Walter Jones out with surgery, Marcus Trufant out with back issue
Oops.
I was not really counting on Walter Jones this year, but...hoping for him nonetheless.

Ouch.
Is Jones possibly out for the whole year?

I'm pretty sure it was unintentional but fuck you anyways
O’Neil on Trufant:
“It’s not anything that will need surgery,” Mora said of the injury, “It’s good that we found this out now rather than in the middle of the season and tried to push him through it because now we can make some decisions how to move forward.”
Let’s hope for the best.

The title of this post is going to give most of this board a heart attack.

Please, please re-write the title
“Jones getting surgery, Trufant’s back is messed up” or something. Trufant isn’t getting surgery.

clarity is a virtue so I'll change it
but I gave a valid implication in the title.

Thanks!
I know you didn’t intend for it to scare everyone but it absolutely read like Trufant was having surgery.

I understood what you wrote because I'd read about it earlier
In its previous incarnation, your title was confusing and alarming. If I had had a weaker grasp of the facts, I think I would have read your title and thought that someone was having (the very serious) back surgery and not the less serious knee scope and back problems.

The comma led me to interpret it the way the OP meant it to be.
But I will not argue that your interpretation was unfounded. Obviously several people here thought the same as you.

Oh well. Attempt to replace Walter with Levi, anyone?

As long as we don't go for Jon Runyan, I'm happy.
Mark Tauscher remains an intriguing option although from what I’ve heard his knee is shredded.

As the Walter Jones situation gets worse I keep wondering why they did not PUP him.
And because they PUP’d Trufant, I expected the situation to get worse, that they were not giving us the whole story.

You can't PUP a player that passes their physical for training camp
Once a player starts training camp, they can’t be PUP’d.
I think that they thought Jones would be able to come back. Remember, this isn’t a major surgery he’s going in for (at least not yet), its an exploratory surgery to maybe clean things out. Its really not uncommon (both Branch and Peyton Manning had them done last year).

Ok, I understand you can't PUP a player that passes their physical for training camp.
Are you telling me that while Walter could not practice while still rehabbing the knee, he was able to pass a physical? I do not believe that.
My point was that they most likely had the opportunity to PUP him and chose not to, and the implications of that could be that they will not keep him if he is not healthy for week 1, or it could mean that the numbers/versatility at OL mean he can be held onto without issue. I do not know. A small part of me worries that it means they plan to cut him at final cuts if he is not ready, rather than hang with him for the season. Marcus Tubbs comes to mind, as a player in a similar situation. Both players seemed to be PUP list qualified, but rather than use that for their benefit they ignored it for these two players.

It doesn't really matter to be honest.
If Walter Jones is on the PUP list when the roster is trimmed to 53, he’s going to miss the first six games of the season regardless of when he was initially put on the list.
by BrianL on Aug 19, 2009 11:21 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes.
Or we could decide to take him off at that point. Or at any point between the beginning and the end of camp, if I understand the rules correctly. It gives us the option though, if he is not going to be ready for a bunch of the games.
To that same point, Trufant’s presence on the list makes me think they at least want the option of him being out the first 6 weeks…which is scary.
by cashless on Aug 19, 2009 11:26 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
No
It doesn’t work that way. Because Jones wasn’t put on the PUP at the start of camp he can’t be put on there at all. At least that’s my understanding.

Reading over the rules again it appears you're right.
by BrianL on Aug 20, 2009 7:16 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
So I guess then
They’ll just have to leave him on the roster and keep him inactive if they want him to play this year, assuming he’s not healthy by week 1.

If the situation is really bad I think we've seen the last of Walter
I’m hoping for the best.

Or conditioning personnel.
Whatever it is, I’m getting pretty tired of this shit.

I think its the change from the team plane to the charter plane
If I’m not mistaken, the charter planes they use are full of coach seats. We’ve got 6’3" 250-300lb guys sitting in a coach seats for cross-country flights every couple of weeks on top the rest of the work a football player does. Those seats can’t be helping the knees or the backs at all.

that sounds insignificant
versus the hammering they get on the football field. Maybe there are sore muscles, but the players get world class jacuzzis, massage and whatever else too so that strikes me as a push.

I don't know about Trufant
but being on the same knee that was previously worked on, Jones’ issue sounds like a continuation of last year’s problems. And injuries in an aging offensive lineman aren’t exactly unheard of.
