Walter Jones to Undergo Exploratory Knee Surgery

Walter Jones will undergo exploratory knee surgery on his surgically repaired left knee. Exploratory surgery is performed because something is wrong. It is minimally invasive. It does not indicate severe injury.  It is diagnostic. This could be because of his back spasms. This could be because of his knee.

Walter Jones is nine months removed from microfracture knee surgery. Recovering from microfracture knee surgery in under a year would have been heroic. The start of the regular season was always an ambitious goal. Missing it does not end his career, but his career is ending. Whatever this means, and depending what they find, this story could develop very quickly, I feel relief in the certainty. I think this offensive line without Walter Jones can still be good. It's been twelve years since that was tru...

Yikes, that's a shame

But it’s better that it happen now rather than the middle of the season, so Lock can get accustomed to the left side. If Willis pairs up with Wrotto, the right side of this line is going to be mean as hell.

Huh.

I figured Mora’s statement about being ready by Wednesday, Sept. 9 was a bluff. I just wasn’t sure if it was a roundabout admission that Jones would not be ready by week one. Guess so.

It could be because of his back spasms?

He could be having exploratory knee surgery because of back spasms? Or do you mean his knee could be hurting because his back is out of whack and more pressure is being put on his knee as a result? Or his knee is causing his back to go out, because he is favoring it?

The last makes some sense, but that alone wouldn’t lead to surgery on his knee, I think. He’d have to be having actual knee pain/restriction…

The bottom line here is the best player on the team (Walter), and one of the 2-3 best players on the defense in a crucial positon for which we have little depth (Tru), are out indefinitely. We can still do well, but the margin for error has shrunk considerably.

I like our other Tackles.

This could be a major blow to what we thought Walter could bring to the table for what might have been (or might be) one final season. We’re more fortunate to have depth in Locklear and Willis than we have with options in the secondary. I agree the line will be alright, maybe even good, even w/out Big Walt.

Early prospect watch: RB C.J. Spiller, QB Jevon Snead, OT Ciron Black, DT Gerald McCoy, S Eric Berry, DT Ndamukong Suh, CB Ras-I Dowling 6'2, 200, RB Jonathan Dwyer

I honestly think that Locklear won't play and worse

than a 35 year old, beat up Walt. But depth immediately becomes the issue without Walt.

The demise of the Broncos in '09 is our future. Pray hard.

Would it be wise for the FO to re-visit the idea of adding Levi Jones?

He certainly would like to be paid like a starting LT

….it appears he is still a free agent and he’s a former first rounder. Cincy released him after drafting Andre Smith with their first pick last April. And there was talk of him visiting Seattle soon after his release but apparently those reports were false.

Now, is the contract the reason no one has signed him OR am I missing something here?

I'm stumped, as well.

I can understand why our organization didn’t explore him earlier, but I find it odd he hasn’t been signed at all yet, by anyone.

That should tell you everything that you need to know.

Makes you wonder

Why he wasn’t PUP’d? But in that same breath, maybe they really do expect him back sooner rather than later….or, like all of us, nobody has any idea until surgery is complete.

He passed the physical.

Can’t electively PUP him, when he passes the physical.

He started practicing. Then sat out, was too early. Then tried again, left the field wincing, and that’s led to this. The knee seemed to be ready, but something’s going on, so they’re looking into it. Literally.

Recovery time from arthroscopic surgery is 4-6 weeks

Let’s say six weeks. That puts him back at the beginning of October, but also assuming that’s as bad as the news will get.

No reports yet of finding anything unexpected.

Removing “loose bodies” and scar tissue is a relatively routine arthroscopic procedure (as opposed to cutting and stitching within the joint). 6 weeks is a very generous timetable for recovery. However, Walt is no spring chicken. Get well soon!

/fingers crossed

the phrase you wanted is "minimally INvasive"

unless you meant that the Seahawks aren’t making much of an effort to avoid talking about this surgery. ;-)

stick a fork in it

He’s done.
Matt, you might want to watch your back. Its the end of an era. Lock, never give up! Good luck!
