Goodell on the climb:
“I’ve never been pushed that hard, both physically and emotionally, and probably mentally,” Goodell said.

I bet Mora really did at least kid around with Goodell about this
Mora said the climb was an opportunity for the two men to bond, along with bringing some national attention to the Seahawks, with Seattle often taking a backseat to bigger market teams like the Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears and New York Giants. Mora joked about talking to Goodell about changing the 10 a.m. kickoffs on the East Coast that the Seahawks have traditionally struggled to win in the last couple years.
Awesome. But even Mora is late.

neat
The weekend before the 4th I climbed up to Camp Muir. Clearly the summit is a different beast but just heading up to Muir and back is a fun ~8 hour day hike. Both times I’ve gone up it was sunny, so it was great t-shirt and shorts weather.

I was thinking about hiking up there this Saturday
Is the trail pretty clear of snow?

Wow.
Never mind. Disregard that last question.
How difficult is the hike? The NPS site says not for the beginner or novice, but I don’t know if that refers to stamina (which I have) or just wilderness experience. I’d love to hike up there and I know how to use a compass, but I’m worried that the Ranger would turn me away for being a greenhorn.

keeping in mind you shouldn't use me as any authoritative source
as of two weeks ago the path from Paradise —> Muir was covered in snow about 80-90% with rocky breaks near meadows. Depending on conditions the snow’s not that bad, if it’s packed enough it’s helpful simply following someone else’s footsteps up the path. The climb is enjoyable because even at the start you can roughly see your goal. You start trucking away ~5400 feet or so and by 8500-9000 feet the big thing is the altitude. So…yeah, in clear conditions the only thing, really is having enough stamina and endurance for the end. As far as technical skill my 13 year old cousin made it up, the last 1000 feet by himself, again with the caveat that it was in clear conditions.
Oh yeah, I say path because that’s more accurate then trail after you reach Pebble Creek, which is about halfway up. You’re on wide snow fields, so there’s a lot of room to move around heading both up and down the mountain. In clear conditions that’s not a problem but what you really don’t want to do in stormy conditions is accidentally head too far to the left and get into the Nisqually glacier basin in which case you’re mildly fucked. Or the right, I guess. That’s off the path too. Be aware and you should be ok.
Essential stuff to bring:
rain jacket/ rain pants (and pants help sliding down the mountain on your butt)
ski pole (mine was extendable, used it the whole way up and helped sliding down)
warm polar fleece REI-style jacket thing
too much food and water. be prepared.
if it’s sunny and cloudless then you’ll be cruising in t-shirt and shorts all the way until Muir, when winds start picking up. if it’s cloudy/rainy then you should at least consider whether or not you should be up there.

Sweet.
Thank you very much!
I plan on attempting it at least once this summer, and it sounds like a lot of fun. I just hope that I don’t plan on it for a weekend, and then wake up to low clouds. Or clouds of any kind. I was thinking about Saturday, but I lost my hiking buddy to homework, so I guess I’ll be exploring other trails in the park on my own.

I don't want to scare you off
if it’s overcast or cloudy, just keep it in mind. You should be ok either way up to Pebble Creek, so it’s probably worth going up just to see if it clears out higher up.

Point taken
I was just alluding to how the presence of clouds would decrease the likelihood for good conditions for hiking, or for viewing in general. I’d love to go up on a totally clear day, but you can’t win ‘em all.
I’ll have to look into this a lot more, since I don’t exactly have a lot of hiking “gear” persay. I was just surprised that you mentioned getting to Camp Muir in shorts and a t-shirt, so now I’m entrigued to the point of making it one of my goals for the summer, but I definitely want to make sure I’m prepared.
Thanks for the help!

What's a good regional trails and hikes resource?
I love hiking but never really know where to go.

Any book by the Mountaineers
on trails and hikes around Puget Sound or western WA will tell you everything you need to know. REI will definitely have them and probably most major bookstores.
