Potential LEO for 2011.
Chris Clemons is playing well, but I think most people agree that the team should be looking at options for the LEO position in the draft and through free agency. I was thinking of players that would be a perfect fit for the LEO position and one guy with tremendous potential came to my mind:
Lawson is free agent (although he might be a restricted free agent) and has already asked the 49ers for a new contract, so he could also be a trade candidate. Lawson's potential has always excited me and reminded me of Julian Peterson. I know Lawson has been a bit of a disappointment in San Fran, but if he came to Seattle and was just asked to simply rush the passer I wonder if he could thrive.
Lawson was a name that caught my eye and seems like a good fit for the LEO, so I figured I'd throw this out there for discussion. Thoughts?

Actually Lawson has been a monster when healthy...

Has he? His number seem a bit underwhelming. Had a very good 2008, rest of the years seems pretty average at best.
No kidding... nothing like making a blanket statement, using a suplerative like "monster" without having researched it eh?
Isn’t it funny how sometimes we are left with a feeling about someone (usually from a game or two that was either good or bad) and it sticks with us as law?
I stand corrected.

No worries.
I wasn’t even sure you we’re wrong, I haven’t watched a lot of him so I thought maybe he was doing a lot that wasn’t showing up in the box score.
I should have consulted you before printing my self-damning retraction...
yeah yeah.. thats it! He’s a monster doing things you cant see. I like it.
No it’s actually a good lesson for me. I normally am a “researcher”. In this case I failed miserably. I actually wish John (or someone) would use this as an example of how conflicts can be avoided by owning up to one’s (er… stoopid) mistakes.

What's everyone's opinion on Merriman?
He was essentially cut today, so if he could be convinced to come up here, that’s free talent (free as in from a trading perspective, we’d still have to pay the man.)
He is the sort of player we never would have looked at in years past.
… but this FO is much more open to signing talented headcases.
Considering the severity of the injury he sustained in 2008, the fact that he wasn’t full strength in 2009 it not in and of itself much evidence that he has left much on the operating table long-term. The injuries that have sidelined him this year have been the nagging sort- not related to the injury exactly, but quite possibly contributed to by compensating for the knee, not having had proper conditioning due to rehab, etc.
The benefits of joining Seattle for Merriman are mostly that he could compete for a starting job right away, it’s a good scheme fit that should help his stats, and he joins a well above average defense. On the downside, the Hawks are not legit contenders.
If I am permitted to get a bit more speculative…. I think Merriman will return to stud status at the end of this season and stay there for a bunch of years. It is pretty easy to explain Merriman’s dip in play via injuries and psychological factors. In the right situation, I would be surprised if he did not produce. This is why I would love to have him on the team. I would be afraid of an expensive long-term deal because their is no guarantee he will overcome his psychological issues.
If I may say, whatever one thinks of PC’s approach and tendencies as a coach, one thing that is nice is you definitely feel like he can extract value from guys like Merriman, which is huge.
One last point. I think people make too big a deal about Merriman’s first 3 years being steroid-fueled, and that injuries may have permanently lowered his talent level. Merriman’s first 3 years had him on pace to be one of, if not the greatest defensive player ever. Even significant decline would leave Merriman as an above average starter to mild star. That is enormously valuable. If you can get a guy like that without needing to spend a pick, and at his age, you gotta give it consideration.

A tremendous talent who was awesome before his injuries.
I am open to giving him a shot, but his knee issues, possible steroid use, and dating lifestyle do cause some concern.
Covets: Mark Ingram, Marcell Dareus, Prince Amukamara, Rodney Hudson, and Owen Marecic.
