FPG: Pete Carroll and the Eroding Future

Cut in with a little sludgy, down and out rock and roll about Salton City: A barren place, unfinished and since abandoned. I boosted the volume, but Audacity lacks a tool to filter out seething anger. That's mercilessly intact.

This is a terrible day

Throughout all the losing, there was still the hope that we would recognize what mistakes we’d made in the past and improve upon them. Instead, this move suggests that we haven’t really learned anything.

Maybe Carroll comes out of nowhere and builds some crazy good team. But I’m a lot less hopeful that this franchise will recover anytime soon today than I was yesterday, and that’s a terrible feeling.

You and 75% of FG man

It’s gonna be interesting to say the least.

I think John's point is that we can't expect this team to turn around overnight anyway.

We’re beyond thinking that we just need a piece or two and we’re right back to dominating the division. We need to look at this as a starting point, cultivate as much young talent as we can, and hopefully that talent will provide us with the foundation for the next decade.

by Hmph on Jan 8, 2010 8:51 PM PST up reply actions

I never expected it to turn around overnight

I expected them to put the right person in charge of the rebuild so that it was most (or more) likely to succeed and not take many more years than it needed to while they figure out their first hire was a bad one who made bad decisions regarding that young talent we need, etc.. They didn’t do that here.

One thing I found curiously missing:

Should we recognize Carroll as a strong leader? How much is his leadership a part of what his new role will be? Also, is Kirwan a foregone conclusion? Sounds like we’ll still interview Ross and Schneider for GM. If Carroll can hire a good staff and be an excellent leader, I think he’s got a decent chance to succeed.

by Misfit74 on Jan 8, 2010 8:51 PM PST reply actions

hmmm, I'm not sure really

I’m having a hard time finding out.

this what I’ve been able to dig up:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007_UCLA_Bruins_football_team

Defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker
Base defense 4-3

And Carroll used mostly 4-3. I think it’ll still be a 4-3.

Head Coach: DeWayne Walker (first year at NMSU, 3-5)
Letterman Returning: 44 (21 Lost)

by chrees on Jan 8, 2010 9:10 PM PST reply actions

Ruh-row

I.com’s Jim Trotter reports that Seahawks owner Paul Allen is unwilling to offer head coaching candidate Pete Carroll total control over football matters.
And we have a potential hitch. “Allen has been through that once with Mike Holmgren and is not going to go through that again,” said Fritz Pollard Alliance chairman John Wooten, who has knowledge of the situation. It’s long been believed that if Carroll was to return to the NFL, he’d want GM duties in addition to the head coaching job. A deal no longer appears to be imminent.

by Misfit74 on Jan 8, 2010 9:11 PM PST reply actions

this part makes no sense to me
However, Wooten said Frazier will not interview for the job unless Leiweke first assures Frazier that Carroll will not have total control.

What does Carroll having total control got to do with Frazier interviewing or not? You’d think it’d be Carroll being hired as head coach, since that would be his job? Is Carroll not looking to be coach and instead just president? Or maybe I just shouldn’t over-analyze any article on SI since they probably got it wrong.

by B.B.Finnegan on Jan 8, 2010 10:22 PM PST up reply actions

I think Sando explained it a little better.

Here’s the blog link.

Basically, it means that if the Seahawks are not willing to give Pete Carroll total control, then that means that there is still a decent chance that things could still fall apart. If things have a chance of falling apart with Carroll, then it means that Frazier has enough of a realistic chance of landing the job that it’s worth his time to explore it. If they didn’t guarantee it, then Frazier likely feels that there is no chance Carroll turns the job down, and that means it really was just a token interview.

by Mind of no mind on Jan 8, 2010 11:24 PM PST up reply actions

Now THAT was a good explanation...

That would make sense as to how Carroll “already accepting the job” could still mean bringing in Frazier.

Bring Your Game, Leave Your Name.

Perhaps a sliver of sunlight if this is true.

If Carroll doesn’t have full control, awesome. If this deal falls apart, I will hug strangers.

by abender20 on Jan 8, 2010 9:13 PM PST up reply actions

Why do you care what we pay the coach?

I ask that with no undertones. I understand why we care what the players are paid (salary cap), but surely Paul Allen, and the Seahawks as a company, can afford that kind of money without batting an eye.

by GarethLewin on Jan 8, 2010 9:25 PM PST up reply actions

To me, the contract means two things.

Firstly, it means the team is just that committed to the idea of Pete Carroll that they are willing to pay him in that manner. That confirms my lack of faith in Leiweke and Allen with respect to managing the success of the team.

Secondly, it makes it that much more unlikely that they’ll fire him quickly should he do a horrible job.

by abender20 on Jan 8, 2010 9:29 PM PST up reply actions

Please!!!

Again if Seattle hires a good GM (Ross or Schneider) then I can live with Carroll, but I’d still rather pass on him.

Frazier needs to wow the shit out of them on Saturday.

thank god

that is good to hear, almost makes me think that they are serious about finding a GM and not just letting Carroll pick his friend.

After listening to this I wish Mora and his staff got one more year.

Excellent podcast and probably (and sadly) 100% accurate. I don’t really have a problem with Pete Carroll, per se, but the thinking that goes along with hiring Carroll is what’s so troubling.

Amazing how the reactions have changed over the past 12 hours.

Mora gets fired – “Hallelujah and Praise the Lord!”

Carroll likely to be hired as replacement – “OK… I can get behind that… kinda…”

Carroll likely to be hired as coach/GM/President/some hybrid of the three, DeCosta drops out of GM running, Kirwin likely to come on board – “Oh shit, we’re going to suck for the next 5 years.”

I have an immediate relative who is a supervisor at ODOT in Portland

I don’t want this post to turn into a tell all book, but trust me, potholes should be the least of your worries.

I agree that a heavy RFA offseason could lead to an increased trade market. I’m not sure how much value Kerney/Branch/Grant would have, simply because their contracts would have to be restructured to be considered. Of course, I’d trade any of them for a late round pick. Hasselbeck still has a decent reputation around the league. I could see Holmgren offering a 4th or 5th for him. Trufant’s reputation has taken a beating. His value is probably a mid-rounder at best. I’d have mixed feelings about trading Tru, losing him would be a blow to the secondary and it would almost be like playing to win the Jake Locker sweepstakes.

The only player we have that I think has significant trade value is Housh. Housh was pretty much every bit the player we thought he’d be, isn’t on a ridiculous contract, and if shopped, might be the best WR available period depending if other teams shop WR. I could see Housh getting a 2nd rounder easily.

Regarding Carroll and the 3-4

This makes no sense to me. (In the other thread, I listed some reasons why this isn’t good timing to switch to 3-4, but that’s just my opinion). Carroll is a defensive coach who once worked with Monte Kiffin. For almost his entire career at USC, he ran a 4-3 Under defense. He experimented in 2006 with 3-4 but quickly reverted back. The 4-3 is what Carroll knows and claims to know well. So whats the point of hiring a defensive coach to run a system he has almost no familiarity with? That seems fairly audacious considering that Carroll is already dealing with a high number of unknown elements.

I’m not as down on hiring Carroll as most, but that is really dependent on the GM situation. If Carroll is allowed to focus on coaching while a real GM handles the GM duties, the downside of this hiring would be far less than most think. Carroll strikes me as Mora+ as a coach, a motivator type, (although Mora always struck me as an idiot- whereas Carroll seems clever, shrewd, and sly).

One big positive to Carroll is he might bring some USC coaches with him. In particular, Ken Norton Jr. (USC’s LB coach) could be a nice get. He’s done a fantastic job coaching and developing USC’s LB, which have been sensational in the NFL the last 5 years. Seattle really needs a good LB coach to reign in Curry and Hawthorne.

Carroll seems like the kind of perfect non-impact coach. I don’t think he’ll help much or hurt much. Its the struggle for the GM position which concerns me far more at this point. It seems like Allen is smart enough to know our GM should be someone who is qualified and experienced. So until our new GM becomes official, I’m holding out hope.

by kearly on Jan 8, 2010 10:23 PM PST reply actions

Guys

I know many of you have always been Seahawks fans, so I want to point something out for you that we wouldn’t expect most Hawks fans to recognize. Pete Carroll is what people call a winner. He wins championships. He is not a retread, like most coaches. His record is actually on par with holmgren when you compare his old record on teams that are on the decline, vs Mike’s win ratio here. Go look yourself, both are only just over .500. That was 10 years ago, and this man has learned and grown. He is no Holmgren or Mora.

This coach, knows how to win and has never been able to make personnel calls in the past. He played in a division, during a day the AFC East was extremely competitive as well. He is more in line with what Jimmy Johnson did, vs. Erickson. Mark my words, you will see what will appear to be strange moves, a huge wave of young talent and veterens you may like get cut.

We need a person like this to reboot the roster and schemes. We need someone familiar w/ college talent, and someone who knows how to maximize this talent using schemes college kids are familiar with and modify them to fit the NFL. He will bring fresh ideas. We need Pete Carroll and his staff to come in and build something fresh. He gets 3 years.

by GnarlyHawk on Jan 8, 2010 10:36 PM PST reply actions   1 recs

How many national championships did he win?

Two? You make it sound like more. Unless you’re talking about Pac-10 championships, which are… not quite as prestigious or telling.

by chrees on Jan 8, 2010 10:41 PM PST up reply actions

His record

Speaks for itself. He is a dominant force in college, his players are top draft picks and dominant forces in the NFL. 2 National titles is nothing to slouch at and the PAC 10 championships, thats more than winning – thats dominating. Again, most of you don’t understand winners, Hawks fans are more familiar with losers apparantly. Every complaining fan on this site needs to chill, I’ve seen your comments and ideas. Horrible, unfounded and whining.

by GnarlyHawk on Jan 8, 2010 10:46 PM PST up reply actions   1 recs

Is his success based upon his abilities as a coach

or as a recruiter? A lot of players he recruits end up in the NFL. Is that due to him or their natural ability? What happened to USC this year when their team talent didn’t outclass everyone else in the PAC-10? They were a mediocre team.

So is Pete Carroll “the coach” a success, or is Pete Carroll “the recruiter”? If it’s the latter, and a lot of people would say that it is, then how will that recruiting ability really help in the NFL?

Pete Carroll gets the best out of high schools around the country. How will that skill help him in the NFL?

by chrees on Jan 8, 2010 10:51 PM PST up reply actions

USC was an above mediocore team

USC was 9-4. Mediocre was Washington or UCLA. And the only reason USC was that (ahem) bad was because Mark Sanchez left and they were forced to start a freshman quarterback. A freshman quarterback. How many college teams succeed and win a bowl game with a freshman quarterback? Not many. It isn’t all talent, it’s recognizing talent and using it appropriately. Seattle has an above talented defense, yet they’re still near bottom of the league almost every year. Or maybe they’re just not that talented.

How this helps him in the NFL, I don’t know if it will if he’ll be a great NFL coach, and that’s a question worth asking and debating I agree there, but don’t question Carroll unbelievable success on the college level. I’ve seen this a few times today and it’s completely ridiculous. You can’t just remove coaching and say USC would dominate with no head. Yes, Carroll finds talent, but yes, he also uses it wisely. It isn’t one or the other. Actually the debate on talent vs coaching is one that’s been on here a lot, but that argument can be made against any coach. Ok, I’ve been drinking and am now rambling, I’d better stop.

I have never totally bought into the "recruiter" thing entirely.

Just having pieces doesn’t make you a champion. You have to have the schemes that work well for your personnel.

I did some research and ran some numbers

During one of Carroll’s many NFL stints, including the NYJ/NE head coaching jobs, and being defensive coordinator for the 49er’s, he was DB’s coach for Vikes, ‘85-89. In those five years in Minnesota, that defense averaged 25 interceptions a season. In 1988, his fourth year of developed rapport with the secondary, they had 36 picks. This year the Seahawks had 13. Last year, with Mora still a DB’s coach, we had nine.

In the five seasons before Carroll arrived, they averaged far less than 25 interceptions (17.6) a season, and after Carroll left, the interception average dropped to less than 22 (21.8) interceptions a year. So it is a fact (though a blunt, nigh-meaningless one) that the Vikings secondary had more interceptions with Carroll than without him.

Obviously these stats aren’t proof that Carroll does fine in the NFL. Not every interception is performed by a DB, interceptions alone aren’t the end-all, be-all of good secondary play, and there’s no tangible measurement for showing how his coaching influenced the influx of interceptions. I acknowledge that these kinds of numbers aren’t Pete has a positive overall record as an NFL head coach, but so did Mora before Seattle.

Yes, he is a player’s coach, and used to the college system. But maybe that’s not all. Maybe he does understand NFL defenses and players. It’s not ridiculous to ponder.

by Anticitizen_One on Jan 9, 2010 6:40 AM PST reply actions

That was Joey Browner's peak, and he was a tremendous ball hawk.

I don’t remember who else was on that defensive backfield, but it might be correlation not causation.

Not that I don’t love Carrol’s potential, just sayin’.

Cardinals will reign supreme for the next 5 years.

Pete Carroll might not survive that long either— especially if its Valley Forge time. Jim Mora Jr. showed that there isn’t any George Washington in him to lead this team thru winter.
