Seahawks @ Bye Week Open Thread

I'm really upset we're playing the bye week on the road this time around. The worst part is the Seahawks aren't even on TV, and we can only watch the game through our imaginations. Right now Matt Hasselbeck is being dominated by velocity but the lines are doing an excellent job against oxygen. Justin Forsett broke one and busted into the second level but got tripped up by the wind for a gain of 23.

Enough about them, there are some decent but not outstanding games to watch today. I got Broncos/Ravens, Packers/Redskins, and Titans/Cowboys. The nightcap is Eagles/49ers and honestly I can see San Francisco winning that comfortably.

With no Seahawks you must root against San Fran, Arizona, and St. Louis at all costs. If you don't your house will be egged.

So both CBS and FOX have "Rams over Lions" as upset picks

If we ignore the betting line and team records….it’s still not an upset.

Probably not in a critical matchup against the Steelers

but against another opponent, I could see it factoring into the decision. Or maybe Wilson isn’t up to speed with the defense.

by John Morgan on Oct 10, 2010 11:53 AM PDT up reply actions

That's a possibility

but isn’t that cost (the difference between a 4th and a 5th) very minor in comparison to having a much stronger secondary against division rivals?

And if they wanted to avoid the increased cost, wouldn’t it be a better idea to do that later in the season (when they had a better idea of their playoff prospects) or against teams with weaker passing offenses like TB or CLE?

by Greetings from the Lord Humongous! on Oct 10, 2010 11:50 AM PDT up reply actions

Depends how much the Steelers use three wide receiver sets with Batch as quarterback

That’s a run first offense without Roethlisberger, so I can see not sweating the nickelback or stressing something else, like special teams contribution or run defense.

I think you would sit Wilson while he’s still learning the system. Some teams “red shirt” players while they learn the system.

Here's my understanding of the rules

(as described before ratification by John Clayton):

©ompetition committee co-chairman Rich McKay said. “We would propose language that would say that if a receiver has completed the catch and has not had time to protect himself, a defensive player is prohibited from launching into him in a way that causes the defensive player’s helmet, face mask, shoulder or forearm to forcibly strike the receiver’s head.”

So, I asked Sando about comparing Mirer to Bradford, and he replied thusly:

I didn’t really study Mirer back then, but from what I remember, Bradford would appear light years ahead in decision making, leadership, accuracy, etc. But I did not study Mirer.

Looking at the splits, Mirer had one TD and two INT in third-and-long situations as a rookie. Bradford had two third-and-10 TDs against Seattle alone and entered this game with 91.3 rating in that situation.

But it’s really early for Bradford. So far, so good. Mirer had some good moments as a rookie too.

by Greetings from the Lord Humongous! on Oct 10, 2010 2:48 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think that's true

Curry pass rushes a ton. He’s a nickel DE.

by John Morgan on Oct 10, 2010 2:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Or, if Orakpo pass rushed more

not so much more to explain the difference in their sack totals.

by John Morgan on Oct 10, 2010 2:49 PM PDT up reply actions

As I understand it

The Redskins signed Orakpo because he was a great pass-rusher and then tried to put him in position to use his skills as a pass-rusher (while incorporating him into their 4-3 scheme).

We signed Curry because he was a great LB and tried to make him do a bunch of different things before deciding that he was getting confused and his job needed to be simplified. This year, his role is being clarified and he’s being sent into the backfield more (despite a lot of production in that regard while in college), but Curry still probably has fewer pass-rushing opportunities than Orakpo.

I wouldn’t want to argue that Curry is a better pass-rusher, but its not totally fair to compare their sack totals (given the responsibilities they’ve been given.

It was around as a comedy site tied to sports, and used to link to articles found on blogs around the web that were worth reading, both comedic and serious.

Now they basically link to their own gawker sites and traditional news sources and give occasional op-ed commentary.

During Leitch’s time is really was a well written creative unique place. It was the national equivalent of Field Gulls in that a great author can elevate a site beyond mere “blog.” But alas, they’ve turned into tabloid journalism.

One part of it I do get— if they don’t point it out, nobody at ESPN does. Quis custodiet ipsos custodes. However, they seem to revel in the tabloid aspects far too much since Daulerio took over. I do think it was going that way anyway, and Leitch got out while the getting was good, with reputation intact and without the stink of tabloid on him.

The smart audiences have gone online

When I was a kid, 60 Minutes could gain market share by appealing to an audience that no one else was serving. But internet news, analysis, and discussion can operate profitably even appealing to a narrow band of intelligent readers.

Now, smart audiences access broadcast only for content that requires broadcast (e.g., sports). So television and radio “information” content are left serving only the illiterate, and have adjusted their style accordingly.

I'm surprised at some of the responses. Some people are so black and white.

If someone gave me a preseason projection of 2-14 or 10-6 for the Hawks, I wouldn’t say they were crazy. Even when were were winning a few years ago, I wouldn’t laugh at a 6-10 projection.

by LantermanC on Oct 10, 2010 4:02 PM PDT up reply actions

I would.

The NFL shouldn’t base which teams get seen based on which teams have the biggest markets. I know that it makes them more MONEY to do so, but it’s certainly not “fair”.

by djafrot on Oct 10, 2010 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, the NFL does have revenue sharing.

It does try to make sure that all teams in the league have an equal opportunity to shine. I would think that they are also interesting in making sure that this extends to the average fan’s ability to see a wide variety of teams play. But it clearly doesn’t.

I realize it’s a business. But so is the NFL. And if the NFL wants to go the way of the MLB, where only a few teams get any attention, that’s their prorogative… but it’s dangerous.

by djafrot on Oct 10, 2010 2:34 PM PDT up reply actions

They should focus on the best matchups.

Not Just big markets. The fact that the Hawks havent had a night game in a few years is ridiculous.

Change starts when there's a reason to change

good ideas like serving large markets that draw big ratings tend to last.

by John Morgan on Oct 10, 2010 2:57 PM PDT up reply actions

I'd argue that it's in the NFL's interests to ensure "viewing parity".

Not the networks’. Obviously they want ratings. But if the NFL wants to ensure that it doesn’t go the way of the MLB, they need to ensure that smaller markets don’t feel left out.

I’ve always admired the NFL for going against the grain and taking steps to ensure parity between the teams/markets. The networks? Fuck them.

by djafrot on Oct 10, 2010 3:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Can anyone explain to me...

why Fox doesn’t have a national broadcast at 1 pm?

I’m watching Tennessee/Dallas (CBS) because it’s the only game on, while my local Fox station is broadcasting poker. Why don’t they feed the Saints & Cards? There’s no production cost (the game has to be broadcast in some markets).

I can only guess two reasons:
One, maybe CBS has ponied up the money to the NFL for an exclusive national broadcast slot. But that means they’d have to earn as much from one game as CBS + Fox would earn from two.

Two, maybe Fox and the NFL are playing chicken and nobody will flinch. I.e., their contract allows the NFL to set a price for a national broadcast, and Fox won’t pay that price because they don’t think the revenue will justify it. But that seems like a stupidly-written contract that hurts both sides (it could be written so that Fox pays a fee based on viewership, protecting them from risk).

by Jason_D on Oct 10, 2010 3:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Don't they alternate weeks?

Every market gets 3 games during the day on Sunday (in the absence of a blackout), one on Sunday night and one on Monday?

by Greetings from the Lord Humongous! on Oct 10, 2010 3:34 PM PDT up reply actions

That sounds correct, but why?

Why alternate the national broadcast in the afternoon slot instead of just having two national broadcasts? Wouldn’t that generate more revenue?

Third guess: They want to limit availability to push people into expensive cable/satellite packages.

Just not the way this team seems to be going. Mebane broke in by replacing a Tampa 2 one-tech, Darby, and that position just doesn’t exist on this defense anymore.

I've been thinking

that our hybrid 3-4/4-3 might be a prelude to a full-blown 3-4 and Mebane might be a little short to be a great 3-4 end. Or the guys in charge might just realize that he’s a special talent and find a way to fit him into the scheme.

by Greetings from the Lord Humongous! on Oct 10, 2010 3:20 PM PDT up reply actions

They don't?

I would have guessed that smaller is better, because there’s less wear on the knees, ankles, and back.

Unless there’s sort of a statistical bias because smaller guys only make the NFL with superior speed, then lose viability when the speed flags, whereas a big guy can keep playing with a combination of size and technique.

He makes absolutely horrible decisions. And he just doesn’t have that ability to lead his team to a comeback victory.

by Coach Owens on Oct 10, 2010 4:45 PM PDT up reply actions

31-46, 406 yards, 3 TD 3 INT.

But one INT was bounced up by his backup TE, another was deflected at the line, and the last one came when the offense had a field to go and less than a minute left, and he just might have been forcing.

I’ll put it this way— I would KILL for him to be our QB now, and if he isn’t elite he is at least in the conversation and knocking at the door.

He was harassed all game long. I actually think the Cowboys weakness is a dreadfully overrated offensive line and possibly a playbook by an offensive coordinator that underwhelms.

He looked pretty darn good in this game most the game, as he generally does. Perhaps he lacks whatever mojo it is that helps teams play from behind, but he’s a damn site better than pretty much anyone in the league outside of the “big 4” elites.

Rivers
Schaub
Romo
Big Ben

The Chargers have a great offense and defense

All three of their losses can be pinned on special teams. My unprofessional opinion is that special teams is less dependent on personnel (than O or D), so the problems can be corrected by a combination of practice and conservative ST play.

But right now, I think we can say the Jets are good without any caveats.

by Jason_D on Oct 10, 2010 5:46 PM PDT up reply actions

So... anybody else think Carroll will go Wildcat?
  1. - Michael Robinson throws pretty well for a running back (or whatever he’s supposed to be)
  1. - The acquisition of Lynch gives Seattle the necessary inside runner
  1. - Hasselbeck is… Hasselbeck
  1. - We have a bye week to learn the plays.
  1. - Chicago has a good run defense, but their pass defense is downright brutal (2nd best in the league at 6.0 yards/attempt). The surest way to keep Julius Peppers from lying on top of the quarterback is to not have a quarterback in.

by Jason_D on Oct 10, 2010 5:34 PM PDT reply actions

Chicago's pass defense isn't as great as it looks, according to DVOA.

13th best in the NFL which is only five spots better than the Seahawks’ pass defense.

by Coach Owens on Oct 10, 2010 5:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Interesting. Thank you.

I popped over to Football Outsiders and entered each team’s pass defense and rush defense efficiency rating into a spreadsheet. Then I created a column showing the difference, to see if it would reveal a favorable run or pass strategy for any given team.

Not surprisingly, the league average was 14.7% in favor of passing (that is, it would be 14.7% more efficient to pass against the average team, meaning the average defense was less effective against the pass). Chicago had a rushing defense efficiency of -8.8% and a passing defense at 6.1%, for a difference 14.9% in favor of rush defense (or 14.9% in favor of passing against them), which is almost dead average.

Seattle had the biggest differential, at 47.7% in favor of passing against them. There were nine teams whose numbers suggested a rush-heavy strategy would be favorable against their defense. Six of these were over 10%:
GB = -33.6%
PHI = -24.6%
NYG = -22.0%
BAL = -17.2%
SD = -15.1%
CIN = -12.1%

But, even though Chicago’s rush vs pass defense is league-average, I think it would be worth trying a few wildcat plays with our personnel to see if the package creates challenges via unfamiliarity (and to give their pass rushers something else to think about). But if it doesn’t work, we certainly shouldn’t press it.

I buying two tickets online for the Seahawks game against Arizona on the 24th. I’m trying to decide between two electronically delivered ones in Upper Level 342 and Upper Level Endzone 319 that need to be Fedexed. How good is each section, and how important is getting electronic delivery (or, how reliable are Stub Hub sellers about mailing tickets when you need them? Wallace is hurt, Delhomme might still be (and he sucks). I know this has been brought up before, but if any team in the league might have an interest in Hass, it’s Cleveland. Fourth rounder?

Hass for a 4th-rounder, and Wallace

Then we play Wallace and raise the value of the conditional pick we’re getting from Cleveland. If Holmgren balks, we throw in Locklear.

I can’t imagine Scheider and Carroll trading Hasselbeck while they still have hope for the season. Especially if there’s no quarterback in the return trade, as that would leave us with only one QB on the roster.
