And Tapp's signed his tender.
I noted he tweeted what a busy day he had, and I wondered if that had anything to do with signing. That’s cool.
Grant, though. Surprising. And another need emerges before the draft, disconcerting.
Personally, I thought Grant was awful last year.
Previously, I was probably higher on him than most in this community, from some of the things I remember John saying about him. But last year I think he was one of the worst spots on the team, and strangely with very little criticism that crossed my path. I guess we were too busy bemoaning everything else and still basking in the Brian Russell Release Afterglow.
But weird timing. Unless it’s for a bonus or something.

Yay for signing Tapp
And I mean BIG YAY.
But releasing Grant now? They must have something in the cards, or that’s tipping our hand a little too much regarding this draft.
Yes for Tapp.
Now do the right thing and lock him up long term.
I'm gonna go calm submissive on your ass.
Yeah... BEFORE he goes off.
If somehow we come out of this draft with a good DT, our ends will really reap the benefits. I bet Tapp will put up 10+ sacks.
On the downside
he could be injured this year and the labor dispute hasn’t been resolved. Makes sense to wait. Mid-season perhaps.

Rotoworld:
“After posting 13 sacks and an impressive seven forced fumbles as mostly a nickel end between 2007-2008, Tapp’s production fell off in Jim Mora and Gus Bradley’s defense a year ago. Bradley was retained as coordinator and the team gave Tapp a mere original pick tender, so the Pete Carroll regime can’t be especially high on him. He probably won’t threaten for a starting job in 2010.”
Well, someone knows nothing about our team. Nah, Tapp won’t even threaten. Loser.
Sorry but Tapp is our best DE, fellas.

That qualifies as one of, if not the, least informed things I’ve read this off-season. That’s pretty bad.

Or Taylor Mays at 40.
Or Taylor Mays with the 3rd round pick we receive in some trade. Or Taylor Mays with our 7th round compensatory pick.
Dammit.
Deon Grant was always one of my favorite players. I’ve always thought he’s been exceptionally consistent and reliable.
Fuck.
Why would they re-sign him?
I doubt his release had much to do with money, and more to do with his play.

They probably won't
Just trying to make Killacamkilla feel a little better :)
The Issue that I have
Is that now we only have Babs as a safety who is average at best. Grant was at least consistent and I see no real reason to not keep him.
Anyone have any brilliant ideas why?
by killacamkilla2 on Mar 16, 2010 7:18 AM PDT up reply actions
He was pretty sucky in the box
but his coverage skills, especially deep cover, were valuable and underutilized. Why did Seattle do this? I think because they just committed themselves to drafting a safety. I can only hope Babs moves to strong safety.
Why
would they cut Grant? I believe he was due 4 million this year, and if Berry/Thomas/Mays develops slowly, we’re kinda screwed. Why not keep Grant and Babs, and then have the new rookie compete for a starting spot?
by killacamkilla2 on Mar 16, 2010 11:02 AM PDT up reply actions
Just read the comment bellow
And even though he was due a fair amount of money, we’ve made small-middling need at Safety a large one.
by killacamkilla2 on Mar 16, 2010 11:04 AM PDT up reply actions
I think his release was all about the money.
He originally had a $12M bonus and was due for around $17M for the remaining years of the contract. The uncapped year is a perfect opportunity to shed that albatross. Lots of other teams around the league have taken this chance to do the same thing, and then had some of those vets come back.
Yeah, he’s older and was miscast in Mora’s D. But IMO he’s still a serviceable starter and if used right is near the top of the current available FA crop out there. Bringing him back on a reasonable 2-3 year contract makes a lot of sense.
As stated elsewhere, my only real surprise with this move is that it happened pre-draft. And being this thin at starting S really tips our hand we plan to draft one early …. unless that’s exactly what Carrol/Schneider want the rest of the league to think (dun, dun, duhhh)

Only IF both Bradford and Clausen are gone.
Then, I could see it. Admittedly, as exciting as Berry is as a Safety, he is still a Safety. Dude had better be Reed, Polamalu, Lott, or Sean Taylor on the field. Even better: Kenny Easley v.2.0 .
Frankly, unless something changes at or before draft day, I’ll be very disappointed if we do not land one of the top 2 Quarterbacks in this draft. Perhaps there is a 2nd-round QB that becomes the real deal, but I just don’t see it.
I wouldn't rule out a re-sign with Grant
Cut him to shed the contract without worrying about future cap consequences. Let him sniff the market, and if no bites, he comes back on a more reasonable short term deal.

Don't worry, abender20, they are just toying with you
The actual plan is to trade both first rounders and a our 3rd in 2012 to Houston for rights to Brian Russell. The new regime feels his grit and leadership in the secondary were undervalued under Ruskell.
Agreed, it does seem like an odd move. Hopefully we can manage somehow to re-sign him at a lower cost.
Grant’s large salary aside, we did seem “adequate”, although probably below league average at safety. Now, we have yet one more gaping hole to fill. Maybe the front office wants everyone to think they are going to draft Berry or Mays, and it is a head fake. Surely they are well aware of the team’s needs, and have a plan that will dazzle us all. Or not.
We're trying to win now. But we don't want to have safeties worth a shit.
So we’re going to… play linebackers everywhere!

the defense...
…might be improved by drafting McCoy at 6 (if available) and Earl Thomas at 14.
Sure, the offense doesn’t get any help in the first two picks, but adding that kind of talent at DT and safety should do wonders for keeping the ball in the offenses hands a little longer than last year, with a few more opportunities a game.
It just seems like there is a lot more talent...
…on the defensive side of the field at the top of the draft.
Aside from Bradford, Okung, maybe Clausen, who else is worth taking in the top ten on offense?
All the other LTs have some questions about how they will fit in Carroll’s offense; Spiller/Best/Mathews not worth taking prior to 14; Bryant’s a head case and Tate probably not top 15 talent.
I was hoping a rookie safety (Berry, Thomas, whoever)...
…would be playing next to Grant, or at least on the same team.
Yeah, Grant being on the team doesn't stop them from drafting Berry
And if they are targeting Berry what happens if he goes before 6? Theres just no reason I can see to cut Grant.
If both McCoy AND Berry are still there at 6...
…having cut Grant makes the decision even more difficult, I would think.
Or maybe not. Perhaps they take McCoy without a second thought.
Or perhaps they have their heart’s set on Berry and take him even if McCoy is there.
The draft will not get here soon enough!
If McCoy is there at 6 (Bradford/Okung/Clausen/Suh)...
…off the board, then we are really talking about who to take at 14 (not counting trades).
In that case, Spiller/Best/Mathews is an option, and Charles Brown. Who else? One of the other LTs? Iupati?
I like the idea of drafting Spiller at 14, but not sure that would be the best move. A good RB or WR will be available at 40 (assuming the pick isn’t used for Marshall) or even a tackle or guard.
Assuming they draft McCoy 6
As much as I would love Spiller, but I think you would have to go OL at 14. I could see Bulaga or T. Williams @ 14. With the 40th pick they could still get a decent RB such as J. Best or J. McKnight, I think Mathews will be gone by then.
Our offense doens't need more opportunities to have three and outs and turn overs.
I love the idea of a bad ass defense but the Ravens and Bears could at least run the ball.

I'm going to guess they have some kind of plan in motion.
Because it seems awfully arbitrary to just let Grant go without someone else in mind.
Or, as someone else said, they hope to re-sign him after letting him poke around the market.
When it first hit me I thought you meant bringing back Marcus Pollard.
Thankfully the trusty brain worked well enough to understand context.
Yes I would’ve loved to have Pollard.

Of course, the 'Hammer' might be available. I'm not exactly on board with that idea, though.
Restricted free agent FS O.J. Atogwe is reportedly “on the Cowboys’ radar.”
It doesn’t say much for Ken Hamlin’s standing with the club. Atogwe offers superior playmaking ability while Hamlin remains a prime candidate for release with $6 million due this season.

Here are some ideas:
.
Safeties available (UFAs):
Will Allen, Mike Brown, Tyrone Carter, Ryan Clark, Nick Ferguson, Todd Johnson, Sean Jones, Kevin Kaesviharn, Ty Law, Marquand Manuel, Lawyer Milloy, Donnie Nickey, Jermaine Phillips, Pierson Prioleau, Mark Roman, Brian Russell, Bryan Scott, Darren Sharper, Matt Ware, Roy Williams.
Safeties potentially available (RFAs w/ tenders):
Danieal Manning, S, CHI, Original Round, 3rd Round
O.J. Atogwe, S, STL, First Refusal, None

by Generzal Zod on Mar 15, 2010 10:22 PM PDT up reply actions
I think Sharper would be a disaster on our defense.
He is horrible in the open field tackling (and when not picking off passes) and has lost a couple of steps. Though he may have great experience and anticipation, he was helped by the Saints offense and surrounding players/scheme. His age would show on our team, probably more than expected and certainly more than on a team with an elite offense.
How would any of these moves indicate that to you?
Why would this mean Taylor Mays at 6 just because he coached him before?

I can't see how this makes any sense, unless we sign a FA safety very soon.
Even if you plan on drafting Berry or (gulp) Mays, there’s such a thing as DEPTH. Seattle just went from a team with little safety talent to a team with no safety talent. Grant was a defensive captain and a veteran with decent skills, definitely the best on the roster for his position. It’s an uncapped year — cut him next year if you want, AFTER you’ve drafted a safety and seen that yes, he has the goods.
There better be a free agent safety on the way who is either a) way better than Grant, or b) as good as Grant but cheaper.
Hmmm...
Should we add Whitehurst, teams will be thinking we are drafting Berry (if he makes it to 6) and we’ll show them by drafting a QB after a team below us stands pat, doesn’t trade above us, and decides we will let said QB pass. YOU SHALL NOT PASS!
Signing Berry doesn't really excuse releasing Grant, though.
I can’t make sense of this.
It's called a youth movement
teams that rebuild correctly do this, teams that try to rebuild with a win now mentality are called the Chiefs, Redskins, and Bengals.

Adams is a no-nonsense safety who is physical and aggressive but only adequate in terms of athleticism and deep speed. He has a chance to excel on a team that allows his in-the-box skills to shine, but will struggle if forced into a coverage-heavy scheme
So I guess the real question is what number will Taylor Mays get?
