NFL Draft Live Blog IV

Seattle may not pick again for a couple hours, but that doesn't mean there isn't interest. For one, there's a certain running back I've crowed about still out there. And if you're not cool with Cedric Peerman, everyone can get behind Mike Reilly--but does he fall?

7:07: This is one of the most exciting picks of the draft. The new number one. The Jets are trading up. The NFL Network is speculating that they're targeting a running back.

7:10: Rex Ryan is locking in on his guys. Rex Ryan thinks he can turn Vernan Gholston into an All-Pro. I think Rex Ryan will have a very short career.

7:11: It is a running back. Beyond a small group of elite backs, or value picks, I wouldn't touch this running back class. Shonn Green is a player that could have fallen into the sixth last season.

7:15: Rams select Bradley Fletcher. I think Steve Spagnuolo believes he can assemble an elite pass rush, and that a player like Fletcher, who Mayock refers to as a "height, weight, speed guy", will hold his own against the shorter clock.

7:21: Chiefs select Alex Magee. He's a high potential guy I think Seattle was targeting. So we can cross him off. Defensive tackle is not a pressing need, but Seattle did need some youth behind Mebane and Red Bryant.

7:22: If Hill is gone, and I think it's safe to say Hill is, Seattle will probably look for a cover style replacement. It's worth noting that if Seattle was going true Tampa 2, Hill would be playing a lot of short cover and Hill struggles at that. Seattle has Herring and Hawthorne, who could rotate depending on down, but I would love to see the team target Jonathan Casillas should he fall.

7:28: With one of the picks Seattle traded to move up to draft Max Unger, the Chicago Bears select pool jumper Jarron Gilbert. Gilbert looks like a valuable sub at both tackle spots. I do worry about defensive tackles from small schools. That's a pure matchup position, and Gilbert truly hasn't faced anything like he will face in the NFL. He might not be able to hack, or he just might not want to hack it. It's about to get hard and painful.

7:35: Not sure one can be a prolific athlete. Maybe Travis Henry. Michael Johnson either makes sense being drafted by the Bengals, or is about to fail in really public and shameful fashion. Not the kind of clubhouse a young guy develops in.

7:48: Glen Coffee is gone. Lame joke makers weep.

7:56: A lot of people are discounting the players the Jets traded away. But let's look at the less spoken of part and figure these three player's value.

DE Kenyon Coleman: Coleman is a journeyman 3-4 end that's a about league average. I would guess he's about the mean output of a third round pick. He's under contract through 2011.

QB Brett Ratliff: One year starter at Utah. Prototypical build. Had a great preseason in 2008.

S Abram Elam: Organizational depth safety, in his prime, that will mostly contribute on special teams.

Not a ton of value, really. Coleman is a good player to add to a team in need of D-line depth, but this trade really turns on Ratliff. As far as franchise crippling trades go, this one is underwhelming. If Mark Sanchez is any good at all, you have to say it was a good trade for the Jets.

8:05: I'm dying to know what's wrong with Duke Robinson.

8:06: Wow, there's a telling comment from Gruden. He doesn't understand how they could be bashing the Steelers' offensive line. Gruden keeps insisting that they are the World Champions. As if that title makes their every unit elite. When we say winning cures all ills, we don't mean this.

8:14: Man they are ripping Gruden. Must be strange to go from top of your profession to being ripped like a rookie. Gruden seems to be taking it in stride and acting classy, but you can tell he hates it.

8:16: The Lions are stocking talent on offense. I guess they are trying to protect Stafford and hope everyone develops together. One problem, they haven't added anyone to their offensive line.

8:22: I agree with Rich Eisen. New England takes Tate. Tate is the kind of pick that falls to the third. A lot of talent, but serious concerns. Just because New England did it doesn't mean it's brilliant.

8:28: Hamlin is still out there. It would be a miracle if he fell to Seattle, but you never know. Bruton is still floating around and would make an interesting developmental pick. I think it's very likely he's selected in the next 50 picks.

8:31: Not surprised to see Turner in the third. For all the talk about Stafford having great talent around him, I think Sanchez had even better.

8:34: You know, I like Marshall Faulk. Occasional dumb comments aside, he offers some interesting insight.

8:38: Good on Mayock. First he admits he didn't see film on Michael Mitchell and now he's admitting that if he was going to be gone by the Bears' pick, that it's justifiable that Oakland selected him. Classy, and more than that, confident move by Mayock.

8:43: Bill Belichick is playing chess with a bunch of checkers players. And with that, New England turns a third round pick in a weak draft into a second round pick in the 2010 draft.

9:58: Seattle has mostly taken itself out of this draft. I've been on board with most picks, but Butler looks like the token blocker/speed back Greg Knapp seems to get on his offenses. Maybe this one will work out.

12:13: One thing this draft confirms is that mock drafts and player rankings are utterly ridiculous after the first three rounds.

12:14: Feneki Tupou to the Eagles. He could be one of the Eagles giant interior linemen, but I don't see him at tackle, even right tackle.

12:18: With Washington burning bridges with Jason Campbell and Seattle looking to be in good cap shape next year, don't be at all surprised if the guy that was passing to Courtney Taylor and Ben Obomanu is a Seahawk next year.

3:39: The live blog kind of petered out as I started working on other projects. Draft coverage won't end today. Tomorrow we start scouting the picks. Starting with either Unger or Curry.

Good morning

Hey, let’s draft a LB to replace the starter we might let walk away…

by lemonverbena on Apr 26, 2009 7:01 AM PDT reply actions

Makes sense

Johnson is the kind of guy that’s all upside right now. The perfect third round pick. I think he will be drafted very soon.

by John Morgan on Apr 26, 2009 7:32 AM PDT up reply actions

Yup, just drafted by Bengals

They might’ve gotten a steal here. It’s looking good for the Bengals.

by aerozeppelin on Apr 26, 2009 7:35 AM PDT up reply actions

And Johnson just got picked as that was stated

I would hardly call San Jose State a “small” school. It’s not Humboldt State. Just last year they played Nebraska and Stanford. They play Boise every year. I acknowledge it isn’t the SEC or Pac-10, but they’ve played some teams.

by DoubleB on Apr 26, 2009 7:36 AM PDT reply actions

Stanford is bad

and Nebraska crushed them, pretty much shutting down Gilbert.

by John Morgan on Apr 26, 2009 7:40 AM PDT up reply actions

No

I suppose he could have excelled, but he had one tackle for a loss of two and no pressures.

by John Morgan on Apr 26, 2009 8:00 AM PDT up reply actions

Perhaps he got into the backfield several times and scared the RB or QB

into the arms of a teammate… Anything’s poss i buuuuuuuuullllll.

by LantermanC on Apr 26, 2009 8:02 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah,

I should read 100% of what people write, not just the first 80%.

by LantermanC on Apr 26, 2009 8:06 AM PDT up reply actions

That's not the point

It’s one game of 2 statistics (tackles and sacks/pressures). Without watching the actual game it’s hard to tell what happened. Hell, maybe he got hurt after the 1st quarter and didn’t play.

I could point out that he had 9 tackles with 2 sacks against an undefeated Boise team and state he should have been a 1st round pick. I’d be wrong.

by DoubleB on Apr 26, 2009 8:07 AM PDT up reply actions

Fair enough

I’m not arguing that one game is sufficient evidence to determine his value, but you said he played Stanford and Nebraska and that means he’s faced top talent, and my only point was that it’s not enough to face top talent, but to play well against top talent. And though I don’t know if Gilbert did play well, I don’t see evidence that he did.

by John Morgan on Apr 26, 2009 8:12 AM PDT up reply actions

Actually

my response was to you stating that he played at a “small school.” I don’t put San Jose State, a WAC school, in the same category as FCS or lower division schools. He’s played against guys that will be on pro rosters. If he had played at Humboldt or Central Washington then I could see your point.

Second, he clearly played well against Boise State last year, which while not a BCS school, was probably the best team on his schedule.

by DoubleB on Apr 26, 2009 8:16 AM PDT up reply actions

Of course

I didn’t say anything like this

I don’t put San Jose State, a WAC school, in the same category as FCS or lower division schools.

We can debate the semantics of a small school, but I think it’s futile. San Jose State is small school compared to most BCS schools. It’s not as small as some. Gilbert faces a larger adjustment than a player that played at a larger BCS school.

by John Morgan on Apr 26, 2009 8:21 AM PDT up reply actions

“Gilbert faces a larger adjustment than a player that played at a larger BCS school.”

The real argument is the size of that adjustment. I don’t think it’s much larger relative to BCS schools compared to non-BCS FBS schools.

by DoubleB on Apr 26, 2009 8:30 AM PDT up reply actions

Can't believe Johnson fell that far..

This guy was top 5 just a few months ago, and had an All-ACC performance this year. Way to go Cincy,

by michaelfox99 on Apr 26, 2009 7:43 AM PDT reply actions

SAFETY!!!!!!

David Bruton, Notre Dame, size speed. smarts, perfect Ruskell guy. Would not be a reach at 5th round.

by walruz on Apr 26, 2009 8:07 AM PDT reply actions

For a second there, I thought he was gone...

He wouldn’t be a reach since many expect him to go in the 4th… Especially after that impressive combine. Shoot, we might have to trade up to get him. Let’s hope either him or Hamlin is still available by the time we pick.

by LantermanC on Apr 26, 2009 8:09 AM PDT up reply actions

Man...

Mad run at WRs.

Some of these really feel like they’re reaching, to be honest. Tate should’ve been available later. Wallaca makes sense in Pittsburgh, tho’, and I think the Lions good got value in Williams, but honestly, I think this whole WR class is a bit overrated.

by Thomas Beekers on Apr 26, 2009 8:28 AM PDT reply actions

WR run apparently,

4 in a row, and Barden to the Giants, so if Nicks doesn’t pan out, maybe he can be their Plaxico?

by LantermanC on Apr 26, 2009 8:28 AM PDT reply actions

Shoot, I forgot to ask this question, and this is probably the wrong thread

but if Raji is going to be a bust, and he dominated Unger, does that cause some concern for us?

by LantermanC on Apr 26, 2009 8:35 AM PDT reply actions

Raji's kind of a positional bust

He’s got great burst and athleticism, and in plays where he’s asked to operate as a one-gap DT (not sure if that’s the case we’re talking about, tho’) he’s top-level and can dominate the best line prospects in this draft.

It’s just that GB needs a heavy, strong-armed, big nose tackle, and Raji isn’t that.

by Thomas Beekers on Apr 26, 2009 8:37 AM PDT up reply actions

He dominated one-on-one drills

you would expect him to. Unger will combo block guys like Raji.

by John Morgan on Apr 26, 2009 8:38 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't trust Scouts Inc. much,

but how did Ladarius Webb from Nichols State with a grade of 59 just get drafted when DJ Moore from Vandy with a grade of 87 still on the board?

Curious if the

run on WRs had an impact on their decision.

by DoubleB on Apr 26, 2009 8:51 AM PDT up reply actions

This is why I don't like 'targeting one guy'

Because if they were indifferent between Iglesias, Mike Thomas, Butler, and Hamlin, they would’ve waited a bit longer or traded a bit less.

by LantermanC on Apr 26, 2009 8:53 AM PDT up reply actions

Well

maybe they weren’t targeting Butler, but he was the highest WR on their board by a large margin at this stage.

by DoubleB on Apr 26, 2009 8:55 AM PDT up reply actions

I wouldn't necessarily say pricey.

Only from the standpoint that a 5th/7th rounder generally don’t make teams, and Ruskell’s been pretty blunt that he feels we don’t have as many holes. I don’t know what the point total comes out to in the draft slotting scheme, but it probably isn’t too much of an overpay.

I would assume if we really want that pick next year, we’ll trade down from one of our 1st rounders to get it (unless we use both to trade for a franchise QB).

scouts inc on Butler

not super-encouraging…

Butler has excellent top-end speed, adequate size and adequate-to-good ball skills. We also like the way he competes for the ball and is willing to throw his body around as a blocker. But he isn’t big enough or strong enough to be an effective NFL blocker at this point. In addition, his speed is a bit overrated. He doesn?t look as fast on film as he is on the track.

I'm surprised we picked another WR

given our depth on the roster, while we have needs at DB and RB. I keep saying the same thing, and I know some of you are comfortable with our RB situation, but I still don’t get it. I thought we’d target Reilly in the 6th, but maybe with limited interest from other teams they feel he’ll be there for a compensatory 7th rounder, because I still think we need a RB and not sure what will be available in the 6th. Maybe Ringer???

The biggest surprise for me is that

Seattle seem happy going into next year with their secondary as it is. I was expecting a safety, and / or maybe a corner. The judgement on last year’s defense from management and coaches must be that the DL were to blame, hence Cole and Redding and no new secondary players.

You know, I hate to sound negative, BUT

I’m a bit worried about 2009. What have we done to improve over 2008? Housh, Redding, Cole. Re-signing Willis doesn’t count. No changes yet at DB, RB, QB. If Hass goes down, we have Seneca, period. If JJ goes down we have Ducket, who got 4 carries per game last year with 2.1 ypc. Forsett who has no stats. Schmitt who backed up Weaver and again has no stats. And the DB’s are unchanged. I really hope I’m wrong, but I think there is a pretty good chance we’re going to have a very tough year.

by diehard82 on Apr 26, 2009 10:25 AM PDT reply actions

I'm not really expecting much next season.

I think our ceiling is something like 8-8 or 9-7. That’s provided Hasselbeck’s back doesn’t explode again.

by BrianL on Apr 26, 2009 10:27 AM PDT up reply actions

I was, but I'm coming around to your position

for a team that says it’s going to run the ball more, we have little in the way of RB talent. And that’s being generous. I’m starting to think THAT was a smokescreen and we’re planning to put the season on the passing arm of Hass with plentiful WR talent.

Curry and Unger

I think we under utilized Duckett.

Also I think our defensive scheme was so bad that it has to improve. I also really like Justin Forsett. I am feeling actually quite confident in the Hawks.

What do you like about Forsett?

Aside from some kick returns, he has no NFL experience. I hope he is a nice surprise, but it would be a surprise if he made an impact.

I am a Cal fan so I have watched regularly.

He has great burst and fight. He will get to the hole quickly but also has great patience and uses his blockers very well. While not being the largest back, he rarely goes down on the first hit.

I know it was just preseason

But Forsett just never seemed to go down. He had good vision, was patient and had good burst when he needed it.

I admit this is a bit unfair because it didn't happen,

but what if Hass, Shaun or Walt had gone down in 2005..? We probably weren’t going on the SB run. We don’t appear to be stacked at the skill positions (especially depth), but that doesn’t mean we won’t be competitive.

by JamesMurphy on Apr 26, 2009 10:31 AM PDT up reply actions

For sure

I meant if any one of them had gone down, not necessarily all three. Even in the case of losing one, you have to trust your unproven depth (e.g. Cassel being good enough to help a very good, but Bradyless, team to 11-5) can step up enough.

by JamesMurphy on Apr 26, 2009 10:48 AM PDT up reply actions

Don't judge the offseason too early.

We still have a handful of 7th rounders, which are like early UFAs, and the last few years have consistently yielded UFAs who come in and contribute. And there’s the June cuts and more movement still to come.

Maybe with good reason, though that is ridiculous value.

Next season, our starting line will likely be:

Walter Jones, Mike Wahle, Chris Spencer, Ray Willis, Sean Locklear. Behind them, we have for depth or potential starters in:

Max Unger, Mansfield Wrotto, and Rob Sims. Maybe we need tackle depth moreso than guard.

They said this about Duke on the NFP today:

“Duke Robinson Guard Oklahoma

In one of the weakest offensive guard classes to come along in years, Robinson still stands on the board and will end up being a good value in round three. He is a big, physical road-grader who can create movement in the run game and hold his own in pass protection. For a team that values big, physical offensive linemen (Eagles, Cowboys), Robinson should be an attractive fit. "

Good morning everyone

So uh….is it wrong that I’m completely fine with removing the franchise tag from Hill? Because the Seahawk Addicts commenters are inching closer to killing themselves.

He’s going to demand a long-term contract and eventually at the tail end of the contract he’ll probably already see a significant drop in production. It’s not worth just dumping our salary cap on the linebacker position. By drafting Curry he’ll be signed to a big contract and for him the only way to go is up.

It’s not the end of the world that Hill might be gone. He took money over team and I can’t respect that.

Fun Fact: If Patrick Chung and Marcus Trufant were to have a helmet-to-helmet collision, the world would explode.

by SSreporters on Apr 26, 2009 12:16 PM PDT reply actions

Money over team

and yet we don’t demand that kind of loyalty out of our franchises. I think that argument is bogus. Losing Hill hurts—if it happens. He’s good, young and improving. I think Seattle is still the leader to sign him.

by John Morgan on Apr 26, 2009 12:17 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree

But now I think he will end up signing for less than the 6/36 that was there. No one else is going to come close to that offer.

by stufr on Apr 26, 2009 12:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Hill didn't sign the tender for 2 months and the team called his "bluff".

So, he might turn prima donna and act like they jerked him around, but that wouldn’t be justified. Dude passed out in an intersection with a bag of weed in the car. He was lucky to get the tag and should’ve signed for the $8m. By not signing he missed the free agent frenzy, or what there was of one this year, and most of that money is now gone/needed for signing draft picks.

Either Hill is as dumb as a guy passing out with weed in the car, or he’s getting bad counsel, or both.

I agree with the sentiment

Someone threw in “and they got a first rounder too” at the very end, as if it was chump change.

New List

Jennings, Southerland, Gronkowksi, Greene, Sanford.

The cowboys have taken several guys I was hoping would be Hawks

so I hope they don’t pick right before we do. But I’m with you. Can’t believe he’s still around.

by diehard82 on Apr 26, 2009 2:35 PM PDT up reply actions

You and me both.

Seriously, I wish dreams came true. Then we’d have Duke in the 5th, Bear Pascoe in the 6th, Liberty in the 7th, and Reilly, Boeckmann, and whomever I don’t care for the compensatory picks.

by LantermanC on Apr 26, 2009 2:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Dodged two bullets.

2 RBs taken, neither of them from Liberty.

by LantermanC on Apr 26, 2009 2:39 PM PDT reply actions

dude is 5'9"

it’s a wonder we didn’t take him in the 3rd.

by Misfit74 on Apr 26, 2009 2:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh shit, we should have drafted him just for the name.

Bear Pascoe too.

Your punt-cover team could have a bear and a captain on it.

Three picks to wrap up the draft

I think Seattle takes high upside guys. This draft has definitely felt like it was more about that future than 2009.

by John Morgan on Apr 26, 2009 3:38 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah, which is funny because many said that we couldn't draft Sanchez because it would seem like

we’re playing for 2010, not 2009. Yet our draft is more geared toward 2010 anyways. When it comes down to it, we didn’t draft Sanchez because we wanted BPA, and we didn’t feel Sanchez was our guy I guess, or we felt Hasselbeck had more than 2 years left.

by LantermanC on Apr 26, 2009 3:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Curry and Unger are all about 2009

The rest is for the future, including another #1 next year. Overall I think this shows the FO thinks that last year was about bad a bad D system and a ridiculous level of injuries on offense.

There's a certain RB from Liberty

On top of Kiper’s best available list

by Ovreel on Apr 26, 2009 3:42 PM PDT reply actions

It's true

No one said Teal before the pick. Maybe that would have jinx’d it.

by stufr on Apr 26, 2009 3:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Dammit good point.

Someone compile a huge list of sucky players, and then when it’s our pick, we can all copy and paste, thus ensuring us to pick a guy we want.

Zona drafts kicker from Pitt

with a SWEET last name.Stephens-Howling, I’d love to have that on the back of a jersey.

by LantermanC on Apr 26, 2009 3:52 PM PDT reply actions

Another RB went in front of Jennings

If nothing else, he is going to be pissed off wherever he ends up at.

by stufr on Apr 26, 2009 3:54 PM PDT reply actions

And we're back on the clock.

Two more picks and we’re finished.

by BrianL on Apr 26, 2009 4:05 PM PDT reply actions

Two in a row!

Liberty and Gronkowski please.

Yeah I got my Cal player but...

I am disappointed. I wanted Mike Reilly, Rashad Jennings, or a LS/K/P uber combination player.

Is Morrah a pass catcher, or a blocker?

Apparently a red zone threat.

Hm, interesting.

This is the same team

that drafted RJ Soward with their 1st round pick about 8 or 9 years ago. Makes the Mitchell pick by the Raiders look sound.

That being said it looks like, when in doubt, they just took value, value, value which, in my opinion, is the right way to go.

8 or 9 years ago

Now they have different coaches and FO, no?

The Final Countdown.

So fucking perfect. Bahahahaha

Ok everyone, I'm going to have dinner with my wife and take it a little easy for the rest of the day.

If the non-drafted free agents are announced, can someone write up a fanpost and I’ll front page it and link it (under the wrap up).

Thanks for the civil and, well, awesome threads.

There’s a full wrap up posted and information about Seattle’s seventh round picks.

Enjoy your day, and thanks, John!

Take it easy John, you've earned a bit of a break.

Thanks for all the hard work you and Doug put in!
