More Boldin Talk
I'll be brief today as work beckons. According to ESPN via the Baltimore Sun, the Ravens are unlikely to participate in a trade for Anquan Boldin due to both financial reasons and a pick scarcity.
The presumptive asking price for Boldin is going to start around a first and third round pick in this year's draft, or an equivalent package, and the Ravens hold just six total picks this weekend.
With the Ravens potentially out of the race, it could be down to NFC East rivals to bid on Anquan. If you are the GM of a contending team, what price would you pay for Boldin?

Well, assuming trading for Boldin
would require signing him to a ‘FMV’ deal, then I wouldn’t trade too much for him. I never understood trading a lot of undervalued assets (not top 10 picks) for the chance to do something you could normally do in the free agent market for free.
The diference is in the Free Agent market
it’s a different kind of bidding war. You give up picks, you get exclusive rights to the player. You let them hit free agency and it’s you and 30 other teams in a bidding war. Just a different way to play the game. If you’re a team who wants him but doesn’t think they have a legit shot at FA, then maybe you give up some picks.

If the Eagles trade for him,
then end up paying him 80% of Fitz’s contract.
If no one trades for him, and he plays out his contract, his contract will be 80% of Fitz’s contract, no?
Of course, if the Cards are intent on trading him, then whomever he gets traded to will be the only team to sign him to this contract.
So does this mean Philly chose Peters over Boldin?
Or they are more confident in getting a receiver later in the 1st or later rounds than an OT
Let's go.
Probably going to reach on Percy Harvin or Kenny Britt.
Maybe even Brian Robiskie.

They've never shown an interest in drafting receivers high
I’m not sure why they’d be reaching for on this year.
Absolutely nothing higher than a 2nd round pick
Boldin is oft-injured because he plays an extremely physical style of football at the wide receiver position (one of the reasons he is so awesome). We have learned the hard way about giving up 1st round draft picks for “elite” WR talent (though one could definitely argue that Boldin is much better than Branch).

I hear the injury thing,
but he’s only missed 16 games in 6 seasons, which is 83.3% of the time play time. I’ll take those odds. Of course that’s only backwards looking, forward looking would assume more injuries as a player ages (and higher chance of the same injuries happening).
remember when he broke his face?
and then was back in the lineup two weeks later?
dude is hard.
Yes, you're right, I should have put "oft-injured the past few seasons"
The toll of the physicality, one could say. Boldin is an amazing talent, but semi-risky going forward for what he will be able to bring to the table.

I don't think he's a true #1 reciever
and how do you justify giving up a 1st round pick on a receiver who isn’t going to be your #1, no matter how good of a #2 he is?
In retrospect, that was ridiculously awesome rookie season.
I remember watching him rack up like 150 yards (vs. the Lions I think?) and wondering if this guy was even human.

I agree
I don’t think he’d have as much success if Fitzgerald was taking all the heat.

I used to think that way about him
But I think he’s #1 talented, he might not have the breakaway speed, but after actually paying attention to him in games, he’s ridiculous after the catch.
Let's go.

As high as a low 2nd round pick (and maybe some later round sweetner; a 4th maybe) if I was desperate for a receiver and had the picks to give.
I like Bolden, but I can’t help but remember Randy Moss going to New England for a 4th. I’m also not convinced that Bolden is the same player from before his face got kicked in, nor that the Cards are dealing from the position of strength that they’d like to pretend they are – contrary to what they’re selling, I think they want to be rid of him at this point since they do not want to pay him Fitz-money and Bolden’s ego apparently isn’t willing to accept anything less.
Yeah... but BoldIn was great last year.
Moss was horrible when he was traded. He also had character concerns. I suppose Boldin has a few character concerns, but those mainly center around getting paid like a top 10 WR.
And being a #1 WR, which one could easily argue that he is.
But in all seriousness, blame it on Dallas. Those abject morons gave up a first and third for Roy Williams in addition to making him one of the highest paid WRs. Now, Williams is marginally good, but then we have Boldin who’s in a separate tier of much better receivers, so obviously the Cards management want nothing less than that.

I disagree that Moss was horrible.
I agree that his numbers were horrible. I agree that the Raiders were horrible. I never blamed that on Moss and wasn’t the least bit surprised that he’s been what he’s been for the Pats.
Ironically, Boldin wanting to be paid like a top ten WR isn’t too much different from what ran Joey Galloway out of Seattle. Both overestimated their value which can be one of the most annoying “character concerns” even if it’s not one of the more troubling ones.
I loved the trade we made when Galloway was let loose.
But damn, he was a fucking exciting football player. I swear part of my boner for Crabtree comes purely from the loss of Galloway. As much as everyone loved Shaun Alexander, he never brought the excitement to the field I thought Galloway did.
I still get goosebumps when I think of that epic end-around vs... I think it was the Chiefs or Raiders.
