Seahawks Lose - But Who Cares?! CHIEFS CHIEFS CHIEFS

Between writing, talking to my wife and watching the Chiefs on Game Center, I managed to miss most of this game. That makes me a bit of a bad fan, because my eyes are on the future, but taking any game for granted is low. I'll see you next August Seahawks. I'll try and return a better fan and you return a better team.

Until then, we live with your ghost.

Star-divide

It's draft time, bitches.

This day went about as perfectly as it could.

I never root against the Seahawks, but it’s hard to feel too disappointed about our game. And the 49ers won, and Carolina won. And Denver is out of the playoffs. Those 1st rounders are going to be mighty sexy to use this draft.

I thought I wouldn't be upset about the Seahawks losing.

Surprise, I’m upset!

But it will definitely help the draft, and I’ll probably be OK with this loss come April anyway

Denver's pick will be #14

Hawks’ are 7th

The demise of the Broncos in '09 is our future. Pray hard.

I don't think so.

Tonight’s game still impacts the draft pick from Denver, I think.

Nope. Official.

Denver’s out of the playoffs and if the Jets go 8-8, their strength of schedule is harder than Denver’s, so the pick isn’t affected.

Our schedule had to be easier than the Browns

I would think they’d pick after us since they played in a division with all winning teams.

by laubster on Jan 3, 2010 4:38 PM PST up reply actions

I am impressed with Matt

I would NEVER advise cutting Matt until I SEE another QB pushing him for the start . To many cut happy people out there . That being said I would like to see another QB being groomed and pushing . When a hurt Matt is better than a healthy Seneca or Teel speaks volumes

by IDAHOPUMA on Jan 4, 2010 7:41 AM PST up reply actions

A hurt Matt probably wasn't better than Seneca after the shoulder problem arose.

Also, we don’t know if Teel is better or worse since he’s only taken about 30 or so snaps in the preseason.

by BrettJMiller on Jan 4, 2010 11:20 AM PST up reply actions

Assumtion on Teel

We don’t know since we only saw 30 snaps .
I am sure coaches saw alot more , but it would have been nice for the fans to see as well how Teel has not gotten even close to dis-lodging Matt that armchair coaches would like us to believe

by IDAHOPUMA on Jan 4, 2010 10:27 PM PST up reply actions

I want to like Knapp, but today was it for him.

Really awful playcalling.

I hate DeHaven and fittingly our last special teams play is Jon Ryan fumbling a fine snap.

I want to like Hasselbeck, but his final throw was an INT. He started the year with an INT on the 3rd play of the game and ends it with an INT.

I like John Carlson. He had our first TD of the season and the last TD of the season.

Alas, there will be serious shakeups, and it’s for the better of the team.

Agreed

Not only does Knapp seem like a good coach but I had a chance to talk to the guy and he really is a nice guy and loves the people of Seattle. But today was not his day. Hopefully the coaching staff can regroup during the off-season and fix what’s been going wrong. DRAFT TIME!

Ending the season with four straight losses, three of them embarassments

May have sealed our coaches fate. We’ll see. Need to hire a GM first

by B.B.Finnegan on Jan 3, 2010 4:31 PM PST up reply actions

I don't think even a guy like Al Davis would fire the whole coaching staff after one season

Yes the coaching staff has been horrible this year and embarrasing but it’s highly unlikely that the majority of them would be fired after their first season here in Seattle like Gregg Knapp, Gus Bradley, Dan Quinn, and Tim Lewis. DeHaven perhaps but I think we’ll see a similar coaching staff next year.

Usually I think firing a coach after 1 year is a bad idea

But 4 straight losses to end the season, so many blowouts and outright embarrassing losses, never winning a single challenge, 3 times he called players out and play-calling that became more questionable as the season went along, at the very least I think a coordinator needs to go.

by BrianL on Jan 3, 2010 4:59 PM PST up reply actions

I'm under no illusion that the rebuilding is going to happen overnight. It's going to take several years of stocking some above average to elite talent at key positions to do so.

That’s one reason why I’m OK with him being around for one more year.

There's also the issue of Mora being the secondary coach

for the last few years, and our secondary has been terrible. Get rid of this guy. His leadership skills are questionable at best, and I honestly don’t think he’s a good coach. He lost this team a long time ago.

by Wayward Llama on Jan 4, 2010 4:00 AM PST up reply actions

That's the most important part

I agree that Mora lost the team quite a ways back, and that’s the #1 reason he should be let go. If the rest of his coaching abilities weren’t suspect it would be arguable, but if the players don’t respect him then none of it matters.

by Camarostache '77 on Jan 4, 2010 7:25 AM PST up reply actions

With Ruskell gone, it's a possibility the team goes in an entirely new direction

Allen and Lewieke didn’t pick these coaches. It’ll depend a lot on what their team audit finds. It looks very up in the air right now. If Ruskell were here, I’d say everybody stays, but now I’m not so sure.

by B.B.Finnegan on Jan 3, 2010 4:37 PM PST up reply actions

That's basically what it comes down to.

Mora was a Ruskell hire. The new GM should be given the opportunity to go the direction he wants to go. Mora needs to be fired before the new GM is selected. Then the new GM can go through the hiring process and re-hire Mora if he feels he’s the best choice.

by Wilder. on Jan 4, 2010 12:22 PM PST up reply actions

That's the best idea I have heard yet...

…it covers all the bases: gives the GM a totally free hand, and puts Mora on the outside looking in, where is exactly where he deserves to be.

Hawthorne as Safety ??

Well his INTs show he has some coverage skills
Has some good penetration for safety blitz
and he hits people pretty good
Are his physical specs off or just an athlete learning another position ?

by IDAHOPUMA on Jan 4, 2010 11:54 AM PST up reply actions

Was not sure of what safety skills Hawthorne is lacking

Is it coverage speed vs Babes or Grant ?

Or does Grant or babes do better at run D or pass rush better then Hawthorne can . He seems to have range but I could be mistaken

True , players draft stock shifts

after combines tends to be the most drastic shifts in the players draft positions . The next biggest I am thinking is the end of the bowl games and the 3rd would probably be whom is coming out early ( unless they have already declared )

Anthony Davis???

Why? At best, he’s projected at RT. He’s quick off the snap, but he has poor lateral movement and gets beat by simple moves way, way too often. His hand technique isn’t very impressive either.

And Berry is realistically thought to be available around pick #7, so that talk can continue. Right up until the draft.

It's possible....

That Okung or Berry could fall to the Seahawks with the 6 or 7th overall pick. I would be shocked if the rams took the chance to pass on Claussen.
2. Detroit will take Suh,
3. KC will either take Okung, G. McCoy or Berry,
4. Tampa will either take McCoy, D. Morgan, Berry or address the WO position with D. Bryant,
5. Washington will defintely take Bradford.
Assuming we are 6 we get what should be the Hawks first priority Okung. If we drafted 7th quite possibly Berry will be there.
Thoughts pls?

by cthunder on Jan 4, 2010 2:37 PM PST up reply actions

Hm.

I’ve become a bit lukewarm regarding Okung. There are some negative reports out there on him by people who have been watching him this year. For instance, in the Cotton Bowl, Rob Stanton observed some extremely disconcerting plays where Okung allowed himself to be beat – not that he was beaten, which will happen to linemen at times – but that he was sloppy and made little effort against players with him he had an athletic and size advantage over, thus allowing them beat him with a simple move, when a little effort would have negated the efforts of the defensive player in each instance.

Last year, I would have flatly disagreed, but I haven’t watched him much this year, so I’ll give the benefit of the doubt. But if it is true, what’s changed? I’d like to find out.

As for Okung

Well , I am not a scout so I am sure their is a list of the top 3 LTs in a folder all being compared but I am confident whomever will be the top LT in the draft .
Another point of note that pops up this time of year is ’ mis-information ’ .
People tend to have bias’s even when they do not know it themselves . It is why every team has a different draft board . I do not know anyone that had Trufant going in the first .

draft order

Yes, a good day for a Seattle draft. I have Seatte’s pick between 6 and 8 (don’t know the tie-breakers with the Raiders and Browns) and Seattle/Denver pick between 12 and 16 (again, not sure the tie-breakers, and thats assuming the Jets win tonight for the ninth time).

Does anyone know for sure what the order will be?

by Hawksince77 on Jan 3, 2010 4:35 PM PST reply actions

The tie-breaker is decided by strength of schedule.

I really don’t know who’s schedule was harder, the Browns, Seahawks, or Raiders. But I think the Browns, given the division that they play in, had it harder than the Seahawks, therefore, I think the Seahawks will draft #7

I think the Raiders did too

Chargers had more wins than the Cardinals; Chiefs had more than the Rams; Broncos and 49ers had the same record. If you just look at the division, the AFC west was better than the NFC west. I don’t know about the other games but I would guess that Seattle picks before Oakland in the first round.

Based on strength of schedule published at theredzone.com

I think the order would be Rams, Lions, Bucs, Chiefs, Redskins, Browns, Seahawks, Raiders drafting 1-8. Followed by Bills, Fins, Jags, Da Bears, Titans, Niners, Hawks (Denver) at 15, Giants and Panthers. If the Jets lose tonight, they slip in front of the Panthers at 17. I believe we’re locked in at 7 and 15.

I did the math. Seattle opponents had 124 combined wins. Oakland opponents had 133 combined wins. Cleveland opponents had 131 wins (132 if Cincinnati beats the Jets). Seattle should pick 6th in the first round.

I wouldn't

Plenty of good talent that’s going to be available at 15

And considering that this team isn't going to compete next season

there are players we can deal to gain back third round or potentially higher value draft picks.

by BrianL on Jan 3, 2010 5:03 PM PST up reply actions

That too.

The Seahawks have a lot of options heading into the offseason. `

I would not mind having a shot at Cody at #15

A much needed push in the DT rotation that would demand double teams . Looking forward to watching the slimmed down 375 pound lineman in the championship game , though I do not care as much for his FB appearances on the goal line . DTs shed blocks , not lead FBs LOL

by IDAHOPUMA on Jan 4, 2010 8:32 AM PST up reply actions

Sorry but

G. Cody would be long gone by the time the Hawks pick at #14 or #15.

by cthunder on Jan 4, 2010 2:44 PM PST up reply actions

G. Cody?

His first name is Terrance.

by thebyron on Jan 4, 2010 3:53 PM PST up reply actions

sorry

I was thinking of G. McCoy my bad

by cthunder on Jan 4, 2010 7:40 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah Terrance Cody

Would make for a nice addition to the DT rotation like Tubbs was . Want to see how he does in the championship . Very easy to pick out on the Dline heheheh

by IDAHOPUMA on Jan 4, 2010 11:18 PM PST up reply actions

No worries.

I was wondering if I’d overlooked some stud prospect.

by thebyron on Jan 5, 2010 3:08 PM PST up reply actions

If either Clausen or Bradford are available at 7

And the Hawks aren’t crazy about either one, but somebody later in the round was, it would be nice to trade down for their 1st and 2nd like the Browns did with the Jets last year.

by Badmotostinkfinger on Jan 3, 2010 5:13 PM PST reply actions

Problem is the teams likely to consider a QB that high are drafting ahead of us

Unless the Raiders are thought to be in the mix, no reason for the Bills to trade with us. If they think we’re in the mix, they should trade in front of us with the Browns for example.

by diehard82 on Jan 3, 2010 5:17 PM PST up reply actions

Maybe Denver?

Or are they satisfied with Orton?

by chrees on Jan 3, 2010 5:21 PM PST up reply actions

The Rams last 3 1st round picks have been on both sides of the line, 4 of the last 5

They desperately need a QB, but my gut instinct and early rumors make me think they’ll go after Vick pretty hard. Plus I think Suh is to good to pass up and none of the QB’s are worth it. Then they’ll have the DT and MLB of the future in their 4-3 with Suh and Lauranitis.

After that, who might need a QB.

Lions- No

Bucs- No

Chiefs- No

Redskins- Yes, and I would have thought it was a guarantee a month ago, but Allen and Shanahan aren’t as desperate for big names as Snyder.

Browns- Yes, but I’m not sure that a QB guru like Holmgren who has had great success with the likes of Montana, Young, Favre and Hass, none of which were high 1st round picks, will be determined to take one that early.

Bills- Yes

Raiders- Who the fuck knows, they need one, but Haden, Dunlap and Mays seem like they fit the Leatherpants mold than a QB this year.

Hawks- Yes

Broncos- McD apparently thought Orton was better than Cutler, but they haven’t re-signed him yet and seeing as how the season finished and how erratic Baby Mangini is, I wouldn’t be surprised if they took one, and both Clausen and Bradford fit the mold of a QB that he would like.

by Badmotostinkfinger on Jan 3, 2010 6:39 PM PST up reply actions

Good breakdown

Shanahan traded up to get Cutler, and since it will be his first year in Washington (should he be offered, and accept, the job), he’ll probably feel the need to get “his” QB. Campbell, at most, has one year left with Washington and I think most would agree that even if brought back on an RFA contract, he’d just be playing out his time. Depending on who you ask, either Clausen or Bradford would be reasonable value at #5. I won’t call it a stone cold lock 5 months before the draft, but I feel that Washington will be very likely to draft QB at #5.

In a market which teams will want to trade out of the top 5 picks even more than usual (rookie salary cap on the horizon), it might behoove Seattle to see if they can get a good deal trading up. They probably won’t be able to make a deal for Suh, since its the Rams they’d have to deal with, but its not unreasonable that they could trade into possession for Gerald McCoy or up a mere two spots to leapfrog Washington, which would likely give them their choice of either Clausen or Bradford, whichever one they are more sold on.

Another idea I’ve heard, although a bit unconventional, is to stay put at #6, and try to deal for a player after he’s drafted. For example, lets say the Seahawks are really set on drafting Bradford. They don’t trade up, hoping that he falls to #6. If he does, then great- but lets say he goes #5 to the Redskins. You call them up, you say, “we’ll offer you our #6 pick and our 2nd rounder for the rights to Bradford.” Maybe the Redskins would say no, but it would be a tough offer to refuse, a 2nd round pick in exchange for choosing anyone other than Bradford, including (most likely) Clausen.

Not going to happen

If teams are trying to trade down as originally suggested to avoid the crippling salaries of top 10 picks, why should Seattle behave differently? And why overpay for said trade to boot? Desparation leads to dumb decisions. While I don’t think Hass has more than a year or two (at most) left in those bones, drafting the next Brady Quinn won’t help. I’d much rather fill the QB need through a trade, like Seneca Wallace and our 2nd rounder to Philly for Kolb. He’ll be a free-agent after next year and Philly needs to decide whether they’re going to dump McNabb ala “Green Bay and Favre” and move on. Trading him nets value before he hits FA in 2011.

by diehard82 on Jan 3, 2010 10:26 PM PST up reply actions

Seattle would behave differently

because they’re in a unique position that those other teams aren’t. They can clear salary space for two first round picks by simply cutting ties with Walter Jones and Matt Hasselbeck.

by BrianL on Jan 3, 2010 10:31 PM PST up reply actions

It's a question of whether they will.

But if they do, you’re right, they are in a unique position.

Doubt you will see Matt cut

No one is even close to competing at that level unless you want to pick yet another 2nd best QB in the draft from Notre Dame

A heavy majority thought the Seahawks were drafting Michael Crabtree this time of the year.

I seem to remember doing this once before with some other kid behind Bledsoe

Rick Mirer and Jimmy Clausen are two different people.

Both of them going to Notre Dame means nothing, Mirer was there 17 years ago.

We don’t think Kyle Boller and Aaron Rodgers are the same cause they both went to Cal, do we?

I like Forsett, but not fast enough. He gets caught from behind a lot.

With Spiller (Chris Johnson clone), Forsett would be the new Mo Morris 3rd down back.

by blazerbill on Jan 3, 2010 11:00 PM PST up reply actions

Speed is not necessary to be a good running back.

Besides, Forsett has enough speed. And please, do not compare Forsett to Maurice Morris. If you want a better comparison, I’d say he’s more of a poor man’s version of Brian Westbrook.

Good point

I am fine with Forsett . Many RB FA can be brought into camp as well to see if they can push him off the spot . Same for QBs .
We have had a ton of issues bringing in LTs so that should be top in draft

by IDAHOPUMA on Jan 4, 2010 8:40 AM PST up reply actions

Exactly.

We need a big bruiser who can Forsett can compliment.

True

but it would be nice to have a power back to take the anxiety away from short yardage situations. The again, a good, balanced halfback with decent speed would be nice. Someone who can plow short yardage but also break away. Forsett can do neither.

LOL , lets watch Alabama and see if they put DT Cody in again as FB

Well , he does out weigh every single lineman in the draft by 40 pounds atleast offense or defense lines . Last game said he ’ slimmed down ’ to 375 .

Like John pointed out in his podcast

if the team can hang onto Spencer the interior line really is set. If there is a tackle worthy of a #6 or a #14 pick, take them, but don’t reach just because they’re the best tackle in the class.

I really, really hope we keep Spencer.

I can’t see him being expensive, and would love some continuity inside.

Shoot me, but I wonder if we couldn’t even go into next season with Locklear, Sims, Spencer, Unger, Willis.

waits to be shot

by djafrot on Jan 3, 2010 11:11 PM PST up reply actions

Seattle could do that.

They could also draft better O-line talent.

by Carl Shinyama on Jan 3, 2010 11:16 PM PST up reply actions

O-line can hold that set but .............

draft a couple LT anyway . Depth or slide to other side but they will definately push the current positions . If Spenser can hold onto starting RG fine , but it never hurts to have some talent pushing as Unger pushed him off center .
Lock needs some pushing . Either he steps up competing against a LT pick , or moves to RT or becomes a backup . I think we found that having more potential starting LTs is a good thing .

by IDAHOPUMA on Jan 4, 2010 8:44 AM PST up reply actions

Not sure about Lock.

I think he needs to go back to RT.

Since Wes Welker is out, and we trade Deon Branch to N.E.?

Is it too late for trades now, or do we have to wait for the off season? Can we get at least a #2 for him?

Getting a #2 for Branch would be nice

Glad he had a good game . Behind Burl and Housh is tough to be #3 for his money . He could get a #1 or #2 spot on a few other teams since many other WR are RFA on this uncapped year anyway

by IDAHOPUMA on Jan 4, 2010 8:49 AM PST up reply actions

We're not getting a #2 for Branch.

I’d be surprised if we can get a #5. Not that he’s awful, but I think the perception out there is that he hasn’t produced and is injury prone. Most teams would probably take their chances on a draft pick.

by djafrot on Jan 5, 2010 1:27 AM PST up reply actions

Better than cutting him

He is the one starter I think would do better elsewhere . Other starters I could see dropping in the depth chart . Frye , Goddard & McIntosh I do not see pushing Lock or Willis .

I would draft 2 LTs , drop two of those guys .

Of Bryant , Mebane , Terrill and Cole I could see Terrill dropped for a DT pick .

by IDAHOPUMA on Jan 5, 2010 8:51 AM PST up reply actions

I'm just hoping we have a competent GM who knows what to do with a #6 pick.

Messing up a top 10 pick isn’t just a missed opportunity, but is also significant capital invested in little production that can really plague a franchise. I would be very pleased to see a GM recognize (if this is indeed the case) that there isn’t a #6 worthy candidate on the board and not succumb to the pressure of having to resuscitate this team.
