Around SBN: NFL Owners Vote to Change Trade Deadline

Will offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates trade for Brandon Marshall?

New Seahawks offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates has went on record with his intentions.  He plans to create an offense similar to the one he learned under former Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan.

Could this mean a trade for a current Bronco's WR?

Brandon Marshall comes with both talent and concerns, but with Houshmandzadeh one year older, and Nate Burleson being an UFA, perhaps Pete Carroll can be convinced to trade one of our two first round picks for the troubled but talented wideout.

Yes something like that.

Dream Draft: Clausen, Brown (#24), Houston, McKnight, Mike Williams, Black, McManis, DTN.

2nd and 4th

Trade back from 6 or 14 to “re-acquire” the picks traded away.

Alternatively, trade #14 for their 2nd and Marshall (I’d need to look at a value chart to see how these options balance out).

by bilbo on Feb 19, 2010 9:49 AM PST up reply actions

No thanks.

Our 2nd round pick is very valuable, and we have too many holes to start throwing away draft picks.

Sure, he's good.

But our team is full of glaring needs, and we need young talent basically everywhere.

Brandon Marshall is young talent and one of the holes on this team is at receiver.

What are you expecting to get with our second round pick thats better than Marshall?

by Nate Dogg on Feb 20, 2010 5:07 PM PST up reply actions

Ok, I'd give up the 2nd for him,

but definitely not either one of our firsts.

and Denver would have to take some of our cap-swillers

like Kerney.

Who cares about cap this year?

Without salary cap there is no need to worry about cap. I know that is a redundant sentence.

Might be because in the future, there may STILL be a cap.

Even as early as 2011.

What you do this year, determines your cap flexibility next year. We don’t want to make the sort of mistakes that the 49ers made.

For the right price, I'd trade for Marshall.

But I would not trade either of our 1st round picks for him.

Need more dirtbags

At least one. Brandon Marshall has some issues. But he’s a freak: dude had a game where he caught like 23 balls. And he’s young. He’s definitely worth a first day pick.

Why are there only 3 options?

I would love him, and maybe for the 6th or 14th, but more likely for some other mixture of shiny things.

by Tyler Jorgensen on Feb 20, 2010 3:09 AM PST reply actions

You may be correct, in that I should have included more options.

However, I was also knew that readers would come up with other options and write them (thebyron) for example.
My thoughts are that Denver will have a few teams (Baltimore, for example) with lower first round picks that will be willing to trade, and that a 2nd round pick for Marshall would not be enough. To be honest, I never concidered the possibility of including Branch. ( not a bad idea )

As for Marshall patching up his relationship with Denver, not only is he on the “trading block” but also a restricted free agent. The franchise fnumber for a WR is estimated to be over 9.5 million.

I think his motivation is to increase his overall value, reguardless of trade value or value to Denver for a contract extention that will likely be in the 5 yr/50 million ballpark.

Looks like it's mutual, both sides reject trade!!

I did the same post on the Bronco’s sportsnation website, and much like here, only 23% approved the trade of Brandon Marshall for ONE of Seattle’s first round picks, but 38% said they would only trade him for a first AND and 3rd round pick, and 37% feel he is too valuable to trade.
(that means out of 202 votes, over 75 % feel his value is equal or above a 1st and a 3rd rd pick)

This contrasts greatly with Seahawk fans, 68% of which would not trade either 1st round pick for him , while only 30% would give up their #14 pick and only one person would give up the #6 pick.

( I didn’t include an option to trade MORE than a first round pick, as I knew Hawk fans would not go for that, even though I did include that option on the Denver site)

Classic prisoner's dilemma situation

As both parties are only concerned with their own best interests and no middle ground would be reached. Bronco fans are going to overvalue Marshall and Seattle fans are going to overvalue Branch and their picks to the point where they’d never make a deal.

Of course, your argument is also a non sequitur in that there is a big disconnect between your assertion and conclusions. Namely, Seattle fans reject the trade because you don’t give them the option of trading lesser picks and/or players, which is where most fans would probably lean based on the comments.

by bilbo on Feb 20, 2010 3:25 PM PST up reply actions

You are correct, I should have given more options, but wasn't sure where to draw-the-line.

But I was correct, in that even if the majority of Seahawk fans had voted for trading our 2nd, our 4th, Branch, or some combination, this would have been rejected quickly by the Broncos (fans) as they feel he is either too good to trade or he is worth a first plus more (hawks dont have a 3rd).

Still think Jeremy Bates wants him bad!

by durst on Feb 20, 2010 4:57 PM PST up reply actions

Realistically, does Branch have any trade value

considering how he’s performed for us in 3 seasons?

by rex92 on Feb 20, 2010 3:58 PM PST reply actions

Not much, I'd think.

And I seem to remember John pointing out that Denver already has a Branch-type WR in Eddie Royal. They don’t need another quick, slick smurf.

by djafrot on Feb 20, 2010 5:27 PM PST up reply actions

I would be more than ok with giving them #14

And our 4th round pick for Marshall
My reasoning:
With any draft pick, there is the potential bust factor. Marshall is 25 and has already proved he is a #1 receiver. That in and of itself is good value for the 14th pick (in my opinion.) As for his risk as a “diva”, I am more comfortable risking the 14th pick on Marshall’s attitude than a potential bust.

If the Seahawks were to obtain Marshall, we would have an exceptionally formidable pair of top 2 receivers.

by killacamkilla2 on Feb 20, 2010 5:38 PM PST reply actions

It would be very tempting to give 14 and a post-3rd round pick for Marshall.

It’s not every day you get to acquire a true #1 WR as young as Marshall. I would be all for it.

Wilson: Williams’ death a reason Brandon Marshall wants out of Denver

Seriously? Well send him to Seattle. It’s a drive-by shooting free zone. ;)

That means he isn't haunted by it?!?

Bird Law in this country isn't governed by reason.

by Tyler Jorgensen on Feb 22, 2010 10:43 AM PST up reply actions

I'm not questioning his grief.

I’m questioning the timing of the story in relation to other reasons he’s widely believed to be available. I don’t trust the spin and timing of the story. I don’t doubt it is something that probably has troubled Marshall for some time, as it would anybody in his shoes. The publicity of it happens to coincide with trade winds and may carry at least a hint of deception.

by Misfit74 on Feb 22, 2010 11:05 AM PST up reply actions

Yes, I can see that now.

There wasn’t news of a pending trial earlier that I had heard about or read. That could lend some validity to the initial story I was cynical of.

by Misfit74 on Feb 23, 2010 4:11 PM PST up reply actions

So is Housh

If I were a GM I would always look for talent on the team. That was the problem with Ruskell. he passed on so many potential FA’s because he emphasized so much on “character.” Don’t get me wrong character is important for a team but talent is what wins you that trophy. And Marshall is just that. Plus he’s had a difficult time after he witnessed his best friend die in front of him and has stated before that he hated Denver and wants out.

by Seahawksfan23 on Feb 24, 2010 2:16 PM PST up reply actions

Branch has no significant trade value.

I can see why the Hawks would like to trade for Marshall … then all they’d need is someone to throw him the ball and about four guys to protect that guy.

Marshall has been arrested something like a half dozen times , offenses ranging from domestic violence to battery to DUI … so he definitely comes with a ton of baggage, and to say that merely getting him out of Denver is going to make him straighten up and fly right is the height of naivete.

by xteve on Feb 21, 2010 6:13 PM PST reply actions

Brandon was tendered 1st round only

Here’s the link.

The Hawks could sign him to an offer sheet and would only have to fork over a first round pick. Worth it? Probably not for the Hawks.

But for any needy team with a low round pick (Ravens), it’s a sure thing.

6/14/40. Sweet.

by Nick Andron on Mar 3, 2010 12:32 PM PST reply actions

The percentages are changing, and its becoming more popular to trade for Marshall.

Rememeber that the Seahawk’s #14 pick was previously Denver’s, from a trade last yr. So even if Seattle trades the #14 pick, in a way they only gave up a 2nd round pick in LAST YEARS draft.
