Hey, I just wrote my boss, so I thought I would throw this out there

After this season, after the last three seasons, but especially after this season, I realize that someone that wants to concentrate on X’s and O’s and talent evaluation isn’t a perfect fit for a team-specific blog. As such, I am seriously considering starting a general football blog that takes the kind of approach I do with the Seahawks but that covers the entire NFL. It wouldn’t be comprehensive, necessarily, but it would be the same style and in the same voice.

My goal is to get it off the ground before the 2011 season with maybe a sneak preview prior to the Super Bowl.

What does everyone think about that?

If anyone would be interested in doing more at Field Gulls, that’s also something I am curious about.

by John Morgan on Dec 13, 2010 7:50 PM PST reply actions

sounds good to me

you could be like the Ron Jaworski of SB Nation

by MFAN on Dec 13, 2010 7:59 PM PST up reply actions

mmm... not sure

haven’t seen it in a long while. Same with NFL films presents…

by farmer cam on Dec 13, 2010 7:59 PM PST up reply actions

Oh please no

….To be a cornerback in the National Football League, you need to defend the bump-and-run. Look at Corey Webster of the New York Football Giants, he jams Wayne at the line of scrimmage before the football is thrown, and then stays with him and bats the FOOTBALL away. A great FOOTBALL play by a great FOOTBALL player in the NATIONAL. FOOTBALL. LEAGUE.

Accustomed to mediocrity.

by SSreporters on Dec 13, 2010 7:59 PM PST up reply actions

Sounds awesome.

I’d be interested to see what kind of format you’d use to do that.

by Nate Dogg on Dec 13, 2010 7:56 PM PST up reply actions

I would probably do some of the same play by play stuff, but with more X's and O's thrown in and then maybe some leaguewide feature stuff and--well I'm not starved for ideas.

Honestly, I think it could be reinvigorating, because it’s not a lack of love for the Seahawks, but figuring out new ways to say “this player sucks” and “this player sucks” is enervating.

by John Morgan on Dec 13, 2010 8:00 PM PST up reply actions

It would be more feature-like and less comprehensive

So like what I did with John Carlson, but on a player that people outside the PNW care about.

by John Morgan on Dec 13, 2010 8:01 PM PST up reply actions

I think it would be awesome.

I’m always interested in your opinions of players not on the Seahawks, who you like, who’s over and underrated.

by MFAN on Dec 13, 2010 8:03 PM PST up reply actions

Early on, we would probably concentrate on good players.

It’s so much more fun to write about good players, but of course, once the playoffs are upon us, everyone is fair game.

by John Morgan on Dec 13, 2010 8:06 PM PST up reply actions

I think it would be interesting

If you approached it like a scout by breaking down individual plays and trying to look for match-up problems. The minutiae of detail in an entire series might be a bit much for many (I have to admit I include myself in this group).

by farmer cam on Dec 13, 2010 8:04 PM PST up reply actions

I think you would benefit from finding another author to help fill out content.

That way you could spend time watching games and writing a couple features a week instead of trying to post something daily. You wouldn’t have to feel rushed for content and could offer some really in depth posts.

by Nate Dogg on Dec 13, 2010 8:05 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, definitely.

And my stepping back from supplying nearly all the content at Field Gulls could do the same thing.

by John Morgan on Dec 13, 2010 8:07 PM PST up reply actions

Would you also do draft stuff?

I know you hate the off season but I enjoy the draft and your stuff is generally some of my favorite.

by Nate Dogg on Dec 13, 2010 8:11 PM PST up reply actions

Probably not.

SB Nation has Mocking the Draft. I think we would use the off-season to do more X’s and O’s stuff, and football explained stuff, but you never know.

by John Morgan on Dec 13, 2010 8:14 PM PST up reply actions

Awww.

Well it still sounds awesome. And getting a better perspective of players around the league could only help your analysis.

by Nate Dogg on Dec 13, 2010 8:16 PM PST up reply actions

Very true

Seems to me it could put a lot of the Seahawks stuff in better perspective as well

by Benne on Dec 13, 2010 8:51 PM PST reply actions

I wonder if he is ruined after what happened to him this year

A lot of QBs never recover from this kind of rookie season

by stufr on Dec 13, 2010 8:56 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, he's in a tough spot.

Offense that doesn’t really fit his skill set, lame duck coach. I think Carroll would of been perfect for him :(

by MFAN on Dec 13, 2010 8:58 PM PST up reply actions

Possible.

Definitely think he went to the wrong offense.

Seems like he sucks every game until the final drive, when the Panthers have to pass.

by John Morgan on Dec 13, 2010 8:58 PM PST up reply actions

Its alot like Mirer's rookie year

Stats weren’t that bad for a rookie, but he got beat to shit and jsut became shell shocked.

by stufr on Dec 13, 2010 9:02 PM PST up reply actions

I'd say it's the opposite of Mirer.

Clausen’s stats are really awful but he doesn’t look broken or out of his element.

by Nate Dogg on Dec 13, 2010 9:03 PM PST up reply actions

He is taking about 3 sacks a game and a lot more hits

Rick Mirer held up too that first season, but the 47 sacks during a full season took there toll. Not a distinct toll, but you could tell if had effected his instincts by year 2.

by stufr on Dec 13, 2010 9:06 PM PST up reply actions

I think a good offensive coordiantor could straighten him out

It’s also possible that Clausen was never meant to be good. I liked him more than Bradford, Tebow and McCoy, but it wasn’t a great class. Among all first round picks, something like half of all quarterback prospects bust. A good team just has to be brave and keep trying.

by John Morgan on Dec 13, 2010 9:10 PM PST up reply actions

Carolina is kinda built to break a young QB

So are we right now. Probably why I like next years prospects. They have the buld to withstand it.

by stufr on Dec 13, 2010 9:11 PM PST up reply actions

I don't think Seattle is built to break a young QB.

The skill position players here are pretty good and they could grow together, and the passing blocking is below average but not horrendous.

by Nate Dogg on Dec 13, 2010 9:14 PM PST up reply actions

Thats where I think Matt and CW are an advantage for us

Carolina has better WRs and RBs than us. Maybe not better, but at least as good, overall. There line talent isn’t that much worse, but I think we have schemed better. Matt and CW may not have been great this year but they have gotten rid of the ball and avoided the sack better than the QBs at Carolina. I think it has more to do with QB play and scheme than anything else.

by stufr on Dec 13, 2010 9:18 PM PST up reply actions

It was more of a general thought

Not meant to start a stat driven discussion.
I don’t think we have greatly better talent on the O than the Panthers. Our QB play and scheme has helped us to get better outcomes.

by stufr on Dec 13, 2010 9:23 PM PST up reply actions

I'm still a bit ticked we didn't get him when axed from KC.

Didn’t even try to pick him up, content with Grant and BRuss…

He’d be great with ET.

Reed's kind of on his last legs

Not that he’s not still good, but I don’t know that Reed’s ability is on par with what people expect when they invoke the name “Ed Reed.”

by John Morgan on Dec 13, 2010 9:06 PM PST up reply actions

I am thinking we draft an end

and then cut him partway through his rookie season.

by John Morgan on Dec 13, 2010 9:05 PM PST up reply actions

What am I talking about

If there was any “we” in the Seahawks, they probably wouldn’t haunt my existence.

by John Morgan on Dec 13, 2010 9:05 PM PST up reply actions

Also the whole part where you have to pay players to play football for you.

They’ll bring in a veteran anyway and pay him more than they would have had to pay Josh.

by abender20 on Dec 13, 2010 9:10 PM PST up reply actions

good points all around

so basically we got screwed? did Josh Wilson just not fit the mold of what PC was looking for in a corner and Jennings was worth nothing?

by farmer cam on Dec 13, 2010 9:11 PM PST up reply actions

We can't really say, can we? Who knows what the team thought about the various talents?

It’s not particularly compelling if they picked Jennings over Wilson on talent or whatever.

by abender20 on Dec 13, 2010 9:14 PM PST up reply actions

no but we can speculate I guess

I think it was a short sighted attempt to wring value out of an apparent strength. They would have preferred to part with Jennings but found nobody wanted him.

by farmer cam on Dec 13, 2010 9:17 PM PST up reply actions

I think Seattle is working out the old talent and bringing in new talent

which might work eventually. It sort of sucks that it would be so narrow, but, well, this is the kind of dilemma that makes me want to cover the entire NFL.

by John Morgan on Dec 13, 2010 9:18 PM PST up reply actions

I can speculate too.

During the early part of training camp, Carroll came into the cafeteria for breakfast and walked over to the cereal dispenser looking for his standard bowl of only Lucky Charms marshmallows which he has Craig Terrill pick out for him by hand. Wilson, being a Wheaties eater and a habitual early riser, finished the last of the milk right before Pete got there. Wilson was on an airplane 24 hours later.

by abender20 on Dec 13, 2010 9:20 PM PST up reply actions

Great game, though.

Must turn from the All-Favre-All-The-Time-Channel.
