Field Gulls Podcast: Doug Farrar and John Morgan Talk About Seattle's First Day and Preview Picks Seattle Could Take Tomorrow

Doug Farrar talks about how this draft has helped save his faith in Tim Ruskell. He explains what he likes about Curry as a player and as a person, and describes Curry as a "cruise missle" that's deadly five yards in any direction. I talk about Max Unger's versatility and fit in a zone blocking system, and how he could cover for whoever of Mansfield Wrotto, Chris Spencer or Rob Sims that doesn't develop. Doug and I agree that trading Seattle's early second pick for the Broncos' 2010 first round pick is a steal and could put Seattle in the running for Sam Bradford.

Haven't had a chance to listen yet

you guys are awesome

that needs to be repeated

It went really well.

Doug and I had no preparation and just winged it, but it’s pretty smooth and Doug especially has some great insight.

No scripted Q's at all??

Came off nice.

Honestly

All of Doug and I’s correspondence has been online. It’s the first time we’ve actually talked to each other. How sad and modern is that?

Comes off very organic...

Some good chemistry there.

We might do one tomorrow

depending on how burnt out we are.

With all the work you've poured into FG for the draft

I do hope you plan on taking a little bit of time off to spend some time your better half. Lord knows you’ve earned a bit of a break.

Everyones loving this draft for Seattle

I’ve looked at a couple sites and they’ve all rated us very highly. We’ve picked up a first next year and two players that we could use right away. They already released the madden ratings on the first two rounds, i know they don’t mean anything but they’re worth mentioning for fun. Curry is 85 and the highest rated player of the rookies. The second highest were Crabtree and Jason Smith at 84. Unger was one of the three players who the guy hasn’t got around to rating yet for whatever reason.

Anyone watching NFL Network

Michael Steffes of Seahawks Addicts says Seattle has withdrawn the franchise tag. He heard this via NFL Network.

by iverson2169 on Apr 25, 2009 8:43 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

who ho ho

Leroy, yikes.

So…..we have a franchise-tag sized increase in our salary cap…..what’s going on next?

by Will Kier on Apr 25, 2009 8:44 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

for what it's worth (I KNOW)

there’s a poster on seahawks.net directly citing the NFL network

that’s all I’ve seen so far

by Will Kier on Apr 25, 2009 8:51 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

And Seattle could just be removing the tag

because they plan on signing him long term. I’m not moving on this until I know exactly what is happening. Better to be accurate than first.

by John Morgan on Apr 25, 2009 8:52 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Would make sense.

What would be the point of not signing him? It’s not as if there is another FA this year who we can sign.

by LantermanC on Apr 25, 2009 8:53 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

A guy like Derrick Brooks...

although completely speculative, would make sense. Even at 35 remains he quintessential cover 2 WSLB (and cheap). Also has ties to Ruskell

Bring Your Game, Leave Your Name.

by iverson2169 on Apr 25, 2009 8:55 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Only 35? It seems like he's been around forever.

But again, we still need one LB who pass rushes. Unless we think we’ll be getting a lot of pressure from our front four. Which I don’t see unless we get a big step forward from LoJack and a healthy season from Kerney.

by LantermanC on Apr 25, 2009 8:57 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Indeed.

Definitely will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

by BrianL on Apr 25, 2009 8:56 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I saw it on NFL network as well first read about it on the ESPN board didn’t believe it but the TV was on in my bedroom on NFL network I rewound the TIVO and sure enough that is what they said.

by A'Seahawks_Warriors on Apr 25, 2009 9:05 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I just got a reply from Sando

Here’s what he said:

Lombardi supposedly brought it up as an option. It is an option. Probably more talk at this point. If it helps them get a deal, it could come into play.

It doesn’t look like anything imminent. Just overblown BS right now.

by John Morgan on Apr 25, 2009 9:07 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

John

Sorry for the copy paste didn’t know about the rule.

The are not reporting it as a a rumor on NFL network as of about 30 minutes ago Lombardi said that they had removed his tag.

I hope he’s wrong just telling you what I saw.

by A'Seahawks_Warriors on Apr 25, 2009 9:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's fine

Just important that we don’t copy and paste and that we do source. People work for this stuff and deserve the rewards.

As for the report, if Lombardi said it as fact thirty minutes ago, no one else has heard about it. I would be amazed to see this slip past Sando, much less everyone else.

by John Morgan on Apr 25, 2009 9:11 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would probably trust Sando more than some random guy on NLFN.

I’m reserving judgment until we get an official word one way or the other.

Is that the light at the end of the tunnel, or the headlights of an oncoming train?

by Benne on Apr 25, 2009 9:30 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I always put in the link too just slipped I got to excited about the news.

I see what you are saying I would think Hill could at least bring the third and fourth tomorrow that we traded to the Bears today.

If Lombardi is just making stuff up I hope they can him I don’t care for what he brings to NFL network anyways.

by A'Seahawks_Warriors on Apr 25, 2009 9:14 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Sando also points out leverage

that Hill loses by Seattle drafting Curry. Good point.

I wonder if this is happening right now because they’re ready to trade him for say a 3rd rounder and a player like a backup tackle, or a project safety or end. This was when the Darrell Jackson trade went down.

by jacobstevens on Apr 25, 2009 9:41 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

That is, if it seems unlikely they can agree

on a long term contract. I’m sure they’re still trying.

by jacobstevens on Apr 25, 2009 9:44 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

They can't trade him

because he’s not signed.

by John Morgan on Apr 25, 2009 9:44 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Franchise = Two 1sts as Return Value

if someone else signs him, which is obviously prohibitive, but an essential trade can occur by finding a team that can agree to terms with him, and with us in compensation, less than two 1sts but something good. Hasn’t this happened in the past?

by jacobstevens on Apr 25, 2009 10:01 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not necessarily. That's the intended compensation....

But Matt Cassell was traded for much less, just this year’s 2nd round pick.

Anyways, as was said, Leroy Hill can’t be traded unless he signs the tender, which he hasn’t. I’m not 100% certain about that, but I feel pretty close to it.

Weez the juice!!

by Carl Shinyama on Apr 25, 2009 10:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Right

That’s what I was thinking, a trade that allows Hill to get money Seattle wouldn’t give, another team a player they wouldn’t give 2 firsts for — which they’d be forced to do if they agreed to terms with Hill, without the Hawks involved. And Seattle would get something.

by jacobstevens on Apr 25, 2009 10:15 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

At this point, if we're talking about this year's draft.

And assuming that Hill signs the tender, therefore making him a trading commodity, Seattle can’t get anything higher than a 3rd, which would mean that if they want more valuable draft picks, they’d need a team to give up one of their picks next year.

Doubt it would happen though, given how deep this year’s LB class is.

Weez the juice!!

by Carl Shinyama on Apr 25, 2009 10:21 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'd be happy with the third and fourth

That we sent to the Bears for Hill let Hathorn and Lewis battle for that spot.

Question on Mike Reilly....

Since we have two second round picks, wouldn’t it make it less likely for us to draft a QB? Next year we’ll have a good chance at Bradford, McCoy, Tebow, or even Jevan Snead (no clue as to who he is, but I was browsing 2010 mocks, and he’s there before McCoy at Walterfootball).

by LantermanC on Apr 25, 2009 10:07 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Not to oversimplify

but if Seattle thinks he’s a good player, they will sign him. Seattle could use its future first round picks on a quarterback, but do not have to, and if they draft Reilly and he develops well, they could instead pick up other players.

Just watched some Youtube Highlights

of Aaron Curry. This guy looks rediculously good. He makes his 4.5something 40 time look slow, I thought I was watching a DB.

But, more than his speed, he looks SO fundamental. Every hit was square in the middle of someone’s body, the lines he took looked perfect, his closing speed, his agility, his pass rushing. He looks like Polamalu. When he was lined up on the LOS opposite a TE or an OT, he was reading the play, putting the player on his shoulder and defeating the block. When he was back, he stood there, read the play and put on the burst. Or when he was covering a different player and the ball was thrown, his change of direction and closing burst was unreal. There were plays he made that made my friend and I yell out loud, as if we were watching live.

The title “heat-seeking missile” has been thrown around. Watch him, that’s exactly what it looks like. But more impressive to me is the fact that he looks like a tackling machine. When I watched any of our LBs, three above-average to pro bowl guys, I saw athleticism and great tackling at times, and reaching and missed tackles at other times. Curry kept his feet moving during plays that I was sure he was in the middle of a dive and grasp, finishing plays like I never saw last season.

He looks like an upgrade from Julian Peterson, like he has Peterson’s athleticism, more size, and way WAY more discipline. Is it just highlights that are getting me pumped up, or could we be watching the one of the best LBs the NFL has ever seen next year?

Excellent recap of the day and preview for tomorrow, John and Doug.

Shame the Leroy news didn’t come out sooner, would have been great to get both of your reactions.
