Anyone know the details here?
Was he working without a spotter? Not to fault the poor kid, but it drives me crazy when I see people working without a spotter.

No, according to strength and conditioning coach Chris Carlisle:
“Carlisle also said an assistant strength and conditioning coach was acting as a “spotter” for Johnson at the time, but he did not identify the staff member."

Eh, usually I would say, who needs a spotter?
Only needed if you are a) working with extremely heavy weights, or b) going to or near failure.
Who’s hand slips when benching? It has happened to me twice, but it landed on my chest…. and then the weights fell off like they’re supposed to.
Though a USC athlete should have no problems finding a spotter. Usually getting a spotter is only a problem because it’s annoying to ask some random guy to spot you.

Maybe if you were benching 75 pounds man.
If you’re benching 225 like these guys, if that weight comes down on you you’re in trouble. Doesn’t matter if the weights fall off after the fact………

275 was what he was benching.
And I don’t think it would’ve been much more than a bruised chest if it fell on his chest. But it fell on his throat which was the problem.
And no, I was benching a healthy 205. Doesn’t hurt too much if it only falls a few feet… Pride hurt obviously because you look like an idiot.
