Ask Revenge of the Birds (again)

Hey guys, me again. You know the drill, just ask some questions and I will answer them. Your guy has already come by our place, so don't worry about starting one over there.

Some of the basics.

Joey Porter has stepped up. He had one sack before the first game against you guys, and he has four in his last three games (Seahawks, Bucs, Vikings).

The defense is maddeningly inconsistent, and I think they are getting worn out from how much time they spend on the field.

LaRod Stephens-Howling should be a Pro Bowler this year.

Derek Anderson is starting to look less bad.

I still miss Kurt Warner, and I hate Brett Favre.

"Gimpie" Wells is more like it.

His knee inflated last week from a “lubricant” injected into it. Missed practice and got the ball only once in Minnesota. The guy hasn’t been right all season.

by hadrarius on Nov 9, 2010 6:06 PM PST up reply actions

Me too.

It sucks that as soon as we get all our receivers back and healthy that Wells is jacked up again.

If we don’t stop Branch this game then we’re

Remember how our offense was still going strong until Okung went down?

I heard he might be coming back this week

Does Paris Lenon's ankle injury concern you?

If he can’t go, does that mean more Schofield and Washington?

by bp42810 on Nov 9, 2010 1:36 PM PST reply actions

It's early in the week.

Have to see how the injury situation is closer to the game. Washington would start if Lenon is out. Don’t know how much play time to expect from Schofield regardless.

by hadrarius on Nov 9, 2010 6:42 PM PST up reply actions

Besides

Schofield is an outside linebacker, Washington is inside.

Stephens-Howling / Washington comparison

Stephens-Howling:

Kick returns – 38 / 1060 yards / 2 TDs * / long 102 / Avg 27.9
(* Had a 3rd TD return denied by a penalty that sadly didn’t even affect the play.)

Punt returns – 0 (How we wish he was our punt returner.)

Rushing – 17 carries / 94 yards / long 30 / Avg 5.5 / 1 TDs

Receiving – 9 receptions / 74 yards / long 13 / 7.9 avg / 0 TDs

1 fumble recovery (on punt coverage team).

Washington:

Kick returns – 24 / 753 yards / long 101 / 2 TDs / Avg 31.4

Punt returns – 4 / 78 yards / 0 TDs / long 43 / Avg 19.5

Rushing – 17 carries / 59 yards / long 21 / Avg 3.5 / 0 TDs

Receiving – 3 catches / 28 yards / long 28 / Avg 9.3 / 0 TDs

1 fumble.

Obviously as a special teams player only those stats should factor into the selection to the pro bowl. The rest I included just to be more rounded. Looks like a tight race. Washington had both his returns for TD in one game. Stephens-Howling has taken it back against three teams. I like his chances of doing it again before the season is over.

by hadrarius on Nov 9, 2010 6:39 PM PST up reply actions

I also like LSH a lot, but he only returned for a TD against 2 teams, not 3.

Nobody is going to care about the one that was called back, unfortunately. I think Leon has had some good returns called back also. It’s part of the game. This is one where we’ll need a few more games to really see who keeps up the performance.

I am going to come into your house at night and rec up the place.

by HititHere on Nov 10, 2010 10:05 AM PST up reply actions

It does matter.

It means that it’s not a fluke or luck or just a bad opponent. The one called back against Atlanta may not go on the books but it factors into the confidence we have that he can and most likely will do it again before the season ends. LaRod has had other big returns too, one for 71 yards that I remember off the top of my head. At this point either guy could break away. We see a hell of a lot to like out of our 7th rounder. You got a steal getting Washington too. I was not happy about that happening at all.

by hadrarius on Nov 10, 2010 8:02 PM PST up reply actions

Think it was against the Seahawks too

He also has the one from the Titans game last year.

I guess I was referring more to the pro-bowl worthiness.

It absolutely makes a difference in determining which guy we “feel” is better. But yeah, gross yardage isn’t as important as return average…though with kick returning, just knowing a guy can bust off a 70 yard return on any kick is frightening.

That said, Leon is explosive and awesome, and this will certainly be an exciting special teams battle.

I am going to come into your house at night and rec up the place.

by HititHere on Nov 11, 2010 10:19 AM PST up reply actions

Voting

of any kind is always skewed by how people feel about the candidate. Sometimes disproportionately. I don’t see how pro bowl voting is any different. For every fan that is actually uses critical analysis in making their choice there scads of them voting for every guy on their favorite team over and over.

I do understand your point though. I can’t vote for someone just because I like them as a player or think they might have potential. It has to be about what they’ve done on the field. Mid season is way to early for pro bowl voting to even start in my opinion. Some guys don’t really start producing until later in the season. Others top out early. I don’t see the point in voting prior to the end of the regular season.

by hadrarius on Nov 12, 2010 6:42 PM PST up reply actions

Gross yardage shouldn't be a factor.

It just means the other team is scoring on you more. But he does look pretty awesome.

Why can't my higher than average expectations ever be met in the football world? Why?

True story.

Last night I had a dream that Stephen-Howling was murdered by crip gang members when they mistook him for a blood, because he was wearing a red cardinals jersey. It was pretty sad.

Kind of strange since I normally would never even think about him, but I did read this post right before bed, so that must have been what planted it in my brain. Thankfully at no point in my dream did I think about how it would help the Seahawks win the game or help Washingtons chance of making the pro bowl, otherwise I’d really need to rethink my priorities in life.

Larry F'n gerald will play a big part in this weeks matchup for Arizona

With Derek Anderson starting as QB Larry will have more balls thrown his way. Last game he had 6 receptions for 72 yards with 2 touchdowns.

No, that was last last game

Last week’s game, he had over a 100 yards, but no TD’s.

We’ve gotten worse, if anything. Though Okung could push us back into having a functional offense…

The return of Cole and/or Mebane should ideally make our defensive unit quite a bit more solid.

How much faith in DA do you have that, if the running game is stuffed, he’ll get pressured into making mistakes?

I’m imagining this is the Hawks’ game plan. Stuff the run, force DA to make bad passes.

Keep in mind, the Cards ran well on us while we still had Red Bryant.

Mebane was missing, though, that might have been it, but looking back at the runs, a lot of it was stretched outside against the strongside, with Lutui pulling and taking out Curry.

by jacobstevens on Nov 12, 2010 5:22 PM PST up reply actions

Every team has played us with the goal of stuffing the run and forcing the QB to carry the team.

They would have to be imbeciles to do otherwise. It doesn’t take a genius to look at Anderson’s history and see how much a threat he is and no one is giving an undrafted rookie a thought. The Seahawks actually played more coverage against us than any other team when Hall was in. It was extremely effective on passing downs too. Hall’s QB rating that game was 13.5.

by hadrarius on Nov 12, 2010 6:47 PM PST up reply actions

How the hell did the Bucs drop 38 points on you AT HOME?!

I know Tampa has been playing well, but not THAT well! They’re nowhere as good as the Giants, who luckily caught us with a ton of injuries.

Ugh, don’t tell anyone, but the Hawks look like absolute horseshit right now. If you don’t beat us by at least 20 points, the Cards have no business winning this division.
