Seattle Seahawks Announce 53 Man Roster, Marcus Trufant to PUP List

Goodbye and good luck.

More photos » John Froschauer - AP

Goodbye and good luck.

Seattle has announced its 53-man roster. That roster does not include Marcus Trufant, who will start the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list. That's bad news, but hopefully the right decision. Seattle rushed Deion Branch last season and effectively lost his roster spot.

The roster reflects a major youth movement with some fringe guys unseating former regulars. Could this be reflective of changing opinions on replacement value? A movement towards freeing cap space next year?

CUTS: S Jamar Adams, DE Baraka Atkins, K Brandon Coutu, G Brian De La Puente, CB Marquis Floyd, T Na'Shan Goddard, S Courtney Greene, WR Mike Hass, CB Kevin Hobbs, FB David Kirtman, RB Devin Moore, CB Nate Ness, TE Joe Newton, WR Logan Payne, LB Dave Philistin, T Andre Ramsey, T William Robinson, QB Jeff Rowe, WR Courtney Taylor.

10 Quick Opinions:

  1. Walter Jones is on the roster: This speaks for itself. Get well Franchise.
  2. Seattle is super thin at Corner and Safety: This could foreshadow further moves.
  3. Courtney Taylor Cut: It came down to the fourth preseason game and Ben Obomanu put the decision to rest.
  4. Seattle deep at linebacker but no D.D. Lewis: I've never been a huge fan of Lewis. He is credited for being able to play any linebacker position, but he doesn't seem to play any of them well.
  5. Special Teams: The lack of depth at wide receiver and safety means Seattle could struggle on cover units.
  6. No Jordan Kent: Kent wasn't placed on IR. He was waived with a settlement. I think that ends his playing career. Other teams might ask, but will Kent answer?
  7. Cameron Morrah: I didn't see much from Morrah, so Seattle must be convinced he is too good to cut. Interesting talent Seattle will let mature, but if a starting tight end goes down, I don't think Morrah is ready to contribute.
  8. Derek Walker: Great size and showed up in the preseason. Walker could be the dark horse replacement for Cory Redding. Get your head up, today you are an NFL player.
  9. Lots of depth on Offensive Line: With this many question marks and injuries, can you blame the Seahawks?
  10. This is not over: One deadline met, but days to complete this roster. I doubt it will like it does today next Sunday.

I'm still not sure we should have signed Milloy

with Pollard being cut. Pollard intrigues me, but as long as Milloy is used properly (sparingly, and not in coverage) I guess it’s okay.

My point w/ the 3 LBs I listed is just that.

out w/ mediocre (Lewis) in w/ youth (one of the young LBs spared the axe). There are plenty of other examples, too. But I agree with you, Atkins does not make sense within the scope of my statement, and probably others. I see a trend here and I like it. Keeping Bennett and Reed was the right thing to do, and the team is making better choices than I expected. Russell being the coup de gras, of course.

Terrill(ble) over Atkins sucks, but at Russell is gone! One

One less “chemistry” guy is left on the roster, so I count that as progress. I also believe that keeping Reed and Bennett mitigates the loss of Atkins.

Such is the life of an NFL team with too much talent on it’s roster, right?

by ASeahawkfan on Sep 5, 2009 4:59 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Reed, LoJack and Walker over Atkins

Jackson and Walker are both stout and can both play at LDE or RDE, and Reed is more likely limited to a pass rush specialist role only. What I’m seeing is that Walker beat out Atkins, which no one was predicting. Except for Dan Quinn, I guess.

Walker is most likely a filler spot

We’re probably going to be looking for some O-line depth once the cuts are in. I figure Walker will end up on the practice squad by the time it is all said and done.

He’s good when used sparingly as a third down player, but far too often was used in situations that did not fit his strengths. Then he becomes a swinging door. I didn’t want him to be kept over Bennett.

My prediction- Terrill's name appears in 92% of 2010-2011 posts/comments

With Russell gone… Terrill will be the new FG whipping boy. For some reason FG always has to have someone whose weaknesses are the subject of every comment section.

Sometimes it’s the front office after letting a future HOF’er walk to Minn.
Sometimes this player is a local hero and former MVP on his last injured legs.
Sometimes it’s a kicker who never gets to play.
Sometimes it’s a safety that is late in getting to the action and routinely arrives with a forearm to a downed ball carrier well beyond the first down marker.

Craig Terrill… welcome to the microscope you never asked for and the criticism you didn’t know you deserved.

I’m not saying that most of the comments are off base…but I have no problem saying they are tired…..

I saw a Kelly Jennings INT.......really....

Look at all the DEs.

Even though Redding and Lo-Jack could play some DT if they had to, so can Bennett and we have plenty of DTs. Atkins has ability, but is there anything he can do that someone on the roster cannot?

Walker and Atkins are very different

Walker was a big producer that didn’t look athletic to scouts. Atkins was essentially the opposite.

by John Morgan on Sep 5, 2009 5:02 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

This could be wrong but a quick internet search says Atkins was more productive than Walker in college

“[Atkins] played in 49 games, starting 45 times and registered 175 tackles (84 solos), 18 sacks and 29.5 stops for loss and 52 quarterback pressures and nine pass deflections, recovered three fumbles, including one for a touchdown and caused five fumbles.” Link.

“In 47 games at Illinois, Walker has tallied 110 tackles, 24.5 tackles for loss, 15 sacks, and 6 passes broken up in coverage.” He had at least 2 fumble recoveries and a pick as well. Link.

by Nate Dogg on Sep 5, 2009 5:13 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I am more talking about reputation.

Scouting profile. I obviously didn’t watch Walker in college and only saw enough of Atkins to know he looked great in flashes, but you could forget about him. If I had both to pick just after their first preseason, I think I would still select Atkins. I think Ruskell figures he gave Atkins his chance and now his chance is going to someone else. Also, Walker is practice squad eligible.

by JustinWF on Sep 5, 2009 5:31 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Interesting?

QB’s- nothing shocking.

RB’s/FB’s- nothing shocking either (after the Duckett, Edge trade off). Also Justin should start at FB.

WR/TE- No Holmgren, no Kent or Taylor. A little shocked Morrah beat out Newton, I really thought Newton looked pretty good as a second tier TE this preseason (practice squad?)

O-line- Still need some tackle depth, but everyone stayed who I thought would stay.

DE/DT- I thought Atkins looked like he was getting better, but Walker had a better preseason (but not against “real” starters). Not so sure this was the right move, but not something I would lose sleep over. All the DT’s I thought would stay, stayed.

LB’s- Not so sure why the team droped Lewis, for a guy in Laury who I have never seen do anything (money would be my guess). The starters are strong, and Herring and Hawthorne are solid backups. Laury, is at best a special teams standout in the right situation.

SS/FS/CB’s- Thank god Hobbs is gone, Milloy for Russell is a wash in my book (but Milloy could be a good run stuffing backup, something Russell never was). I wonder if Fisher will last if someone else the team likes drops off tonight. Get well soon Trufant, the team needs you (I wonder if he is done for the year?).

P/LS/PK- Shocker Mare won out. No real shock if anyone watched the kickoffs. Also Houser has been what everyone said he was coming from the Saints, solid.

Most likely Milloy still has the ability to be a hitter and play in the box, which makes him a big upgrade theoretically. We’ll see.

by cashless on Sep 5, 2009 5:24 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

A few years ago.

I would agree if this was the Milloy of a few years ago, but at this point I look at this as a wash. Milloy is way better over his career, but this is not 5 to 10 years ago. Both are at best backups (now), neither should be starting.

by JustinWF on Sep 5, 2009 5:27 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

But Milloy won't be starting, so it doesn't really matter.

Milloy is veteran depth, familiar with Mora’s defense, and regardless, almost anyone would be an upgrade over Russell.

It's Great to be a Florida Gator!

you gotta look at it this way

Coverage: Grant > Russell = upgrade at FS
Tackling/run support: Milloy > Grant/Russell = upgrade at SS

Total equation: Grant @ FS + Milloy @ SS > Russell @ FS + Grant @ SS.

Pashos won’t take pay cut, so Jaguars cut him

Posted: Saturday, September 5th, 2009 | NFL.com Staff | Tags: Jacksonville Jaguars, roster cutdown, Tony Pashos

The Jaguars released OT Tony Pashos, a league source told NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora, because he wouldn’t agree to a pay cut. Pashos was scheduled to make $4.3 million this season

by brianinptown on Sep 5, 2009 5:25 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

?

Is he a zone blocker? Also, I wonder how much money he would want if 4.3 million wasn’t enough in Jacksonville.

by JustinWF on Sep 5, 2009 5:29 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

via Rotoworld

Pashos’ move from right tackle to guard was a bad sign, and the Jags weren’t going to pay him over $4 million in salary to be a backup. He’s immediately the top offensive lineman available, though, and should be signed quickly. Browns GM George Kokonis was a big fan of Pashos in Baltimore.

The more I think about this

the happier I am. Seattle invested in the pass rush. Between the talents they’ve added, they might have just fixed what I was sure would sink their season.

My thoughts as well. We'll see how they decide to use Milloy.

Bold moves for sure

Gambling a bit with Walker, Bennett, and Reed makes it sound like Gus Bradley wants to bring the house down on opposing QBs and Ruskell wants him to have the players to do it.

Top post over at KSK

“So Long, F-ckface”

The Seahawks cut useless-ass Brian Russell today to make room on their roster for Lawyer Milloy. The joy that this gives me is beyond measure. Two sacks and ONE interception in 32 games. As a FREE SAFETY. Good riddance to bad tackling, bad ball skills, bad physical ability, and late hits. I will hate you forever, jackass.

On the plus side for Russell, I no longer hope he gets cancer. I hope he gets playing time for the Cardinals.

Ouch.

but Jennings will replace Wilson on nickel downs.

I see

So wasn’t Jennings a decent #2 corner a couple years ago?

by Brendan Scolari on Sep 5, 2009 5:51 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Cover corner without ball skills

Eventually the quarterback passes at his receiver anyway. Took the NFL about a season to adjust. If Jennings can adjust he could still be good. Usually the cover part is the hard part. But his ball skills are laughably bad. He a had sure pick and watched it boink! him on the facemask.

by John Morgan on Sep 5, 2009 5:54 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

He regressed a bit

He seems to stick like glue to his man but has no eye for the ball and hasn’t bulked up as much as he could have. Bigger receivers just grab the ball right out of his face.

L Jackson

Why is Laurence Jackson still on the roster. when is the last time anyone heard his name in a tackle, a pass rush or even close t o a making a play. what a waist of a 1st pick, lose him and keep Baraka Atkins. I watched LJ this preseason and last year and did not see him do anything. Nothing, Nada, Zilch! Never ever hear his name in a play.
——I hope Courtney Taylor finds his way back on the roster.

by dirtyktm on Sep 6, 2009 12:03 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Baraka Atkins did nothing for a year and a half

Should LJack not be given the same amount of time?

Jackson was at least good enough to take up space on the Dline his first year, Atkins took up space on the bench. Not that i think he’s bad now, he’s not, this is just one of those very tough decisions that had to be made. Since they kept eleven I am a little surprised they kept Walker over him, though the intent may be to try and sneak Walker on the practice squad later. On the other hand, maybe he’s just better, he showed more this preseason as a rookie then the other two.

by B.B.Finnegan on Sep 6, 2009 1:03 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well LJ's getting another shot

I just hope he starts hitting people, maybe hard enough that they fall down. I always see him watching the play from the wrong side of the tackle or tight end. Your first round pick D-end is always gonna take up some space in the D-line. just when is going to take up the same space as the ball carrier and then have some kind of effect; a tackle, a deflected pass, hurry the QB, yell booo! at just the right time to make the ball wobble out of the QB’s hand. something where we then hear his name on the PA system so we know that he is actually out there playing football.
I guess your right you cant send your fist round pick packing his second year. that would be giving up. my bad

by dirtyktm on Sep 7, 2009 3:25 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The best news of the offseason...

…no more Brian Russell! I will take 36 year old Lawyer Milloy of Russell any day. Russell may not be as fast as Milloy and can’t tackle like him. At the very least we won’t have to see a safety getting run over this year, or contact being made and lost. Russell was a disaster last year.

by Generzal Zod on Sep 6, 2009 9:00 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

The guys who were cut had a chance to step up last year

Barraka Atkins has had a chance, he was out there and he got run over. Laurence Jackson does get another year because of the money, that’s the NFL. The defense is the problem – I am worried about CB.

by Generzal Zod on Sep 6, 2009 9:03 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

If Trufant were healthy, I think CB would be looking a lot better

We start Tru and Lucas, Wilson would be the nickel and Jennings the dime. That’s not too shabby. The whole problem is that Tru is injured, so every other guy moves up a spot (Wilson starts and Jennings is in on nickel downs). I still think theres a good chance we’ll sign a vet after the first week (so their contract isn’t guaranted) to fill in until Tru can come back.
