An Interview with Forsett

Thanks to Eric Williams and his access to training camp, you all get the privilege of listening to his interview with Justin Forsett. Unlike the Brian Russell interview from earlier that was somewhat muffled by wind, the sound quality here is better.

Friday topic of discussion: Outside of the rare cases like Reggie Bush and Devin Hester, is it worth using a starting skill position player as a returner?

I liked Burleson in that role

Especially when he tearing it up on returns and still figuring out the WR game.

Now that he’s matured as a player, I’m happier with him sticking to receiving even though Wilson and Forsett don’t seem to have his abilities.

Wilson is a fantastic kick returner. He probably deserved to be in the Pro Bowl last year in kick returns.

I would not be surprised to see Josh Wilson get into the Pro Bowl this year with his kick returns.

My only problem with Wilson as a kick returner

is that he seems to be hard to knock down (which is a good thing). I just hope he doesn’t get injured. He should try to be more Hester-like and just do a one cut or a juke and then blow by people (if possible).

While my gut doesn't agree with you

Pro Football Referencedoes.

Maybe it’s the fact that I didn’t catch as many games last year as I wanted to (living out of state) or the fact that Nate may be more of a burner, that lead me to that conclusion.

Burleson ran a 4.51 before his drafting. Josh Wilson ran a 4.35.

Burleson is shifty, but don’t confuse that with elite straight line speed. Wilson is a burner.

Don't confuse

My vague memories with by introducing your “facts” and your “figures” and your “numbers”.

I still think Burleson is more dangerous.

He might not take it for a TD every time, but every once in a while he dipsies around three or four guys and takes it a good fifty yards.

Wilson seems prone to fumbling, due to the aforementioned inability to GET DOWN ON THE GROUND.

I have no problem using a starter as a PR/KR

IMO, the best player should get the job.

It adds what – about 10-12 extra plays per game if the guy is doubling for punts and kicks? I don’t think it presents much of a fatigue issue. And for injury risk … those can happen on any type of play. Maybe it’s different for a DB, who is used to tackling and not being tackled, but for a WR or RB, IMO it presents the same amount of risk as any offensive carry or reception. Although PR/KR has a reputation of being a more “dangerous” job, I’m not aware of any stats that show the rate of injury is any worse. But I could be wrong.

Actually 10-12 extra plays a game is quite a lot.

If you think about the stamina involved in KR and the force of the hits, those could add up quickly. Plus i think 10-12 a bit overdoing, just because we punted and received more kickoffs so much last year, does not mean that is the usual trend.
