They pretty much have to. Too many times below-average offenses score points or play well against this defense.

But four turnovers by Hass on the road and the TEAM gets blamed?

Who do you blame for that?
Coaches, front office or the last regime?
It would be monumentally stupid to change directions again this quickly.
Not only would you be getting rid of your coach you’d be getting rid of your vice president.
like i said on the other board, I wasn't actually calling for his head
it’s just that the team went on such a downhill stride, and legitimately looks worse that last year’s team. We can say it’s the talent, but he’s responsible for that too, and he sent away a lot of young guys.
Think this will be the first game I turn off early this year.
Fucking depressing that it comes at such a critical part of the season.

Don't ever blame the D when the offense is this fucking bad...
Hasseltoss is losing this game. The D is constantly at a disadvantage with an offense throwing the ball away. the 2 (O and D) go hand and hand, so when your offense sucks most games, your Defense suffers massively.
by BlueThruAndThru on Dec 12, 2010 2:53 PM PST reply actions
Doesn't seem to bug the Steelers.
They just shrug and smack someone in the mouth.
But if your defense sucks then the offense will have to keep throwing the ball
And when Hasselbeck sucks like he does then that is a recipe for disaster

The thing is, you're not just benching Matt for this game
You have to sit him the rest of the season, too. Might explain Carroll’s reluctance (please bench him)
by jhmg16 on Dec 12, 2010 2:57 PM PST via mobile reply actions
nah you can use the excuse....no point getting him injured when the game was over.
They do it to hockey goalies all the time.
Bench Lynch when he fumbles a couple times
4 Hasselceptions and he’s still in
I doubt Leon will be a Seahawk next year.
I can’t imagine he’d want to play for a team that throws away all his return yardage.

Even though it would have been the equivalent of Matt shoving us off the sidewalk into heavy traffic, and then pulling us back at the last second and claiming that he saved us from getting hit by a car! Hero!
Oh I know, but that's how it would be

Smart, conservative play
The linemen were running down to block for a screen. Better to throw it incomplete and punt on 4th & 11 than get flagged for illegal man downfield and be stuck with 3rd & 16. It’s a veteran move.

by coug111 on Dec 12, 2010 2:59 PM PST reply actions 1 recs
It's entirely possible that Whitehurst is absolutely awful.
Not that I don’t support giving him snaps, but it would explain a lot.
from the little that I've seen of CW I'd say he stinks too
but might be worth a look at this point.
That would be pretty sad if he is so awful he can't see snaps when Hass plays this bad
And it would be cause me to really worry about our QB situation next year

By next August, we'll be undefeated
In a year, maybe three at most, Hasselbeck won’t be our quarterback.
In fifteen years, we’ll have a whole new roster.
Within a century, you’ll be dead.
In ~ 500 million years, the sun will evolve to a cycle that makes the Earth uninhabitable.
In ~ 5 billion years, the sun will go red giant and fry the Earth completely.
Within a few trillions of years, the universe will reach an effective heat death, and— regardless of any conceivable advancement in technology or super-powered alien intervention— it will be impossible for any record of the 2010 Seahawks to exist.

can't stand that
I have a buddy that was telling me how great “his Jets” were doing this year. Every year it’s a new team.
Quarterback, Runningback, Fullback
Not Wide Receiver.
We finally get an actual deep ball that works
And he blows the throw.

I wish I could know what goes through Carroll's head after a game like today.
Does he just forget it in his perpetual state of motion and rah rah for next week? Does he brood and attempt to learn from a thorough drubbing by a sub-mediocre team?
He's been through this
We’ve lost six games. By scores of:
31-14
20-3
33-3
41-7
34-19
42-24
Not that that answers your question, but I have to expect that he’s emotionally prepared. Or numb.

He's got a lot of weapons out, to be fair.
He did look quite different with BMW in the fold.
A great receiver is going to make a quarterback look better
but Williams has played in 11 games. Hasselbeck looked poor in almost every one of them.
I was thinking more numbers-wise.
He’s clearly much more successful when BMW’s in there. He still looks bad doing it .

Think of how bad they would be if they actually quit on Carroll, which, it seems, they haven’t done yet.

Butler held on

And don’t boo the TD decision, 49ers fans, you idiots.
Fuck the Jets & who ever said that.
I’ll hate Vinny Testabitch until the day I die. Along with Johnson & Parcells. Cortez had his ass.
That & instant replay.
The same instant replay they used the day my first son was born when those same three assholes rolled into town with a star on their heads instead of a Jet & stole another game after Keyshawn’s entire fucking arm was clearly out of the back of the endzone on the game winning TD pass thrown by Vinny & called by Bill.
Also the same instant replay they used in XL.
So Yeah I fucking hate all three & the Jets with a passion because thats where it all started at least with those 3 & instant replay.

I don't care. I hope they tank the rest of the season at this point.
We need a real QB.
There is absolutely no point
in winning either of those games. Winning the playoff race puts us in a position to play one postseason game, and lose it badly. Losing improves our draft position. Meh. Let’s win the winnable games, and if we make it we make it. But let’s put our main focus on training a proper team for the future.

Now I’m just defeated and irritated to no end. Butler needed more reps and now he’s out until next season. Fuck Seattle’s luck in general when it comes to sports. Unless it’s chicks playing basketball it’s always fail and disappointment.
Even if Hasselbeck doesn't gift wrap that game, Gus Bradley did not look prepared to call this game.

I dislike Matt very much after this game.
I’m curious to see how his supporters will defend that performance. Awful just awful. Against a GOOD team… I’ll accept it but still be pissed. Against the 9er’s who were missing a lot of key players as well….. Unacceptable.
Anyone watching the Q13 postgame?
Apparently the reason Matt sucks is because BMW and Obumanu weren’t in the game.
Hugh Millen really needs to get off Matt’s wang.

I don't mean to start an argument, but was Matt as bad as he sounded by the radio broadcast?
Or were there mitigating circumstances?
4 INTs can't all be explained away by a bad supporting cast.
FG's second favorite football-illiterate semi-troll.
If by mitigating circumstances
you are referring to Matt’s loss of vision, arm strength, and decision-making abilities, then yes, there were mitigating circumstances.
It was tough to tell, because neither Moon or Raible will call out a bad performance.
It wasn’t “Matt was intercepted” but “the 49ners intercepted…” etc.
Can’t tell from the radio broadcast what it actually looked like.
At least two of his INTs were him looking like he's trying to throw for a call.
His other two were horrible throws.

A little bit, from what I saw.
But Matt did freeze, then ran awkwardly and got caught.

I have been a Matt fan for a long time.
I was a huge Krieg fan as well though so take it as you may. Matt looked like he was preempting the rush, spinning to scramble before it was really there, looking to dump it after one check & his spin on the ball was amongst his worst games ever.
It is what it is.
We need a QB in the Draft next year 1st round or not we need one to be ready to start every week by at the very latest 2012.
Did he say Matt, or Hasselbeck.

of course he is. The Hawks are still in it. They're hands are tied though.
They need to put the team in the best position to win today even if it’s hurting the future.
I think I see PC's end game here.
Keep starting Matt, broken hand and all, terrible play and all, because he can do so without taking too much crap, plus it guarantees a top ten draft pick and a shot at one of the premier QBs in next years draft.
At this point, I don’t see any other explanation.
He's in a tight spot.
Matt, even after today, will have a lot of supporters (as Hugh Millen shows). If Carroll benches him for Whitehurst and the Seahawks miss the playoffs, he’ll be hated by a ton of fans. If Carroll keeps him as a starter and the Seahawks miss the playoffs, he’ll be hated by a ton of fans.

Interesting analysis by Millen
Summary: really bad routes by the receivers, and Hasselbeck has to see that and adjust.
Basically, everyone sucked.
Of course Millen found a way to blame someone other than Hasselbeck.
And surprise, he’s still talking out his ass about receiver routes.
Not really
He blamed everyone, including Hasselbeck for throwing the passes.
How is he talking out his ass about receiver routes? He sure seemed very clear in why they were bad, and in the case of Butler & the pick play he sounds correct. Not sure about the seam route to the TE, but it seemed reasonable.

I think Mack had a good point about that, though...
in that we’re running an all-substitute receiving corps, and we can’t just assume it’ll be the same as having Mike and Ben in there. If you’re throwing to Ruvell Martin, you’ve got to adjust the play calling accordingly. (i.e. call simpler plays that don’t require a veteran)
As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly.
