Matt Hasselbeck Out Versus Giants
Danny O'Neil reports that Matt Hasselbeck will miss Sunday's matchup against the Giants. Charlie Whitehurst will start. Zac Robinson is the backup, meaning we'll have to cut someone before Sunday to make room in the active roster.
Pete Carroll adds "disappointed for Matt but this is best for his health. we're really looking forward to seeing Charlie go to work!"

Was just about to post it.
Good thing I hit refresh. Well, it’ll be an interesting Sunday.
Honestly, I'm excited.
However, I feel bad because this offense is so battered and bruised and the Giants are so good we’re setting Whitehurst up for a very tough day. I believe this will only fuel the Hassel-Hurst feud or whatever the cool kids are calling it now a days.
!
I don’t think MH’s injury was thought to be that bad, so hopefully this partly an endorsement of CW. It might be a vote of no-confidence in our O-line against NYG, in which case, ouch?
It could be as simple as Pete being overly optimistic with injuries during his pressers.
I’d say that’s the likely explanation.
He seems to has a habit of de-emphasizing injuries.
Both times Russell was hurt, he was listed as day to day. We know how the first one turned out.
The second, he’s yet to practice in his second week.
Pete just needs to be more up front about injuries. I’d rather he say “we don’t know” or “can’t be sure” than things that suggest players can come back more quickly than they realistically can.

it would be great for Hawk fans if Pete was more up front.
But I don’t think he owes us that, nor do I think its wise in regards to our oponents.

Per Carroll:
disappointed for Matt but this is best for his health. we’re really looking forward to seeing Charlie go to work!
The league is stepping up awareness in regards to concussions.
If any player is reported as having concussion-like symptoms this year, it doesn’t surprise me in the slightest to see them ruled out the following week.
Matt failed the health test and the coach has zero input on if a player can play even if he is borderline.
It was decided by the medical staff.
Eat shit bum!
Wouldn't that suck if right as we were about to sign Robinson to the roster, some other team swooped down
and signed him?
Wasn't Okung back at practice
I haven’t been keeping up, what’s the news on Mebane, Thurmond and Jennings?
Polumbus looked pretty hurt coming out of that game
I have zero insider knowledge, but I wouldn’t count on him being available on Sunday.
I mean, honestly, if Charlie looks half-way decent, I may start to come around on him. O-line is real thin, BMW is dinged up, Tate won’t play…
Butler, Slot Machine, and Obomanu (and Carlson if he doesn’t have to block all day). At least there’s some talent there, actually.
Mebane not practicing again?
I’m now really concerned he has a serious injury.
Michael Robinson leads the Seahawks in completion percentage, yards-per-attempt, and QB rating.
I worry too
This was made out to be a mild calf injury and I’ve heard reports over the weeks that he would be back quickly and yet nothing. Anyone have any real insight into what’s up??

No kidding.
He’s probably thinking “thanks, Pete, for putting me out there against one of the best pass rushes in the league, and behind a line missing half it’s starters”.
I would hope if he's been a backup this long, he has confidence
And is thinking “Thank God I finally have a shot! I’m going to fucking rock the house on Sunday!”

against
the best front four in the NFC? And by far the toughest competition the Seahawks have faced at home?
Compounded by Whitehurst's awareness issues.
But sure, I hope he’s fearless, I hope he’s competitive and is dead-set on shocking the league.
To use Mike Sando's words,
the Seahawks run a different offense with Whitehurst. NY won’t have good game tape to work with.
Likely doesn’t matter, but it’s possible.
injuries aside.
I’m excitied to see what plays we run with Charlie a QB.
by sadface on Nov 4, 2010 7:15 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Not too many plays in the old playbook
…when you have four turnstiles spinning to delay the league’s best D-line for all of a half second every play. Pretty hard to compete when you are on your 3rd string across much of the line.
Shotgun plus quick hitters I guess….
I hope Charlie gets some good practice throwing the ball away quickly this week, because holding it for more than a beat or two could result in his first start being his last.
I understand he could end up running for his life the entire game.
But as bad as it was for Matt against the Raiders, he had chances, we ran real, actual plays.
This actually touches on probably my greatest micro-interest within the greatr macro-interest of seeing how Whitehurst does.
Specifically, will there be any kind of pressure-beating tactics employed? Screens? Hopeful, but don’t really expect it. Hot route slants? Expected. Misdirection on rollouts? Can practically guarantee it.
Most likely, Charlie will show ability and liability. Awareness, slow reading, staring down reads, some poor decision making, lacking restraint. Mitigating those will go a long way, but that’s not always possible. Giving him bailouts when great protection is missing is what I think is the foundation of giving him a chance to develop like Tony Romo. Without it I fear the liabilities will quickly become offense-debilitating.

Yeah, sure. You don't get to the NFL without having some confidence, right?
Plus he’s never been on the receiving end of a regular season, all-pro sack. He doesn’t know to be scared yet!
I am going to come into your house at night and rec up the place.
Can't root for injuries,
but at least the game will be more exciting (and by that I mean even if he’s worse, at least it will be interesting to see how he’ll perform).

We needed this
The Hasselbeck fans won’t have much to complain about because he’s literally unable to play. The Whitehurst fans will finally get their day in the sun. Those of us who don’t care either way get to read a game day thread without every incomplete pass turning into a drawn-out referendum on our quarterback situation.
That may sound snarky but I am genuinely happy that when we have bad plays we will be able to analyze it in the context of a guy we’ve basically never seen. When Hasselbeck fucks up a throw there’s no question of “is there still promise?” Anyway, etc. etc. you get my point, woo.
This is NOT the way I wanted it to happen.
This is not the team I wanted it to happen against.
That being said, I’m hoping this is a Wally Pip kind of a moment.

Don't want to necessarily concede defeat, but...
Not knowing the status of other guys, I would say go ahead and not chance it with Okung and Mebane as well.
Worst case- we’re 4-4 and losing the tie breaker to St Louis. The season then almost starts over and we have more of the main components back healthy at Arizona.
Good luck Clipboard Jesus!
I always make a private prediction, somewhat detailed, for the hell of it, before the season.
Checked back on it for the first time today. I predicted we’d be 4-3 nd get crushed in this game. How we got to 4-3 was still quite different, but yeah, the season ain’t over. We now know we’re not very good, can still be very bad but can still be competitive, too. Any chance at “Very good” is lost IMO but the season and the playoff hopes are not over.
What if?
Charlie has a solid game and gets the ball down-field? Wouldn’t that present an awesome dilemma?
I’m just sayin…
Ka-Kaaa!
That's not an awful dilemna, that's a nice problem to have.

This is what Charlie’s prepared for for four and half years. Time to step up, buddy.
Well, were gonna find out
one way or another.
My Prediction:
Charlie Whithurst reinforces the “New QB in 2011” plan
Absolutely. This is what we need to figure out
Not that he’s going to be given too many chances to throw the ball or that this is an ideal situation to throw him into. But if he looks like a deer caught in headlights the whole game at least that puts us in the right frame of mind (and keeps the Hasselbeck hecklers at bay).
I don’t expect a win Sunday by any stretch, but I here’s to hoping Charlie will get better as the game wears on and we get a glimpse of the future, one way or another.
Well said.

As a quiet Hasselbeck supporter, but a big "let's develop a QB at some point" guy
This makes me happy. Honestly, I wouldn’t mind seeing Zac get in there if the game gets out of hand. Why not? Let’s see some guys try to make some plays and see where we’re at.
I doubt he will in one game.
For many, maybe, but not for me. I hope he does present clarity by the end of the year, though.
I wonder if John wrote a "Whitehurst's First Start" article months ago...
you know, the same way newspapers and news channels have obituaries on standby for Dick Clark and Keith Richards.
but
you did kinda cite the Zorn-Krieg scenario as something that could happen this year with Beck-Hurst. Although Whitehursts start is under different circumstances than Kriegs.

I'm most happy with the fact that Whitehurst is going to play.
And play with a full weeks of practice instead of coming in during the middle of a game.
I was expecting him to come in mid game
And be set up to fail. Now he has the chance of airing it out
Between their pass rush, our offensive line
and Golden Tate in a walking boot, I’m not very excited about the prospects of Whtehurst airing it out.
Butler long
Carlson in the seam. We have our weapons but we might not have the time for a 7 step drop.
I have a pretty low opinion of Butler as a pure deep threat.
Don’t get me wrong, he’ll leave his man in the dust on a double move, but I don’t trust him to win one on one matchups on a go-route with most corners in this league. He doesn’t have the same “it” factor that Tate has when it’s time to jump up and make a play on the ball.
That's a good point.
He’ll learn which formations to hit the ground fastest against.
First pass play of the game is going to be a deep ball. Also I predict Martin to end up with 9 catches.

Epically bad can be explained in a similar way to Matt's struggles.
Injuries to the O-line, bad supporting cast.

I’m rooting for the guy, I really am. But I think it’s basically a given that he’s going to get fucking creamed out there, unless Chester & the Backups go out and play like linemen possessed. This game went from more than likely depressing loss
to interesting. That alone makes me happy.
Though in typical Seattle bad sports luck fashion we start our rookie QB with injuries affecting our offensive line, all of our starting defensive line besides Clemons out, and our biggest starting WR threat injured and not at 100%. Boy, what a way to start the rook.
I hope Charlie survives the game. Gonna be a rough outing for CW.
I really hope
we see an almost new offense and that Bates just brings in a lot of new stuff. His QB is completely different.
Why can't my higher than average expectations ever be met in the football world? Why?

I am really and truly excited about the prospect of Charlie starting
I was really worried about Matt starting, the offense stagnating and watching the QB getting quickly beaten to a pulp. If nothing else, I think Charlie’s first start should be exciting if not successful. I’m ready to see (assuming the OL holds together) a few nice long bombs along with the usual rookie jitters and maybe a lack of touch on the shorter stuff. Here’s hoping Charlie presents us with a reason to start him (beyond not being Matt) and that he’s able to take more than the defense gives him.
Viva la Charlie.
