Ask Niners Nation
Hey everybody, this is Fooch from Niners Nation. I'd have to imagine Seahawks fans have to be enjoying the struggles of the 49ers. Even bigger is the fact that your Seahawks can eliminate the 49ers from the postseason with a win at Candlestick Park on Sunday. Of course, the NFC West has been so convoluted and confusing that there is no result this weekend that would surprise me.
The 49ers season has been fairly disastrous from day one and some folks would just prefer that another team would just pull the plug and finish this torturous season. While I'd love to still make the playoffs, I can also see some value in just getting this all over with and moving forward into 2011.
You'll get an interesting mix of the 49ers this week. The team has benched Troy Smith and gone back to everyone's favorite whipping boy, Alex Smith. Additionally with Frank Gore finished for the season with a hip injury, Brian Westbrook and Anthony Dixon will continue splitting running back duties. And the defense? Well when Donald Driver breaks seven tackles for a long TD catch and run, things just aren't going your way.
Feel free to ask questions, make comments, or just laugh in our general direction. Normally, I'd say just stick to questions about the 49ers, but at this point I honestly don't care. 49ers fans have done enough laughing at their own expense that laughs from opposing fans really doesn't make much difference. I'm a fairly beaten-down fan at this point. I'll get some of the other NN folks over here to join in the discussion.

Who does the fanbase like better, Troy Smith or Alex Smith?
by Pessimistic Optimist on Dec 7, 2010 2:16 PM PST reply actions
mixed bag
It’s some combination of liking/disliking Alex Smith, liking/disliking Troy Smith, and just wanting to move past both. At this point Alex Smith would seem to be trailing in public opinion, but it’s hard to tell. I’d imagine we’ll see a soccer-style riot the second he starts to struggle.

I tend to think that the older fans who have followed this team through its high performing championship caliber seasons think that Alex is nowhere near the same league as those who have come before him or even with half the active QBs in this league. However, there has been so much dysfunction in the coaching staff and game preparation and management that there are also fans who are patient enough and willing to see how Alex would do with a good coach and a “spread offense.” Everyone pretty much agrees that Alex is a nice guy though.
Get Well Frank!
Please use the subject line here

In what room and with what instrument
would your fanbase use to kill Mike Singletary in a game of Clue?

Lead pipe seems like it's be more enjoyable.
Rounded grip would be easier to hold, hollowness would make it a bit lighter.
rookie linemen
They’ve had a ton of ups and downs. Anthony Davis has put together two straight very solid games, including helping hold Clay Matthews to no sacks on Sunday. They both are suffering growing pains, but I’ve seen enough over the course of the year that I’m excited for the future. They could still certainly end up as busts, but I think they’ve shown enough that my excitement is at least a little bit justified.
For Davis in particular, the criticism has been heavy in part because he’s out on an island at right tackle and it’s easier to see his mistakes as compared to Iupati. He was considered extremely raw coming out of college and it’s shown at times. But performances like the Packers game make it easy to get excited.

both of them...
have been all over the place at times. They’ve owned opponents and they’ve been owned.

They both have massively improved
But both are still inconsistent. If the right line comes to the game Alex will have days in the pocket.
Kellen Moore is awesome
Who else on your team sucks besides Alex Smith?
I suffer from IBS, otherwise known as "Influx of Billick Syndrome".
The more apropriate question would be
Who doesn’t suck? The answer would be Justin Smith, Patrick Willis, Vernon Davis and a healthy Frank Gore. Followed by group of average talent and underachieving talent being held back by very poor coaching. Just my opinion FWIW
49ers and TOOL live, my personal Heaven!!!
I hope this answers your question
Which is why we get beat through the air. Basically those two positions are horrible and hurt the entire team. The front 7 is really good mostly because of Justin Smith, Spikes, and Willis. Franklin I heard was going to be out which is good for the Niners because I believe that RJF is a lot better than Franklin.
In the secondary both of our corners suck and Goldson is playing horribly. Smith a 7th round draft pick has been playing pretty decent. He has some issues but I see him as a starter. Mays is now on the bench which sucks because I really liked that guy.
Now onto the offense
Basically everyone is suited for their position other than Chilo. If you want to sack Alex just rush at Chilo and you should get a clean shot. The rest of the line has been inconsistent since two of our 5 starters are out and 2 of them are rookies. Davis and Iupati have been playing really well recently and Davis just went 1 on 1 against Mathews and won. (0 sacks) I am really really excited about this line in the future and the rest of the offense should be crazy good provided they have a QB that can throw them the ball.
People want to replace Morgan but I don’t see why as he is playing decently for a #2 WR. Crabtree has been playing better and has been making crazy catches every game. VD and Walker are still beasts. Westbrook and Dixon are ok but the offense is just to predictable for them to get decent runs. If I could change anything about the offense except for the QB it would be to let Williams into the game as a speedy guy since that is a big thing that we are missing.
Kellen Moore is awesome
RJF better?

Ya I like him better
and he showed a lot of potential when he went against the #1s during preseason.

BTW guys we should rec this so it gets promoted
Just need 3 more people.

QB prospects
ew. In the draft and on the team I don’t want any of them. I would like Moore but he is coming out in 2012.
Kellen Moore is awesome
Started stronger
than expected. Crashed back down to earth after being burned several times deep.

That said
I like him a lot and think he has a bright future with the niners. I don’t know if other fans feel the way I do.

Agree about the bright future
but he had no business thinking Carroll was going to prefer him to Earl Thomas.
by DeathValleyCarl on Dec 8, 2010 11:33 AM PST up reply actions
i believe the problem he had with carroll
Was that carroll told him that he didn’t need to work on anything to get drafted early
by Andrew9erfan on Dec 9, 2010 10:16 AM PST up reply actions
Probably should have critisized him more
Told him he was the 5 best safety in the draft. That would have made things better . . .
well, when he asks what he needs to work on
yeah, it sounds like he was looking for criticism so he could improve
Taylor Mays is a college graduate and can think for himself.
Can’t believe he thought getting drafted was the end of the rainbow and not knowing he would be more attractive with coverage experience. I’m sure what Carroll told him was to install confidence – he might have misinterpreted that to a degree but he also had alum Ronnie Lott in his ear. I’m sure Mays knew he needed the full package to make it in the NFL as a safety. Earl Thomas was obviously a surer thing.
by DeathValleyCarl on Dec 10, 2010 6:26 AM PST up reply actions
Benched now
I’m dissapointed. He needs some work on his coverage and I can see him get better with a little bit more training. He did a lot better than expected but since the rest of the secondary sucked so much he had to do more than I would have hoped for. But he is now on the bench and Smith is starting. Thankfully Goldson will be gone next year and the two starting safeties should be Mays and Smith.
Kellen Moore is awesome
Seahawks are wasting their time chasing this thing called the playoffs
It’s all about that stocking up on draft picks.

Can't argue with that
It’s how the Niners ended up with a talent-rich team.

How much has the SF Giants Championship helped stem off the disappointment in the Niners?
When the Hawks totally fell off the map unexpectedly in ’08 the Mariners were just finishing off a 101 loss season… and the Sonics were bailing to Oklahoma… and the Huskies went 0-12…
God damn it. Fuck 2008 so hard.
Earl Thomas = God-send

Hasn't helped the disappointment
since I hate the Giants with a passion.

playoffs
I want to go to the playoffs. If you guys eliminate us, I’ll take 4-12. Maybe it’s not best for the long term, but playoffs are playoffs and it’s been a long drought.

I don't want to see the 49ers become another Detroit
I don’t believe in losing for better draft position. Detroit and other cellar dwellers get top picks year after year and have trouble winning. Winning is ingrained in the culture. Play to win every game, playoffs or no playoffs.
The team has underachieved from a lack of good strategy and execution.
Just adding better talent will yield the same result unless they learn how to win.

What did you folks think of Jason Hill?
I was rooting for him to succeed (WSU alum, hometown connection) and he had a pretty decent year in 2008 (TD vs. the Hawks in week 8) and then… just fell off the face of the Earth. Is he a pro talent, or was that a squandered draft pick?
His biggest contribution was as a gunner on ST. He always seemed to make a play everytime he got an opportunity on offense. Apparently that’s not enough for Singletary. It was weird to see him not make the active roster after preseason. I’m glad Jacksonville is finding some use for him as are many teams with our discarded players. Sigh.
Get Well Frank!
make sure....
and use the subject line.

Just how warm is Singletary's seat at this point?
FG's second favorite football-illiterate semi-troll.
Toasty...with little chance of cooling down
Many think that he’d be gone already if there was a viable replacement on the staff. My guess is that he’s gone the day after the final game, and that the front office is doing their research on potential candidates.
Jed York is maintaining good business strategy by waiting until the end of the season to decide on coaching changes.
There is no quick fix available because head coach is not the only reason we’re losing. I believe Singletary when he says that losing his job doesn’t enter into his thought process. After a season and a half of results, it will be obvious if his skillset and management style are suitable for the position.
by DeathValleyCarl on Dec 8, 2010 7:16 AM PST up reply actions
I'm not sure about how his role would be.
He had 3 looks and caught 2 of them last week. With Gore out, Alex will need extra help with protection so Delanie and Vernon will be blocking more than usual. However don’t be surprised if Delanie gets some serious action in his direction. I love his YAC and he always makes the most out of it when his number is called.
In my opinion, Delanie has some of the best hands on this team and has been consistent through each season.
Get Well Frank!
Sorry
Should have answered about the injury. No updates on that so far. The fact that he came back to play in the game after he injured his ankle is a good sign. The 2 catches were after the injury.
Get Well Frank!
Thanks!
Yeah, I didn’t even mean as a pass catcher necessarily, though I’ve always had a grudging respect for him coming out of the backfield. Not the greatest acceleration in the world, but a big dude, and pretty good top end speed for someone his size.
Walker coming back in.
Frank Gore came back in the game in Arizona.
Joe Staley came back into the Ram game.

Off topic
Is it possible to let the whole “use the subject line” thing go when it comes to these ask-another-team posts? These are people who are posting once or twice for our sake, seems rude to then nitpick them on it. At least it comes across like that to me, just my two cents.

I'd be willing.
Not sure how much it means to the mods and such.
This wooden soul of mine, it cannot ever climb from places it has fallen: In between where light can shine. It never falls in line, it barely has a spine, like branches severed from the vine. Like it was faulty by design.
I agree -- not really very hospitable of us
Some of it is in the delivery, but we haven’t had huge need for moderation on the posts anyway, from what I’ve seen.
As a temporary citizen of San Francisco, I've noticed that it's customary at Seattle SN blogs (LL, FG) to use subject lines seriously, and ignore them entirely in SF blogs (NN, McC).
I could say, “Interesting,” but that would be a god damn lie. Anyway, agreed.
I'd rather have

Sadly, I think he may wind up in SF…

A high chance
especially if Peterson or Amukamara are on the board I don’t expect them to pick a QB.

In The Vice Guide to North Korea*
Host Shane Smith refers to NK leader, Kim Jung Il only by his name and is reprimanded by his NK handler, who tells him that Kim Jung Il should always be referred to by his title (Ex: “Supreme Leader Kim Jung Il”).
When you mention Shaun Hill, I imagine a hypothetical Niners fan demanding you refer to him as 7-3 Shaun Hill.

Any particular player other than a QB who your entire fanbase hates? (Your version of Kelly Jennings)
overpaid and declining? yes
hated by the entire fan base? no. I wouldn’t even say smith is hated by the entire fan base. A lot of us don’t hate him, but still want to get someone better.
