Chicago Trades Two First Round Picks, Third for Jay Cutler and Fifth Round Pick

That's a lot, but not unreasonable. All made possible by Keary Colbert. Who says history will drop you like so many slippery, slippery footballs?

Chicago moves the 18th pick and probably a pick in the mid-to-late twenties next year to become a title contender. Even after all these years, the Bears have a top ten defense. Matt Forte played pretty well and Chicago's interior offensive line is strong. They added left tackle Chris Williams last season. Wide receiver is still a need, but watch some unknowns take off with Cutler tossing the rock. Earl Bennett anyone?

After slow offseason, I'd say it's a pretty good day to be a Bears fan.

Need proof?

What about Kyle Orton?

He’s less mention-worthy than a 5th rounder?

I think Orton is better than a lot of people give him credit for.

Bears fans seemed to be happy with him before this. The Chicago offense was putrid, but it wasn’t because of him, he had no one to throw the ball to.

It's great to be a Florida Gator!

Orton throwing to Marshall and Royal ...

He’ll put up way better numbers than last year.

by Nick Andron on Apr 3, 2009 7:38 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Chris Simms is already on the Bronco's roster.

My best guess is that Simms will be the starter, and Orton will be the backup, which means they probably won’t take a QB with either 1st rounder. They didn’t ask for Orton in the trade just so he could be their 3rd stringer.

by SeaTownBlueDevil on Apr 2, 2009 5:50 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Call me dumb

but trading #4, a third rounder in 2010, and Hasselbeck sounds like a good trade to me.

Did we just stare success in the eye, and walk away?

It is what it is...

by kidder95 on Apr 2, 2009 3:21 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

How so?

You think that the Bronco’s eye Orton as potential mainstay at the QB position?

by LantermanC on Apr 2, 2009 3:25 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Doesn't have to be, really

He’s super cheap and super young compared to Hasselbeck. Orton could be a couple notches worse than Hasselbeck and still be equally valuable. I think Denver figures they have a lot of talent in place and that Orton has a shot to be pretty good in a New England style system. And if not, shoot, start over.

by John Morgan on Apr 2, 2009 3:27 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Which is to say

The Broncos would not likely accept it. This deal adds two picks first round picks, clears cap space and adds a 26 year old quarterback with some upside.

by John Morgan on Apr 2, 2009 3:25 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Indeed

Well, all we can do is wonder what deal would have made sense.

I would rather see proven value to that of unproven value that costs more. Seem we could have found a way to pair a proven young commodity in a QB to that of our youthful defense.

I congratulate Chicago for having the balls to try and win.

Okay, So Back to the Football

You’re worried about Denver getting Detroit’s pick. It still makes sense for them to trade up and get a QB. What about with the Seahawks? They’re now carrying 12 and 18 in the first round. Is that a fair deal for #4, if Stafford is there? Does Denver pull that deal?

by Communick on Apr 2, 2009 4:42 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Perhaps, but

I like this trade for Denver, in the sense that they felt they had no choice but to trade Cutler. Assuming the #1 option was no longer available — you know, no being gigantic idiots when dealing with Cutler since last season ended, and keeping him in good spirits — then getting two #1’s and change is a really good haul.

They could draft great and suck out loud in 2009, however. Considering that the Patriots traded Cassel for just a second-rounder, this is a big deal. It’s possible both teams benefit from this trade, in the long run.

by J.L. White on Apr 2, 2009 5:45 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Say Denver gets

Malcolm Jenkins and Ray Maualuga in the 1st. Their defense is already drastically better. Then their RBs can stay healthy, and voila, I think 8-8 isn’t too unrealistic of a goal.

by LantermanC on Apr 2, 2009 6:02 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

the Bears paid a lot for Cutler

2 first rounders? But then again, they’ve been needing a good QB for the longest time. With that defense, I could easily see them winning Super Bowl because of this. Who gets the better deal will come down to who the Broncos select with their picks, but this also sets them back a few years to being competitive.

Mayock is saying he thinks Sanchez is perfect for Denver

and with all the picks they have should be trading up to ensure they get him. Unfortunately, if they think Seattle may take him at 4, they’ll be looking to trade to 3. Frankly, I think that’s too high and they won’t do that. IF we trade with Oakland, so they can get to Curry or Crabtree, then we’d be sitting right in front of Jacksonville and might be in a position to trade down with Denver. Likewise, at 12 we might be in position to trade down with Jets at 17 so they can take Freeman in front of the Jets. I’m assuming Tampa Bay will try to jump in front of the Jets, so Jets proactively need to jump to 12 where Tampa doesn’t have the picks (no 2nd rounder) to make that happen. So that’s my new fantasy draft order. Pick up 3 high 3rd round picks from Oakland, Denver and Jets for trading down to 17, then use 2 of those to trade back into another mid 2nd rounder. We wind up with 17, 37, 50’ish, 68 and 71 in the first 3 rounds. That would be a nice start to rebuilding.

Sanchez to Denver makes sense

for various reasons, but I can’t help but wonder if 1) he’ll be there at 18 [you mentioned a trade-up, which I could see], or 2) they might not be content w/ Orton for the next couple of seasons in a win now w/ experience QB mentality?

Just laughable how badly they screwed up a good thing.

SSR's NFL Fun Fact: Andy Reid is the only coach in the league who uses the pass to set up the pass.

This is a good test

Young quarterback traded in his prime. System, surrounding talent or innate ability?

Probably

I’m about five sheets to the wind right now, so it’s amazing I can communicate at all.

by John Morgan on Apr 2, 2009 5:50 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It will be very interesting though, in terms of surrounding offensive talent

Denver is in much better shape then Chicago. It’ll be interesting to see how it unfolds next season.

by B.B.Finnegan on Apr 2, 2009 5:53 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

exactly what I'm thinking

I like Cutler, I really warmed up to the idea of him as a possibility for Seattle. But one reason why is because I thought he’d be switching between similar systems and surrounded by comparable O talent.

That said, I do have some misgivings about the guy, and a nagging suspicion that some of the great #’s he put up in DEN were “hollow”, for lack of a better term.

Seeing him go to the Bears will be a good test of how those numbers translate and just how much a QB elevates the play of those around him or vice versa.

Of course, if he fails the MSM storyline will be because he’s an emo pussy who doesn’t have the machismo to be a leader of men.

by jteckmann on Apr 2, 2009 5:52 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

He excelled in adjusted metrics though

so the hollow numbers argument is pretty hollow itself.

by Nate Dogg on Apr 2, 2009 5:53 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

well then it'll be doubly interesting

now we might also see how well those adjusted metrics meet reality

by B.B.Finnegan on Apr 2, 2009 5:55 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Football is so team dependent

Quarterbacks in their prime are rarely traded, so seeing how Cutler does is interesting if not necessarily definitive.

by John Morgan on Apr 2, 2009 5:56 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wait, so Orton was traded to the Donkeys too?

I knew it.

I just knew it.

It was going to be a Joey Galloway type of trade. Basically two 1st round picks (cut including a third rounder) for Cutler and (and a 5th rounder) .

Ten bucks says he did the "see who's calling, then don't pick up" thing the entire time
Josh McDaniels to reach Cutler for the past 10 days were “unsuccessful.”

10 days goes beyond accidental missed phone calls…

Will McDaniels run a zone blocking scheme like Mike Shanahan did?

I say this because that offense as we all know was based a lot on run – and the ability to just plug and play any old runningback. It was often the reason for Denver’s offensive success, albeit not last year considering the Seahawkesque injuries they sustained at runningback so Cutler had to carry the team. I do not believe Orton is even near Cutler in talent and same with Chris Simms so I would assume a strong running game would be essential to continue their ongoing success. The Broncos would have been nowhere near in the running for a playoff spot if it hadnt been for Cutler carrying the team on his shoulders. The defense was abysmal and with such a garbage defense like that/Orton’s game managing ways it should be important to sustain long drives which of course is done best with a solid running game. Anyways back to my original point. If McDaniels switches it up to a man to man scheme would the runningbacks and more importantly the offensive line be the right personel to run his new scheme? Did he keep the same offensive line coach? What kind of background does offensive coordinator Mike McCoy have? I believe it was LantermanC who said theres a chance of them going 8-8 with the right pickups on defense. I agree. If Josh McDaniels can prove hes really the offensive genius hes been praised to be (grooming Matt Cassel for one thing) and can keep the offense in at least the top 10 with some good additions on defense I see no problem of them going at least 8-8. One last thing I would like to note – they are switching to a 3-4 defense as well which I can’t imagine is necessarily an easy transition especially considering they have no nose tackle and have been drafting defensive ends for a 4-3 formation. Well now actually after writing that – unless Orton is the Broncos version of Cassel or somehow even close to Cutler the Broncos are fucked. No defense. I repeat the Broncos are fucked.
