Matt Hasselbeck Suffers "Freak" Hip Injury
Matt will not practice at all this week and will be a game-time decision next Sunday.
In the interim, Charlie Whitehurst will be taking all first-team snaps and will prepare to start against the Rams.

Let's give him a real oppurtunity here before we slay him, folks.
He will be taking 1st team snaps all week in practice this time. I don’t believe it will make him any better, but next week is a huge game in which he will have no excuse.
Today was about as real an opportunity as it gets.
Tampa Bay’s defense was battered and with Obo and Williams healthy there’s no excuse for how badly he performed today. He straight up blew the opportunity he had today to make a splash.
No.
Having a game plan created for your skills not another person’s, and having a week to work through practice— that will be “as real an opportunity as it gets.”
He got that ONCE this year, against the Giants.
Did he lay an egg today? Absolutely. But it wasn’t “as real an opportunity as it gets.”
A real opportunity would be against a team equal to or worse than your team. Perhaps even at home instead of on the road, and of course, with a game plan that you practiced an executed during the week instead of simply taking notes from the sidelines.

We're 6-9 of course we're going to be serious.
6-10 or 7-9 at the start of the year would have been great but now that we’ve been through it I just feel drained. Damn that 4-2 start…
Eat shit bum!
That's actually a good point...
…although mitigated, I think, by the fact that this is a 4-12 talent team playing in a crap division. Dammit.

I coulda sworn I saw that the Lions beat the Buc's in their house.
If they could do it then the Hawks should have been able to do it too. Whitehurst sucked ass today much in the same way he sucked ass against the Giants. Yes it was a real opportunity. Tampa Bay came off of a loss to a really bad team. The team as a whole was the healthiest it has been in quite some time going into the game. Pretty sure as badly Matt has played the past couple of weeks that Whitehurst saw plenty of snaps during practice. Keep making excuses for the guy. There’s a reason he never played in San Diego. He sucks.
while I'm not arguing that he sucks (so far)
the reason he never played in San Diego was because of some dude named Philip Rivers.

Do you think Hasselbeck could have beaten out Billy Volek for the no.2, the way he's playing right now?

I'm confused why this matters.
Nobody said “Matt now” was better than Billy Volek.
If I'm going to root for an all-tools QB starting for my Seahawks it better be Jake Locker.

Has no one on this blog actually watched Billy Volek play?
Billy Volek is the best backup in the league.

I'd rather be making excuses for Charlie than make an entire post of logical fallacies.
“Lions beat the Bucs” – Implying we’re better than or at least on par with the Lions, and that the Bucs are a team that could lose to both the Lions and the Seahawks. This kind of retarded logic never ceases to make me groan. Good teams get beat by bad teams. It happens. It has nothing to do with anything else other than on a particular day, a good team lost to a bad team. Yes, they could have lost. They didn’t.
“Tampa Bay came off of a loss to a really bad team.” – Irrelevant. Even if it were, the counter argument is that because they came off a loss to a really bad team, and they had to win these games to make the postseason, that maybe they were going to play harder. But I wouldn’t make that argument, because I wouldn’t make yours either.
“The team as a whole was the healthiest it has been in quite some time going into the game.” – What the hell does this have to do with Charlie Whitehurst…
“Pretty sure as badly Matt has played the past couple of weeks that Whitehurst saw plenty of snaps during practice.” – Argument from ignorance. You don’t know so don’t assume. Pete Carrol mentioned publicly that Matt would get snaps with the first team offense this week and named him the starter. How many snaps in practice is necessary for someone to have “plenty”?
“There’s a reason he never played in San Diego. He sucks.” – Phillip Rivers?

Yeah, sometimes teams lose to a team better than they are. But we got stomped. There’s zero doubt in my mind that as of today, the Bucs are a better team than the Seahawks. Now, the Lions beat the Bucs. Maybe the Lions are worse than the Bucs, and beat them anyways, or maybe the Lions are better. Either way, the Lions are at the very least within the margin of error of equaling the Bucs. We were not within the margin of error of the Bucs. The Lions were one of the worst teams in the league very recently, now they are most likely better than we are. That’s something to be disappointed about, and to drive impetus for change and improvement. Change.
The Lions have clearly been better than us this season.
Heck, if they had had Matt Stafford the whole season, they could have won the NFC West.
The Lions have all the parts to win.
And they have been competitive in their games. They are not getting blown out, and have a much tougher schedule than us.
Their problem has been Stafford and Hill both getting hurt, and both their #1 and #2 QBs are better than our #1.
Don't forget we're so bad at qb some are thinking we'd like their number three as a potential guy to bring in here...

It's a valid arguement, but he's almost 29.
The coaches can’t hold his hand anymore. He needs to make something happen.
I don't disagree with this. (Though I do with the comments above, which Typical Idiot and UW Alex answered succinctly.)
I don’t want him to have his hand held, but it would be nice to be given a legit chance, as opposed to the seeming chance he’s gotten thus far. He now has one start. ONE. One game in which the game plan was implemented with him in mind. Apparently he’ll get one more, in week 17.
Even in his crappy first year here, Hasselbeck got three before a benching for terribleness.
If he does look great against the Rams, does that solve anything? Or is is too late, the die has been rolled, judgement has been cast? I don’t know… I only know to date, I wonder if he has been given a real opportunity to “make something happen.”

I don't think we should judge him until week 3 or 4 next year
And yes I think he will start at least that much, since I think we will draft a QB and sit him for a couple of weeks.
It's too bad...
it’s week 3 or 4 next year, instead of weeks 8-16 this year…

The long view would agree
The short view, and on this issue the one I think front office has, is that we had a wierd window in which to go to the playoffs this year so lets do it. Does it hurt the long view? Maybe, but only if you think that they haven’t already decided who is the QB next year.
I can't explain it.
I still laugh every time you write this. I think because a small part of me thinks it’s a decent idea at this point. :)

I thought Matt was just helping us win draft position...
First-team reps could help us see more positive plays from CW if he in fact starts.
Hasseldone.
Charlie best play good next week
Because they just announced over at SI that the Hawks game is going prime time next week. The eyes of the world are upon us!
The League decides who plays Sunday night in week 17.
NBC is contractually obligated to take it in the shorts. The upside is: no Billick.
The simple throws escape whitehurst. He had all the reps prior to the Giants game
in both instances he looked awful reps or no reps, the guy can’t even make simple throws that don’t require anything of advanced QBing skills, they just require you to HIT THE OPEN FUCKING GUY. How the fuck do you give up a 3rd rounder for this guy?
by Joshua Kasparek on Dec 26, 2010 11:36 PM PST reply actions
Maybe he just got rattled.
Or maybe he just sucks. What’s there to be gained by not giving him this final start? It’s not like Hasselback doesn’t also suck.
by Johnny Slick on Dec 26, 2010 11:37 PM PST up reply actions
Oh, no you misunderstand. I may hate him because he's worthless, but him starting isn't really a problem for me.
I think this signals that the coaches were probably right. I’m kinda glad now that they stayed with hasselbeck. A late fade under carroll with hasselbeck is much better than the likely 0-16 that would have come from this guy and essentially sent everyone into a spiral of cliff jumping.
by Joshua Kasparek on Dec 26, 2010 11:42 PM PST up reply actions
In all probability the team would have benched him after 3 or 4 games if he was that bad.
Unlike Hasselbeck, Clipboard Jesus doesn’t have an established record of past success that makes it so tempting to leave him in the game when he’s playing poorly.
by Johnny Slick on Dec 26, 2010 11:46 PM PST up reply actions
You're probably right, but if we went with My plan of just dropping Matt altogether you'd be stuck.
Because I’m a genius who thinks up “Ideal situations” that make me look so stupid in hindsight it’s incredible.

If Whitehurst does suck though, how much does it really cost the team?
Yeah, losing the 3rd round pick sucks but that was gone the moment he signed. Having him stick around an extra year isn’t going to magically make that pick re-appear. In the meantime, I hope that he’ll get this week to make a final push for being on the 2011 team. If not, oh well. Doesn’t particularly bother me either way.
The only thing good about the Whitehurst trade so far is that we didn't spend a 1st or 2nd round pick to get him
by Pessimistic Optimist on Dec 27, 2010 1:06 AM PST reply actions
Also
Swapping our 40th for SD’s 60th, along with our 3rd rounder, is probably equal to a late first rounder or 2nd round pick. I know. My original comment was more of a joke.
by Pessimistic Optimist on Dec 27, 2010 1:10 AM PST up reply actions
The combined value of that trade is a mid 2nd (~10-14 in the 2nd).
No matter what chart you use.
Assuming we lose this week, of course. If we win, it’s a later 2nd (~20-24 in the 2nd).
So, we essentially DID give up a second for Whitehurst.
This whole situation is a conspiracy theorist's dream.
Llama's cut/release list:
Gus Bradley,Terrill, Trufant, Jennings, Locklear, Hasselbeck, Andrews, and so many more.
Matt Hasselbeck scored 6 points on his "injury" TD run.
6 also happens to be the number of wins the Seahawks have. Russel Okung, who blocked for Hasselbeck on his “injury” play was taken with the 6th overall pick, and Whitehurst, who took over for Hasselbeck after he “got hurt”, wears the number 6.
And the league has mysteriously flexed the game against the Rams into primetime, meaning that the game will progress into the 6:00 hour at the same relative time in the game Matt Hasselbeck “got injured”.
COINCIDENCE??

Having a good quarterback wont fix our team.
Our defense hasn’t held the other team under 30 points since week 7.
Eat shit bum!
There really needs to be a delete option
Week 13 and 10 we won and held them under 20 points. All our wins we held them to 20 points or less.
Eat shit bum!
slightly reminiscent of
the Mora affair eh? In anycase I don’t think the two are comparable, especially with regards to the FO and the state of the organization. I just wish Carroll wouldn’t talk all that jazz about winning forever and just rebuild…

The assumption here however is...
that having the offense better, thus sustaining longer drives and scoring more points, wouldn’t have a positive effect on the defense. Keep in mind that when the defense is on the field with the lead we seem to magically put it all together and dominate (ok, dominate is too strong a word).
It wouldn’t shock me if putting together a real offense suddenly made the defense look a whole lot better.
Plus it means in games our defense sucks, our offense can keep up.
As opposed to getting blownout.
by Hopefulmsfan on Dec 27, 2010 1:03 PM PST up reply actions
Having a good offense on the field does a few things,
It keeps the other team’s offense off the field, preventing them from scoring points. It also keeps our defense fresh, and ultimately, if it comes down to it, means that we get more competitive games.
