Super Bowl Party - Open Thread
I'm off to New Seasons and Belmont Station to grab supplies. This is an open thread to discuss the game itself, hosting a party, anything else, and what beer and food one needs to tribute the greatest day in sports.

For food you can never go wrong with barbeque potato chips.
But seriously, kill yourself with chicken wings and ribs.

Hall of fame announcements to be made in 20 minutes
Jerry Rice and Emmitt Smith are definitely in.

I'm so damn tired of "Who Dat?"
I want the Saints to win, but they are starting to make me hate them.
I fucking hate you Mariners

Here's my preliminary beer lineup
Brew Dog: Basha, Allagash: Tripel, Bear Republic: Hop Rod Rye, Anderson Valley: Oatmeal Stout, Flying Dog: Gonzo Imperial Porter, Victory: Hop Wallop.
How much is that going to cost you?

SUPER! BOWL!

Yesterday I enjoyed a Boont Amber
while sailing with a friend in the SF Bay out of Berkeley Marina. It worked pretty well.
Also, for fans of tripels and other Belgian-style beers, if you’re ever in Oakland, be sure to visit The Trappist Pub. I had their tripel last week. Every sip impelled me to grin (more) like an idiot (than usual).
Boont is a solid beer
should be able to find it at Trader Joe’s for those not in California
Shanghai Kelly's on Polk St. in San Francisco is the worst bar on the face of the earth (at least on Sunday mornings).
Looks like a good selection.
I’m sure I’m forgetting one, but we’re gonna have Allagash White, Pilsner Urquell, Old Brown Dog Ale, Captain Lawrence Smoked Porter and Brooklyn Local 2.
Peyton Manning will shred Malcolm Jenkins
Colts win.

I think we would've all been yelling "HOW THE HELL CAN YOU CALL PI THERE?!!"
I’m not nearly as bitter about the officiating as others, but that was a crap call.
What if it had existed during the NFC Championship Game? Euphoria?

Sounds like the Jaguars are going to gift the Bears Holt.
I wonder what Chicago will do about left tackle.
Tra Thomas?
Cutler would likely make it no further than half the season w/ Tra at LT and Martz calling plays. Could be great…or comical. ;)
Chargers aren't keeping LT
I wonder if they draft Matthews, if not trade up and get Spiller.
The Seattle Times linked to my website in June 2009. I wasn't aware of this until January 2010.
Jonathon Dwyer wouldn't shock me
National Football Post has him as top rated RB prospect, and he would complement Sproles perfectly.
WHOO HOO NFL HALL OF FAME ANNOUNCEMENTS COMING UP!

There can still be final cuts from this.

They have the least talented offense I can remember.
Tempting as it is I’m not sure they should draft Suh.
The Seattle Times linked to my website in June 2009. I wasn't aware of this until January 2010.
One down
I think I am only going to get to the NFC West today. Rams need talent like no other team, and though quarterback is the most important position, there’s not likely as much that will separate the quarterback they can get this year with the quarterback they can get next year. They will never get another chance at a Suh.
Want some help?
I’ve got a long day of nothing going on at work, I could take a division if you want.
First thing I am noticing about this, and it's super early
First quarter drive stats better indicate the comparative quality of good and bad teams. I think the kill the clock effect coupled with the prevent effect, makes teams look a lot closer in ability than they actually are.
Oh crap the guy just announced Rickey Jackson as "Randy Jackson".

Whether or not the Seahawks are in it, I want to see a SB held at Qwest.
Rain, snow, or shine.

It makes it more exclusive.
Therefore, hike the prices way the heck up.

Unfortunately, it seems like the NFL wants to keep it in a warm climate city, based on previous choices.
Or if they put it in a cold climate city, it needs to be in a dome or have a retractable roof. Arrowhead Stadium and the new stadium in New York were going to be hosts but the financing for the retractable roofs fell through on both.

If I were to get the chance to properly celebrate the Super Bowl, I'd do it in the style of the brilliant fatties at Rutgers.
The Fat Darrell. This is about the worst interview I’ve ever seen, but whatever. One of my college friends was from New Jersey and introduced us to the concept, so we tried it out. Goodness.
Sounders FC schedule was released so they play on the road during NFL season on the following dates:
September 18th
September 25th
October 9th
October 23rd

DKSB usually breaks that stuff down every year in detail.
Very interesting – I’d like to catch a game, not just TC this year.
I went to the first leg of the playoffs last season.
Boy that was great. Montero getting a bullshit yellow, Onstad not getting a red, the official refusing to play the goddamn advantage.
I love MLS, but good god this league needs better officials.
Not necessarily.
Sounders play on Saturdays, so the Seahawks could still play the following the Sunday. After all I seem to remember that a couple of Cougars games in Qwest were followed by a Seahawks game the next day. I might be wrong.

Sounders are playing on a soccer pitch with no football lines
Or end zones, and they drape the upper bowl at Qwest. Not that it’s impossible, but it would be a bit of a task to change it from a soccer field to a football field in less than 24 hours.
The Cougars were playing a football game. There’s a lot less work in changing the field around when you’re playing the same sport the day before the Seahawks game.
The Seattle Times linked to my website in June 2009. I wasn't aware of this until January 2010.
Quite true.
I did not consider that. I know that they’ve done it in two days. But you’re right, it would be extremely difficult to do that in less than 24 hours.

Open question - top BC microbrews
I generally stick with the following but I am looking for more ideas (a rant about poor selection of quality Canadian beers is long over due. Nothing against the country or its beer history but there really isn’t a selection. And, sorry, honey ale is not beer). At the bottom, I have listed a couple of random beer facts about Canada but before the list here is what I usually stand by (new suggestions are welcome):
Phillips Blue Buck
Phillips Chocolate Porter
Old Yale Brewing Sasquatch Stout
Howe Sound (generally anything, but specifically) Father John’s Winter Ale
Big Rock (stable selection across the board, nothing outstanding but nothing poor)
And here is the list of random facts:
1. Canada is the largest consumer of Bud Light Lime (the stuff sells out all the time, weirdest thing)
2. It’s considered common knowledge that all US macros are 3.5% alcohol (false, but I have yet to meet a Canadian who hasn’t stated how weak alcohol wise US beer is and then tout how a Molson Canadian is a real beer)
3. Pabst is the cheapest beer at the BC liquor store (I am not calling Dude Beer, beer)
Shanghai Kelly's on Polk St. in San Francisco is the worst bar on the face of the earth (at least on Sunday mornings).
I wish I could offer anything but I know nothing about Canadian beers
I’ve never even visited the country.
Put this on the front page, but since this is a discussion thread, Brian Burke on FO's AGL
Unfortunately, there’s also this write-up on Adjusted Games Lost. It seems like a clever, useful idea at first—tallying teams’ reported injuries weighted by how bad the injury is (probable, questionable, etc.). But if I taught an intro applied statistics course, I’d use this as the poster-child of how not to construct research. I’d say, “Ok class, let’s list all the errors, fallacies, and other problems with this on the board.” Data-mining for type I errors, small-sample fallacy, widely varying injury-reporting doctrine by teams, correlation-causation fallacy…Some of their comments have additional criticisms.
Could it be that some teams regularly report half their players as probable or questionable regardless of true injury status? And that some teams don’t disclose injuries that they should? Also, once it becomes apparent a team is not in the playoff hunt, many players will suddenly be held out or put on IR. So there is a “causation back-flow” where being a bad team creates injuries. Adjusted Games Lost is like a bad research pinata. It’s fine to do something like AGL if you address its shortcomings up front, but claiming they’ve discovered that some teams are tangibly better at keeping players healthy is an overreach.
I really wish FO would stop discrediting themselves.
I love the Superbowl
But I hate that shit they do at halftime, with all the people dancing on the field.
I played for the guy who writes music for the Cadets.
Though they sink through the Sea, they shall rise again...Death shall have no dominion...
In the meantime
wooo space shuttle launch streaming on NASA’s page.
Prepping for Party
Menu includes duck egg rolls, pulled pork egg rolls, Prosciutto wrapped prawns, sweet and sour meatballs, pigs in blankets (little smokies in crescent roll) and devils candy (candied bacon with dates). And of course hot, hot wings. Damn, my stomach is growling now.
Forbidden from hosting a party, and dislike most crowded sports bars...
So we’re watching the game at a Brazilian-owned soccer bar, who required convincing to throw a SB party. But the menu looks tasty (Moqueca, anyone?) and Hobgoblin’s on tap.

I'm just keeping it simple this year
Frying up some burgers later on, and washing them down with Alaskan IPA.
Is that the light at the end of the tunnel, or the headlights of an oncoming train?
