Colts at Titans Game Thread

Jason Babin is the eighth most valuable defensive end by expected points added.

Chris Johnson is the 45th most valuable running back by expected points added.

I can't help but wonder how scheme contributes to that. But I am sure opponents sell out to stop Rusty Smith.

Surely 'Thursday Night Football' is a...

left-wing plot to cause marital strife and divorce.

by farmer cam on Dec 9, 2010 5:01 PM PST reply actions

Only because my fiancee won't watch it

And has the remote. Okay so it’s not marital strife, but still.

Haha, well finals are next week

So I guess I should be studying… Everybody needs breaks though, right?

So, John, you've seen UW Husky games.

Would Mason Foster be a good player in the NFL?

by Coach Owens on Dec 9, 2010 5:32 PM PST reply actions

He's kind of thin and not terribly quick

which isn’t a great combination, but he’s coordinated and hard working. I think he should have some kind of NFL career.

by John Morgan on Dec 9, 2010 5:54 PM PST up reply actions

Opinions on player EPA?

I’m of the mind that it might be interesting in tracking production but it’s more or less useless in evaluating a player’s talent or ability going forward.

by Nate Dogg on Dec 9, 2010 5:33 PM PST reply actions

I am of the opinion...

that there are far too many variables in football to get much meaningful statistical data.

by farmer cam on Dec 9, 2010 5:37 PM PST up reply actions

Player-wise, yes. I think the team stats are pretty good and much better than just looking at yards or points.

But theres a difference between a stats ability to track production and it’s ability to project production. Almost all player stats suck at the later but I think EPA might be ok at the former.

by Nate Dogg on Dec 9, 2010 5:41 PM PST up reply actions

Even quantifying production at an individual level is iffy.

Look at Chris Johnson. Unless we can set up some parallel universe were a replacement level running back runs the same scheme against the same defenses it’s really difficult to know how responsible he is for his lack of production.

by farmer cam on Dec 9, 2010 5:54 PM PST up reply actions

Chris Johnson, don't let me down buddy.

I started your ass over my better judgment.

Cake for me too, please.

Wasn't Tennessee starting a rookie for a bit?

This wooden soul of mine, it cannot ever climb from places it has fallen: In between where light can shine. It never falls in line, it barely has a spine, like branches severed from the vine. Like it was faulty by design.

Jeez,

tight end (or tackle?) just dominated on the left side.

How is Roos looking?

Never had a chance to follow that up.

by John Morgan on Dec 9, 2010 6:01 PM PST reply actions

Sort of the game I expected

Wonder if Indy will go for points in the final 49.

by John Morgan on Dec 9, 2010 6:55 PM PST reply actions

I kind of wanted to go against Troy Smith.

So glad Gore is out, though. Westbrook is a dinosaur.

Cake for me too, please.

by shams on Dec 9, 2010 7:05 PM PST up reply actions

I'm nervous, too.

Thankfully, we still can benefit from the ‘Alex Smith factor’. Of course Gore being OUT helps, but I think Dixon is capable and so is Westbrook when not too banged up (almost never).

...

by Misfit74 on Dec 9, 2010 7:07 PM PST up reply actions

I got a bad feeling Alex will play well

And I’ll give up on Jennings for good.

If Bradley and Carroll were wise they’d bench Jennings.

I'm starting Garcon.

The Titans suck so bad.

Somehow I could see that.

Throw money at him Paul! He might eke out a couple playoffs appearances.

by John Morgan on Dec 9, 2010 7:42 PM PST up reply actions

So, just to throw a hand grenade into a quiet room

Does anyone else get the sinking suspicion that Seattle will re-sign Hasselbeck?

by John Morgan on Dec 9, 2010 7:43 PM PST reply actions

Yes.

Then Cam Newton will run rings around him.

by SSreporters on Dec 9, 2010 7:44 PM PST up reply actions

What I fear is a 2006 Shaun like resurgence

That drags him one year longer than he should.

I’m still pulling for “I retire from football”.

Accustomed to mediocrity.

by SSreporters on Dec 9, 2010 7:45 PM PST up reply actions

It hasn't cost him any playing time, Seattle is in the midst of a playoff run

and with no one really available through free agency, I wonder how else the Seahawks are going to fill the position.

by John Morgan on Dec 9, 2010 7:48 PM PST up reply actions

That would scare me

I just hope that management knows they absolutely need to draft a QB next year. I guess it’s possible they make a play for Kolb but unless we clone Okung he’ll just get swallowed up.

Accustomed to mediocrity.

by SSreporters on Dec 9, 2010 7:48 PM PST up reply actions

As a fan, you just roll with it because, well, such is life of an NFL fan

but as someone that has to write about the team every day, I think I’d vomit. I am already getting to the point where, from a tape analysis and writing standpoint, I feel like I am stuck writing about a lot of bad players getting dominated. It’s boring and predictable.

by John Morgan on Dec 9, 2010 7:53 PM PST up reply actions

I said that the other night.

And if they do, say goodbye to a high draft pick at QB. With Hass and Charlie on the roster, where are they gonna fit a Locker/Mallet/Luck/etc.?

by djafrot on Dec 9, 2010 7:50 PM PST up reply actions

OT but this is our 2011 schedule

Assuming no 16 game schedule or lockout:

Home

NFC West
Dallas
NY Giants
Cleveland
Pittsburgh
NFC South Opp.

Away

NFC West
Philly
Washington
Baltimore
Cincinnati
NFC North opponent

I’m marking my calendar for Pittsburgh @ Seattle.

Accustomed to mediocrity.

by SSreporters on Dec 9, 2010 7:57 PM PST reply actions

Well that looks like a tough one.

I can see at least five losses without using division games. I wouldn’t be surprised if we lost to Dallas or Cleveland either.

by Coach Owens on Dec 9, 2010 8:02 PM PST up reply actions

I don't like predicting W/L that far in the future

But that is a brutal road schedule we have.

Also Dallas and Cleveland are better than Seattle.

Accustomed to mediocrity.

by SSreporters on Dec 9, 2010 8:04 PM PST up reply actions

Why the hell is Indy's entire defense in the end zone?

That’s almost the same play as the last touchdown.

by SSreporters on Dec 9, 2010 8:00 PM PST reply actions

So either Chris Johnson has declined

or the Titans do not know how to construct an offense independent of Chris Johnson.

by John Morgan on Dec 9, 2010 8:08 PM PST reply actions

That line got blown back

Did anyone hear Bill Polian say drafting Jerry Hughes was a mistake?

Accustomed to mediocrity.

by SSreporters on Dec 9, 2010 8:12 PM PST reply actions

http://larrybrownsports.com/football/bill-polian-colts-should-have-drafted-rodger-saffold-over-jerry-hughes/42555

Asked a question by a caller, Polian, who is the Colts’ president, said the team made a mistake drafting Jerry Hughes over Rodger Saffold. Saffold was selected early in the second round by the St. Louis Rams and has been playing left tackle. Polian says the team erroneously evaluated Saffold as strictly a right tackle while the rookie has proved he can be an effective left tackle.

In contrast, Jerry Hughes was taken 31st overall by the Colts and has just three tackles on the season. The rookie defensive end from TCU has been inactive a good portion of the season, something that normally doesn’t happen with healthy first-round picks. Not only did the Colts overrate Hughes, but they also underrated Saffold.
