he had no one to throw the ball to.
It's great to be a Florida Gator!

Chris Simms is already on the Bronco's roster.
My best guess is that Simms will be the starter, and Orton will be the backup, which means they probably won’t take a QB with either 1st rounder. They didn’t ask for Orton in the trade just so he could be their 3rd stringer.

Call me dumb
but trading #4, a third rounder in 2010, and Hasselbeck sounds like a good trade to me.
Did we just stare success in the eye, and walk away?
It is what it is...
Doesn't have to be, really
He’s super cheap and super young compared to Hasselbeck. Orton could be a couple notches worse than Hasselbeck and still be equally valuable. I think Denver figures they have a lot of talent in place and that Orton has a shot to be pretty good in a New England style system. And if not, shoot, start over.
Which is to say
The Broncos would not likely accept it. This deal adds two picks first round picks, clears cap space and adds a 26 year old quarterback with some upside.
Indeed
Well, all we can do is wonder what deal would have made sense.
I would rather see proven value to that of unproven value that costs more. Seem we could have found a way to pair a proven young commodity in a QB to that of our youthful defense.
I congratulate Chicago for having the balls to try and win.

I have since run into some other fans who are downright giddy
“We finally have a quarterback! It’s been 25 years!”
I asked them if he still counts as a quarterback if he has nobody to throw the ball to. The answer was: “He’s from Santa Claus! And he’s been a Bears fan his whole life!” Frankly, I don’t think they were even listening to me.
Everyone always talked about Mike Brown being hurt
but it was whether or not Harris was in that made the difference between Raven’s type of elite defense and a good defense.

Ruskell has been ruthless with Seahawks whining about their contracts or even refusing to restructure. I don’t think he seriously considered Cutler.

Okay, So Back to the Football
You’re worried about Denver getting Detroit’s pick. It still makes sense for them to trade up and get a QB. What about with the Seahawks? They’re now carrying 12 and 18 in the first round. Is that a fair deal for #4, if Stafford is there? Does Denver pull that deal?

The NFL has comparable to most sports a stupendously short season, very high rate of injury, fluke injury, and injury related decline.

is Cutler and Bennett went to the same school. Also, last year’s first round pick Chris Williams was a Vanderbilt tackle. Not sure if Williams played when Cutler was still around though.
I don't think he did.
And I heard he wasn’t that great when he played but was struggling through injury. I suppose signing Pace and letting Williams adjust to the pro game on the right side should be helpful for the couple of games before Pace blows out a knee or something.

Maybe they'll have a Falcons type draft...
…and Orton or Simms turn out……..HA! Or maybe Josh McDaniels can make somebodies out of nobodies just like Belichek. Who knows. I think itll be a close race for dead last.
Perhaps, but
I like this trade for Denver, in the sense that they felt they had no choice but to trade Cutler. Assuming the #1 option was no longer available — you know, no being gigantic idiots when dealing with Cutler since last season ended, and keeping him in good spirits — then getting two #1’s and change is a really good haul.
They could draft great and suck out loud in 2009, however. Considering that the Patriots traded Cassel for just a second-rounder, this is a big deal. It’s possible both teams benefit from this trade, in the long run.
Say Denver gets
Malcolm Jenkins and Ray Maualuga in the 1st. Their defense is already drastically better. Then their RBs can stay healthy, and voila, I think 8-8 isn’t too unrealistic of a goal.
They still have no defensive line
which is what their problem has been all along. They had Champ and DJ Williams and some other talent in those group but good god is their front 4 bad.
the Bears paid a lot for Cutler
2 first rounders? But then again, they’ve been needing a good QB for the longest time. With that defense, I could easily see them winning Super Bowl because of this. Who gets the better deal will come down to who the Broncos select with their picks, but this also sets them back a few years to being competitive.
So basically
If Cutler goes down, the Bears, at the moment, would turn to Rex Grossman.
They had every chance to get rid of that stiff and instead traded Orton.
SSR's NFL Fun Fact: Andy Reid is the only coach in the league who uses the pass to set up the pass.
They already have Grossman. You mean the Broncos right?

By the way, the Bears play at Qwest this year
Time to bring the pain, Mebane.
SSR's NFL Fun Fact: Andy Reid is the only coach in the league who uses the pass to set up the pass.
I don't think Orton is awful
and I think the relative talent of the Bears and Broncos will pull Cutler and Orton’s performance closer than some would expect, but I think as long as Chicago builds around Cutler, the potential is huge.
I think Orton is actually pretty decent.
Which is why I question this trade. Cutler is good, but why trade so much away? Orton could be good if he had an offensive line and wide receivers
It's great to be a Florida Gator!
by Wayward Llama on Apr 2, 2009 5:07 PM PDT up reply actions
He's better than about 10 of the starting quarterbacks in the league
Which isn’t saying a lot I guess but he should be a decent stop gap while they find a new QB.
Bears also just picked up Orlando Pace
So he can play for two games and then go on injured reserve. If the Bears were smart they’d sit him the whole season and then use him for the playoffs.
Pace at right tackle?
I think the Bears are doing something this offseason. If only football wasn’t so much chance.
Reads like they plan to use him as their starting left tackle

Doesn’t look like they have anybody else on that side. It’s a gamble that’s for sure, if it pays off it could pay off huge, but if it doesn’t they better have a backup plan.

Absolutely Freakin’ Hallarious!
Mayock is saying he thinks Sanchez is perfect for Denver
and with all the picks they have should be trading up to ensure they get him. Unfortunately, if they think Seattle may take him at 4, they’ll be looking to trade to 3. Frankly, I think that’s too high and they won’t do that. IF we trade with Oakland, so they can get to Curry or Crabtree, then we’d be sitting right in front of Jacksonville and might be in a position to trade down with Denver. Likewise, at 12 we might be in position to trade down with Jets at 17 so they can take Freeman in front of the Jets. I’m assuming Tampa Bay will try to jump in front of the Jets, so Jets proactively need to jump to 12 where Tampa doesn’t have the picks (no 2nd rounder) to make that happen. So that’s my new fantasy draft order. Pick up 3 high 3rd round picks from Oakland, Denver and Jets for trading down to 17, then use 2 of those to trade back into another mid 2nd rounder. We wind up with 17, 37, 50’ish, 68 and 71 in the first 3 rounds. That would be a nice start to rebuilding.
I think we should be trading down to picks with better value
I can’t think of a player at 4 that will make sense at the requisite salary.
what would be funny is if we had philadelphia's two lower picks
i wonder how many people would be all “trade up! trade up! get a star!”
i know
just sayin there’d probably be an equal amount of other people saying just the opposite. I’m fine with what we got, having basically your pick of the entire draft is rather exciting to me (of that could change, depending on who we select.)
Sanchez to Denver makes sense
for various reasons, but I can’t help but wonder if 1) he’ll be there at 18 [you mentioned a trade-up, which I could see], or 2) they might not be content w/ Orton for the next couple of seasons in a win now w/ experience QB mentality?
I'm not saying it's likely that it happens.
And in fact, I believe it would be foolhardy to think that. That doesn’t McDaniels doesn’t have that mentality, though.
Next Season
Is also looking like a good QB draft class. Orton for 1-2 years and make a move if necessary for one of next years blue chip QBs.
Denver has Orton, Chris Simms, and Darrell Hackney
Just laughable how badly they screwed up a good thing.
SSR's NFL Fun Fact: Andy Reid is the only coach in the league who uses the pass to set up the pass.

This is a good test
Young quarterback traded in his prime. System, surrounding talent or innate ability?
It will be very interesting though, in terms of surrounding offensive talent
Denver is in much better shape then Chicago. It’ll be interesting to see how it unfolds next season.
exactly what I'm thinking
I like Cutler, I really warmed up to the idea of him as a possibility for Seattle. But one reason why is because I thought he’d be switching between similar systems and surrounded by comparable O talent.
That said, I do have some misgivings about the guy, and a nagging suspicion that some of the great #’s he put up in DEN were “hollow”, for lack of a better term.
Seeing him go to the Bears will be a good test of how those numbers translate and just how much a QB elevates the play of those around him or vice versa.
Of course, if he fails the MSM storyline will be because he’s an emo pussy who doesn’t have the machismo to be a leader of men.

well then it'll be doubly interesting
now we might also see how well those adjusted metrics meet reality
Football is so team dependent
Quarterbacks in their prime are rarely traded, so seeing how Cutler does is interesting if not necessarily definitive.

Field Gulls - The SBN Seattle Seahawks Blog
Will McDaniels run a zone blocking scheme like Mike Shanahan did?
I say this because that offense as we all know was based a lot on run – and the ability to just plug and play any old runningback. It was often the reason for Denver’s offensive success, albeit not last year considering the Seahawkesque injuries they sustained at runningback so Cutler had to carry the team. I do not believe Orton is even near Cutler in talent and same with Chris Simms so I would assume a strong running game would be essential to continue their ongoing success. The Broncos would have been nowhere near in the running for a playoff spot if it hadnt been for Cutler carrying the team on his shoulders. The defense was abysmal and with such a garbage defense like that/Orton’s game managing ways it should be important to sustain long drives which of course is done best with a solid running game. Anyways back to my original point. If McDaniels switches it up to a man to man scheme would the runningbacks and more importantly the offensive line be the right personel to run his new scheme? Did he keep the same offensive line coach? What kind of background does offensive coordinator Mike McCoy have? I believe it was LantermanC who said theres a chance of them going 8-8 with the right pickups on defense. I agree. If Josh McDaniels can prove hes really the offensive genius hes been praised to be (grooming Matt Cassel for one thing) and can keep the offense in at least the top 10 with some good additions on defense I see no problem of them going at least 8-8. One last thing I would like to note – they are switching to a 3-4 defense as well which I can’t imagine is necessarily an easy transition especially considering they have no nose tackle and have been drafting defensive ends for a 4-3 formation. Well now actually after writing that – unless Orton is the Broncos version of Cassel or somehow even close to Cutler the Broncos are fucked. No defense. I repeat the Broncos are fucked.
