Aaron Curry? It's an A+
Obviously, I could not possibly be any happier about this pick. When you're interviewing people, you're supposed to be objective. Usually, it's pretty easy. But when I interviewed Curry for this two-parter (here and here), I was ready to break into the VMAC and draft him myself. There is nobody with a better mixture of talent, versatility, and character in this draft class. He will blast the backside in running plays, can edge-rush in 3-4 sets (he did it at Wake once in a while), can diagnose a screen and cover a tight end. He has come up from some really hard times and all it's done is toughen him up. I've made the Derrick Brooks comparison before, and I think it stands. This is a special, special player who won't just do amazing things on the field -- he'll perpetuate the "character-first" idea that the Seahawks put forth.
Curry is a high-ceiling guy, which makes him different than other "safe picks" Ruskell has made in the past. Beyond that, I'm gonna need a while before I can really be analytical about this. This is a great person who is getting what he deserves, and he will bust his mortal ass to make sure the Seahawks get a guy who's worth every penny of what they're about to pay him.
I'm off to sing the "Happy Happy Joy Joy" song now...

Thanks to ye gods we drafted Curry over Sanchez.
If Stafford had fallen to four, it would’ve been much harder for me.

I could not agree with you more
I am ecstatic right now.

Wow...
I’m really at a loss for words right now. I’m just… completely thrilled. (Not to mention hoping that SF doesn’t pick Michael Crabtree… a situation which is looking much more probable by the minute, unfortunately.)

Good call, Doug.
I’m not disappointed at all with the pick, even if he wasn’t my first choice. But like Nate, I like the pick even more knowing how happy it makes you.

I'm gonna take yours and John's word on it for this one.
For me, like someone else said, it’s a little like running in place having just let JP go for not much.
This kid better be really, really freaking good and not just “OK”.

Hate this pick
Don’t want to rehash all the reasons, but my essential feeling is that Curry will at most make this team 1% better and won’t “impact” this defense even if he plays well.

kearly... It's the other stuff Curry allows us to do that makes this pick.
Even if Curry is a lateral move, not being hamstrung by Hill’s F-tag is worth it’s weight in gold (8+ million in gold to be exact). Our ability to now go out and get other pieces of the puzzle looms large.
Secondly, Julian graded out last year as one of the least assignment correct of all our defenders. By most counts Curry may not be edge rusher Peterson was at times, but he certainly isn’t the classic over-pursuer either.

I like this pick, especially when considering the loss of Julian Peterson

kinda the problem with it.
We could have just kept JP and used this pick for something else.

Yeah.
We didn’t technically ‘gain’ anything.

Except for Julian Peterson
who we hadn’t had for a year. And now we have him for an undetermined time, in the form of Leroy Hill, depending on the contract he eventually signs. And in place of Leroy Hill, a guy who is Hill plus can cover very well. I don’t care what anyone says, we’re really going to just run a Tampa 2 system and this is our Derrick Brooks.
And then we picked up Cory Redding and a 5th round pick. So overall, nothing to criticize. I don’t think it’s a bad pick at all, I am only underwhelmed at not getting Sanchez or Crabtree, but I realize they’re risky. Not nearly as thrilling as getting Crabtree would have been, AND now I have to worry about him being the next TO with SanFran, but as underwhelming as it is, I couldn’t possibly say we just got JP back, because JP 2007 is long gone.

sure we did....
we gained 8 years at less money. Don’t think that’s big?

One of those rare, high-talent picks.
Curry is one of those rare defensive players that will make you go “ooohhhhh” with his ability. It reminds me of when we picked Easley (1981, 4th overall) and Tez (1990, 3rd overall.)
I’m gonna love this guy. Can the season start now? Please?
I vow to never post a cartoon picture of spurting diarrhea on a credible blog.
