simply amazing
I had no idea about the “Oher like” childhood he had.

Me either
I don’t remember hearing about any of that stuff when he was at USC. I was a sophomore when he was a freshman and the way he transformed our team was just amazing.
Also of note, not in the article, I believe he finished his USC degree during his time away from the NFL.
To improve, they should try to become the musical southern cal of the west. - bRuins Nation poster on the Stanford band.
Great story, but holy shit that article is written poorly.
Problems with subject-verb agreement, strange pluralization of some words, or vice versa.
ESPN LA must not have great editors.

I noticed the same thing
In some cases, words were misspelled or worse, misspelled into actual words (“cut” into “curt”) so the spell checker didn’t work. That whole organization will be irrelevant in a decade if they keep doing this.
Claire Farnsworth articles are also littered with errors
You think somebody writing for the Seahawks at least gets the right Seahawk in certain plays for articles.

Clare.
Ironic isn’t it? (I kid because I care.)

I disagree
There are definately some minor errors, but I think it was written beautifully. Great interviews, good flow, fascinating story – I think it’s good journalism man.
I'm a fan of the Ducks, Seahawks, Trailblazers, and... this elephant.
The flow and the handling of the topic were good, but the sentence structure and the transition from point to point
made it a bit of a tough read. The “in medias res” approach was very poorly done. Hard to tell what time period any given part to the story was placed, or the relation to each other.

Only on Field Gulls
can someone get away with using “in medias res” without flinching, blinking, or even worrying that people won’t get it. I’m fond of the phrase, its origin, and the idea it expresses, nice to see it used in relation to football.
As for the article, the first sentence was klunky, after that I was interested enough in the narrative to overlook the style & grammar.
Anybody know where I can get the recent AGS article.
I don’t have insider.
Thanks for posting that.
Though geez, you’d think they could talk a little more about him in his time here in Seattle. It is the most important part, for cryin’ out loud.
The story is about where he was, not where he is. His just being here now MAKES the story of the past relevant and interesting.
Besides— we’re at FieldGulls. What on earth could ESPN tell you about Mike Williams as a Seahawk that you haven’t either already observed for yourself or heard through local sources?

I would say that a good half of that article could have been about how BMW turned the corner here.
Otherwise it’s kind of a dead-end narrative.
I didn't realize he had an "Earl Thomas" first and second year in college.
Or that he was so important to PC’s coaching/recruiting career at USC.
Amazing story, all the way around.
try
posting the article in a google search then clicking on cache. works on the block wall @ my job.

WOW
I didn’t realize how much has happened in Williams’ life up to this point. It makes it all that much more great to root for the guy…
Can’t wait to watch his continual dominance in the NFL. Get him a TD Matt!
Ka-Kaaa!
Nice to know the story behind BMFMW
I guess I’d always assumed he took the money and Pacman’d.
Poor Millen, in a way, as much as he sucked, he also had some ‘bad luck’ with his picks.
Remember that this was what, the third straight first round pick the Lions spent on a receiver.
Sure, maybe there was some bad luck with BMW not working out, but he also hadn’t played in over a year. It was a terrible pick. You can’t overstate how bad Millen was.

Yeah I think BMW was the 2nd.
Charles Rogers, BMW, Calvin Johnson.
by jacobstevens on Oct 20, 2010 12:15 PM PDT up reply actions
He was the 3rd
Rodgers, Roy Williams, BMW. Calvin Johnson wasn’t part of the trio — he came later.
by Suburban Shocker on Oct 20, 2010 12:20 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah, they skipped a whole year before drafting another one!

that's a good demotivational title
after multiple failures, success pretty much becomes a statistical inevitability.
by jubelthebear on Oct 21, 2010 8:48 AM PDT up reply actions
And he was a reach in the first place
Most observers didn’t have Williams pegged as a top-10 pick heading into the draft; the majority view was that he was a late first-rounder, and some observers had him in the second or third round. That’s the real problem with the pick. I wouldn’t have a problem with drafting WRs three years in a row if they’re worth it — matchup nightmares and all that. Reaching for the third one is another matter altogether.
The fact that Williams didn’t even live up to third-round status is Millen’s bad luck, for sure. So is the way Charles Rodgers’s career went.

BMFMW isn't terribly happy about the write-up...
His latest tweet:
BMW_USC 1: I have no comment on that espn story.. And Matt Millen=LIAR.. Yall have a good day

Hmm, weird.
Something tells me that might be about Millen’s version of the last convo, after he was traded to the Raiders.
by jacobstevens on Oct 20, 2010 12:19 PM PDT up reply actions
Millen clearly overgeneralizes a bit..
He must have been putting in SOME effort to catch 29 balls his rookie year.
by michaelfox99 on Oct 20, 2010 12:19 PM PDT up reply actions
Interesting.
I actually thought he came off pretty well through the story.

I don't know...
I feel like for an athlete, namely somebody as proud as BMW seems to be, it would be a little embarrassing to have the nation peer into your life in such a way. Obviously it’s crazy respectable how much he’s had to go through to get to where he is, but having anybody other than him tell the story has to be a little uncomfortable.
Field Gulls: my anti-PFT.
Yeah, I have no idea what it must be like to have so many people peering into your "private" life.
The thought of it terrifies me. I just meant that my opinion of him became slightly more favorable after reading the article.
by It's Good To Be King on Oct 20, 2010 1:00 PM PDT up reply actions
That's one of the problems with pride.
I could imagine if someone told a story on my life — which would be interesting to no one — that I would read it and think, they found an angle, and worked it too hard. The angle in that story isn’t the definition of Mike Williams’ life. But it sounds like it is. I can imagine some distaste for such a thing.

A nice lesson
Live your life assuming someone’s going to write about it someday; don’t have that “he ballooned up to 286 pounds and they had to call his parents” phase. (Or, if you will, minutes 18 through 24 of every Behind the Music episode.)

Vasilii?
Hey Vasilii, I read that you live in Holland, (Leiden?) I do as well (currently Z’meer, in about a month i will head back to Den Haag (born & raised)… this may sound a bit sad, but I am the only one of my friends who care anything about Football, instead of voetbal(soccer). Maybe we can hook up some time and watch a Hawk game (I got gamepass, i bet you do to….love it, 3rd year) not gay or anything..just searching for some fellow hawks fan here in Holland.
Ik hoor het wel.
Maarten
I burst out laughing at this
Maybe we can hook up some time and watch a Hawk game (I got gamepass, i bet you do to….love it, 3rd year) not gay or anything..
Well I was once in the same situation
I just converted a bunch of dudes around me to the sport :P
Still, send John a mail to forward to my address and we can get in touch. I ain’t posting my mail here tho’. Too much manlove in this place o_O

This article makes me nervous that BMW will revert
I hope to god he doesn’t, but if he one day decided to start trying again, he could one day decide to stop trying again. Keep those contracts short, Schneider!
Honestly, I don't see it
He genuinely seems hungry.
Granted – hunger got him into this position in the first place.
… see what I did there?
Om num num num!!
Karma police, arrest this man.

I would hope that his wife and 2 young children will help keep him on the right path
The year off before getting drafted obviously had a huge effect on him, on that took many years to overcome. Hopefully, BMW doesn’t want to end up in the same situation again.
"Mike wants to be the best at what he does but only when he wants to."
Could this be the reason we kept trade feelers out for Marshall and Jackson all off season, but never pulled the trigger? Maybe those trade talks were Pete being a magnificent bastard of a motivator…

Admitting though, it'd be pretty weird of someone else shows up every time Mike Williams shows up
I mean, it’d get kind of annoying if, say, Paula Abdul shows up whenever Mike Williams shows up
by B.B.Finnegan on Oct 21, 2010 10:38 AM PDT up reply actions 2 recs
Why Paula Abdul?
Why not Stephen Hawking or Jeff Dunham or Dave the Barbarian?
Though they sink through the Sea, they shall rise again...Death shall have no dominion... Over the Hawks that is. May they reach unadulterated glory and earn the metonym of "Phoenixes".
Stephen Hawking showing up
with Mike Williams every time would be awesome.
