Seahawks sign Ken Lucas, Justin Griffith
http://blog.seattletimes.nwsource.com/seahawks/2009/04/27/seahawks_expect.html
Per Danny O'Neil:
"The Seahawks are expected to announce agreements with cornerback Ken Lucas and fullback Justin Griffith on Monday afternoon."
Both excellent moves, add much needed depth with the potential to be serviceable starters.
Any chance Lucas can play strong safety? Cornerback to safety transitions almost always involve a change to free safety, but Lucas was always a sure tackler and fierce hitter, and it might mask his declining coverage skills some.
I hope we crank out something with Hill soon.
A place to bury strangers.

Lucas was awesome that year
I think pic(k) is from his last year with us. He was such a ballhawk that season. Glad to have him back.

He's the one that gave it up against Wallace?
LOLOLOLOL
Hopefully he bucks up.

This has been an awesome couple days
I have no idea why but I always liked Lucas.

So why was Ken Lucas available?
hope that was just salary cap issues
by Will Kier on Apr 27, 2009 2:59 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Probably salary demands
Sounds like he got paid a lot in Carolina, and produced well but not up to expectations.
Maybe he gave the Seahawks a discount because he’s been here before and he likes Seattle? No idea …

Will we still have enough cap space to sign Hill?
by Tyopiod on Apr 27, 2009 3:18 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I'll bet any contract they do sign will be backloaded
Shouldn’t be a problem
by Ezzra on Apr 27, 2009 3:27 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Since he's still unsigned
even with backloading I wouldn’t say it hasn’t been a problem. It’s a problem, but even after today, he’s still signable.

the great weekend continues
I would imagine Lucas is penciled in as the starter opposite Trufant and one has to think Griffin will start. Good times.

No joke!
Wilson can move into the nickel, where he’s best, and having Griffith will be great for Schmitt to learn.
Lovin it!

Man, so Jennings is a dime?
That kind of sucks… I still think he’s decent enough to play. But that may just be the fan in my pulling for a first round pick to not fail.

At least there wont be so much pressure on Slim Jennnings
I’m still hopeful we can maximize his abilities and get something out of him, but yeah, he was truly awful last year.

YES! Glad to have you back FF, thanks for the good news!
I’m pumped, those are the two guys I wanted.

YES YES YES YES!
Now, about Hill…
Any chance Lucas plays some S in place of a certain .gif-monster?

Welcome back to Seattle, Ken Lucas.
I hope we crank out something with Hill soon.

Hill's probably gone
With the cap space these two signings eat up, plus a 3rd round compensatory draft pick last year to replace the third round pick we gave up next draft, i’m not sure if they will resign him.
I hope they can, I would be so excited to see him back as a strong-side LB. But do they fill his coverage skills really fit our new scheme?
by PattyB on Apr 27, 2009 4:44 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Sure
Put him on the line in the 4-3 Over. Sic him on the QB like we did with JP. He fits.

Both of them are one-year signings.
Either we’re anticipating the uncapped year or we aren’t paying them a boatload.

When did we give up a three next year, Butler?
by blackvanilla on Apr 28, 2009 10:06 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah 3 next year, 5th and 7th this year.

What about Freddy Keiaho?
Undersized, cover-2ish type weakside LB, doesn’t fit anywhere but the Colts system but I could see him playing for the ’Hawks.

Don't mean to be a negative nancy but
Lucas kinda sucked last year, definitely glad to add more depth at corner after not doing anything all offseason but is this really going to sure all of our db problems?
by gohawks89 on Apr 27, 2009 11:58 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
No, but what skills he does have
seem to mesh nicely with what skills our existing CB’s do not have. He most likely is not the CB he was when he left, but should still have the skills of playing the ball, good hitting/tackling, and experience to go along with the 6’0" frame. Rather than leaving Wilson or Jennings on Bolden, Fitz, Crabtree, Lucas should be able to play against these bigger stronger WR’s who lack top-end speed and at the very least tackle them where they catch the ball, if not play the jump ball WAY better than Wilson or Jennings currently do.

Exactly.
He’s pretty much a perfect fit (should he be half-decent). Trufant can cover the faster guys, Lucas the bigger ones. He is a good, strong tackler and as such will work well against the run and short pass in short zones.
Having Wilson in the fold means we can sub him in if the matchup isn’t favourable, i.e. if we go up against teams with two very fast WR’s. Also, we can mix up our nickel and dime coverages this way to account for other teams’ 3, 4 and 5 WR packages.
by djafrot on Apr 28, 2009 1:09 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Lucas was subpar last year, he's only 30.
Jennings was subpar last year, he’s only in his mid 20’s. Both Jennings and Wilson are young. If one of these three guys plays well, then we have a good 2nd corner.
