Diamonds in the Rough

I am curious as to the college players people like, who may be 4-7 round picks. Maybe not necessarily for the D-hawks, but just a player who you have taken a fancy to, and will be curious as to where they get drafted. There are of course a lot of Pac-10 players we like, but what about that unknown LDE from Bowling Green? Or that obscure CB from Weber State? You may not even think they have a chance, but you'll be pulling for them (like I was for Ian Johnson this last off-season).

I don't really want to make this a "We should draft [Player Name]!" thread, or "There is no way that [Player Name] will be drafted in round [1-7]!", or "You're obviously dumb, in addition to that guy sucking, your face does as well."

Just say who you like, and why, and hopefully we can generate some good discussion during these boring down hours of the year.

Who I like:

I like Keaton Kristick, but he is from my school of choice and Pac-10 so I’ll steer away from him.

I’m pretty into James Starks, RB from Buffalo. I like his running style, I like his size, and it should be fun to see if he lands anywhere.

I hate Utah and everything they stand for, but despite my hatred I find myself pulling for Robert Johnson, FS.

by DJ C-Raig on Feb 2, 2010 6:58 PM PST reply actions

I like Kristick as well

he always seemed a little light, but he’s tenacious.

by B Money on Feb 2, 2010 7:03 PM PST up reply actions

Nfldraftscout.com has him at 6-3, 226.

Take that for what it’s worth. He’s pretty lean too.

by DJ C-Raig on Feb 2, 2010 8:33 PM PST up reply actions

Lean would be a better way to describe it...

he’s light for his size. Size is something that can be overcome (Nick Reed was only listed at 6’1" 245), the guy has a knack for the ball and I’ll take hustle over upside in nearly all cases.

Kyle Wilson

CB from Boise State played his way up at Senior Bowl practice. Until last week he was a 3-5th rounder. I love his instincts and he’s really tough when he jams. I’m drawing a blank on anyone else who really stands out.

by B Money on Feb 2, 2010 7:02 PM PST reply actions

Kyle Wilson eh?

He’s pretty short isn’t he? Ahh well, we might as well just make a balls deep Napoleonic Secondary.

by DJ C-Raig on Feb 2, 2010 8:21 PM PST up reply actions

Athleticisim makes up for that alot...

he was measued at the Senior bowl as 5’10" 190lbs with 30" arm length. He’s agressive and has great cover ability, he’s a flat out playmaker. I’m interested to see his vertical if he attends the combine.

by B Money on Feb 3, 2010 1:44 AM PST up reply actions

He's played himself comfortably into the top of the 2nd round at least

He’s a top-3 corner in the draft now based on the Senior Bowl.

inside of a dog it's too dark to read.

D-Hawks?

I’ll be pulling for Myron Rolle. I’m really hoping he ends up as a Hawk so I can buy his jersey.

by Nate Dogg on Feb 2, 2010 7:49 PM PST reply actions

Yeah, really dig Rolle. Would love him as a Hawk.

D-Hawks just came out as I typed. ’Cause of our stellar defense…get it? No?…ok.

by DJ C-Raig on Feb 2, 2010 8:19 PM PST up reply actions

In thinking about it

Myron Rolle might become might favorite current player the second he was drafted as a Seahawk.

by DJ C-Raig on Feb 2, 2010 8:26 PM PST up reply actions

I know that his name has been thrown around here a lot but...

Daniel Teo-Nesheim!
I went to a lot of Husky games this year and when he wasn’t double/triple teamed, he dominated.
Hopefully he slips into the later rounds and we pick him up.

by killacamkilla2 on Feb 2, 2010 10:35 PM PST reply actions

Seconded.

I think that he will be an impact player at least as a rotational guy, maybe even more.

Husky hoops is depressing.

I have a couple for consideration

Myron Rolle tops my list as well. Also Pat Angerer, undersized MLB at Iowa who is a tackling machine. A.J. Jefferson, CB at Fresno State who is really a return specialist. Boo Robinson, DT Wake Forest, reminds me of Bane, and I just love his name.

Freddie Barnes.

Talents that I covet:

Ndamukong Suh, Gerald McCoy, Sam Bradford, Mike Iupati, Golden Tate, Earl Thomas, and Freddie Barnes

by Carl Shinyama on Feb 3, 2010 7:40 AM PST reply actions

Oh, and Geno Atkins.

From what I hear, he did very well against Mike Iupati in the Senior Bowl.

Do you think it would be safe to say that Ciron Black's stock has fallen in the 4-7 category?

Ndamukong Suh, Gerald McCoy, Sam Bradford, Mike Iupati, Golden Tate, Earl Thomas, and Freddie Barnes

by Carl Shinyama on Feb 3, 2010 7:44 AM PST up reply actions

I don't know if it's safe,

but it seemed like he was falling to the late 2nd before his very poor Senior Bowl. Perhaps a good combine can keep him in the 3rd, but I definitely wouldn’t be surprised to see him last until the 5th. Just speculation though.

by LantermanC on Feb 3, 2010 12:03 PM PST up reply actions

That's the feeling that I have.

I wouldn’t mind taking him in the 4th or 5th rounds, much less in the 6th and beyond.

Talents that I covet:

Ndamukong Suh, Gerald McCoy, Sam Bradford, Mike Iupati, Golden Tate, Earl Thomas, and Freddie Barnes

by Carl Shinyama on Feb 5, 2010 7:36 AM PST up reply actions

Atkins and Hardy are two guys who had potential, didn't seem to live up to it,

but both had great Senior Bowls. This draft is deep with D-Lineman. Makes me not want to take a D-line with the 6th pick.

by LantermanC on Feb 3, 2010 12:03 PM PST up reply actions

I share the same sentiment.

However, if Gerald McCoy is available at #6, I wouldn’t be upset at all.

by Carl Shinyama on Feb 5, 2010 7:38 AM PST up reply actions

I like Freddie Barnes too

He just seems like a known player. It’s some injustice that he didn’t get a combine invite.

by DJ C-Raig on Feb 3, 2010 12:23 PM PST up reply actions

He's not an 'unknown', but I love Joe McKnight.

If we get that 3rd rounder by trading back, or if we can nab him in the 4th somehow, that would be great. He’s a bit injury prone, but I really like the Knight Force combo.

by LantermanC on Feb 3, 2010 11:53 AM PST reply actions

It's interesting

I wonder, would Pete Carroll try to avoid McKnight because of his USC recruiting controversy? Or is this just an overblown issue by the media?

by aerozeppelin on Feb 3, 2010 1:52 PM PST up reply actions

I don't see why he'd care about the recruiting violation now, it affects USC not McKnight or Carroll.

As for the USC connection in general, anyone else a little tired of seeing Mays at #6 or #14, or Griffen at #14? I am. Charlie Brown and McKnight I’m fine with.

by LantermanC on Feb 3, 2010 2:37 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, getting Mays or Griffen at with either of our first picks would make me lose completely faith in our management

Griffen reminds me a lot of LoJack (and not just because they both went to USC). He doesn’t have much pass rush moves, and just isn’t explosive.

by aerozeppelin on Feb 3, 2010 4:20 PM PST up reply actions

Walter Thurmond, CB from Oregon.

6 foot CB with 90 tackles his sophomore year, 5 INTs his sophomore and junior years each. Injured his senior year. Seems to be a decent returner.

Syd’Quan Thompson, CB from Cal (though he’s a bit small and slow) but as a junior he had 70 tackles (includes assists), 14 passes defensed, 7.5 TFL and four interceptions. As a senior he cooled off back to 48 tackles, 1 INT, 8 Passes defensed.

Sherrick McManis from Northwestern as well. For Corners I want someone who’s big or someone who can return. I don’t hate small corners, but given the WRs in our division, and the fact that we already have Josh Wilson, we can’t have too many diminutive CBs.

Obviously like any player projected to go in the 6th round, they’re not infallible, but they seem to have high upside to me.

by LantermanC on Feb 3, 2010 12:02 PM PST reply actions

Syd Vicious and Thurmond the Third are players I dig

I’m tired of small CBs, but if we are going to take a one we might as well go all in and make our entire Secondary 5-10 or under.

by DJ C-Raig on Feb 3, 2010 12:25 PM PST up reply actions

In the case of Syd

Walter Thurmond is taller and I think could be moved to FS if he doesn’t pan out as a CB.

by DJ C-Raig on Feb 3, 2010 12:26 PM PST up reply actions

WTIII

He was playing like one of the best ten players in the country before the knee injury, between returning kicks, returning punts and flashing premier coverage and ball skills. I love the guy as a baller but if there’s one word that defines the man it’s ‘slight’. Not the build of a man you want as the last line of defense on long runs or deep completions. Plays run D a lot like Tru – never afraid to mix it up, just not the most effective at it.

by niko on Feb 3, 2010 2:15 PM PST up reply actions

I should clarify that with a comparable

Imagine a younger Tru’s package – solid coverage skill, developing ball skills and a willingness on run support – but place it into Kelly Jenning’s body. Kelly Jenning’s body coming off of knee surgery. I love the thought of picking up WTIII but I can’t imagine a world in which he plays FS.

Well, I can, but it’s one where Brian Russell starts at QB.

by niko on Feb 3, 2010 2:22 PM PST up reply actions

No surprise here, but I really like Sherrick.

As a freshman, he nearly shut down Ted Ginn (which was harder to do in college). He isn’t exceedingly fast, but he does have good ball skills. I can’t seem to find individual video from a few of his other picks this year, but he had at least one more just left me speechless.

by abender20 on Feb 3, 2010 6:44 PM PST up reply actions

Any thoughts on

Corey Wootton? 6’7" 280 says to me 3-4 DE, but a poor senior year and an amazing junior year (10 sacks 17 TFL) says massive potential.

by LantermanC on Feb 4, 2010 8:47 AM PST up reply actions

Selvish Capers

Late 3rd round (if we somehow get one) to early fourth round pick offensive tackle. Pretty raw as a pass blocker, but is very athletic and fits well in the zone-blocking scheme. Perhaps Alex Gibbs can work his magic on him and turn him into a star.

by aerozeppelin on Feb 3, 2010 1:50 PM PST reply actions

A couple more that I like

Kyle McCarthy, SS from ND

Lindsey Witten, DE from Conn

I’m really hung up on D for some reason, even though I’d prefer more Offense this draft. Oh,shit, I know…

Joique Bell, RB from Wayne State. His Highlights.

Pretty big, looks decently fast, he can catch, and his name is “Joyk”.

by DJ C-Raig on Feb 3, 2010 8:07 PM PST reply actions

Joique Bell is this year's Rashad Jennings.

And by that I mean small school late round pick with tons of potential that I’d love to have.

by LantermanC on Feb 5, 2010 9:21 AM PST up reply actions

Really

He is ahead of everybody but Mathews and Spiller for me. And maybe Joe McKnight just because I like that he could be a receiver.

by DJ C-Raig on Feb 5, 2010 3:33 PM PST up reply actions

What do you see in him?

He looks slow compared to division two players and shows no moves or power. He just tries to beat players to the outside and avoid arm tackles.

by Nate Dogg on Feb 5, 2010 3:42 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, there is some truth to that.

I noticed that he got caught from behind a few times by CBs, and that made me wonder how he’d do in the NFL where everyone is fast. But he was clocked at Wayne (it’s bias) at 4.43, which isn’t blazing, but still decent. In my opinion, Bell seems to have pretty good burst, but his elusiveness is not top tier. He has good hands and has great pass protection skills, if a little unrefined. He is like Julius Jones, but better/younger/cheaper. He is one of those cats who will need to go hard at the Combine. But I think his skills work well with the ZBS (good one cut burst). He also won the Harlon Hill, which is the D2 Heisman. I was a D2 RB (albeit very shitty) so maybe I’m easily impressed.

by DJ C-Raig on Feb 5, 2010 4:13 PM PST up reply actions

Also, thought it's worth very little

his Ruskells are pretty high. Not Myron Rolle high, but he is a good dude.

by DJ C-Raig on Feb 5, 2010 4:15 PM PST up reply actions

Lol

his “Ruskells.” Love it.

Though they sink through the Sea, they shall rise again...Death shall have no dominion...

by Cheddar28 on Feb 8, 2010 1:32 PM PST up reply actions

Everyone in the NFL is not just fast but far better tacklers

He gets caught and tackled from behind a fair bit but there are a lot of times when he gets caught and shrugs off an arm tackle. NFL linebackers aren’t going to be falling around him or sliding off of him as he runs past. And for what it’s worth he looked bad in the Senior Bowl.

We’ll see though. If he tears up the combine I probably won’t be as down on him.

by Nate Dogg on Feb 5, 2010 4:23 PM PST up reply actions

Oh, no worries

I think it should totally be about discussing whether players are good or not, as long as it come from a place of genuine knowledge and curiosity, and not just “Baaah! I hatez that skool!”.

And I can see where your concerns come from w/ Bell. I thought the same things (D2 arm tackles, caught from behind, etc.). I’ve just taken a fancy to him, and I really like the way he runs. However, if he Javon Ringers his way back, I won’t be surprised.
