Why do people hate on Rob Sims so much?
I am constantly baffled by the people who seem to think that Rob Sims is awful. They seem to argue that he whiffs in pass protect but when he is in, Matt Hasselbeck has the best passing stats of his career. I actually think he is great at pass protect and just ok at run blocking. Am I insane? People with access and understanding of the information necessary to prove or disprove my point, please post.

Any source on that?
I don’t hate on Sims at all. He has potential to be great but he has an even higher potential to not be healthy. This year is probably his make or break (no pun intended) season to determine if he’ll be an important part of our offensive line.

Other than last year when was he injured?
Seahawk Addicts and Troll town USA aka TNT perpetually about how bad Rob Sims is.

Not 100% sure on this, but wasn't he playing through an injury in 2006?
Or 2007?
Or that could have been an entirely different lineman, maybe Spencer.
But Sims is your average run of the mill guard. Not a stud, not awful. Seems like he’d make great depth if Unger/Willis/Wahle are the 3 main players at guard.

I think he's much more polar, actually
He has the strength and athleticism to be quite a guard, and the pedigree. As a rough surrogate for strength, kinda like the 40 is for speed, he benched the most on the team, before his pec was torn. Benching does not an NFL guard make, but for any given team, whoever the top guy is, is pretty damned strong.
Which is why it’s interesting that his weakness was run blocking. Not mean or nasty, I guess. His own leverage being used against him. Trying too hard to pancake his guy from the first step, I dunno. But he can pass block, and he’s got tremendous strength, and is a smartish guy, so it adds up to the potential to be a large calibre guard, if not Pro Bowl, but so far he’s not getting it, it’s not translating into effectiveness on the field, and if he doesn’t become a really good guard, I think he simply flames out. No inbetween, serviceable liability type.

you are named after my favorite band, kuddos!
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain

I'm in the middle
I’ve seen him whiff a few times – but I’m hopeful that he and Spencer will “get it” very soon.
The best 12 Hawk-blocks I’ve seen in the last year or so have all been by Spencer. He’s awesome (when he’s on), just crushing peeps, both inside and downfield. I know that I can’t base my opinion on the game feed, but that’s all I get to see. I have seen Spencer get out of sorts in pass pro when the other team stunts. I don’t know if that’s on him or the scheme, or the communication between him and the guard, but based on the complaints I hear it’s probably on him.
Hopefully the new blocking scheme is easier for them to grasp.

Because Sims looked worse than he is, thrown into the fire to replace a HoF guard in his prime.
But Sims sucks ass at run-blocking, pretty good at pass-blocking though.

Right on - it was mainly a case of impossible expectations
4th round rookie in ’06, with the eagle eye of every Hutch-pining, Ruskell-hating fan focused on him. Full-time starter his 2nd year, and of course he had his lumps. And blaming the entire collapse of the Seahawks offense and running game on the hole at LG practically became the story that wrote itself.
‘08 was a lost year for him. First game of ’08 he had a couple of Russell-level visible whiffs in pass-pro and it just re-enforced the "TR’s Folly" narrative that was being pounded into the ground. But it was almost immediately forgotten that he played that game with the torn pec that landed him on IR.
Personally, I still have high hopes for the guy.

I don't have extremely high expecations for Sims.
But there isn’t a lot of great guard talent in the league so I can see him becoming a serviceable starter. His game vs. Buffalo was absolutely disastrous (same with Spencer), but I don’t really hold that against him once we were informed of the severe injury and the fact that he was playing handicapped vs. an elite DT in Marcus Stroud.

He's an awesome announcer. I have no idea why you would think people hate on him.

Oh, wow, that's Dave Sims. Never mind.

That's pretty funny
I don’t have many announcers on TV or radio that I am a fan of, but I think Dave Sims is awesome as well. Although I’ve noticed he’s been way off on one or three things, on about 2 out of every three Mariner games, this year, radio or TV. Pretty odd, I dunno if he always had bouts of inaccuracy. But overall, I liked him a lot. He filled in for someone, alongside Boomer Esiason on Westwood One MNF radio coverage, once, and the football coverage was seamless, he’s probably headed for national work within a couple years.

Sims will get his chance to compete for a spot
He hasn’t impressed me the way that Spencer has. When Spencer is healthy and having a good game, he looks like a Pro Bowl Center. I never really see him do as badly as some on here claim. My biggest concern with Spencer is his health. A bad back at his age and position does not bode well.
Now Sims doesn’t seem very good to me. I felt like Walt was carrying him during 2007. Maybe he’ll step it up, but I don’t know if he has what it takes.
The Bench isn’t really an O-line necessary lift, though there have been notoriously strong O-line benchers. I’d rather know what an O-line guy squats or deadlifts. Lower Body strength is better for holding position.

I agree
Trunk strength is definitely the make or break aspect of a lineman’s physique. Like I had said, as a rough surrogate for gauging strength, if he’s the strongest guy on the bench on an NFL team, I wouldn’t expect strength to be an issue with his ability to play guard in the NFL. Wouldn’t expect his trunk to be notably weak. Wouldn’t expect him to not be able to run block. Hence, I think all his problems are coachable, and he’s publicly malleable.
