Projecting the Seattle Seahawks 53-Man Roster
Seattle must cut its roster down to 75 tomorrow. This is news. It has already cut four players, Kevin Brown, Dan Curran, Shane Simmons and John Tereshinski. This is also news. Poor John Tereshinski couldn't even get the Seahawks to spell his name correctly. I've never found much drama in the final push to 53. Here are the guys, minus injury, I think are locks for the team. All 53.
Quarterback
Running Back
Wide Receiver
Tight End
Joe Newton
Offensive Line
Kyle Williams
Defensive Line
Michael Bennett
Linebackers
Leroy Hill
Cornerbacks
Safeties
Specialist
One of Olindo Mare or Brandon Coutu
IR
Walter Jones
. . .
If Jones isn't put on IR, Kyle Williams is signed to the practice squad displacing William Robinson.
Practice Squad
William Robinson

I was thinking we might ditch Terrill
with Bennett showing he can be disruptive inside.
by Hawkhammer19 on Aug 31, 2009 1:51 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I would think its more likely Bennett goes to PS
and we keep 10 D linemen and 9 O linemen. Bennett is young and undersized while Terrill is experienced and grizzled. Grizzled. I always liked that word.
see, John, this bunch can definitely find some “drama in the final push to 53”.

Bennett is undersized?
I’m asking, I’m not sure of his measurements.

He's 6'3" and was 260lbs at the combine
I’ve heard he bulked up before he came to camp.

IIRC, he's at around 280 now
pretty sure I read that in an Interview with Quinn on the Times blog, but also said he’s still growing and has the frame to get bigger.
Sounds like they really tried to keep him slim so he could play DE at A&M.

from Danny O'Neil article:
" By the end of the first rookie minicamp in May, coaches wanted to take a look at him as a three-technique tackle — where he lines up across from the outside shoulder of the opposing guard. Bennett said he was a little skeptical at first. “I think I’m kind of small,” he said. "
Listed as 6-4, 274 by Seahawks. Our smallest DT is Terrill at 295.

Terrill is a pretty vital part of the locker room.
Don’t know if you guys buy into chemistry or anything but the guys would be pretty pissed to see him go.
Andrew Raycroft for backup? Does not compute.

I think we overstate Ruskell's committment to locker room chemistry at times
Because of the whole Brian Russell = GRIT meme. But Ruskell hasn’t hesitated to drop the axe on some popular but fringe players in the past – guys like Kaz, Urban, etc. He’s actually been pretty ruthless at times.
So while I’m sorta expecting Terrill to make the roster, it wouldn’t come as a complete shock if Ruskell makes the call for Bennett’s upside/versatility over Terrill’s ability to entertain the team with some power chords.

Ruthlesness: See Duckett, TJ
I expect Terrill to “chemistry” his way onto the roster, unfortunately. We’ll dump Bennett, and someone else will pick him up. I really dislike Terrill, because he’s the same type of wiley vet as Russell. Veteranositymanship combined with utter mediocrity. I daresay Terrill may be the worst player to make the 53.

I agree with this.
I wonder if we’re not overvaluing some of the D-linemen, though. It wouldn’t be surprising if we kept less, though it would be a disappointment to lose any of them (well, maybe not Terrill)

Good projection, except there's no way they go with only 8 offensive lineman
My guess is that they try to sneak Bennett to the PS, keeping Atkins and Reed for 10 D-lineman.

It's a pretty versatile o-line group
Doesn’t seem worth it to risk losing Bennett so you can have William Robinson on the team.

Talent is important but so is adequate depth
I agree on Will Robinson though, so there’s a fair-to-middlin’ chance that another O-lineman will be picked up before Week 1

Jones will not go on IR
Walter Jones will play by week five. Probably earlier. That is not homerism, that’s inside scoop. If he goes on IR its not because of his knee. His knee is fine.
I kick Atkins to the curb. He does nothing for me. He makes Lawrence Jackson look like Justin Tuck.
The other ? is Obomanu. Get used to being inactive, Ben.
Another loss is Lance Laury. But I get it. He just hasn’t improved. Herring and Hawthorne have shown improvement. Lewis is versatile and reliable. I’d rather have Laury around than Atkins though.

"He makes Lawrence Jackson look like Justin Tuck."
What makes you say that? Jackson’s 0 tackles in 2 preseason games so far? Or is it him being virtually invisible as a pass-rusher ever since he was drafted?

Only four corners?
That seems risky with Trufant injured
by laubster on Aug 31, 2009 1:39 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Babineaux and street free agents
The organization has for a long time viewed Babineaux as CB depth. Neither of the starting safeties are injury prone so that is a safe place to take a gamble. One has to keep in mind that none of our corners beyond those four are much better than the FA’s that will be available if injury strikes. We can also still PUP Trufant to start the season if there isn’t much chance of him being ready through six, but I doubt we will do this if there is a decent chance he plays in those last couple games given the talent level.
On the other hand we should probably keep a lot of DL because we have a lot of talent that is much better than replacement level.
It would be nice if we could figure out a trade over there to bring in another OL or S because we can’t play 11 defensive lineman.
by michaelfox99 on Aug 31, 2009 1:55 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Are you saying that Trufant will not start the season on the PUP list?

I was surprised you had CJ Wallace of Courtney Greene.
With Kent not making the team, who would be our second gunner besides Courtney Taylor? Wallace is a very solid on special teams but I’ve never envisioned him as a gunner…

No Jamar Adams?
I would hope they’d PS him over Moore.
by Nate Dogg on Aug 31, 2009 1:56 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Its kind of sad
How near identical this depth chart looks to last years. OL and especially S figures to be a very likely liability once again.
I do like that our front 7 is crazy deep, even deeper than before. Because of that, if the Seahawks find themselves 1 roster spot short, the first guy I’d cross off that list would be Terrill.
As others have said, not seeing Jamar Adams up there is concerning, not that we expected him to be amazing, but seeing Russell/Babs at safety is getting hard to take.
by kearly on Aug 31, 2009 2:02 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
not to just be a homer, but
I do see solid improvements in our D line this year.
Also, changes in the O line personnel year to year are often not a good thing. Look at the NYG offensive line, same average guys every year just becoming better and better as a unit. I think our current O line could be very good if they just get enough games in a row with everyone healthy.
by Stevo's on Aug 31, 2009 2:13 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs

Are you thinking Babs will help fill in while Trufant is out?

I wish we had an upgrade over Vallos though. I am fearful when that guy is in the game; sound but put prone to getting majorly blown up.

O-Line and defensive backs are scaring me right now....
I’m hoping we can trade a d-lineman for some o-line depth. Preferably someone who has played in a zone-blocking scheme before (Oakland and Denver, I’m looking at you). Just some depth to shore up what is looking like an uninspiring unit.

Gotta keep a locker available for that last-minute sign who gets cut by another team
I’ll guess O-line depth… somebody who fits the zone blocking scheme but gets crunched out of a roster that has better depth.
Then there’s the old “sign a veteran after the first game so his contract isn’t guaranteed” trick. Which tends to coincide with the “put the hot rookie on the opening day roster and then try to sneak him to the practice squad” ploy. I’m guessing Bennett and Reed are candidates for the latter.
No idea who the surprise cuts will be, so it’s hard to say who they might impulse-buy after the whole league trims down.

Mare missed only 3 times for us last year and can belt some footballs deep into the end zone for touchbacks. I’d pick him….but I’m not a GM.

I'd be shocked if Johns prediction comes true
First, I don’t see Jones on your O-line list. Can’t go IR. Retire/Cut?
If Spencer and Jones weren’t hurt, I could see 8. Not now.
I think Obo is competing with Taylor for a spot, not Kent. Kent is taller, faster red zone threat, still developing, and contributes big time on ST.
Unless we trade Branch, I think Obo is odd man out, not Kent.
Agree D-line is full of young talent, hence we keep 10 (5 DT + 5 DE). Reed is competing with Atkins and I think he gets the nod. Bennett stays to backup Mebane/Terrill and continues to bulk up to 300.
Mare wins.
In summary, relative to Johns prediction, Walt takes Atkins spot, and Kent beats out Obo, unless… We trade Branch and/or Jackson.
I doubt we do either. We know what Branch is capable of, and Jackson is still developing, typical of most DE’s. Not Tyson Jackson. That guy is a beast.

Kent got down the field quickly but more often than not he simply outran the returner. When he did get there he didn’t tackle well.
