Seattle Seahawks Sack Oakland Raiders 31-21 to Sweep Preseason
Winners, Losers and Projecting
the Final 53 Man Roster
Winners
Dan Quinn: A great position coach finds hidden talent. It's perhaps the single greatest impact a position coach can have. In one draft, Quinn has found, coached up and scheme matched Nick Reed, Michael Bennett and Derek Walker. Quinn deserves some credit for Cory Redding too. Classes like this put position coaches in line for defensive coordinator positions--and head coaching positions.
Losers
Secondary: The front seven looked terrific throughout the game, but the secondary was sloppy, slow and not opportunistic. Seattle might lean on Jordan Babineaux to play two positions and keep seven defensive backs.
Courtney Taylor: Not sure he's cut, but it's very possible. I'd love to credit him for his sweet RAC on the Morrah moving pick, but we can't be sure he would have been open if not for the penalty. If he is cut, I expect him to make another team. Some receivers coach will see his athleticism and desire and give the kid a call.
Curt Menefee: It takes a special kind of genius to make sideline interviews more awkward and irritating, but Curt Menefee is that genius. Instead of sticking to pleasantries and platitudes, Menefee put on his reporter cap and got controversial. Asking Deon Butler about the poor quarterback play at Penn State or Darryl Tapp about how he feels about not starting does not inspire honest, insightful answers. It causes an athlete to bristle and be more guarded.

I'm interested to see what Seattle does about acquiring another corner
any thoughts from Field Gullers about who might be shaking loose from another roster that might be a good fit for us?

We're pretty high up there on waiver priority
So let’s hope someone cuts a gem and we are able to pick em up

yes
At least there a couple of nice things about going 4-12. Namely Aaron Curry and whomever we can get off the waiver wire on Saturday. They need to be scouring that list for both a CB and a S.

We also got another first round draft pick next season
Max Unger, Deon Butler, and Nick Reed.

When I saw Kent go down I thought...
Congrats you just made the team! Probably the only way too.

Haha
My reaction too. IR is on the team!

this sounds mean, but its a blessing in disguise
we’ve invested two years in Jordan Kent and I still cringe every time they throw to him. He had his chances but he does not have NFL hands and it is definitely time to move on.

Six DEs, John?
I agree we have talent there, and we don’t really know who will step up, but I don’t see how they can keep six. I think Reed played his way onto the team. I just think the team needs to choose between Lawrence Jackson and Baraka Atkins. I really don’t see how one has proven himself better at this point, but Jackson’s potential and contract probably keeps him on the team.
by Stevo's on Sep 4, 2009 8:14 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I'd cut them both.
Much rather see Reed and Bennett try hard and struggle than see Atkins occasionally show up and Jackson wander around and do nothing.
Of course, I havent looked at the cap stuff…
by Strictnine on Sep 4, 2009 8:17 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think that will happen
I agree that Bennett outplayed Atkins and Jackson, but he’s competing for a different role. Bennett is competing with Terrill to back up at 3-tech DT, and Reed as a situational pass rusher. Atkins and Jackson are the backups to Cory Redding at LDE, where stopping the run is a major responsibility. We still need some bulk at LDE behind Redding, so I think that’s a major reason Jackson stays on the team.

We need a lot of DTs/DEs
We need to be able to provide consistent pressure on opposing QBs to mask our issues in the backfield. If we have a lot of guys, they’ll stay fresher throughout games even with aggressive rotation and frequent blitzing.
That’d be my guess as to the reason why we keep so many. That and Kerney (maybe) and Redding go bye bye next year.

It would probably be more about roster depth
Since one or two of the DL would probably have to be inactivate each game.
Agreed that it makes sense to keep those guys to mitigate potential losses after the season (or during the season if injuries happen, which is likely).

Beat it Baraka
Dude is too small to be a power rusher and too big and slow to beat someone with foot speed. I’ll give Jackson another year, but cut bait on Atkins. If Timmay keeps him around, I get one step closer to disliking that GM.

Evidence? Atkins has actually done quite well when he is in games.
Take a look at the Patriots game for example.

Menefee
I agree completely. Asking Tapp about being a backup was uncomfortable to watch*. I couldn’t believe he asked that. Tapp responded professionally and courteously, which was more than the question warranted. A proper response might have been to ask Menefee whether doing play-by-play of the Seahawks/Raiders fourth preseason game was the equivalent of a “starting” or “backup” job in broadcasting.
*Though not as uncomfortable as watching the Ducks melt down in every conceivable way on the blue turf.

Menafee was a pathetically poor replacement for the awesome James Brown on Fox NFL Sunday
and is totally inadequate as a play-by-play guy

Question: if we only keep 10 DL who do you think we cut John?
I’d hope for Terrill, but fear it would be Atkins.

Not to be nitpicky, but is "Seattle Seahawks" in headlines really necessary?
Pretty sure we’re all aware of who is being discussed when “Seahawks” is used

Seems like other sites/writers get on the aggregators despite only using “Seahawks”, “Cardinals”, etc.

I am still testing stuff out. I am mulling over a schedule and an internal best practices this weekend that I will try to stick with through the regular season.

i hate Menefee.
I would cut Branch (to expensive), and put Payne as my 5th WR. Payne brings a lot of value to the 53 man roster.
I would also cut Chris Gaines I mean Craig Terrill, because Redding, Jackson, and Atkins can play tackle.

Cutting Branch makes no sense at this point
He’s got one more year to prove himself and not be made out of glass. When he’s healthy he is very good.
Terrill should probably be cut. Either him or Atkins has to go but I think we can trade either of them and get a mid-to-late round draft pick.

I really don't understand all this "Cut/Trade Branch" talk
I’ve yet to hear a convincing reason. I’m open to being convinced, but as of right now I feel that it is a bit rediculous.

Lots of "sell low" folks, I guess
I don’t know if its any worse than the “trade Jackson” sentiment.

Personally i like Payne as a player more then Branch.
sure Branch is smart, and shows up in big games. But the hunger and physicality of Payne, at a discount, is more appealing to me.
Also Hasselbeck cant find branch on the field, he is to short.

Not to threadjack this
But KIRO-7 picked up the Broncos/Bengals game. We get to watch the impending doom of Denver to kick off Sunday.

Speaking of that WR screen/pick play...
Q: If a WR and DB run to the exact same spot and collide, who is the penalty against??
A: The Seahawk.

This week
I’ve read Kent, Taylor and Payne all lauded for their potential as great WRs, all called bums with no potential, all called amazing ST players and all called horrible ST players. i don’t care who they pick for the 5th WR as long as we never have to worry about him starting.

I hope we're not overrating him, but
I was impressed by Bennett enough that I’d be very upset if he didn’t make the team. He had to make another statement in last night’s game and did. He’s impressed, I think, in every preseason game. He could be a nice low-cost replacement should we lose Redding next season. I really like this guy.
Early prospect watch: RB C.J. Spiller, QB Jevan Snead, OT Ciron Black, DT Gerald McCoy, S Eric Berry, DT Ndamukong Suh, CB Ras-I Dowling 6'2, 200, RB Jonathan Dwyer

Reed must stay, too, but not over Bennett.
Personally, if we kept either over Terrill I’d have no problem with it.
