The Panthers are fucking crazy
Proving their faith in Jake Delhomme is unwavering, the Carolina Panthers have given their quarterback a five-year extension worth $42.5 million, according to a source.
And people wonder why the Panthers are so inconsistent.
A place to bury strangers.

Don't want to make a separate fanpost for news, so I'll add to yours:
The Chiefs trade Tony Gonzales for 2010 second round pick.
Man, now I can really see them drafting Michael Crabtree.

20 million guaranteed.
I realized that PIT made many-a-QB look terrible last season, but if I were a Panther’s fan, I’d be severely confused – if not livid. I’m not, so another NFC contender making dumb moves is cause for happyness.

Same.
I can’t think of a single way to rationalize this deal. I don’t understand fair market value sometimes. Would ANYONE ELSE pay Delhomme near this much? Why do teams overpay and outbid themselves all the time (Carlos Silva, I’m looking at you)?

This makes NO sense
whatsoever, what has Jake Delhomme done in the last 3-4 years to justify this contract. Its days like this that I am happy I am not a Panthers fan.

Like a lot of money for a 34 year old QB who was 13th in DYAR last year. Granted that is not bad, but it isn’t great either.

Where else...
Could you’ve just melted down under the most important pressure situation of the last three years for your company only to be rewarded with a huge raise? Delhomme just followed up a mediocre season with one of the classic playoff tank-jobs in the history of sports and he gets A RAISE.
I must concur with the “don’t get it” camp. AND it was the Cardinals, who for all their post season success, were at no point defensively on par with the Steelers.

Actually, I have an answer...
I just got laid off on Tuesday along with 20 other people, but the CEO of the company who has done nothing but fail in the time I’ve been there, makes 500k and didn’t get the boot. We also laid off 25 people earlier this year….
All this because he was the driving force behind spending 42 million dollars to purchase a system to implement for us that didn’t work and we scrapped…
Anyway… such is life!

Sorry dude.
Makes no sense to me. Why lay off cogs in a company, yet not punish the head of the company who is leading it down the wrong direction? The engine parts can work as effectively as possible, but if the driver is an idiot, the car will still crash. I personally would have a hard time justifying my salary as a CEO unless the company were wildly successful, and I certainly would cut my own salary down in order to reduce layoffs. I guess that’s why I’m not a CEO (besides my age). The whole thing pisses me off, frankly, and I’d have a bigger rant about it, but this is a Seahawks’ website, so I’ll refrain.

I did the math, you could have kept 12 people on with my salary for the cost of his… though i’m not sure if he got bonuses or not that could have pushed him higher.
Anyway… go Hawks, eh?

Without knowing what Delhomme's contract was before, my guess is this was actually a needed move.
Lots of times these extensions are structured for cap relief. It probably lowers his cap # for this year, or wipes out big salaries that were due to him in future years. Maybe it’s structured in ways that make it easier for them to cut him in 1-2 years. He’s probably not getting a raise, but rather swapping out future salary for bonus money up front.
But I highly doubt the Panthers were thinking they were committing to him for 4-5 years as a starter because of this extension.
by jteckmann on Apr 23, 2009 2:11 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Exactly.
He’ll retire long before this contract is up, and this contract probably makes him cheaper the first couple of years.
John’s right, too, Jake has been a pretty consistent player in his time there, and he’s a fan favourite.

You got me there!
I’ve always liked Jake for some reason… seems to me as long as he’s been at Carolina they’ve been an underground threat. Yep, I know they’ve always had the defense, but (at least up until last year) it felt to me like the team liked him and was always wanting to win with him at the helm.
He certainly has played some bad games in the playoffs, but he’s been in a few too.
by djafrot on Apr 23, 2009 6:37 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Jakes success has always come down to.....
Extremely efficient/standout Rbs (Stephen Davis/DeAngelo Williams/Jonathan Stewart) / Steven Smith and solid defense, oh and some guy named John Kasey. Jake can’t carry a team on his own or even keep them competitive on his own. Plus hes fragile, can’t throw the deep ball, can’t throw the short or intermediate ball. Slightly less mobile than Drew Bledsoe, in Bledsoe’s last year in the league. Is a threat to fumble every time somebody so much as grazes his jersey. Oh and Ma’ake Keamatue who is considered extremely non mobile is much faster than Jake ever was. Jakes idea of throwing a pass is chucking the ball in the general area (Downfield/In the stadium) of Smith. To put it nicely after being a Panthers fan and watching him for several years from the Super Bowl year to this year Its easy to realize that he is not a good starter. He is not qualified to be a highschool Football player/Professional Athlete quarterback. Another reason why I no longer am a Panthers fan, actually hes the only reason. But as a Seahawks fan, he did help us get to the Super Bowl. Its the only thing hes ever done right, and even then he did it for the wrong team. But he is a nice guy, he always makes sure the other teams defense gets to catch at least one ball per game and gets to go further in the playoffs

Oh and for those people saying
This will allow the Panthers to keep Jake Delhomme until he retires and he could help mentor a young QB. I sure as hell don’t want Jake Delhomme anywhere near my young QBs. I’d rather have Ryan Smith and Akili Smith mentoring my young QB.

No, he isn't.
In the regular season he’s probably a top 20 QB, if not top 15. Again, not great, but in a league where QB talent is as scarce as water in a desert, he’s at least serviceable, which is a far better QB situation that many other teams.

So what are you saying?
It’s obvious the Panthers should be looking to the future but they can’t trust a random QB FA like Rex Grossman or JustPunt Losman to even do the playaction or simple passes that the Panthers’ offense requires. At least Delhomme was competent enough to throw that gamewinning TD vs. San Diego early in the season.

Well, the options aren't
Delhomme for $40 mill or new QB
Why not Delhomme for $25 million? It seems like they’re jut overbidding or outbidding themselves. Who knows, maybe a team like Minnesota would like to sign him, but I highly doubt it.

Rex Grossman was competent enough to get to the Super Bowl
Trent Dilfer was competent enough to win the Super Bowl. They were average to below-average quarterbacks.

With some epic defenses.
And Grossman has regressed from “Good Grossman/Bad Grossman” to just “Bad Grossman”. Dilfer was terrible even the Super Bowl season so you can’t fault the Ravens for releasing him.
Delhomme is far better than either anyway so I don’t see your point.

My point is that your argument that Delhomme was competent enough to throw one TD
doesn’t hold up. Great, he was competent to lead a game-winning drive. Fantastic. So have a lot of other mediocre quarterbacks (like Grossman or Dilfer). Other mediocre quarterbacks win games. My point was that you were cherry-picking. I could also easily say that Delhomme was incompetent enough to throw 5 INTs at HOME against Arizona in the playoffs to single-handedly lose that game. My point is that this contract, with this amount of money, at this point in Delhomme’s career, is ridiculous. The Panthers should not be spending that type of coin on someone who is an average QB while throwing to Steve Smith. Football Outsiders DYAR has him 13th, behind Schaub and just in front of David Garrard, who had no offensive line and no wide receivers. The next guy is Kerry Collins. Basically, Delhomme is in the wonderful gooey middle of NFL quarterbacks, with age regression a-coming….

Delhomme was going to count for over 10 mil against the cap this year
They probably realised that nobody was going to give them a 1st rounder for Peppers so needed to do something drastic to free up some cap space? I’m not saying it’s not utterly ridiculous money, how much of it is guaranteed though. They must be praying he fancies an early retirement!

true. But $20M over 5 years cuts his current cap # in half
From over $10M to down around $4-$5M.
And with him being a FA after this year, they were facing a decision. At least this way they can hang onto him for a couple more years at a much more reasonable cap charge while still looking for their next QB. Sure, when they have to cut him in 2 years they’ll have to eat about $12M in dead space, but split over 2 years that’s not crippling. It’s basically the same thing our FO did with Shaun Alexander.
It’s 2 different ways of handling the same situation – Carolina’s basically putting Delhomme on credit, while Seattle’s paying up front to let Hass finish out his deal – but I can see the logic behind both.

We don’t know how they spread out the 20 million guaranteed.

by Scruffy Lefty on Apr 24, 2009 1:20 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
The guaranteed (bonus) is what really matters for the cap #
And it gets prorated evenly over the life of the deal. So $20M/5yr = $4M per year against the cap, then add whatever his scheduled salary is for that year. Once he’s cut, the remaining bonus accelerates against the cap but the salary’s off the books.
If the extensions structured like most, it’s probably close to minimum salaries the first couple years, and then the rest of the “$42M” is in the form of insanely backloaded salaries and roster bonuses – money he’ll never see.
by jteckmann on Apr 24, 2009 1:30 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Sorry I wasn't clear. Battling a cold.
I understand that he won’t see the total amount. But we don’t know if they are evenly spreading the bonus over the 5yrs.
But it does sound like they’re only saving themselves 2 million of cap space this year.
