Around SBN: NFL Roundtable: Which Draft Pick Is Most Likely To Bust?

Some Pre-Draft Reading Material

Here are a few interesting pieces that you may want to read before the draft starts tomorrow:

In case you haven't read The Blind Side, here is a USA Today piece on Michael Oher.

The Hawks are apparently getting a few calls regarding the #4 pick.

Do you live in a cave? If so, you'll be delighted to find out that the Falcons traded for Tony Gonzalez. I'm impressed that you get wireless in Lascaux.

The Madden '10 cover is out. I'm still disappointed that Olindo Mare isn't the coverboy.

Finally, draft coverage. The first pick in the draft will be made at roughly 1pm Pacific.  Pre-draft coverage will start at approximately February. If you feel like being shouted at by Chris Berman for multiple hours, ESPN will officially start the hype machine up at 7am Pacific.

7 AM Pacific?

That’s how I want to wake up in the morning.

Truer words have never been spoken

If the draft was another month away, or something, I think I’d go nuts.

I only watch 5 minutes of ESPN every day

and that’s when I’m eating my cereal and getting dressed, so I’m not burned out from watching draft coverage on tv. Kind of burned out from reading stuff and watching youtube highlights though.

I have watched little to no ESPN in the past year, but I am collectively tired of their hype.

Anything that can turn the actual playing of the Superbowl into an afterthought is remarkably lousy.

That's not to say that ESPN is bad. I just loathe the pre- and post-event continuous news cycle

that leads to every possible angle getting [must avoid rape metaphors] thoroughly overplayed to the point that I’m almost relieved when the event is over. I don’t like that I feel that way, as the entire point is to enjoy the game / draft itself. Fortunately for me, I don’t buzz through a lot of articles every day looking for something Hawks / draft related for some blog.

In college, I'd watch Cold Pizza twice,

then sports center, then Rome, Around the Horn, then PTI, then Around the Horn and PTI again on ESPN2, all while doing hw of course. Man were those good times (not because of the tv watching, just the amount of free time I had sometimes).

Oher's piece

gave me goosebumps. I mean, damn…

I hope Denvers interest in Sanchez is real.

The 12 and 18 pick would be nice.

Nice? Or make my NFL-offseason totally awesome?

If Jenkins fell to 12 it’d be doubly sweet. I can’t even imagine who we’d get with the 18th pick… None of the USC LBs I hope. Britton, Browne, or Beanie Wells/Moreno? Shoot I’d even reach for Michael Johnson, that’s how much JM’s post influenced me.

by LantermanC on Apr 24, 2009 9:58 AM PDT up reply actions

If the Broncos traded with the Seahawks, I'd go for Oher and Moreno, if both of them are available.

Though if Jenkins is on the board, I’d seriously consider getting him, too.

Weez the juice!!

I'm not so big on the middle of the 1st

But it seems to me like the end of the 1st is pretty interesting.

Maybe if we had the 18th we could trade down to the mid-late first and pick up extra picks. Remember Washington trading a “next year’s first” to move up into the first from the second to get Campbell?

I find the Sanchez interest to be the most intriguing Hawks storyline for the draft.

Now that there are several teams with a good bit of supposed interest, the Hawks may be sitting pretty if, you know, all the rumors mean anything. Because Seattle is actually a threat to take Sanchez and none of the top 3 are (assuming that Stafford goes), I can not WAIT to see what happens.

by abender20 on Apr 24, 2009 11:12 AM PDT up reply actions

right on

I know trade downs out of the top 5 are especially rare. But I always suspected the availability of the elusive “franchise QB” offered the glimmer of hope we could do it. I just always figured it’d have to be Stafford, and there was no hope of him slipping to our range. I’m completely stunned that Sanchez has become the belle of the ball and could make it a reality..

I know you're joking, but no they won't.

If they both have a 60% chance of success, then the chances of both busting is 16%, so the chance of a success is 84%, which isn’t much more than 60%.

Man, that piece on Oher was touching.

Yeah, nothing really new if you've read the book

Other than Oher has finally read it, apparently.

I found it interesting that he bristled at the supposed knocks on his intelligence. When I read it originally, it seemed like an endorsement of the kid’s brain as much as anything else. It describes how he was in developmental circumstances (i.e. never going to school) where he just wasn’t required to exercise his brain and learn “classroom stuff” that other kids take for granted. But when he did finally get into school and pick up some momentum, he really began to flourish.

The conventional wisdom was that IQ is inherent, for example, and yeah, at first he tested very low. But once he started getting actual schooling and tutoring and everything, his IQ “magically” jumped up over 100, which isn’t supposed to happen. Besides the football stuff, I found it to be a fascinating case study of overcoming near-impossible environmental conditions. Unfortunately, not every kid in poverty is a 300-pound left tackle prospect. Lewis makes sure to point out that for every Michael Oher success story, there are thousands of kids who never get the chance to get out.

Ah, I’m rambling. I guess I’ll just say that I highly recommend the book.

I haven't read it, actually.

But if it’s as good as everyone says it is, I have to get on it.

Finally, draft coverage. The first pick in the draft will be made at roughly 1pm Pacific.

That’s good. Those 10am start times can be devastating to a team’s draft.

Ha.

But Goddammit, we have an early pick and waiting until 2:00 for it to happen is going to be painful.
