Seahawks Sign Six Undrafted Free Agents

According to Eric Williams:

Michael Bennett, DE, Texas A&M
Tony Fein, LB, Mississippi
Dave Philistin, OLB, Maryland
Devin Moore, RB, Wyoming
Andre Ramsey, OT, Ball State
Tyler Roehl, RB, North Dakota State

So, on first glance I'm familiar with...none of these guys. Two A running back to compete with Forsett for the 3rd-string spot. Two linebackers - possible insurance for Hill leaving. One DE and one O-lineman. Update: the 5'10", 232 pound Roehl projects as a fullback (h/t A'Seahawks_Warriors).

Kind of a short list. I wonder if this is all the UFAs that will ultimately be signed.

Sando:

I'm sitting next to NFL Draft Scout analyst Rob Rang at the moment. Of the six, he singled out Bennett and Moore as players to watch.

Bennett's brother, Martellus, plays tight end for the Cowboys. Michael Bennett has the talent but hasn't always shown consistency, Rang said. Moore is a fast and versatile runner with better straight-line speed than current Seattle backup Justin Forsett, according to Rang.

A place to bury strangers.

Neato.

Kind of disappointed they didn’t pick up Southerland, but oh well. I imagine the Hawks will be looking into the FA market to grab Beer Truck insurance.

Roehl is a fullback

I think we might have found a cheaper Weaver with him.

Devin Moore is impressive at RB...

5’9", 192 pounds… but

-Ran a 4.36 at his pro day, and put up 28 bench reps!!! Thats 3 more than Curry put up!

I watched a video of him...

I wasn’t very impressed. He’s fast, but he’s gonna get knocked on his ass a lot. He’s someone who would do well in open space, but he has to find that open space before the defenders get to him. Best to utilize him on flat routes or sweep him out around the OT, perhaps with a lead blocker in front. He’s not a very good blocker, and more often than not, he’s gonna get run over. Best shot he has of making the team will be on special teams.

Reminds me of Steve Slaton

Slaton has a little better size, but their styles look very similar to me. Slaton adapted very well to the ZBS in the pros. If Moore has anywhere near that success, it could be a huge steal for us. Send him in for 6-7 carries per game and he’s a threat to hit a HR on each. I’ve been waiting a long time (since Ahman Green, basically) to have that type of pure speed threat sitting on our bench. I really like the pick-up.

Best comparison I can come up with might be Darren Sproles.

Similar size, hands, and moves. Obviously, Moore hasn’t played and NFL down or made the roster, yet, but I’m excited about him. He is the dynamic element I hoped we’d add last season. He brings speed to our offense (and special teams). I’d like to see him returning punts and getting a few touches per game.

I think they are both great pick up's

The DE was highly rated on ESPN’s chart.

The Andre Ramsey pick is baffling to me....

Check out his scouting report:

POSITIVES: Well-sized college left tackle best on the strong side. Plays with good knee bend, keeps his feet moving, and works his hands throughout the action. Quickly gets off the line into blocks, jolts defenders at the point of attack, and shows good initial strength, with the ability to turn opponents off the ball. Anchors in pass protection and quickly recognizes blitzes thrown by the defense.

NEGATIVES: Stiff, struggles to adjust and marginal skills blocking in motion. Must improve his overall blocking balance.

Doesn’t seem like a ZBS fit at all.

However

Considering Wrotto, Spencer, Willis, and to a lesser extent Sims, he seems to fit Ruskell’s ZBS, the new made-up one that we’ve been discussing. He sounds kind of like Willis actually, and we just re-signed him knowing we were moving towards the zone blocking.

Question for anyone that knows....

Are there a limit to post draft acquisitions a team can make?

Not sure, but I think Jaws

said that teams have picked up as many as 15 before.

and how do you sign them?

do they just get them to make an oral commitment over the phone, and trust them to show up later to work out a contract? it’s not like all these guys are all conveniently located in one big bunch

Prob have standard "show up at training camp and compete for standard money"

contracts laying around somewhere…fax or email it to them after talking to them/their agent on the phone and getting a verbal confirmation.

Moore should unseat Forsett.

Moore was the last RB I wanted us to get. Sweet! Speed to burn.

Here are some Pro Day times for Wyoming star Devin Moore, that we got from a source close to tailback: 40 yard dash: 4.33 & 4.35; Vertical Leap: 38.5"; 20 yard shuttle: 4.06; Bench Press 28.

White RB and Martellus Bennett's brotherfor the win.

I hope we bring in Southerland, Pegues, and Carcia.

No West Coast Guys

kind of a downer. Not that there’s a ton of talent coming out of UW/WSU these days.

by SpokaneSHAWK on Apr 27, 2009 11:04 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Lets hope Locker and UW can turn things around so he's on the radar in '10 or '11

not sure but I think he has 2 years left at UW. Cannon arm, elite speed, and while I know he’s endured more than his fair share of drops, I doubt he’s impressed many NFL scouts with his own performance thus far.

How tall is he?

I love him, as I do most UW guys… I grew up watching the Huskies w/ my Dad.

Dave Philistin

any thoughts to if he will make the final roster? Is he going to be a practice player?

Sounds good

in the link above. I really liked Solomon Elimimian out of Hawaii. He’s about the same size but sounds alot more versital and faster looks like a good pick up can’t wait to get a look at him.
