Report: Seahawks Sign Lawyer Milloy

Alex Marvez is reporting that Seattle has signed 35-year old man Lawyer Milloy. Without giving him a hard look, I don't want to say too much about the former safety, but his coverage skills are atrocious. He is an upgrade over Brian Russell as a pure tackler, and as a run defender. Further, because he is a strong safety, Seattle will upgrade its free safety position by moving Deon Grant there. Have to wait and see how this turns out, but this could be the proverbial poop in the birthday cake.

Just let Jordan Babineaux play!

Remember Malloy being completely abused in coverage last season

but I almost don’t care because Brian Russell is a free agent tonight.

Cannot be sure.

However, he has been a FA a long long time. If he was wanted as a potential starting Russell replacement, I believe they would have cut Dave Philistin, or some other guy they were pretty sure would not make it and give him the chance to learn the playbook and practice.

I think in some run downs or creative nickle/dime secondary blitzes, he might come in and play as the 7th/8th guy in the box with Babs and Grant still covering deep.

Sando:

The Seahawks’ decision Saturday to release starting free safety Brian Russell shows strong faith in Jordan Babineaux’s playmaking ability as more than just a situational player.

I would expect Babineaux to project as the starter even if the team signs a veteran such as Lawyer Milloy, who played Seahawks coach Jim Mora in Atlanta.

Poop in the birthday cake!

Ewwwwww!

Seriously though, Milloy could be used situationally for his run defense and his abilities as a blitzer. He instantly upgrades us at safety in those two departments. Still a mean hitter as well.

Good move?

If this move is to add some veteran depth and not a starter, fine, but if I see Milloy on the field as a starter, I will not be happy. As far as I’m concerned, this is the same guy as Russell (at this point in both their careers), just maybe cheeper. Both Russell and Milloy are not starters, they are both average players (at best) at this point..

Well it's not that bad of a signing as long as it's for depth, right?

He provides some decent run stoppage and it gives time for Greene to develop.

The coaches were awake

Russell was awful.

Milloy seems like a better tackler and similar coverage guy to Russell. Maybe Mora wanted a more traditional strong safety.

Wonder why we didin’t go after Pollard? I wonder why he was cut. He seems not too bad.

I saw that

Pollard seems as good at tackling as Milloy, is younger, and has similar pass defense skills at his age. Though I’ll take the grizzled vet over Russell. I do think Milloy is an upgrade over Russell.

I have not watched Milloy play coverage. I imagine at 35 he has slowed down from his Pro Bowl days with New England.

Deon Grant is an excellent coverage safety. Milloy seems like an excellent SS and much better in run support than either. I hope Milloy has another decent year in him.

by ASeahawkfan on Sep 5, 2009 4:47 PM PDT up reply actions

That is one advantage with Milloy

Is Milloy good at run support? It will be nice to see Deon Grant play his natural position. He is not a strong safety. Lawyer Milloy as far as I know is a true strong safety and great in run support. We’ll be real strong front to back with him if he still has another good year in him.

...

Chiefs waived SS Bernard Pollard.

“Another failed Herm Edwards/Carl Peterson high pick, Pollard struggled in coverage throughout his three-year stint in K.C. He’s an explosive hitter, though, and could help a team as an in-the-box safety. With only a $530,000 salary, Pollard shouldn’t clear waivers.” -Rotoworld

Maybe we want a stop gap...

Until we draft one high next year! Berry anyone?

by StonerHawks on Sep 5, 2009 9:53 PM PDT up reply actions

I was thinking the same thing

Someone might offer Pollard more of a long term deal while we’re looking for a solid vet that can give us one good year at strong safety. Next year we can snag a great safety in the draft. If we stink because Milloy is bad, we’ll have two high draft picks for a safety and whatever else we might need.

I feel the same way,

I stay away all day studying/Bumbershoot, and Russell is cut, Bennett and Reed make the team, and the Huskies play well against LSU.

by LantermanC on Sep 6, 2009 9:57 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't see why this move is bad

I’m pretty sure we plan to draft a stud safety next year, possibly as high as the first round depening on our picks.

From what I read Lawyer didn’t get let go by the Falcons because he didn’t contribute or couldn’t play. He was let go because the Falcons wanted to go young. He still seems like a great strong safety and sure tackler. And given the composition of our secondary, a solid addition.

That means we have three cover specialists in Wilson, Jennings, and Grant. A middle guy in Lucas. And a big hitter with lesser coverage skills in Milloy. He seems to compliment our secondary. No more having to send Grant into run defense with Milloy smashing heads if they get by our front seven.

Seems like a fairly smart move. Milloy for his age seems durable as iron. I don’t know how he has stayed so healthy all those years of smashing. I’m feeling good about this pick up. I hope it works out well for us.

by ASeahawkfan on Sep 6, 2009 6:04 AM PDT reply actions

My fear is that Milloy will be exploited in coverage somehow.

Teams will try like hell to get mismatches with creative formations, down and distance calls, and routes from a variety of players to take advantage of his lack of ability to run like he once could. I hope to God that our d-coordinator and defensive staff can find enough ways to protect him against those very things.

Atlanta was weak all the way around

A run stuffing safety is one of the few things we were missing on defense. Given the number of cover safeties we have, I don’t see how they can’t make sure they minimize Milloy’s cover responsibilities.

Our best tackling CB is on PUP. Wilson is a solid tackler, but small and will be needed in coverage.

Milloy adds something to this team that we didn’t have and it will strengthen the run defense from front to back. I hope it limits those occasional long runs like Jamal Charles for 31 and the many other long runs that seem to come once or twice a game against the Seattle run defense.
